Poverty Mapping: Data, Models and Applications

Poverty mapping is increasingly important for monitoring Sustainable Development Goal 1 (SDG 1) of the United Nations 2030 Agenda, which aims to end poverty in all its forms everywhere. Yet timely and fine-resolution poverty estimation remains difficult because conventional census- and survey-based approaches are costly, infrequent, and often sparse precisely where deprivation is most severe. As poverty emerges from complex socioeconomic systems shaped by human mobility, social interactions, infrastructure, and economic activities, emerging computational methods and nontraditional data sources have created new opportunities for poverty estimation and mapping. At the intersection of statistical physics, complex systems science, and data science, these approaches enable poverty estimation at finer spatial and temporal resolutions. This review summarizes the main concepts of poverty and the principal frameworks used to measure it, and examines recent advances on poverty estimation and mapping using satellite imagery, mobile phone data, social media data, and multisource data fusion. The review also discusses persistent challenges related to representativeness, transferability across regions, interpretability, and uncertainty quantification. Finally, the review clarifies both the analytical promise and the practical limits of contemporary poverty mapping.

The development of a high granular crystal calorimeter prototype of VLAST

Very Large Area gamma-ray Space Telescope (VLAST) is the next-generation flagship space observatory for high-energy gamma-ray detection proposed by China. The observation energy range covers from MeV to TeV and beyond, with acceptance of 10 m^2sr. The calorimeter serves as a crucial subdetector of VLAST, responsible for high-precision energy measurement and electron/proton discrimination. This discrimination capability is essential for accurately identifying gamma-ray events among the background of charged particles. To accommodate such an extensive energy range, a high dynamic range readout scheme employing dual avalanche photodiodes (APDs) has been developed, achieving a remarkable dynamic range of 10^6. Furthermore, a high granular prototype based on bismuth germanate (BGO) cubic scintillation crystals has been developed. This high granularity enables detailed imaging of the particle showers, improving both energy resolution and particle identification. The prototype's performance is evaluated through cosmic ray testing, providing valuable data for optimizing the final calorimeter design for VLAST.

Advanced simulation paradigm of human behaviour unveils complex financial systemic projection

The high-order complexity of human behaviour is likely the root cause of extreme difficulty in financial market projections. We consider that behavioural simulation can unveil systemic dynamics to support analysis. Simulating diverse human groups must account for the behavioural heterogeneity, especially in finance. To address the fidelity of simulated agents, on the basis of agent-based modeling, we propose a new paradigm of behavioural simulation where each agent is supported and driven by a hierarchical knowledge architecture. This architecture, integrating language and professional models, imitates behavioural processes in specific scenarios. Evaluated on futures markets, our simulator achieves a 13.29% deviation in simulating crisis scenarios whose price increase rate reaches 285.34%. Under normal conditions, our simulator also exhibits lower mean square error in predicting futures price of specific commodities. This technique bridges non-quantitative information with diverse market behaviour, offering a promising platform to simulate investor behaviour and its impact on market dynamics.

Developing a Dual-Stage Vision Transformer Model for Lung Disease Classification

Lung diseases have become a prevalent problem throughout the United States, affecting over 34 million people. Accurate and timely diagnosis of the different types of lung diseases is critical, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) methods could speed up these processes. A dual-stage vision transformer is built throughout this research by integrating a Vision Transformer (ViT) and a Swin Transformer to classify 14 different lung diseases from X-ray scans of patients with these diseases. The proposed model achieved an accuracy of 92.06% on a label-level when making predictions on an unseen testing subset of the dataset after data preprocessing and training the neural network. The model showed promise for accurately classifying lung diseases and diagnosing patients who suffer from these harmful diseases.

Channel Modeling Framework for Both Communications and Bistatic Sensing Under 3GPP Standard

Integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) is considered a promising technology in the B5G/6G networks. The channel model is essential for an ISAC system to evaluate the communication and sensing performance. Most existing channel modeling studies focus on the monostatic ISAC channel. In this paper, the channel modeling framework for bistatic ISAC is considered. The proposed channel modeling framework extends the current 3GPP channel modeling framework and ensures the compatibility with the communication channel model. To support the bistatic sensing function, several key features for sensing are added. First, more clusters with weaker power are generated and retained to characterize the potential sensing targets. Second, the target model can be either deterministic or statistical, based on different sensing scenarios. Furthermore, for the statistical case, different reflection models are employed in the generation of rays, taking into account spatial coherence. The effectiveness of the proposed bistatic ISAC channel model framework is validated by both ray tracing simulations and experiment studies. The compatibility with the 3GPP communication channel model and how to use this framework for sensing evaluation are also demonstrated.

A Back-End Electronics Based on Fiber Communication for Small to Medium-Scale Physics Experiments

Many small and medium-sized physics experiments are being conducted worldwide. These experiments have similar requirements for readout electronics, especially the back-end electronics. Some experiments need a trigger logic unit(TLU) to provide timing and synchronous control signals. This paper introduces a back-end electronics design for small and medium-sized physics experiments; it adopts a daughter-motherboard structure integrated TLU function to provide greater flexibility. Different interfaces and protocols can be flexibly selected according to data bandwidth requirements. It supports 32 optical fiber interfaces based on a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) of normal IOs with 400Mbps of data bandwidth for each channel. At the same time, it supports 16 high-speed communication interfaces based on GTX port with several Gbps data bandwidth of each channel. For the TLU function, this design has 8 HDMI interfaces and one RJ45 interface to provide synchronous triggers and other control signals, and it has six analog LEMOs and four digital LEMOs to accept asynchronous signals from an external source. These design specifications can meet the needs of most small and medium-sized experiments. This set of back-end electronics has been successfully used in experiments such as PandaX-III, VLAST, and moungraphy. Moreover, it has successfully conducted beam tests with a readout of the data of VLAST detectors at CERN.

Leveraging Data Mining, Active Learning, and Domain Adaptation in a Multi-Stage, Machine Learning-Driven Approach for the Efficient Discovery of Advanced Acidic Oxygen Evolution Electrocatalysts

Developing advanced catalysts for acidic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is crucial for sustainable hydrogen production. This study introduces a novel, multi-stage machine learning (ML) approach to streamline the discovery and optimization of complex multi-metallic catalysts. Our method integrates data mining, active learning, and domain adaptation throughout the materials discovery process. Unlike traditional trial-and-error methods, this approach systematically narrows the exploration space using domain knowledge with minimized reliance on subjective intuition. Then the active learning module efficiently refines element composition and synthesis conditions through iterative experimental feedback. The process culminated in the discovery of a promising Ru-Mn-Ca-Pr oxide catalyst. Our workflow also enhances theoretical simulations with domain adaptation strategy, providing deeper mechanistic insights aligned with experimental findings. By leveraging diverse data sources and multiple ML strategies, we establish an efficient pathway for electrocatalyst discovery and optimization. This comprehensive, data-driven approach represents a paradigm shift and potentially new benchmark in electrocatalysts research.

Beyond network centrality: Individual-level behavioral traits for predicting information superspreaders in social media

Understanding the heterogeneous role of individuals in large-scale information spreading is essential to manage online behavior as well as its potential offline consequences. To this end, most existing studies from diverse research domains focus on the disproportionate role played by highly-connected ``hub" individuals. However, we demonstrate here that information superspreaders in online social media are best understood and predicted by simultaneously considering two individual-level behavioral traits: influence and susceptibility. Specifically, we derive a nonlinear network-based algorithm to quantify individuals' influence and susceptibility from multiple spreading event data. By applying the algorithm to large-scale data from Twitter and Weibo, we demonstrate that individuals' estimated influence and susceptibility scores enable predictions of future superspreaders above and beyond network centrality, and reveal new insights on the network position of the superspreaders.

Learning nonparametric DAGs with incremental information via high-order HSIC

Score-based methods for learning Bayesain networks(BN) aim to maximizing the global score functions. However, if local variables have direct and indirect dependence simultaneously, the global optimization on score functions misses edges between variables with indirect dependent relationship, of which scores are smaller than those with direct dependent relationship. In this paper, we present an identifiability condition based on a determined subset of parents to identify the underlying DAG. By the identifiability condition, we develop a two-phase algorithm namely optimal-tuning (OT) algorithm to locally amend the global optimization. In the optimal phase, an optimization problem based on first-order Hilbert-Schmidt independence criterion (HSIC) gives an estimated skeleton as the initial determined parents subset. In the tuning phase, the skeleton is locally tuned by deletion, addition and DAG-formalization strategies using the theoretically proved incremental properties of high-order HSIC. Numerical experiments for different synthetic datasets and real-world datasets show that the OT algorithm outperforms existing methods. Especially in Sigmoid Mix model with the size of the graph being ${\rm\bf d=40}$, the structure intervention distance (SID) of the OT algorithm is 329.7 smaller than the one obtained by CAM, which indicates that the graph estimated by the OT algorithm misses fewer edges compared with CAM.Source code of the OT algorithm is available at https://github.com/YafeiannWang/optimal-tune-algorithm.

A High Spatial Resolution Muon Tomography Prototype System based on Micromegas Detector

Cosmic ray muon has strong penetrating power and no ionizing radiation hazards, which makes it an ideal probe for detecting special nuclear materials. In this paper, a high spatial resolution muon tomography system based on Micromegas detectors is proposed to optimize the imaging time and quality. The proposed system includes eight Micromegas detectors based on the thermal bonding technique and a scalable readout system. In addition, a multiplexing method based on position encoding is developed to reduce the number of electronics channels by order of magnitude. The spatial resolution of the proposed system with encoding readout can reach a value of hundred micrometers. Finally, a tomography test is performed, and test results show that this proposed system can image 2-cm objects and distinguish different materials.

Optical coherent dot-product chip for sophisticated deep learning regression

Optical implementations of neural networks (ONNs) herald the next-generation high-speed and energy-efficient deep learning computing by harnessing the technical advantages of large bandwidth and high parallelism of optics. However, due to the problems of incomplete numerical domain, limited hardware scale, or inadequate numerical accuracy, the majority of existing ONNs were studied for basic classification tasks. Given that regression is a fundamental form of deep learning and accounts for a large part of current artificial intelligence applications, it is necessary to master deep learning regression for further development and deployment of ONNs. Here, we demonstrate a silicon-based optical coherent dot-product chip (OCDC) capable of completing deep learning regression tasks. The OCDC adopts optical fields to carry out operations in complete real-value domain instead of in only positive domain. Via reusing, a single chip conducts matrix multiplications and convolutions in neural networks of any complexity. Also, hardware deviations are compensated via in-situ backpropagation control provided the simplicity of chip architecture. Therefore, the OCDC meets the requirements for sophisticated regression tasks and we successfully demonstrate a representative neural network, the AUTOMAP (a cutting-edge neural network model for image reconstruction). The quality of reconstructed images by the OCDC and a 32-bit digital computer is comparable. To the best of our knowledge, there is no precedent of performing such state-of-the-art regression tasks on ONN chip. It is anticipated that the OCDC can promote novel accomplishment of ONNs in modern AI applications including autonomous driving, natural language processing, and scientific study.

Information Cocoons in Online Navigation

Social media and online navigation bring us enjoyable experience in accessing information, and simultaneously create information cocoons (ICs) in which we are unconsciously trapped with limited and biased information. We provide a formal definition of IC in the scenario of online navigation. Subsequently, by analyzing real recommendation networks extracted from Science, PNAS and Amazon websites, and testing mainstream algorithms in disparate recommender systems, we demonstrate that similarity-based recommendation techniques result in ICs, which suppress the system navigability by hundreds of times. We further propose a flexible recommendation strategy that solves the IC-induced problem and improves retrieval accuracy in navigation, demonstrated by simulations on real data and online experiments on the largest video website in China.

Deep Stock Representation Learning: From Candlestick Charts to Investment Decisions

We propose a novel investment decision strategy (IDS) based on deep learning. The performance of many IDSs is affected by stock similarity. Most existing stock similarity measurements have the problems: (a) The linear nature of many measurements cannot capture nonlinear stock dynamics; (b) The estimation of many similarity metrics (e.g. covariance) needs very long period historic data (e.g. 3K days) which cannot represent current market effectively; (c) They cannot capture translation-invariance. To solve these problems, we apply Convolutional AutoEncoder to learn a stock representation, based on which we propose a novel portfolio construction strategy by: (i) using the deeply learned representation and modularity optimisation to cluster stocks and identify diverse sectors, (ii) picking stocks within each cluster according to their Sharpe ratio (Sharpe 1994). Overall this strategy provides low-risk high-return portfolios. We use the Financial Times Stock Exchange 100 Index (FTSE 100) data for evaluation. Results show our portfolio outperforms FTSE 100 index and many well known funds in terms of total return in 2000 trading days.

Superpixel Segmentation Using Gaussian Mixture Model

Superpixel segmentation algorithms are to partition an image into perceptually coherence atomic regions by assigning every pixel a superpixel label. Those algorithms have been wildly used as a preprocessing step in computer vision works, as they can enormously reduce the number of entries of subsequent algorithms. In this work, we propose an alternative superpixel segmentation method based on Gaussian mixture model (GMM) by assuming that each superpixel corresponds to a Gaussian distribution, and assuming that each pixel is generated by first randomly choosing one distribution from several Gaussian distributions which are defined to be related to that pixel, and then the pixel is drawn from the selected distribution. Based on this assumption, each pixel is supposed to be drawn from a mixture of Gaussian distributions with unknown parameters (GMM). An algorithm based on expectation-maximization method is applied to estimate the unknown parameters. Once the unknown parameters are obtained, the superpixel label of a pixel is determined by a posterior probability. The success of applying GMM to superpixel segmentation depends on the two major differences between the traditional GMM-based clustering and the proposed one: data points in our model may be non-identically distributed, and we present an approach to control the shape of the estimated Gaussian functions by adjusting their covariance matrices. Our method is of linear complexity with respect to the number of pixels. The proposed algorithm is inherently parallel and can get faster speed by adding simple OpenMP directives to our implementation. According to our experiments, our algorithm outperforms the state-of-the-art superpixel algorithms in accuracy and presents a competitive performance in computational efficiency.

Complex Network Properties of Chinese Natural Science Basic Research

In this paper, we studied the research areas of Chinese natural science basic research from a point view of complex network. Two research areas are considered to be connected if they appear in one fund proposal. The explicit network of such connections using data from 1999 to 2004 is constructed. The analysis of the real data shows that the degree distribution of the {\bf research areas network} (RAN) may be better fitted by the exponential distribution. It displays small world effect in which randomly chosen pairs of research areas are typically separated by only a short path of intermediate research areas. The average distance of RAN decreases with time, while the average clustering coefficient increases with time, which indicates that the scientific study would like to be integrated together in terms of the studied areas. The relationship between the clustering coefficient $C(k)$ and the degree $k$ indicates that there is no hierarchical organization in RAN.
