Universal superconductivity phase diagram for pressurized tetradymite topological insulators

We show that two different superconducting phases exist at high pressures in the optimized tetradymite topological insulators Bi2Te2Se (BTS) and Bi1.1Sb0.9Te2S (BSTS). The superconducting phases emerge at structural phase transitions, the first at 8.4 GPa for BTS and 12.4 GPa for BSTS, and the second at 13.6 GPa for BTS and 20.4 GPa, for BSTS. Electronic structure calculations show that these phases do not have topological character. Comparison of our results with prior work on Bi2Se3, Bi2Te3 and (Bi,Sb)2(Se,Te)3 allows us to uncover a universal phase diagram for pressure-induced superconductivity in tetradymites, providing a basis for understanding the relationships between topological behavior, crystal structure, and superconductivity for these materials.

Intertwined Spin and Orbital Density Waves in MnP Uncovered by Resonant Soft X-ray Scattering

Unconventional superconductors are often characterized by numerous competing and even intertwined orders in their phase diagrams. In particular, the electronic nematic phases, which spontaneously break rotational symmetry and often simultaneously involve spin, charge and/or orbital orders, appear conspicuously in both the cuprate and iron-based superconductors. The fluctuations associated with these phases may provide the exotic pairing glue that underlies their high-temperature superconductivity. Helimagnet MnP, the first Mn-based superconductor under pressure, lacks high rotational symmetry. However our resonant soft X-ray scattering (RSXS) experiment discovers novel helical orbital density wave (ODW) orders in this three-dimensional, low-symmetry system, and reveals intertwined ordering phenomena in unprecedented detail. In particular, a ODW forms with half the period of the spin order and fully develops slightly above the spin ordering temperature, their domains develop simultaneously, yet the spin order domains are larger than those of the ODW, and they cooperatively produce another ODW with 1/3 the period of the spin order. These observations provide a comprehensive picture of the intricate interplay between spin and orbital orders in correlated materials, and they suggest that nematic-like physics ubiquitously exists beyond two-dimensional and high-symmetry systems, and the superconducting mechanism of MnP is likely analogous to those of cuprate and iron-based superconductors.

Learning and Inference on Generative Adversarial Quantum Circuits

Quantum mechanics is inherently probabilistic in light of Born's rule. Using quantum circuits as probabilistic generative models for classical data exploits their superior expressibility and efficient direct sampling ability. However, training of quantum circuits can be more challenging compared to classical neural networks due to lack of efficient differentiable learning algorithm. We devise an adversarial quantum-classical hybrid training scheme via coupling a quantum circuit generator and a classical neural network discriminator together. After training, the quantum circuit generative model can infer missing data with quadratic speed up via amplitude amplification. We numerically simulate the learning and inference of generative adversarial quantum circuit using the prototypical Bars-and-Stripes dataset. Generative adversarial quantum circuits is a fresh approach to machine learning which may enjoy the practically useful quantum advantage on near-term quantum devices.

i-Josephson Junction as Topological Superconductor

We show that the time reversal symmetry inevitably breaks in a superconducting Josephson junction formed by two superconductors with different pairing symmetries dubbed as i-Josephson junction. While the leading conventional Josephson coupling vanishes in such an i-Josephson junction, the second order coupling from tunneling always generates chiral superconductivity orders with broken time reversal symmetry. Josephson frequency in the i-junction is doubled, namely $ω= 4eV /h$. The result provides a way to engineer topological superconductivity such as the d + id' -wave superconducting state characterized by a nonzero Chern number.

Independence of topological surface state and bulk conductances in three-dimensional topological insulators

The archetypical 3D topological insulators Bi2Se3, Bi2Te3 and Sb2Te3 commonly exhibit high bulk conductivities, hindering the characterization of the surface state charge transport. The optimally doped topological insulators Bi2Te2Se and Bi2-xSbxTe2S, however, allow for such characterizations to be made. Here we report the first experimental comparison of the topological surface states and bulk conductances of Bi2Te2Se and Bi1.1Sb0.9Te2S, based on temperature-dependent high-pressure measurements. We find that the surface state conductance at low temperatures remains constant in the face of orders of magnitude increase in the bulk state conductance, revealing in a straightforward way that the topological surface states and bulk states are decoupled at low temperatures, consistent with theoretical models, and confirming topological insulators to be an excellent venue for studying charge transport in 2D Dirac electron systems.

Predicting Diamond-like Co-based Chalcogenides as Unconventional High Temperature Superconductors

We predict Co-based chalcogenides with a diamond-like structure can host unconventional high temperature superconductivity (high-$T_c$). The essential electronic physics in these materials stems from the Co layers with each layer being formed by vertex-shared CoA$_4$ (A=S,Se,Te) tetrahedra complexes, a material genome proposed recently by us to host potential unconventional high-$T_c$ close to a $d^7$ filling configuration in 3d transition metal compounds. We calculate the magnetic ground states of different transition metal compounds with this structure. It is found that (Mn,Fe,Co)-based compounds all have a G-type antiferromagnetic(AFM) insulating ground state while Ni-based compounds are paramagnetic metal. The AFM interaction is the largest in the Co-based compounds as the three $t_{2g}$ orbitals all strongly participate in AFM superexchange interactions. The abrupt quenching of the magnetism from the Co to Ni-based compounds is very similar to those from Fe to Co-based pnictides in which a C-type AFM state appears in the Fe-based ones but vanishes in the Co-based ones. This behavior can be considered as an electronic signature of the high-$T_c$ gene. Upon doping, as we predicted before, this family of Co-based compounds favor a strong d-wave pairing superconducting state.

Odd and even modes of neutron spin resonance in the bilayer iron-based superconductor CaKFe$_4$As$_4$

We report an inelastic neutron scattering study on the spin resonance in the bilayer iron-based superconductor CaKFe$_4$As$_4$. In contrast to its quasi-two-dimensional electron structure, three strongly $L$-dependent modes of spin resonance are found below $T_c=35$ K. The mode energies are below and linearly scale with the total superconducting gaps summed on the nesting hole and electron pockets, essentially in agreement with the results in cuprate and heavy fermion superconductors. This observation supports the sign-reversed Cooper pairing mechanism under multiple pairing channels and resolves the long-standing puzzles concerning the broadening and dispersive spin resonance peak in iron pnictides. More importantly, the triple resonant modes can be classified into odd and even symmetries with respect to the distance of Fe-Fe planes within the Fe-As bilayer unit. Thus, our results closely resemble those in the bilayer cuprates with nondegenerate spin excitations, suggesting that these two high-$T_c$ superconducting families share a common nature.

Giant Enhancement of the Thermo-Particle Transport Figure of Merit and Breakdown of the Wiedemann-Franz Law in Unitary Fermi Gases

We theoretically investigate the thermo-particle transport properties of an unitary Fermi gas be- tween two reservoirs connected by a quantum point contact. We find several distinguished properties that are qualitatively different from those of weak or non-interacting gas systems. The particle trans- port figure of merit is drastically enhanced in the unitary regime and it increases as the transmission coefficient increases, exactly opposite to the behavior in the weak or non-interacting gas systems. The Lorentz number violates the Wiedemann-Franz law, demonstrating the breakdown of Fermi liquid. These transport properties are the hallmarks of the unitary Fermi gas and are attributed to the existence of preformed Cooper pairs.

Topological Critical Materials of Ternary Compounds

We review topological properties of two series of ternary compounds AMgBi (A=K, RB, Cs) and ABC with a hexagonal ZrBeSi type structure. The first series of materials AMgBi are predicted to be topological critical Dirac semimetals. The second series of ternary compounds, such as KZnP, BaAgAs, NaAuTe and KHgSb, can be used to realize various topological insulating states and semimetal states. The states are highly tunable as the realization of these topological states depends on the competition between several energy scales, including the energy of atomic orbitals, the energy of crystal splitting, the energy difference between bonding and antibonding states, and the strength of spin-orbit coupling. The exotic surface states in these series of compounds are predicted and are closely related to their unique crystal structures.

Direct observation of multiple topological phases in the iron-based superconductor Li(Fe,Co)As

Topological insulators/semimetals and unconventional iron-based superconductors have attracted major attentions in condensed matter physics in the past 10 years. However, there is little overlap between these two fields, although the combination of topological states and superconducting states will produce more exotic topologically superconducting states and Majorana bound states (MBS), a promising candidate for realizing topological quantum computations. With the progress in laser-based spin-resolved and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) with very high energy- and momentum-resolution, we directly resolved the topological insulator (TI) phase and topological Dirac semimetal (TDS) phase near Fermi level ($E_F$) in the iron-based superconductor Li(Fe,Co)As. The TI and TDS phases can be separately tuned to $E_F$ by Co doping, allowing a detailed study of different superconducting topological states in the same material. Together with the topological states in Fe(Te,Se), our study shows the ubiquitous coexistence of superconductivity and multiple topological phases in iron-based superconductors, and opens a new age for the study of high-Tc iron-based superconductors and topological superconductivity.

Orbital Origin of Extremely Anisotropic Superconducting Gap in Nematic Phase of FeSe Superconductor

The iron-based superconductors are characterized by multiple-orbital physics where all the five Fe 3$d$ orbitals get involved. The multiple-orbital nature gives rise to various novel phenomena like orbital-selective Mott transition, nematicity and orbital fluctuation that provide a new route for realizing superconductivity. The complexity of multiple-orbital also asks to disentangle the relationship between orbital, spin and nematicity, and to identify dominant orbital ingredients that dictate superconductivity. The bulk FeSe superconductor provides an ideal platform to address these issues because of its simple crystal structure and unique coexistence of superconductivity and nematicity. However, the orbital nature of the low energy electronic excitations and its relation to the superconducting gap remain controversial. Here we report direct observation of highly anisotropic Fermi surface and extremely anisotropic superconducting gap in the nematic state of FeSe superconductor by high resolution laser-based angle-resolved photoemission measurements. We find that the low energy excitations of the entire hole pocket at the Brillouin zone center are dominated by the single $d_{xz}$ orbital. The superconducting gap exhibits an anti-correlation relation with the $d_{xz}$ spectral weight near the Fermi level, i.e., the gap size minimum (maximum) corresponds to the maximum (minimum) of the $d_{xz}$ spectral weight along the Fermi surface. These observations provide new insights in understanding the orbital origin of the extremely anisotropic superconducting gap in FeSe superconductor and the relation between nematicity and superconductivity in the iron-based superconductors.

$β$-CuI: a Dirac semimetal without surface Fermi arcs

Anomalous surface states with Fermi arcs are commonly considered to be a fingerprint of Dirac semimetals (DSMs). In contrast to Weyl semimetals, however, Fermi arcs of DSMs are not topologically protected. Using first-principles calculations, we predict that $β$-CuI is a peculiar DSM whose surface states form closed Fermi pockets instead of Fermi arcs. In such a fermiological Dirac semimetal, the deformation mechanism from Fermi arcs to Fermi pockets stems from a large cubic term preserving all crystal symmetries, and the small energy difference between the surface and bulk Dirac points. The cubic term in $β$-CuI, usually negligible in prototypical DSMs, becomes relevant because of the particular crystal structure. As such, we establish a concrete material example manifesting the lack of topological protection for surface Fermi arcs in DSMs

$d+id$ chiral superconductivity in a triangular lattice from trigonal bipyramidal complexes

We model the newly predicted high-$T_c$ superconducting candidates constructed by corner-shared trigonal bipyramidal complexes with an effective three-orbital tight-banding Hamiltonian and investigate the pairing symmetry of their superconducting states driven by electron-electron interactions. Our combined weak and strong coupling based calculations consistently identify the chiral $d+id$ superconductivity as the leading pairing symmetry in a wide doping range with realistic interaction parameters. This pairing state has nontrivial topological Chern-number and can host gapless chiral edge modes, and the vortex cores under magnetic field can carry Majorana zero modes.

A Possible Family of Ni-based High Temperature Superconductors

We suggest that a family of Ni-based compounds, which contain [Ni$_2$M$_2$O]$^{2-}$(M=chalcogen) layers with an antiperovskite structure constructed by mixed-anion Ni complexes, NiM$_4$O$_2$, can be potential high temperature superconductors upon doping or applying pressure. The layer structures have been formed in many other transitional metal compounds such as La$_2$B$_2$Se$_2$O$_3$(B=Mn, Fe,Co). For the Ni-based compounds, we predict that the parental compounds host collinear antiferromagnetic states similar to those in the iron-based high temperature superconductors. The electronic physics near Fermi energy is controlled by two e$_{g}$ d-orbitals with completely independent in-plane kinematics. We predict that the superconductivity in this family is characterized by strong competition between extended s-wave and d-wave pairing symmetries.

Dirac and nodal line magnons in three-dimensional antiferromagnets

We study the topological properties of magnon excitations in three-dimensional antiferromagnets, where the ground state configuration is invariant under time-reversal followed by space-inversion ($PT$-symmetry). We prove that Dirac points and nodal lines, the former being the limiting case of the latter, are the generic forms of symmetry-protected band crossings between magnon branches. As a concrete example, we study a Heisenberg spin model for a "spin-web" compound, Cu$_3$TeO$_6$, and show the presence of the magnon Dirac points assuming a collinear magnetic structure. Upon turning on symmetry-allowed Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interactions, which introduce a small non-collinearity in the ground state configuration, we find that the Dirac points expand into nodal lines with nontrivial $Z_2$-topological charge, a new type of nodal lines unpredicted in any materials so far.

Magnetism and superconductivity in the layered hexagonal transition metal pnictides

We investigate the electronic and magnetic structures of the 122 (AM$_2$B$_2$) hexagonal transition-metal pnictides with A=(Sr, Ca), M=(Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni) and B=(As, P, Sb). It is found that the family of materials share critical similarities with those of tetragonal structures that include the famous iron-based high temperature superconductors. In both families, the next nearest neighbor(NNN) effective antiferromagnetic(AFM) exchange couplings reach the maximum value in the iron-based materials. While the NNN couplings in the latter are known to be responsible for the C-type AFM state and to result in the extended s-wave superconducting state upon doping, they cause the former to be extremely frustrated magnetic systems and can lead to an time reversal symmetry broken $d+id$ superconducting state upon doping. The iron-based compounds with the hexagonal structure, thus if synthesized, can help us to determine the origin of high temperature superconductivity.

Longitudinal modes of spin fluctuations in iron-based superconductors

Iron-based superconductors can exhibit different magnetic ground states and are in a critical magnetic region where frustrated magnetic interactions strongly compete with each other. Here we investigate the longitudinal modes of spin fluctuations in an unified effective magnetic model for iron-based superconductors. We focus on the collinear antiferromagnetic phase (CAF) and calculate the behavior of the longitudinal modes when different phase boundaries are approached. The results can help to determine the nature of the magnetic fluctuations in iron-based superconductors.

Weyl and nodal ring magnons in three-dimensional honeycomb lattices

We study the topological properties of magnon excitations in a wide class of three dimensional (3D) honeycomb lattices with ferromagnetic ground states. It is found that they host nodal ring magnon excitations. These rings locate on the same plane in the momentum space. The rings can be gapped by Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interactions to form two Weyl points with opposite charges. We explicitly discuss these physics in the simplest 3D honeycomb lattice, the hyperhoneycomb lattice and show drumhead and arc surface states in the nodal ring and Weyl phases, respectively, due to the bulk-boundary correspondence.
