Toward the Tradeoffs between Privacy, Fairness and Utility in Federated Learning

Federated Learning (FL) is a novel privacy-protection distributed machine learning paradigm that guarantees user privacy and prevents the risk of data leakage due to the advantage of the client's local training. Researchers have struggled to design fair FL systems that ensure fairness of results. However, the interplay between fairness and privacy has been less studied. Increasing the fairness of FL systems can have an impact on user privacy, while an increase in user privacy can affect fairness. In this work, on the client side, we use fairness metrics, such as Demographic Parity (DemP), Equalized Odds (EOs), and Disparate Impact (DI), to construct the local fair model. To protect the privacy of the client model, we propose a privacy-protection fairness FL method. The results show that the accuracy of the fair model with privacy increases because privacy breaks the constraints of the fairness metrics. In our experiments, we conclude the relationship between privacy, fairness and utility, and there is a tradeoff between these.

EdgeLaaS: Edge Learning as a Service for Knowledge-Centric Connected Healthcare

By introducing networking technologies and services into healthcare infrastructures (e.g., multimodal sensors and smart devices) that are deployed to supervise a person's health condition, the traditional healthcare system is being revolutionized toward knowledge-centric connected healthcare (KCCH), where persons will take their own responsibility for their healthcare in a knowledge-centric way. Due to the volume, velocity, and variety of healthcare supervision data generated by these healthcare infrastructures, an urgent and strategic issue is how to efficiently process a person's healthcare supervision data with the right knowledge of the right guardians (e.g., relatives, nurses, and doctors) at the right time. To solve this issue, the naming and routing criterion of medical knowledge is studied. With this offloaded medical knowledge, we propose an edge learning as a service (EdgeLaaS) framework for KCCH to locally process health supervision data. In this framework, edge learning nodes can help the patient choose better advice from the right guardians in real time when some emergencies occur. Two application cases: 1) fast self-help and 2) mobile help pre-calling are studied. Performance evaluations demonstrate the superiority of KCCH and EdgeLaaS, respectively.

Writable spin wave nanochannels in an artificial-spin-ice-mediated ferromagnetic thin film

Magnonics, which employs spin-waves to transmit and process information, is a promising venue for low-power data processing. One of the major challenges is the local control of the spin-wave propagation path. Here, we introduce the concept of writable magnonics by taking advantage of the highly flexible reconfigurability and rewritability of artificial spin ice systems. Using micromagnetic simulations, we show that globally switchable spin-wave propagation and the locally writable spin-wave nanochannels can be realized in a ferromagnetic thin film underlying an artificial pinwheel spin ice. The rewritable magnonics enabled by reconfigurable spin wave nanochannels provides a unique setting to design programmable magnonic circuits and logic devices for ultra-low power applications.

Video Annotation for Visual Tracking via Selection and Refinement

Deep learning based visual trackers entail offline pre-training on large volumes of video datasets with accurate bounding box annotations that are labor-expensive to achieve. We present a new framework to facilitate bounding box annotations for video sequences, which investigates a selection-and-refinement strategy to automatically improve the preliminary annotations generated by tracking algorithms. A temporal assessment network (T-Assess Net) is proposed which is able to capture the temporal coherence of target locations and select reliable tracking results by measuring their quality. Meanwhile, a visual-geometry refinement network (VG-Refine Net) is also designed to further enhance the selected tracking results by considering both target appearance and temporal geometry constraints, allowing inaccurate tracking results to be corrected. The combination of the above two networks provides a principled approach to ensure the quality of automatic video annotation. Experiments on large scale tracking benchmarks demonstrate that our method can deliver highly accurate bounding box annotations and significantly reduce human labor by 94.0%, yielding an effective means to further boost tracking performance with augmented training data.

Too Expensive to Attack: Enlarge the Attack Expense through Joint Defense at the Edge

The distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack is detrimental to businesses and individuals as people are heavily relying on the Internet. Due to remarkable profits, crackers favor DDoS as cybersecurity weapons to attack a victim. Even worse, edge servers are more vulnerable. Current solutions lack adequate consideration to the expense of attackers and inter-defender collaborations. Hence, we revisit the DDoS attack and defense, clarifying the advantages and disadvantages of both parties. We further propose a joint defense framework to defeat attackers by incurring a significant increment of required bots and enlarging attack expenses. The quantitative evaluation and experimental assessment showcase that such expense can surge up to thousands of times. The skyrocket of expenses leads to heavy loss to the cracker, which prevents further attacks.

Tailoring magnetization reversal of a single-domain bar nanomagnet via its end geometry

Nanoscale single-domain bar magnets are building blocks for a variety of fundamental and applied mesoscopic magnetic systems, such as artificial spin ices, magnetic shape-morphing microbots as well as magnetic majority logic gates. The magnetization reversal switching field of the bar nanomagnets is a crucial parameter that determines the physical properties and functionalities of their constituted artificial systems. Previous methods on tuning the magnetization reversal switching field of a bar nanomagnet usually rely on modifying its aspect ratio, such as its length, width and/or thickness. Here, we show that the switching field of a bar nanomagnet saturates when extending its length beyond a certain value, preventing further tailoring of the magnetization reversal via aspect ratios. We showcase highly tunable switching field of a bar nanomagent by tailoring its end geometry without altering its size. This provides an easy method to control the magnetization reversal of a single-domain bar nanomagnet. It would enable new research and/or applications, such as designing artificial spin ices with additional tuning parameters, engineering magnetic microbots with more flexibility as well as developing magnetic quantum-dot cellular automata systems for low power computing.

Too Expensive to Attack: A Joint Defense Framework to Mitigate Distributed Attacks for the Internet of Things Grid

The distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack is detrimental to businesses and individuals as we are heavily relying on the Internet. Due to remarkable profits, crackers favor DDoS as cybersecurity weapons in attacking servers, computers, IoT devices, and even the entire Internet. Many current detection and mitigation solutions concentrate on specific technologies in combating DDoS, whereas the attacking expense and the cross-defender collaboration have not drawn enough attention. Under this circumstance, we revisit the DDoS attack and defense in terms of attacking cost and populations of both parties, proposing a joint defense framework to incur higher attacking expense in a grid of Internet service providers (ISPs), businesses, individuals, and third-party organizations (IoT Grid). Meanwhile, the defender's cost does not grow much during combats. The skyrocket of attacking expense discourages profit-driven attackers from launching further attacks effectively. The quantitative evaluation and experimental assessment reinforce the effectiveness of our framework.

Leveraging AI and Intelligent Reflecting Surface for Energy-Efficient Communication in 6G IoT

The ever-increasing data traffic, various delay-sensitive services, and the massive deployment of energy-limited Internet of Things (IoT) devices have brought huge challenges to the current communication networks, motivating academia and industry to move to the sixth-generation (6G) network. With the powerful capability of data transmission and processing, 6G is considered as an enabler for IoT communication with low latency and energy cost. In this paper, we propose an artificial intelligence (AI) and intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) empowered energy-efficiency communication system for 6G IoT. First, we design a smart and efficient communication architecture including the IRS-aided data transmission and the AI-driven network resource management mechanisms. Second, an energy efficiency-maximizing model under given transmission latency for 6G IoT system is formulated, which jointly optimizes the settings of all communication participants, i.e. IoT transmission power, IRS-reflection phase shift, and BS detection matrix. Third, a deep reinforcement learning (DRL) empowered network resource control and allocation scheme is proposed to solve the formulated optimization model. Based on the network and channel status, the DRL-enabled scheme facilities the energy-efficiency and low-latency communication. Finally, experimental results verified the effectiveness of our proposed communication system for 6G IoT.

A Fast and Scalable Authentication Scheme in IoT for Smart Living

Numerous resource-limited smart objects (SOs) such as sensors and actuators have been widely deployed in smart environments, opening new attack surfaces to intruders. The severe security flaw discourages the adoption of the Internet of things in smart living. In this paper, we leverage fog computing and microservice to push certificate authority (CA) functions to the proximity of data sources. Through which, we can minimize attack surfaces and authentication latency, and result in a fast and scalable scheme in authenticating a large volume of resource-limited devices. Then, we design lightweight protocols to implement the scheme, where both a high level of security and low computation workloads on SO (no bilinear pairing requirement on the client-side) is accomplished. Evaluations demonstrate the efficiency and effectiveness of our scheme in handling authentication and registration for a large number of nodes, meanwhile protecting them against various threats to smart living. Finally, we showcase the success of computing intelligence movement towards data sources in handling complicated services.

Electromagnetic Wave Propagation in GLHUA Invisible Sphere by GL No Scattering Full Wave Modeling and Inversion

Using GL no scattering full wave modeling and inversion, we create a GLHUA pre cloak electromagnetic (EM) material in the virtual sphere that makes the sphere is invisible. The invisible sphere is called GLHUA sphere. In GLHUA sphere, the Pre cloak relative parameter is not less than 1; the parameters and their derivative are continuous across the boundary r=R2 and the parameters are going to infinity at origin r=0. The phase velocity of EM wave in the sphere is less than light speed and going to zero at origin. The EM wave field excited in the outside of the sphere can not be disturbed by GLHUA sphere. By GL full wave method, we rigorously proved the incident EM wave field excited in outside of GLHUA sphere and propagation through the sphere without any scattering by the sphere, the total EM field in outside of the sphere equal to the incident wave field. Moreover, we prove that in GLHUA sphere with the pre cloak material, when r is going to origin, EM wave field propagation in GLHUA sphere is going to zero. We propose a $N$ dimensional MAXWELL equations. High-Performance Long-Term Tracking with Meta-Updater

Long-term visual tracking has drawn increasing attention because it is much closer to practical applications than short-term tracking. Most top-ranked long-term trackers adopt the offline-trained Siamese architectures, thus, they cannot benefit from great progress of short-term trackers with online update. However, it is quite risky to straightforwardly introduce online-update-based trackers to solve the long-term problem, due to long-term uncertain and noisy observations. In this work, we propose a novel offline-trained Meta-Updater to address an important but unsolved problem: Is the tracker ready for updating in the current frame? The proposed meta-updater can effectively integrate geometric, discriminative, and appearance cues in a sequential manner, and then mine the sequential information with a designed cascaded LSTM module. Our meta-updater learns a binary output to guide the tracker's update and can be easily embedded into different trackers. This work also introduces a long-term tracking framework consisting of an online local tracker, an online verifier, a SiamRPN-based re-detector, and our meta-updater. Numerous experimental results on the VOT2018LT, VOT2019LT, OxUvALT, TLP, and LaSOT benchmarks show that our tracker performs remarkably better than other competing algorithms. Novel GLHUA Electromagnetic Invisible Double Layer Cloak With Relative Parameters Not Less Than 1 and GL No Scattering Inversion, radial R in the sphere coordinate can be negative in a negative space world

Using GILD and GL no scattering modeling and inversion, we find a class of the nonzero solution of the zero scattering nonlinear inversion equation and use it to create our GLHUA cloak with relative EM parameter not less than 1 for each layer with any thickness. major new ingredients are: (1) In the outer layer, R1 < r < R2, the relative radial electric permittivity and radial magnetic permeability equal to 1; the relative angular electric permittivity and magnetic permeability are equal to 0.5((H/C)^(Alpha)+(C/H)^(Alpha)),C=R2-R1, H= r-R1; (2) In the inner layer cloak R0 < r < R1 , the relative radial electric permittivity and radial magnetic permeability equal to 1; the relative angular electric permittivity and magnetic permeability are equal to 0.5((H/C)(R0/r))^(Alpha)+((C/H)(r/R0))^(Alpha)),C=R1-R0, H= R1-r; (3) The phase velocity of wave in GLHUA cloak is less than light speed and tends to zero at r=R1;(4) We proved that GLHUA cloak is complete invisible cloak with concealment; in GLHUA cloak, the EM wave field is going to zero at r=R1. The incident wave excited in outside of GLHUA cloak can not be disturbed by cloak, and the wave can not propagation penetrate into the concealment; (5) The incident wave excited in concealment can not propagation to go to outside of the cloak, the incident wave can not be disturbed in the concealment.(6) The idea and no scattering modeling and inversion and practicable GLHUA cloak are new invisible natural science attract more researcher's effort. In my [33].we discover negative space, in which sphere radial R is negative. We found an exact full EM wave propagation solution of the EM equation in the GLHUA double layer invisible cloak, which is breakthrough progress. Analytical EM wave propagation in GLHUA cloak is published in this version. We create a novel sphere radial transformation from negative infinite to R_1 sphere radial transformation.

The Theoretical Proof for GLHUA EM Invisible Double Layer Cloak By Using GL No Scattering Modeling and Inversion

In this paper, we proposed the GLHUA double layer cloak; proved the properties of GLHUA double layer cloak; Using GL no scattering inversion and the pre cloak condition 6.1 to 6.4 in paper [1], we create GLHUA outer layer cloak radial relative parameter and angular relative parameter theoretically. We proved theorem 4.1 to theorem 4.4 that the phase velocity of the electromagnetic wave in GLHUA outer layer cloak is less than light speed and tends to zero at the boundary $r=R_1$, the EM wave tends to zero at $r=R1$; When source $r_s > R_2$ in the outside of the cloak and observer $r_o < R_o$ in the concealment, then $\vec E(\vec r_o)=0$ and $\vec H(\vec r_o)=0$ that is proved in theorem 5.1 and 5.3. We prove that the EM wave excited in outside of the cloak can not propagation penetrate into the concealment. In theorem 5.4 to 5.6, we rigorously proved the EM wave excited in outside of the cloak can not be disturbed by the cloak. In theorem 6.1 to theorem 6.6, we prove that the EM wave excited in the concealment can not propagate to outside of GLHUA inner cloak. we prove that the EM wave excited in the concealment can not be disturbed by the cloak. We theoretically prove that the GLHUA double cloak is invisible cloak with concealment and with relative parameter not less than 1; the GLHUA double layer cloak is practicable. In December of 2016, we submitted 3 papers to arXiv for GLHUA double layer cloak with relative parameters not less than 1. This is the third paper. The task and content of the three paper are different from each other. The second paper [1] and this Paper are theoretical base and proof of the subjects in paper arXiv:1612.02857. We find an exact analytical EM wave field of Maxwell EM equation in GLHUA cloak and mirage bridge wave. Patent of the GLHUA EM cloaks,GLHUA sphere and GL modeling and inversion methods are reserved by authors in GL Geophysical Laboratory.

GelSlim: A High-Resolution, Compact, Robust, and Calibrated Tactile-sensing Finger

This work describes the development of a high-resolution tactile-sensing finger for robot grasping. This finger, inspired by previous GelSight sensing techniques, features an integration that is slimmer, more robust, and with more homogeneous output than previous vision-based tactile sensors. To achieve a compact integration, we redesign the optical path from illumination source to camera by combining light guides and an arrangement of mirror reflections. We parameterize the optical path with geometric design variables and describe the tradeoffs between the finger thickness, the depth of field of the camera, and the size of the tactile sensing area. The sensor sustains the wear from continuous use -- and abuse -- in grasping tasks by combining tougher materials for the compliant soft gel, a textured fabric skin, a structurally rigid body, and a calibration process that maintains homogeneous illumination and contrast of the tactile images during use. Finally, we evaluate the sensor's durability along four metrics that track the signal quality during more than 3000 grasping experiments.

Slip Detection with Combined Tactile and Visual Information

Slip detection plays a vital role in robotic manipulation and it has long been a challenging problem in the robotic community. In this paper, we propose a new method based on deep neural network (DNN) to detect slip. The training data is acquired by a GelSight tactile sensor and a camera mounted on a gripper when we use a robot arm to grasp and lift 94 daily objects with different grasping forces and grasping positions. The DNN is trained to classify whether a slip occurred or not. To evaluate the performance of the DNN, we test 10 unseen objects in 152 grasps. A detection accuracy as high as 88.03% is achieved. It is anticipated that the accuracy can be further improved with a larger dataset. This method is beneficial for robots to make stable grasps, which can be widely applied to automatic force control, grasping strategy selection and fine manipulation.

Deep Learning-Based Food Calorie Estimation Method in Dietary Assessment

Obesity treatment requires obese patients to record all food intakes per day. Computer vision has been introduced to estimate calories from food images. In order to increase accuracy of detection and reduce the error of volume estimation in food calorie estimation, we present our calorie estimation method in this paper. To estimate calorie of food, a top view and side view is needed. Faster R-CNN is used to detect the food and calibration object. GrabCut algorithm is used to get each food's contour. Then the volume is estimated with the food and corresponding object. Finally we estimate each food's calorie. And the experiment results show our estimation method is effective.
