Antiferromagnetic $α$-MnTe: Molten-Salt-Assisted Chemical Vapor Deposition Growth and Magneto-Transport Properties

Antiferromagnetic (AF) materials are attracting increasing interest of research in magnetic physics and spintronics. Here, we report controllable synthesis of room-temperature AF $α$-MnTe nanocrystals (Néel temperature ~ 307 K) via molten-salt-assisted chemical vapor deposition method. The growth kinetics are investigated regarding the dependence of flake dimension and macroscopic shape on growth time and temperature. The high crystalline quality and atomic structure are confirmed by various crystallographic characterization means. Cryogenic magneto-transport measurements reveal anisotropic magnetoresistance (MR) response and a complicated dependence of MR on temperature, owing to the subtle competition among multiple scattering mechanisms of thermally excited magnetic disorders (magnon drag), magnetic transition and thermally populated lattice phonons. Overall positive MR behavior with twice transitions in magnitude is observed when out-of-plane external magnetic field ($B$) is applied, while a transition from negative to positive MR response is recorded when in-plane $B$ is applied. The rich magnetic transport properties render $α$-MnTe a promising material for exploiting functional components in magnetic devices.

Multi-wavelength Variation Phenomena of PKS 0735+178 on Diverse Timescale

BL Lac object PKS 0735+178 showed some complex multi-wavelength variation phenomena in the previous studies, especially for its color behavior. Bluer-when-brighter, redder-when-brighter and achromatic behavior were all found to be possible long-term trends of PKS 0735+178. In this work, we collected the long-term multi-wavelength data of PKS 0735+178, and also performed a multi-color optical monitoring on intraday timescale. The intraday variability was detected on one night. On the long timescale, a possible 22-day time lag was found between the $R$ and $γ$-ray bands. The results of the cross-correlation analysis exhibited strong correlations between various optical bands on both intraday and long timescale. However, only a mild correlation was found between the long-term $γ$-ray and $R$-band light curves, which could be interpreted by the different emission mechanisms of the $γ$-ray and optical emissions. PKS 0735+178 showed a significant harder-when-brighter in the $γ$-ray band, which is consistent with the observed optical bluer-when-brighter trend on both long-term and intraday timescales. We found that the HWB and BWB trends will be enhanced during the active states, especially for the historical low state. Such phenomenon indicates a special activity-dependent color behavior of PKS 0735+178, and it could be well interpreted by the jet emission model.

Forecast of observing time delay of the strongly lensed quasars with Muztagh-Ata 1.93m telescope

As a completely independent method, the measurement of time delay of strongly lensed quasars (TDSL) are crucial to resolve the Hubble tension. Extensive monitoring is required but so far limited to a small sample of strongly lensed quasars. Together with several partner institutes, Beijing Normal University is constructing a 1.93m reflector telescope at the Muztagh-Ata site in west China, which has the world class observing conditions. The telescope will be equipped with both a three-channel imager/photometer which covers $3500-11000$ Angstrom wavelength band, and a low-medium resolution ($λ/δλ=500/2000/7500$) spectrograph. In this paper, we investigate the capability of Muztagh-Ata 1.93m telescope in measuring time delays of strongly lensed quasars. We generate mock strongly lensed quasar systems and light curves with microlensing effects based on five known strongly lensed quasars, i.e., RX J1131-1231, HE 0435-1223, PG 1115+080, WFI 2033-4723 and SDSS 1206+4332. In particular, RX J1131-1231 is generated with lens modeling in this work. Due to lack of enough information, we simulate the other 4 systems with the public data without lens modeling. According to simulations, for RX J1131-like systems (wide variation in time delay between images) the TDSL measurement can be achieved with the precision about $Δt=0.5$ day with 4 seasons campaign length and 1 day cadence. This accuracy is comparable to the up-coming TDCOSMO project. And it would be better when the campaign length keeps longer and with high cadence. As a result, the capability of Muztagh-Ata 1.93m telescope allows it to join the network of TDSL observatories. It will enrich the database for strongly lensed quasar observations and make more precise measurements of time delays, especially considering the unique coordinate of the site.

Intra-day variability of BL Lacertae from 2016 to 2018

We monitored BL Lacertae in the B, V, R and I bands for 14 nights during the period of 2016-2018. The source showed significant intraday variability on 12 nights. We performed colour-magnitude analysis and found that the source exhibited bluer-when-brighter chromatism. This bluer-when-brighter behavior is at least partly caused by the larger variation amplitude at shorter wavelength. The variations at different wavelengths are well correlated and show no inter-band time lag.

Model-based cellular kinetic analysis of SARS-CoV-2 infection: different immune response modes and treatment strategies

Increasing number in global COVID-19 cases demands for mathematical model to analyze the interaction between the virus dynamics and the response of innate and adaptive immunity. Here, based on the assumption of a weak and delayed response of the innate and adaptive immunity in SARS-CoV-2 infection, we constructed a mathematical model to describe the dynamic processes of immune system. Integrating theoretical results with clinical COVID-19 patients' data, we classified the COVID-19 development processes into three typical modes of immune responses, correlated with the clinical classification of mild & moderate, severe and critical patients. We found that the immune efficacy (the ability of host to clear virus and kill infected cells) and the lymphocyte supply (the abundance and pool of naïve T and B cell) play important roles in the dynamic process and determine the clinical outcome, especially for the severe and critical patients. Furthermore, we put forward possible treatment strategies for the three typical modes of immune response. We hope our results can help to understand the dynamical mechanism of the immune response against SARS-CoV-2 infection, and to be useful for the treatment strategies and vaccine design.

Multi-color optical monitoring of ten blazars from 2005 to 2011

We carried out multi-color optical monitoring of a sample of ten blazars from 2005 to 2011. The sample contains 3 LBLs, 2 IBLs, 4 HBLs, and 1 FSRQ. Our monitoring focused on the long-term variability and the sample included nine BL Lac objects and one flat-spectrum radio quasar. A total number of 14799 data points were collected. This is one of the largest optical database for a sample of ten blazars. All objects showed significant variability except OT 546. Because of the low sampling on each single night, only BL Lacertae was observed to have intra-day variability on 2006 November 6. Most BL Lac objects showed a bluer-when-brighter chromatism, while the flat-spectrum radio quasar, 3C 454.3, displayed a redder-when-brighter trend. The BWB color behaviors of most BL Lacs can be at least partly interpreted by the fact of increasing variation amplitude with increasing frequency observed in these objects. The average spectral index of LBLs is around 1.5, as expected from the model dominated by Synchrotron Self-Compton (SSC) loss. The optical emission of HBL is probably contaminated by the thermal emission from the host galaxies. Correlation analysis did not reveal any time delay between variations at different wavelengths.

Intra-day optical multi-band quasi-simultaneous observation of BL Lacertae object S5 0716+714 from 2013 to 2016

We perform quasi-simultaneous optical multi-band monitoring of BL Lac object S5 0716+714 on seven nights from 2013 to 2016. Intra-day variability (IDV) is found on all seven nights. The source was faintest on JD 2456322 with 14.15 mags and brightest on JD 2457437 with 12.51 mags in the $R$ band. The maximum intra-day variation we observed is 0.15 mags in the $B$ band on JD 2456322. Both bluer-when-brighter and achromatic spectral behaviours were observed on the intra-day timescale. On the longer-term scale, the object exhibited a mild bluer-when-brighter behaviour between the $B$ and $R$ bands. We estimate the inter-band lags using two independent methods. The variation in the $B$ band was observed to lag that in the $I$ band by about 15 minutes on JD 2457315. We compare this lag with one reported previously and discussed the origin of these lags.

The First Release of the AST3-1 Point Source Catalogue from Dome A, Antarctica

The three Antarctic Survey Telescopes (AST3) aim to carry out time domain imaging survey at Dome A, Antarctica. The first of the three telescopes (AST3-1) was successfully deployed on January 2012. AST3-1 is a 500\,mm aperture modified Schmidt telescope with a 680\,mm diameter primary mirror. AST3-1 is equipped with a SDSS $i$ filter and a 10k $\times$ 10k frame transfer CCD camera, reduced to 5k $\times$ 10k by electronic shuttering, resulting in a 4.3 deg$^2$ field-of-view. To verify the capability of AST3-1 for a variety of science goals, extensive commissioning was carried out between March and May 2012. The commissioning included a survey covering 2000 deg$^2$ as well as the entire Large and Small Magellanic Clouds. Frequent repeated images were made of the center of the Large Magellanic Cloud, a selected exoplanet transit field, and fields including some Wolf-Rayet stars. Here we present the data reduction and photometric measurements of the point sources observed by AST3-1. We have achieved a survey depth of 19.3\,mag in 60 s exposures with 5\,mmag precision in the light curves of bright stars. The facility achieves sub-mmag photometric precision under stable survey conditions, approaching its photon noise limit. These results demonstrate that AST3-1 at Dome A is extraordinarily competitive in time-domain astronomy, including both quick searches for faint transients and the detection of tiny transit signals.

Upgraded Photometric System of The 85-cm Telescope at Xinglong Station

The 85-cm telescope at the Xinglong station is a well-operated prime focus system with high science outputs. The telescope has been upgraded since 2014 with new corrector, filters and camera, which are provided by Beijing Normal University (BNU). The filter set is Johnson-Cousins UBVRI system. We report the test results of the new system including the bias, dark current, linearity, gain and readout noise of the CCD camera . Then we derive accurate instrumental calibration coefficients in UBVRI bands with Landolt standard stars in the photometric nights. Finally, we give the limiting magnitudes with various exposure time and signal-to-noise ratio for observers as references.

Intraday Optical Variability of BL Lacertae

We monitored BL Lacertae simultaneously in the optical B, V, R and I bands for 13 nights during the period 2012-2016. The variations were well correlated in all bands and the source showed significant intraday variability (IDV). We also studied its optical flux and colour behaviour, and searched for inter-band time lags. A strong bluer-when-brighter chromatism was found on the intra-night time-scale. The spectral changes are not sensitive to the host galaxy contribution. Cross-correlation analysis revealed possible time delay of about 10 min between variations in the V and R bands. We interpreted the observed flares in terms of the model consisting of individual synchrotron pulses.

Ages and structural and dynamical parameters of two globular clusters in the M81 group

GC-1 and GC-2 are two globular clusters (GCs) in the remote halo of M81 and M82 in the M81 group discovered by Jang et al. using the {\it Hubble Space Telescope} ({\it HST}) images. These two GCs were observed as part of the Beijing--Arizona--Taiwan--Connecticut (BATC) Multicolor Sky Survey, using 14 intermediate-band filters covering a wavelength range of 4000--10000 Å. We accurately determine these two clusters' ages and masses by comparing their spectral energy distributions (from 2267 to 20000~Å, comprising photometric data in the near-ultraviolet of the {\it Galaxy Evolution Explorer}, 14 BATC intermediate-band, and Two Micron All Sky Survey near-infrared $JHK_{\rm s}$ filters) with theoretical stellar population-synthesis models, resulting in ages of $15.50\pm3.20$ for GC-1 and $15.10\pm2.70$ Gyr for GC-2. The masses of GC-1 and GC-2 obtained here are $1.77-2.04\times 10^6$ and $5.20-7.11\times 10^6 \rm~M_\odot$, respectively. In addition, the deep observations with the Advanced Camera for Surveys and Wide Field Camera 3 on the {\it HST} are used to provide the surface brightness profiles of GC-1 and GC-2. The structural and dynamical parameters are derived from fitting the profiles to three different models; in particular, the internal velocity dispersions of GC-1 and GC-2 are derived, which can be compared with ones obtained based on spectral observations in the future. For the first time, in this paper, the $r_h$ versus $M_V$ diagram shows that GC-2 is an ultra-compact dwarf in the M81 group.

Simultaneous optical monitoring of BL Lacertae object S5 0716+714 with high temporal resolution

We have monitored the BL Lacertae object S5 0716+714 simultaneously in the B, R and I bands on three nights in November 2014. The average time resolution is quite high (73s, 34s, 58s for the filters B, R and I), which can help us trace the profile of the variation and search for the short inter-band time delay. Intra-day variability was about 0.1 mag on the first two nights and more than 0.3 mag on the third. A bluer-when-brighter color behavior was found. An clear loop path can be seen on the color-magnitude diagram of the third night, revealing possible time delays between variations at high and low energies. It is the first time that the intra-day spectral hysteresis loop has been found so obviously in the optical band. We used the interpolated cross-correlation function method to further confirm the time delay and calculated the values of lag between light curves at different wavelengths on each night. On the third night, variations in the R and B bands is approximately 1.5 minutes lagging behind the I band. Such optical time delay is probably due to the interplay of different processes of electrons in the jet of the blazar.

Spectral Energy Distributions and Masses of 304 M31 Old Star Clusters

This paper presents CCD multicolor photometry for 304 old star clusters in the nearby spiral galaxy M31. Of which photometry of 55 star clusters is first obtained. The observations were carried out as a part of the Beijing--Arizona--Taiwan--Connecticut (BATC) Multicolor Sky Survey from 1995 February to 2008 March, using 15 intermediate-band filters covering 3000--10000 Å. Detailed comparisons show that our photometry is in agreement with previous measurements. Based on the ages and metallicities from Caldwell et al. and the photometric measurements here, we estimated the clusters' masses by comparing their multicolor photometry with stellar population synthesis models. The results show that the sample clusters have masses between $\sim 3\times10^4 M_\odot$ and $\sim 10^7 M_\odot$ with the peak of $\sim 4\times10^5 M_\odot$. The masses here are in good agreement with those in previous studies. Combined with the masses of young star clusters of M31 from Wang et al., we find that the peak of mass of old clusters is ten times that of young clusters.

Six-year Optical Monitoring of BL Lacertae Object 1ES 0806+52.4

We present the results of the first systematic long-term multi-color optical monitoring of the BL Lacertae object 1ES 0806+52.4. The monitoring was performed in multiple passbands with a 60/90 cm Schmidt telescope from December 2005 to February 2011. The overall brightness of this object decreased from 2005 December to 2008 December, and regained after that. A sharp outburst probably occurred around the end of our monitoring program. Overlapped on the long-term trend are some short-term small-amplitude oscillations. No intra-night variability was found in the object, which is in accord with the historical observations before 2005. By investigating the color behavior, we found strong bluer-when-brighter chromatism for the long-term variability of 1ES 0806+52.4. The total amplitudes at the c, i and o bands are 1.18, 1.12, and 1.02 mags, respectively. The amplitudes tend to increase toward shorter wavelength, which may be the major cause of bluer-when-brighter. Such bluer-when-brighter is also found in other blazars like S5 0716+714, OJ 287, etc. The hard X-ray data collected from the Swift/BAT archive was correlated with our optical data. No positive result was found, the reason of which may be that the hard X-ray flux is a combination of the synchrotron and inverse Compton emission but with different timescales and cadences under the leptonic Synchrotron-Self-Compton (SSC) model.

Variability and spectral variation of 3C 66A

3C 66A was monitored by the BATC(Beijing-Arizona-Taipei-Connecticut) telescope from 2005 to 2008,1994 observations were obtained on 89 nights. Detailed research and analysis was performed on these observations in this paper. A long term burst occurred in the whole light curve. No intra-day variability was claimed in our campaign by intra-night light curve analysis. Time lag of shorter wavelenth preceding longer wavelength was shown by correlation analysis. The results showed that the optical spectral shape turned flatter when the source brightened, and the spectral variability indicator was bigger on shorter time-scale as determined by the color indices variation analysis.

Seven-Year Multi-Color Optical Monitoring of BL Lacertae Object S5 0716+714

We have monitored the BL Lac object S5 0716+714 in five intermediate optical wavebands from 2004 September to 2011 April. Here we present the data that include 8661 measurements which represents one of the largest databases obtained for an object at optical domain. A simple analysis of the data indicates that the object was active in most time, and intraday variability was frequently observed. In total, the object varied by 2.614 magnitudes in the $i$ band. Strong bluer-when-brighter chromatism was observed on long, intermediate, and short timescales.

Metal Abundance and Kinematical Properties of M81 Globular Cluster System

In this paper, we presented metal abundance properties of 144 M81 globular clusters. These globulars consist of the largest globular cluster sample in M81 till now. Our main results are: the distribution of metallicities are bimodal, with metallicity peaks at [Fe/H]\sim-1.51 and -0.58, and the metal-poor globular clusters tend to be less spatially concentrated than the metal-rich ones; the metal-rich globular clusters in M81 do not demonstrate a centrally concentrated spatial distribution as the metal-rich ones in M31 do; like our Galaxy and M31, the globular clusters in M81 have a small radial metallicity gradient. These results are consistent with those obtained based on a small sample of M81 globular clusters. In addition, this paper showed that there is evidence that a strong rotation of the M81 globular cluster system around the minor axis exists, and that rotation is present in the metal-rich globular cluster subsample, while the metal-poor globular cluster subsample shows no evidence for rotation. The most significant difference between the rotation of the metal-rich and metal-poor globular clusters occurs at intermediate projected galactocentric radii. The results of this paper confirm the conclusion of Schroder et al. that M81's metal-rich globular clusters at intermediate projected radii were associated with a thick disk of M81.

Simultaneous B'V'R' Monitoring of BL Lacertae Object S5~0716+714 and Detection of Inter-Band Time Delay

We present the results of our optical monitoring of the BL Lac object S5 0716+714 on seven nights in 2006 December. The monitoring was carried out simultaneously at three optical wavelengths with a novel photometric system. The object did not show large-amplitude internight variations during this period. Intranight variations were observed on four nights and probably on one more. Strong bluer-when-brighter chromatism was detected on both intranight and internight timescales. The intranight variation amplitude decreases in the wavelength sequence of B', R', and V'. Cross correlation analyses revealed that the variability at the $B'$ and $V'$ bands lead that at the $R'$ band by about 30 minutes on one night.
