Light gap bullets in defocusing media with optical lattices

Searching for three-dimensional spatiotemporal solitons (also known as light/optical bullets) has recently attracted keen theoretical and experimental interests in nonlinear physics. Currently, optical lattices of diverse kinds have been introduced to the stabilization of light bullets, while the investigation for the light bullets of gap type -- nonlinear localized modes within the finite gap of the underlying linear Bloch spectrum -- is lacking. Herein, we address the formation and stabilization properties of such light gap bullets in periodic media with defocusing nonlinearity, theoretically and in numerical ways. The periodic media are based on two-dimensional periodic standing waves created in a coherent three-level atomic system which is driven to the regime of electromagnetically induced transparency, which in principle can also be replaced by photonic crystals in optics or optical lattices in ground-state ultracold atoms system. The temporal dispersion term is tuned to normal (positive) group velocity dispersion so that to launch the light gap bullets under self-repulsive nonlinearity; two types of such light gap bullets constructed as 3D gap solitons and vortices with topological charge m=1 within the first finite gap are reported and found to be robustly stable in the existence domains. On account of the light bullets were previously limited to the semi-infinite gap of periodic media and continuous nonlinear physical systems, the light gap bullets reported here thus supplement the missing type of three-dimensional spatiotemporal localized modes in periodic media which exhibit finite band gaps.

Gap solitons in parity-time symmetric moiré optical lattices

Parity-time(PT) symmetric lattices have been widely studied in controlling the flow of waves, and recently moiré superlattices, connecting the periodic and non-periodic potentials, are introduced for exploring unconventional physical properties in physics; while the combination of both and nonlinear waves therein remains unclear. Here, we report a theoretical survey of nonlinear wave localizations in PT symmetric moiré optical lattices, with the aim of revealing localized gap modes of different types and their stabilization mechanism. We uncover the formation, properties, and dynamics of fundamental and higherorder gap solitons as well as vortical ones with topological charge, all residing in the finite band gaps of the underlying linear-Bloch wave spectrum. The stability regions of the localized gap modes are inspected in two numerical ways: linear-stability analysis and direct perturbed simulations. Our results provide an insightful understanding of solitons physics in combined versatile platforms of PT symmetric systems and moiré patterns.

One-dimensional purely Lee-Huang-Yang fluids dominated by quantum fluctuations in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates

Lee-Huang-Yang (LHY) fluids are an exotic quantum matter dominated purely by quantum fluctuations. Recently, the three-dimensional LHY fluids were observed in ultracold atoms experiments, while their low-dimensional counterparts have not been well known. Herein, based on the Gross-Pitaevskii equation of one-dimensional LHY quantum fluids in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates, we reveal analytically and numerically the formation, properties, and dynamics of matter-wave structures therein. Considering a harmonic trap, approximate analytical results are obtained based on variational approximation, and higher-order nonlinear localized modes with nonzero nodes are constructed numerically. Stability regions of all the LHY nonlinear localized modes are identified by linear-stability analysis and direct perturbed numerical simulations. Movements and oscillations of single localized mode, and collisions between two modes, under the influence of different initial kicks are also studied in dynamical evolutions. The predicted results are available to quantum-gas experiments, providing a new insight into LHY physics in low-dimensional settings.

Electromagnetically induced moiré optical lattices in a coherent atomic gas

Electromagnetically induced optical (or photonic) lattices via atomic coherence in atomic ensembles have recently received great theoretical and experimental interest. We here conceive a way to generate electromagnetically induced moiré optical lattices -- a twisted periodic pattern when two identical periodic patterns (lattices) are overlapped in a twisted angle ($θ$) -- in a three-level coherent atomic gas working under electromagnetically induced transparency. We show that, changing the twisted angle and relative strength between the two constitutive sublattices, the moiré Bloch bands that are extremely flattened can always appear, resembling the typical flat-band and moiré physics found in other contexts. Dynamics of light propagation in the induced periodic structures demonstrating the unique linear localization and delocalization properties are also revealed. Our scheme can be implemented in a Rubidium atomic medium, where the predicted moiré optical lattices and flattened bands are naturally observable.

Localized modes in nonlinear fractional systems with deep lattices

Solitons in the fractional space, supported by lattice potentials, have recently attracted much interest. We consider the limit of deep one- and two-dimensional (1D and 2D) lattices in this system, featuring finite bandgaps separated by nearly flat Bloch bands. Such spectra are also a subject of great interest in current studies. The existence, shapes, and stability of various localized modes, including fundamental gap and vortex solitons, are investigated by means of numerical methods; some results are also obtained with the help of analytical approximations. In particular, the 1D and 2D gap solitons, belonging to the first and second finite bandgaps, are tightly confined around a single cell of the deep lattice. Vortex gap solitons are constructed as four-peak \textquotedblleft squares" and \textquotedblleft rhombuses" with imprinted winding number $S=1$. Stability of the solitons is explored by means of the linearization and verified by direct simulations.

Self-trapped spatially localized states in combined linear-nonlinear periodic potentials

We analyze the existence and stability of two kinds of self-trapped spatially localized gap modes, gap solitons and truncated nonlinear Bloch waves, in one-and two-dimensional optical or matter-wave media with self-focusing nonlinearity, supported by a combination of linear and nonlinear periodic lattice potentials. The former is found to be stable once placed inside a single well of the nonlinear lattice, it is unstable otherwise. Contrary to the case with constant self-focusing nonlinearity, where the latter solution is always unstable, here, we demonstrate that it nevertheless can be stabilized by the nonlinear lattice since the model under consideration combines the unique properties of both the linear and nonlinear lattices. The practical possibilities for experimental realization of the predicted solutions are also discussed.

One-dimensional gap solitons in quintic and cubic-quintic Fractional nonlinear Schrödinger equations with a periodically modulated linear potential

Competing nonlinearities, such as the cubic (Kerr) and quintic nonlinear terms whose strengths are of opposite signs (the coefficients in front of the nonlinearities), exist in various physical media (in particular, in optical and matter-wave media). A benign competition between self-focusing cubic and self-defocusing quintic nonlinear nonlinearities (known as cubic-quintic model) plays an important role in creating and stabilizing the self-trapping of D-dimensional localized structures, in the contexts of standard nonlinear Schrödinger equation. We incorporate an external periodic potential (linear lattice) into this model and extend it to the space-fractional scenario that begins to surface in very recent years---the nonlinear fractional Schrödinger equation (NLFSE), therefore obtaining the cubic-quintic or the purely quintic NLFSE, and investigate the propagation and stability properties of self-trapped modes therein. Two types of one-dimensional localized gap modes are found, including the fundamental and dipole-mode gap solitons. Employing the techniques based on the linear-stability analysis and direct numerical simulations, we get the stability regions of all the localized modes; and particularly, the anti-Vakhitov-Kolokolov criterion applies for the stable portions of soliton families generated in the frameworks of quintic-only nonlinearity and competing cubic-quintic nonlinear terms.

Asymmetric localized states in periodic potentials with a domain wall-like Kerr nonlinearity

We study the existence of one-dimensional localized states supported by linear periodic potentials and a domain-wall-like Kerr nonlinearity. The model gives rise to several new types of asymmetric localized states, including single- and double-hump soliton profiles, and multihump structures. Exploiting the linear stability analysis and direct simulations, we prove that these localized states are exceptional stable in the respective finite band gaps. The model applies to Bose-Einstein condensates loaded onto optical lattices, and in optics with period potentials, e.g., the photonic crystals and optical waveguide arrays, thereby the predicted solutions can be implemented in the state-of-the-art experiments.

Gap-type dark localized modes in a Bose-Einstein condensate with optical lattices

Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) exhibits a variety of fascinating and unexpected macroscopic phenomena, and has attracted sustained attention in recent years--particularly in the field of solitons and associated nonlinear phenomena. Meanwhile, optical lattices have emerged as a versatile toolbox for understanding the properties and controlling the dynamics of BEC, among which the realization of bright gap solitons is an iconic result. However, the dark gap solitons are still experimentally unproven, and their properties in more than one dimension remain unknown. In light of this, we describe, numerically and theoretically, the formation and stability properties of gap-type dark localized modes in the context of ultracold atoms trapped in optical lattices. Two kinds of stable dark localized modes--gap solitons and soliton clusters--are predicted in both the one- and two-dimensional geometries. The vortical counterparts of both modes are also constructed in two dimensions. A unique feature is the existence of a nonlinear Bloch-wave background on which all above gap modes are situated. By employing linear-stability analysis and direct simulations, stability regions of the predicted modes are obtained. Our results offer the possibility of observing dark gap localized structures with cutting-edge techniques in ultracold atoms experiments and beyond, including in optics with photonic crystals and lattices.

Gaussian-like and flat-top solitons of atoms with spatially modulated repulsive interactions

Solitons, nonlinear particle-like excitations with inalterable properties (amplitude, shape, and velocity) as they propagate, are omnipresent in many branches of science---and in physics in particular. Flat-top solitons are a novel type of bright solitons that have not been well explored in pure nonlinear media. Here, a model of nonlinear Kerr (cubic) media of ultracold atoms with spatially modulated repulsive interactions is proposed and shown to support a vast variety of stable flat-top matter-wave solitons, including one-dimensional (1D) flat-top fundamental and multipole solitons, two-dimensional (2D) flat-top fundamental and vortex solitons. We demonstrate that by varying the relevant physical parameters (nonlinearity coefficient and chemical potential) the ordinary bright (gaussian) solitons can transform into the novel flat-top solitons. The (in-)stability domains of the flat-top soliton families are checked by means of linear stability analysis and reconfirmed by direct numerical simulations. This model is generic in the contexts of nonlinear optics and Bose-Einstein condensates, which provide direct experimental access to observe the predicted solutions.

One-dimensional solitons in fractional Schrödinger equation with a spatially modulated nonlinearity: nonlinear lattice

The existence and stability of stable bright solitons in one-dimensional (1D) media with a spatially periodical modulated Kerr nonlinearity are demonstrated by means of the linear-stability analysis and in direct numerical simulations. The nonlinear potential landscape can balance the fractional-order diffraction and thus stabilizes the solitons, making the model unique and governed by the recently introduced fractional Schrödinger equation with a self-focusing cubic nonlinear lattice. Both 1D fundamental and multihump solitons (in forms of dipole and tripole ones) are found, which occupy one or three cells of the nonlinear lattice respectively, depending on the soliton's power (intensity). We find that the profiles of the predicted soliton families are impacted intensely by the Lévy index $α$ which denotes the level of fractional Laplacian, so does to their stability. The stabilization of soliton families is possible if $α$ exceeds a threshold value, below which the balance between fractional-order diffraction and the spatially modulated focusing nonlinearity will be broken.

A purely Kerr nonlinear model admitting flat-top solitons

We elaborate one- and two-dimensional (1D and 2D) models of media with self-repulsive cubic nonlinearity, whose local strength is subject to spatial modulation that admits the existence of flat-top solitons of various types, including fundamental ones, 1D multipoles, and 2D vortices. Previously, solitons of this type were only produced by models with competing nonlinearities. The present setting may be implemented in optics and Bose-Einstein condensates. The 1D version gives rise to an exact analytical solution for stable flat-top solitons, and generic families may be predicted by means of the Thomas-Fermi approximation. Stability of the obtained flat-top solitons is analyzed by means of linear-stability analysis and direct simulations. Fundamental solitons and 1D multipoles with $k=1$ and $2$ nodes, as well as vortices with winding number $m=1$, are completely stable. For multipoles with $k\geq 3$ and vortices with $m\geq 2$, alternating stripes of stability and instability are identified in their parameter spaces.

Suppression of the critical collapse for one-dimensional solitons by saturable quintic nonlinear lattices

The stabilization of one-dimensional solitons by a nonlinear lattice against the critical collapse in the focusing quintic medium is a challenging issue. We demonstrate that this purpose can be achieved by combining a nonlinearlatticeandsaturationofthequinticnonlinearity. Thesystemsupportsthreespeciesofsolitons, namely, fundamental (even-parity) ones and dipole (odd-parity) modes of on- and off-site-centered types. Very narrow fundamental solitons are found in an approximate analytical form, and systematic results for very broad unstable and moderately broad partly stable solitons, including their existence and stability areas, are produced by means of numerical methods. Stability regions of the solitons are identified by means of systematic simulations. The stability of all the soliton species obeys the Vakhitov-Kolokolov criterion.

Two-dimensional matter-wave solitons and vortices in competing cubic-quintic nonlinear lattices

The nonlinear lattice---a new and nonlinear class of periodic potentials---was recently introduced to generate various nonlinear localized modes. Several attempts failed to stabilize two-dimensional (2D) solitons against their intrinsic critical collapse in Kerr media. Here, we provide a possibility for supporting 2D matter-wave solitons and vortices in an extended setting---the cubic and quintic model---by introducing another nonlinear lattice whose period is controllable and can be different from its cubic counterpart, to its quintic nonlinearity, therefore making a fully `nonlinear quasi-crystal'. A variational approximation based on Gaussian ansatz is developed for the fundamental solitons and in particular, their stability exactly follows the inverted \textit{Vakhitov-Kolokolov} stability criterion, whereas the vortex solitons are only studied by means of numerical methods. Stability regions for two types of localized mode---the fundamental and vortex solitons---are provided. A noteworthy feature of the localized solutions is that the vortex solitons are stable only when the period of the quintic nonlinear lattice is the same as the cubic one or when the quintic nonlinearity is constant, while the stable fundamental solitons can be created under looser conditions. Our physical setting (cubic-quintic model) is in the framework of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE) or nonlinear Schrödinger equation, the predicted localized modes thus may be implemented in Bose-Einstein condensates and nonlinear optical media with tunable cubic and quintic nonlinearities.

Localized dark solitons and vortices in defocusing media with spatially inhomogeneous nonlinearity

Recent studies have demonstrated that defocusing cubic nonlinearity with local strength growing from the center to the periphery faster than $r^{D}$, in space of dimension $D$ with radial coordinate $r$, supports a vast variety of robust bright solitons. In the framework of the same model, but with a weaker spatial-growth rate, $\sim r^{α}$ with $α\leq D$, we here test the possibility to create stable\textit{\ localized continuous waves} (LCWs) in one- and two-dimensional (1D and 2D) geometries, \textit{% localized dark solitons} (LDSs) in 1D, and \textit{localized dark vortices} (LDVs) in 2D, which are all realized as loosely confined states with a divergent norm. Asymptotic tails of the solutions, which determine the divergence of the norm, are constructed in a universal analytical form by means of the Thomas-Fermi approximation (TFA). Global approximations for the LCWs, LDSs, and LDVs are constructed on the basis of interpolations between analytical approximations available far from (TFA) and close to the center. In particular, the interpolations for the 1D LDS, as well as for the 2D LDVs, are based on a \textquotedblleft deformed-tanh" expression, which is suggested by the usual 1D dark-soliton solution. In addition to the 1D fundamental LDSs with the single notch, and 2D vortices with $S=1$, higher-order LDSs with multiple notches are found too, as well as double LDVs, with $S=2$. Stability regions for the modes under the consideration are identified by means of systematic simulations, the LCWs being completely stable in 1D and 2D, as they are ground states in the corresponding settings. Basic evolution scenarios are identified for those vortices which are unstable. The settings considered in this work may be implemented in nonlinear optics and in Bose-Einstein condensates.

Two-dimensional intra-band solitons in lattice potentials with local defects and self-focusing nonlinearity

It is commonly known that stable bright solitons in periodic potentials, which represent gratings in photonics/plasmonics, or optical lattices in quantum gases, exist either in the spectral semi-infinite gap (SIG) or in finite bandgaps. Using numerical methods, we demonstrate that, under the action of the cubic self-focusing nonlinearity, defects in the form of "holes" in two-dimensional (2D) lattices support continuous families of 2D solitons \textit{embedded} into the first two Bloch bands of the respective linear spectrum, where solitons normally do not exist. The two families of the \textit{embedded defect solitons} (EDSs) are found to be continuously linked by the branch of \textit{gap defect solitons} (GDSs) populating the first finite bandgap. Further, the EDS branch traversing the first band links the GDS family with the branch of regular defect-supported solitons populating the SIG. Thus, we construct a continuous chain of regular, embedded, and gap-mode solitons ("superfamily") threading the entire bandgap structure considered here. The EDSs are stable in the first Bloch band, and partly stable in the second. They exist with the norm exceeding a minimum value, hence they do not originate from linear defect modes. Further, we demonstrate that double, triple and quadruple lattice defects support stable dipole-mode solitons and vortices.

Bright solitons in defocusing media with spatial modulation of the quintic nonlinearity

It has been recently demonstrated that self-defocusing (SDF) media with the cubic nonlinearity, whose local coefficient grows from the center to periphery fast enough, support stable bright solitons, without the use of any linear potential. Our objective is to test the genericity of this mechanism for other nonlinearities, by applying it to one- and two-dimensional (1D and 2D) quintic SDF media. The models may be implemented in optics (in particular, in colloidal suspensions of nanoparticles), and the 1D model may be applied to the description of the Tonks-Girardeau gas of ultracold bosons. In 1D, the nonlinearity-modulation function is taken as $% g_{0}+\sinh ^{2}(βx) $. This model admits a subfamily of exact solutions for fundamental solitons. Generic \ soliton solutions are constructed in a numerical form, and also by means of the Thomas-Fermi and variational approximations (TFA and VA). In particular, a new ansatz for the VA is proposed, in the form of "raised $\mathrm{sech}$", which provides for an essentially better accuracy than the usual Gaussian ansatz. The stability of all the fundamental (nodeless) 1D solitons is established through the computation of the corresponding eigenvalues for small perturbations, and also verified by direct simulations. Higher-order 1D solitons with two nodes have a limited stability region, all the modes with more than two nodes being unstable. It is concluded that the recently proposed "anti-VK" stability criterion for fundamental bright solitons in systems with SDF nonlinearities holds here too. Particular exact solutions for 2D solitons are produced as well.

Stabilization of one-dimensional solitons against the critical collapse by quintic nonlinear lattices

It has been recently discovered that stabilization of two-dimensional (2D) solitons against the critical collapse in media with the cubic nonlinearity by means of nonlinear lattices (NLs) is a challenging problem. We address the 1D version of the problem, i.e., the nonlinear-Schrödinger equation (NLSE) with the quintic or cubic-quintic (CQ) terms, the coefficient in front of which is periodically modulated in space. The models may be realized in optics and Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). Stability diagrams for the solitons are produced by means of numerical methods and analytical approximations. It is found that the sinusoidal NL stabilzes solitons supported by the quintic-only nonlinearity in a narrow stripe in the respective parameter plane, on the contrary to the case of the cubic nonlinearity in 2D, where the stabilization of solitons by smooth spatial modulations is not possible at all. The stability region is much broader in the 1D CQ model, where higher-order solitons may be stable too.
