Revisitation of superconductivity in K$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$ based on the six-band model

We investigate the pairing symmetry of the newly synthesized quasi-one-dimension K$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$ superconductor based on the six-band model. We adopt standard random-phase-approximation to study the Hubbard-Hund model of the system. Our results confirm the conclusions obtained from our previous three-band model: the triplet $p_z$ and $f_{y^3-3x^2y}$ wave pairings serve as the leading pairing symmetries in the weak and strong Hund's rule coupling regimes, respectively. For physically realistic parameters, the triplet $p_z$-wave pairing driven by ferromagnetic fluctuations is the leading pairing symmetry of the system. The consistency between the results of these two models suggests that the obtained $p_z$-wave pairing symmetry is physical and model-independent.

Observation of a van Hove singularity and implication for strong coupling induced Cooper pairing in KFe2As2

Scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) have been investigated on single crystal samples of KFe2As2. A van Hove singularity (vHs) has been directly observed just a few meV below the Fermi level E_F of superconducting KFe2As2, which locates in the middle of the principle axes of the first Brillouin zone. The majority of the density-of-states at E_F, mainly contributed by the proximity effect of the saddle point to E_F, is non-gapped in the superconducting state. Our observation of nodal behavior of the momentum area close to the vHs points, while providing consistent explanations to many exotic behaviours previously observed in this material, suggests Cooper pairing induced by a strong coupling mechanism.

Electronic structure properties in the nematic phases of FeSe

We investigate the electronic structures of FeSe in the presence of different possible orders. We find that only ferro-orbital order (FO) and collinear antiferro-magnetism (C-AFM) can simultaneously induce splittings at $Γ$ and M. Bicollinear antiferro-magnetism (B-AFM) and spin-orbit coupling (SOC) have very similar band structure on $Γ$-M near the Fermi level. The temperature insensitive splitting at $Γ$ and the temperature dependent splitting at M observed in recent experiments can be explained by the d-wave bond nematic (dBN) order together with SOC. The recent observed Dirac cones and their temperature ($T$) dependence in FeSe thin films can also be well explained by the dBN order with band renormalization. Their thickness- and cobalt-doping- dependent behaviors are the consequences of electron doping and reduction of Se height. All these suggest that the nematic order in FeSe system is the dBN order.

Triplet $p_z$-wave pairing in quasi one dimensional A$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$ superconductors

We construct minimum effective models to investigate the pairing symmetry in the newly discovered quasi-one-dimensional superconductor K$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$. We show that a minimum three-band model based on the $d_{z^2}$, $d_{xy}$ and $d_{x^2-y^2}$ orbitals of one Cr sublattice can capture the band structures near Fermi surfaces. In both weak and strong coupling limits, the standard random phase approximation (RPA) and mean-field solutions consistently yield the triplet $p_z$-wave pairing as the leading pairing symmetry for physically realistic parameters. The triplet pairing is driven by the ferromagnetic fluctuations within the sublattice. The gap function of the pairing state possesses line gap nodes on the $k_z=0$ plane on the Fermi surfaces.

Experimental consequences of $p_z$-wave spin triplet superconductivity in A$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$

The experimental observable properties of the triplet $p_z$-wave pairing state, proposed by Wu {\em et al.} [arXiv:1503.06707] in quasi-one dimensional A$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$ materials, are theoretically investigated. This pairing state is characterized by the line nodes on the $k_z=0$ plane on the Fermi surfaces. Based on the three-band tight binding model, we obtain the specific heat, superfluid density, Knight shift and spin relaxation rate and find that all these properties at low temperature ($T\ll T_c$) show powerlaw behaviors and are consistent available experiments. Particularly, the superfluid density determined by the $p_z$-wave pairing state in this quasi-one dimensional system is anisotropic: the in-plane superfluid density varies as $Δρ_{\parallel}\sim T$ but the out-plane one varies as $Δρ_{\perp}\sim T^3$ at low temperature. The anisotropic upper critical field reported in experiment is consistent with the $S_z=0$ (i.e., $(\uparrow\downarrow+\downarrow\uparrow)$) $p_z$-wave pairing state. We also suggest the phase-sensitive dc-SQUID measurements to pin down the triplet $p_z$-wave pairing state.

Quantum Fluctuation Driven First-order Phase Transitions in Optical Lattices

We study quantum fluctuation driven first-order phase transitions of a two-species bosonic system in a three-dimensional optical lattice. Using effective potential method we find that the superfluid-Mott insulator phase transition of one type of bosons can be changed from second-order to first-order by the quantum fluctuations of the other type of bosons. The study of the scaling behaviors near the quantum critical point shows that the first-order phase transition has a different universality from the second-order one. We also discuss the observation of this exotic phenomenon in the realistic cold-atom experiments.

Predicting Unconventional High Temperature Superconductors in Trigonal Bipyramidal Coordinations

Cuprates and iron-based superconductors are two classes of unconventional high Tc superconductors based on 3d transition elements. Recently, two principles, correspondence principle and magnetic selective pairing rule, have been emerged to unify their high Tc superconducting mechanisms. These principles strongly regulate electronic structures that can host high Tc superconductivity. Guided by these principles, here we propose high Tc superconducting candidates that are formed by cation-anion trigonal bipyramidal complexes with a d^7 filling configuration on the cation ions. Their superconducting states are expected to be dominated by the d+id pairing symmetry.

Robustness of s-wave pairing symmetry in iron-based superconductors and its implications to fundamentals on magnetically-driven high temperature superconductivity

Under the assumption that the superconducting state belongs to a single irreducible representation of lattice symmetry, we argue that the pairing symmetry in all measured iron-based superconductors is universally consistent with the A_{1g} s-wave. The robust s-wave pairing throughout the different families of iron-based superconductors at different doping regions signals two fundamental principles behind high T_c superconducting mechanisms: (1) the correspondence principle: the short range magnetic exchange interactions and the Fermi surfaces act collaboratively to achieve high T_c superconductivity and determine pairing symmetries; (2) the magnetic selection pairing rule: the superconductivity is only induced by the magnetic exchange couplings from the superexchange mechanism through cation-anion-cation chemical bondings. These principles explain why the unconventional high T_c superconductivity appears to be such a rare but robust phenomena with its strict requirement on electronic environment. The robust s-wave pairing also reveals that the current standard effective models with only onsite interactions are not sufficient and a minimum microscopic model must include strong nearest neighbor repulsive interactions resulted from the d-d direct bondings to serves as a s-wave symmetry stabilizer. Finally, the sign distribution of the superconducting order parameters in the reciprocal space is simply a consequence of the form factors given by the leading short-range pairings. The sign change of superconducting order parameters on Fermi surfaces is not a necessary requirement in repulsive-interaction-driven high T_c mechanism. The results will guide us to search for new electronic structure that supports high T_c superconductivity.

Formation of As-As Bond and Its Effect on Absence of Superconductivity in Collapsed Tetragonal Phase of Ca0.86Pr0.14Fe2As2 : An Optical Spectroscopy Study

The temperature dependence of in plane optical conductivity has been investigated for Ca0.86Pr0.14Fe2As2 which shows a structural transition from tetragonal (T) to collapsed tetragonal(cT) phase at TcT=73 K. Upon entering the cT phase, drastic change characterized by the formation of a midinfrared peak near 3200 cm-1(0.4 eV) in the optical conductivity is observed.Analysis of the spectral weight reveals reduced electron correlation after the cT phase transition.Based on the calculated band structure and simulated optical conductivity, we attribute the new feature around 0.4 eV to the formation of interlayer As-As bond. The As-As bond strongly affects the Fe-As hybridizations, and in turn, drastically changes the Ca0.86Pr0.14Fe2As2 into a nonmagnetic Fermi liquid system without bulk superconductivity in the cT phase.

Observation of Raman active phonon with Fano lineshape in quasi-one-dimensional superconductor K$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$

We performed a polarized Raman scattering study of quasi-one-dimensional superconductor K$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$. We detect two A$_1^\prime$ phonons and three E$^\prime$ phonons. One of the A$_1^\prime$ modes exhibits a nearly temperature-independent Fano lineshape. Based on our first-principles calculations, we ascribe this mode to the in-phase vibrations of Cr atoms within one layer. This observation strongly suggests that the magnetic fluctuations in K$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$ are coupled to the electronic structure \emph{via} the lattice.

Structural and Magnetic Phase Diagram of CrAs and its Relationship with Pressure-induced Superconductivity

Most unconventional superconductors, including cuprates and iron-based superconductors, are derived from chemical doping or application of pressure on their collinearly magnetic-ordered parent compounds[1-5]. The recently discovered pressure-induced superconductor CrAs, as a rare example of a non-collinear helimagnetic superconductor, has therefore generated great interest in understanding microscopic magnetic properties and their interplay with superconductivity [6-8]. Unlike cuprates and iron based superconductors where the magnetic moment direction barely changes upon doping, here we show that CrAs exhibits a spin reorientation from the ab plane to the ac plane, along with an abrupt drop of the magnetic propagation vector at a critical pressure (Pc~0.6 GPa). This magnetic phase transition coincides with the emergence of bulk superconductivity, indicating a direct connection between magnetism and superconductivity. With further increasing pressure, the magnetic order completely disappears near the optimal Tc regime (P~0.94 GPa). Moreover, the Cr magnetic moments between nearest neighbors tend to be aligned antiparallel with increasing pressure toward the optimal superconductivity regime. Our findings suggest that the non-collinear helimagnetic order is strongly coupled to structural and electronic degrees of freedom, and that antiferromagnetic correlations associated with the low magnetic vector phase are crucial for superconductivity.

Magnetism in Quasi-One-Dimensional A$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$ (A=K,Rb) superconductors

We predict that the recently discovered quasi-one dimensional superconductors, A$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$(A=K,Rb), possess strong frustrated magnetic fluctuations and are nearby a novel in-out co-planar magnetic ground state. The frustrated magnetism is very sensitive to c-axis lattice constant and can thus be suppressed by increasing pressure. Our results qualitatively explain strong non-Fermi liquid behaviors observed in the normal state of the superconductors as the intertwining between the magnetism and superconductivity can create a large quantum critical region in quasi-one dimensional systems and also suggest that the materials share similar phase diagrams and superconducting mechanism with other unconventional superconductors, such as cuprates and iron-based superconductors.

Probing superconductivity and pairing symmetry by coherent phonons in multiorbital superconductors

We show that the phase information contained in coherent phonon oscillations generated by a laser pulse in a multi- orbital superconductor can be used as an experimental tool to probe super- conductivity and pairing symmetries. The phase difference between the normal and superconducting states is proportional to the superconducting order parameter just below the superconducting transition temperature, Tc. It also exhibits different behaviors for superconducting states with different pairing symmetries. In particular, if there is an orbital-dependent internal sign change state, the phase difference can have a discontinuous jump below Tc.

CaFeAs$_2$: a Staggered Intercalation of Quantum Spin Hall and High Temperature Superconductivity

We predict that CaFeAs$_2$, a newly discovered iron-based high temperature (T$_c$) superconductor, is a staggered intercalation compound that integrates topological quantum spin hall (QSH) and superconductivity (SC). CaFeAs$_2$ has a structure with staggered CaAs and FeAs layers. While the FeAs layers are known to be responsible for high T$_c$ superconductivity, we show that with spin orbital coupling each CaAs layer is a $Z_{2}$ topologically nontrivial two-dimensional QSH insulator and the bulk is a 3-dimensional weak topological insulator. In the superconducting state, the edge states in the CaAs layer are natural 1D topological superconductors. The staggered intercalation of QSH and SC provides us an unique opportunity to realize and explore novel physics, such as Majorana modes and Majorana Fermions chains.

Topological Characters in Fe(Te$_{1-x}$Se$_x$) thin films

We investigate topological properties in the Fe(Te,Se) thin films. We find that the single layer FeTe$_{1-x}$Se$_x$ has nontrivial $Z_2$ topological invariance which originates from the parity exchange at $Γ$ point of Brillouin zone. The nontrivial topology is mainly controlled by the Te(Se) height. Adjusting the height, which can be realized as function of $x$ in FeTe$_{1-x}$Se$_x$, can drive a topological phase transition. In a bulk material, the two dimensional $Z_2$ topology invariance is extended to a strong three-dimensional one. In a thin film, we predict that the topological invariance oscillates with the number of layers. The results can also be applied to iron-pnictides. Our research establishes FeTe$_{1-x}$Se$_x$ as a unique system to integrate high T$_c$ superconductivity and topological properties in a single electronic structure.

$g$-wave Pairing in BiS$_2$ Superconductors

Recent angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy(ARPES) experiments have suggested that BiS$_2$ based superconductors are at very low electron doping. Using random phase approximation(RPA) and functional renormalization group(FRG) methods, we find that $g$-wave pairing symmetry belonging to A$_{2g}$ irreducible representation is dominant at electron doping $x<0.25$. The pairing symmetry is determined by inter-pocket nesting and orbital characters on the Fermi surfaces and is robust in a two-orbital model including both Hund's coupling $J$, and Hubbard-like Coulomb interactions $U$ and $U'$ with relatively small $J$ ($J\leq0.2U$). With the increasing electron doping, the g-wave state competes with both the s-wave $A_{1g}$ and d-wave $B_{2g}$ states and no pairing symmetry emerges dominantly.

Magnetisms in $p$-type monolayer gallium chalcogenides (GaSe, GaS)

Magnetisms in $p$-type monolayer GaX (X=S,Se) is investigated by performing density-functional calculations. Due to the large density of states near the valence band edge, these monolayer semiconductors are ferromagnetic within a small range of hole doping. The intrinsic Ga vacancies can promote local magnetic moment while Se vacancies cannot. Magnetic coupling between vacancy-induced local moments is ferromagnetic and surprisingly long-range. The results indicate that magnetization can be induced by hole doping and can be tuned by controlled defect generation.

Superconducting Gaps via Raman Scattering in Iron Superconductors

We investigate non-resonant Raman response for iron-based superconductors using the framework of an effective S4 model that was recently proposed to capture the essential electronic and magnetic properties of Iron based superconductors. We compute the momentum matrix elements and the resulting Raman vertices exactly for different polarization geometries and amazingly find that a simple coskxcosky superconducting gap function is in good agreement with experimental data measured in both iron-pnictides and iron-chalcogenides. The Raman peaks are also matched quantitatively with the measured superconducting gaps by other experimental techniques. The result strengthens the validity of the S4 model and the dominance of the s-wave pairing for iron-based superconductors.
