CHANG-ES: XVIII---The CHANG-ES Survey and Selected Results

The CHANG-ES (Continuum Halos in Nearby Galaxies) survey of 35 nearby edge-on galaxies is revealing new and sometimes unexpected and startling results in their radio continuum emission. The observations were in wide bandwidths centered at 1.6 and 6.0 GHz. Unique to this survey is full polarization data showing magnetic field structures in unprecedented detail, resolution and sensitivity for such a large sample. A wide range of new results are reported here, some never before seen in any galaxy. We see circular polarization and variability in active galactic nuclei (AGNs), in-disk discrete features, disk-halo structures sometimes only seen in polarization, and broad-scale halos with reversing magnetic fields, among others. This paper summarizes some of the CHANG-ES results seen thus far. Released images can be found at https://www.queensu.ca/changes.

Astro2020: How does dust escape from galaxies?

Whenever gas is blown out of a galaxy, chances are that it contains some cosmic dust. This dust is an important part of the metals budget for the circumgalactic and intergalactic media, and traces the outflow and stripping history of the galaxy. The dust is also interesting in its own right, as dust plays an essential role in many astrophysical processes. We have only begun to learn about circumgalactic dust, and in particular we do not know how (and when) it escapes its host galaxy. Here we describe the prospects for measuring the dust mass and properties around many individual galaxies, which will form the basis for understanding how the dust got there.

Strategically Simple Mechanisms

We define and investigate a property of mechanisms that we call "strategic simplicity," and that is meant to capture the idea that, in strategically simple mechanisms, strategic choices require limited strategic sophistication. We define a mechanism to be strategically simple if choices can be based on first-order beliefs about the other agents' preferences and first-order certainty about the other agents' rationality alone, and there is no need for agents to form higher-order beliefs, because such beliefs are irrelevant to the optimal strategies. All dominant strategy mechanisms are strategically simple. But many more mechanisms are strategically simple. In particular, strategically simple mechanisms may be more flexible than dominant strategy mechanisms in the bilateral trade problem and the voting problem.

Exploring Reionization-Era Quasars IV: Discovery of Six New $z \gtrsim 6.5$ Quasars with DES, VHS and unWISE Photometry

This is the fourth paper in a series of publications aiming at discovering quasars at the epoch of reionization. In this paper, we expand our search for $z\sim 7$ quasars to the footprint of the Dark Energy Survey (DES) Data Release One (DR1), covering $\sim 5000$ deg$^2$ of new area. We select $z\sim 7$ quasar candidates using deep optical, near-infrared (near-IR) and mid-IR photometric data from the DES DR1, the VISTA Hemisphere Survey (VHS), the VISTA Kilo-degree Infrared Galaxy (VIKING) survey, the UKIRT InfraRed Deep Sky Surveys -- Large Area Survey (ULAS) and the unblurred coadds from the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explore ($WISE$) images (unWISE). The inclusion of DES and unWISE photometry allows the search to reach $\sim$ 1 magnitude fainter, comparing to our $z \gtrsim 6.5$ quasar survey in the northern sky (Wang et al. 2018). We report the initial discovery and spectroscopic confirmation of six new luminous quasars at $z>6.4$, including an object at $z=7.02$, the fourth quasar yet known at $z>7$, from a small fraction of candidates observed thus far. Based on the recent measurement of $z \sim 6.7 $ quasar luminosity function using the quasar sample from our survey in the northern sky, we estimate that there will be $\gtrsim$ 55 quasars at $z > 6.5$ at $M_{1450} < -24.5$ in the full DES footprint.

Motivic multiple zeta values reletive to μ_2

We establish a short exact sequence about depth-graded motivic double zeta values of even weight relative to $μ_2$. We find a basis for the depth-graded motivic double zeta values relative to $μ_2$ of even weight and a basis for the depth-graded motivic triple zeta values relative to $μ_2$ of odd weight. As an application of our main results, we prove Kaneko and Tasaka's conjectures about the sum odd double zeta values and the classical double zeta values. We also prove an analogue of Kaneko and Tasaka's conjecture in depth three. At last we formulate a conjecture which is related to sum odd multiple zeta values in higher depth.

The Discovery of a Gravitationally Lensed Quasar at z = 6.51

Strong gravitational lensing provides a powerful probe of the physical properties of quasars and their host galaxies. A high fraction of the most luminous high-redshift quasars was predicted to be lensed due to magnification bias. However, no multiple imaged quasar was found at z>5 in previous surveys. We report the discovery of J043947.08+163415.7, a strongly lensed quasar at z=6.51, the first such object detected at the epoch of reionization, and the brightest quasar yet known at z>5. High-resolution HST imaging reveals a multiple imaged system with a maximum image separation theta ~ 0.2", best explained by a model of three quasar images lensed by a low luminosity galaxy at z~0.7, with a magnification factor of ~50. The existence of this source suggests that a significant population of strongly lensed, high redshift quasars could have been missed by previous surveys, as standard color selection techniques would fail when the quasar color is contaminated by the lensing galaxy.

The depth structure of motivic multiple zeta values

In this paper, we construct some maps related to the motivic Galois action on depth-graded motivic multiple zeta values. And from these maps we give some short exact sequences about depth-graded motivic multiple zeta values in depth two and three. In higher depth we conjecture that there are exact sequences of the same type. And we will show from three conjectures about depth-graded motivic Lie algebra we can nearly deduce the exact sequences conjectures in higher depth. At last we give a new proof of the result that the modulo zeta(2)$ version motivic double zeta values is generated by the totally odd part. And we reduce the well-known conjecture that the modulo zeta (2) version motivic triple zeta values is generated by the totally odd part to an isomorphism conjecture in linear algebra.

Depth-graded motivic Lie algebra

Consider the neutral Tannakian category mixed Tate motives over Z, in this paper we suggest a way to understand the structure of depth-graded motivic Lie subalgebra generated by the depth one part. We will show that from an isomorphism conjecture proposed by K. Tasaka we can deduce the F. Brown matrix conjecture and the non-degenerated conjecture about depth-graded motivic Lie subalgebra generated by the depth one part.

Enabling Low-power Duplex Visible Light Communication

The new generation of LED-based illuminating infrastructures has enabled a "dual-paradigm" where LEDs are used for both illumination and communication purposes. The ubiquity of lighting makes visible light communication (VLC) well suited for communication with mobile devices and sensor nodes in indoor environment. Existing research on VLC has primarily been focused on advancing the performance of one-way communication. In this paper, we present Retro-VLC, a low-power duplex VLC system that enables a mobile device to perform bi-directional communication with the illuminating LEDs over the same light carrier. The design features a retro-reflector fabric that backscatters light, an LCD shutter that modulates information bits on the backscattered light carrier, and several low-power optimization techniques. We have prototyped the Reader system and made a few battery-free tag devices. Experimental results show that the tag can achieve a 10kbps downlink speed and 0.5kbps uplink speed over a distance of 2.4m. We also outline several potential applications of the proposed Retro-VLC system.

CHANG-ES X: Spatially-resolved Separation of Thermal Contribution from Radio Continuum Emission in Edge-on Galaxies

We analyze the application of star formation rate (SFR) calibrations using H$α$ and 22 micron infrared imaging data in predicting the thermal radio component for a test sample of 3 edge-on galaxies (NGC 891, NGC 3044, and NGC 4631) in the Continuum Halos in Nearby Galaxies -- an EVLA Survey (CHANG-ES). We use a mixture of H$α$ and 24 micron calibration from Calzetti et al. (2007), and a linear 22 micron only calibration from Jarrett et al. (2013) on the test sample. We apply these relations on a pixel-to-pixel basis to create thermal prediction maps in the two CHANG-ES bands: L- and C-band (1.5 GHz and 6.0 GHz, respectively). We analyze the resulting non-thermal spectral index maps, and find a characteristic steepening of the non-thermal spectral index with vertical distance from the disk after application of all methods. We find possible evidence of extinction in the 22 micron data as compared to 70 micron Spitzer Multband Imaging Photometer (MIPS) imaging in NGC 891. We analyze a larger sample of edge-on and face-on galaxy 25 micron to 100 micron flux ratios, and find that the ratios for edge-ons are systematically lower by a factor of 1.36, a result we attribute to excess extinction in the mid-IR in edge-ons. We introduce a new calibration for correcting the H$α$ luminosity for dust when galaxies are edge-on or very dusty.

Modeling the shock-cloud interaction in SN 1006: unveiling the origin of nonthermal X-ray and gamma-ray emission

The supernova remnant SN 1006 is a source of high-energy particles and its southwestern limb is interacting with a dense ambient cloud, thus being a promising region for gamma-ray hadronic emission. We aim at describing the physics and the nonthermal emission associated with the shock-cloud interaction to derive the physical parameters of the cloud (poorly constrained by the data analysis), to ascertain the origin of the observed spatial variations in the spectral properties of the X-ray synchrotron emission, and to predict spectral and morphological features of the resulting gamma-ray emission. We performed 3-D magnetohydrodynamic simulations modeling the evolution of SN 1006 and its interaction with the ambient cloud, and explored different model setups. By applying the REMLIGHT code on the model results, we synthesized the synchrotron X-ray emission, and compared it with actual observations, to constrain the parameters of the model. We also synthesized the leptonic and hadronic gamma-ray emission from the models, deriving constraints on the energy content of the hadrons accelerated at the southwestern limb. We found that the impact of the SN 1006 shock front with a uniform cloud with density 0.5 cm^-3 can explain the observed morphology, the azimuthal variations of the cutoff frequency of the X-ray synchrotron emission, and the shock proper motion in the interaction region. Our results show that the current upper limit for the total hadronic energy in the southwestern limb is 2.5e49 erg.

Chandra survey of nearby highly inclined disk galaxies -- IV: New insights into the working of stellar feedback

Galaxy evolution is regulated by the interplay between galactic disks and their surrounding medium. We study this interplay by examining how the galactic coronal emission efficiency of stellar feedback depends on the (surface and specific) star formation rates (SFRs) and other parameters for a sample of 52 Chandra-observed nearby highly inclined disk galaxies. We first measure the star forming galactic disk sizes, as well as the SFRs of these galaxies, using data from the Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer, and then show that 1) the specific 0.5-2~keV luminosity of the coronal emission correlates with the specific SFR in a {\sl sub-linear} fashion: on average, $L_X/L_K \propto (SFR/M_*)^Γ$ with $Γ=0.29\pm0.12$; 2) the efficiency of the emission $ L_X/SFR$ decreases with increasing surface SFR ($I_{SFR}$; $Γ= -0.44\pm0.12$); and 3) the characteristic temperature of the X-ray-emitting plasma weakly correlates with $I_{SFR}$ ($Γ= 0.08\pm0.04$). These results, somewhat surprising and anti-intuitive, suggest that a) the linear correlation between $L_X$ and SFR, as commonly presented, is largely due to the correlation of these two parameters with galaxy mass; b) much of the mechanical energy from stellar feedback likely drives global outflows with little X-ray cooling and with a mass-loading efficiency decreasing fast with increasing $I_{SFR}$ ($Γ\lesssim -0.5$); c) these outflows heat and inflate the medium around the galactic disks of massive galaxies, reducing its radiative cooling rate, whereas for relatively low-mass galaxies, the energy in the outflows is probably dissipated in regions far away from the galactic disks.

CHANG-ES IV: Radio continuum emission of 35 edge-on galaxies observed with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array in D-configuration, Data Release 1

We present the first part of the observations made for the Continuum Halos in Nearby Galaxies, an EVLA Survey (CHANG-ES) project. The aim of the CHANG-ES project is to study and characterize the nature of radio halos, their prevalence as well as their magnetic fields, and the cosmic rays illuminating these fields. This paper reports observations with the compact D configuration of the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) for the sample of 35 nearby edge-on galaxies of CHANG-ES. With the new wide bandwidth capabilities of the VLA, an unprecedented sensitivity was achieved for all polarization products. The beam resolution is an average of 9.6" and 36" with noise levels reaching approximately 6 and 30 microJy per beam for C- and L-bands, respectively (robust weighting). We present intensity maps in these two frequency bands (C and L), with different weightings, as well as spectral index maps, polarization maps, and new measurements of star formation rates (SFRs). The data products described herein are available to the public in the CHANG-ES data release available at www.queensu.ca/changes. We also present evidence of a trend among galaxies with larger halos having higher SFR surface density, and we show, for the first time, a radio continuum image of the median galaxy, taking advantage of the collective signal-to-noise ratio of 30 of our galaxies. This image shows clearly that a typical spiral galaxy is surrounded by a halo of magnetic fields and cosmic rays.
