LoRA-Based Continual Learning with Constraints on Critical Parameter Changes

LoRA-based continual learning represents a promising avenue for leveraging pre-trained models in downstream continual learning tasks. Recent studies have shown that orthogonal LoRA tuning effectively mitigates forgetting. However, this work unveils that under orthogonal LoRA tuning, the critical parameters for pre-tasks still change notably after learning post-tasks. To address this problem, we directly propose freezing the most critical parameter matrices in the Vision Transformer (ViT) for pre-tasks before learning post-tasks. In addition, building on orthogonal LoRA tuning, we propose orthogonal LoRA composition (LoRAC) based on QR decomposition, which may further enhance the plasticity of our method. Elaborate ablation studies and extensive comparisons demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed method. Our results indicate that our method achieves state-of-the-art (SOTA) performance on several well-known continual learning benchmarks. For instance, on the Split CIFAR-100 dataset, our method shows a 6.35\% improvement in accuracy and a 3.24\% reduction in forgetting compared to previous methods. Our code is available at https://github.com/learninginvision/LoRAC-IPC.

Six-DoF Stewart Platform Motion Simulator Control using Switchable Model Predictive Control

Due to excellent mechanism characteristics of high rigidity, maneuverability and strength-to-weight ratio, 6 Degree-of-Freedom (DoF) Stewart structure is widely adopted to construct flight simulator platforms for replicating motion feelings during training pilots. Unlike conventional serial link manipulator based mechanisms, Upset Prevention and Recovery Training (UPRT) in complex flight status is often accompanied by large speed and violent rate of change in angular velocity of the simulator. However, Classical Washout Filter (CWF) based Motion Cueing Algorithm (MCA) shows limitations in providing rapid response to drive motors to satisfy high accuracy performance requirements. This paper aims at exploiting Model Predictive Control (MPC) based MCA which is proved to be efficient in Hexapod-based motion simulators through controlling over limited linear workspace. With respect to uncertainties and control solution errors from the extraction of Terminal Constraints (COTC), this paper proposes a Switchable Model Predictive Control (S-MPC) based MCA under model adaptive architecture to mitigate the solution uncertainties and inaccuracies. It is verified that high accurate tracking is achievable using the MPC-based MCA with COTC within the simulator operating envelope. The proposed method provides optimal tracking solutions by switching to MPC based MCA without COTC outside the operating envelope. By demonstrating the UPRT with horizontal stall conditions following Average Absolute Scale(AAS) evaluation criteria, the proposed S-MPC based MCA outperforms MPC based MCA and SWF based MCA by 42.34% and 65.30%, respectively.

CoDeGAN: Contrastive Disentanglement for Generative Adversarial Network

Disentanglement, a critical concern in interpretable machine learning, has also garnered significant attention from the computer vision community. Many existing GAN-based class disentanglement (unsupervised) approaches, such as InfoGAN and its variants, primarily aim to maximize the mutual information (MI) between the generated image and its latent codes. However, this focus may lead to a tendency for the network to generate highly similar images when presented with the same latent class factor, potentially resulting in mode collapse or mode dropping. To alleviate this problem, we propose \texttt{CoDeGAN} (Contrastive Disentanglement for Generative Adversarial Networks), where we relax similarity constraints for disentanglement from the image domain to the feature domain. This modification not only enhances the stability of GAN training but also improves their disentangling capabilities. Moreover, we integrate self-supervised pre-training into CoDeGAN to learn semantic representations, significantly facilitating unsupervised disentanglement. Extensive experimental results demonstrate the superiority of our method over state-of-the-art approaches across multiple benchmarks. The code is available at https://github.com/learninginvision/CoDeGAN.
