Robust Defense Strategy for Gas-Electric Systems Against Malicious Attacks

This paper proposes a methodology to identify and protect vulnerable components of connected gas and electric infrastructures from malicious attacks, and to guarantee a resilient operation by deploying valid corrective actions (while accounting for the interdependency of gas pipeline network and power transmission network). The proposed mathematical formulation reduces to a tri-level optimization problem, where the lower level is a multiperiod economic dispatch of the gas-electric system, the middle level distinguishes the most threatening attack on the coupled physical infrastructures, and the upper level provides optimal preventive decisions to reinforce the vulnerable components and increase the system resilience. By reformulating the lower level problem as a mixed integer linear programming (MILP), a nested column-and-constraint generation (C\&CG) algorithm is developed to solve the min-max-min model. Case studies on two test systems demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed methodology.

Robust Risk-Constrained Unit Commitment with Large-scale Wind Generation: An Adjustable Uncertainty Set Approach

This paper addresses two vital issues which are barely discussed in the literature on robust unit commitment (RUC): 1) how much the potential operational loss could be if the realization of uncertainty is beyond the prescribed uncertainty set; 2) how large the prescribed uncertainty set should be when it is used for RUC decision making. In this regard, a robust risk-constrained unit commitment (RRUC) formulation is proposed to cope with large-scale volatile and uncertain wind generation. Differing from existing RUC formulations, the wind generation uncertainty set in RRUC is adjustable via choosing diverse levels of operational risk. By optimizing the uncertainty set, RRUC can allocate operational flexibility of power systems over spatial and temporal domains optimally, reducing operational cost in a risk-constrained manner. Moreover, since impact of wind generation realization out of the prescribed uncertainty set on operational risk is taken into account, RRUC outperforms RUC in the case of rare events. Three algorithms based on column and constraint generation (C&CG) are derived to solve the RRUC. As the proposed algorithms are quite general, they can also apply to other RUC models to improve their computational efficiency. Simulations on a modified IEEE 118-bus system demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed methodology

Data-Driven Real-Time Power Dispatch for Maximizing Variable Renewable Generation

Traditional power dispatch methods have difficulties in accommodating large-scale variable renewable generation (VRG) and have resulted in unnecessary VRG spillage in the practical industry. The recent dispatchable-interval-based methods have the potential to reduce VRG curtailment, but the dispatchable intervals are not allocated effectively due to the lack of exploiting historical dispatch records of VRG units. To bridge this gap, this paper proposes a novel data-driven real-time dispatch approach to maximize VRG utili-zation by using do-not-exceed (DNE) limits. This approach defines the maximum generation output ranges that the system can ac-commodate without compromising reliability. The DNE limits of VRG units and operating base points of conventional units are co-optimized by hybrid stochastic and robust optimization, and the decision models are formulated as mixed-integer linear programs by the sample average approximation technique exploiting historical VRG data. A strategy for selecting historical data samples is also proposed to capture the VRG uncertainty more accurately under variant prediction output levels. Computational experiments show the effectiveness of the proposed methods.

Fractional Quantum Hall Effects in HgTe Quantum Wells

We study the possibility of fractional quantum Hall effects in HgTe quantum wells using exact diagonalization. Our results show that Laughlin states, the Moore-Read state, and the Read-Rezayi $Z_3$ state can all be supported. However, near the level crossing point (of the single-particle spectrum), the gap can be destroyed by Landau level mixing, and the Moore-Read state and the Read-Rezayi state dominate over their respective competing states only for wide wells. For smaller well widths the Moore-Read state crosses over to the composite fermion Fermi sea, while the Read-Rezayi state loses its dominance over the hierarchy state.

Wind Power Providing Flexible Ramp Product

The deepening penetration of renewables in power systems has contributed to the increasing needs for generation scheduling flexibility. Specifically, for short-term operations, flexibility here indicates that sufficient ramp capacities should be reserved to respond to the expected changes in the load and intermittent generation, also covering a certain amount of their uncertainty. To address the growing requirements for flexible ramp capacity, markets for ramp products have been launched in practice such as the ones in California ISO and Midcontinent ISO. Some-times, to guarantee sufficient ramp capacity, expensive fast start units have to be committed in real-time. Moreover, with higher penetration of renewable generation, the flexibility provided by the conventional units might not be enough. Actually, wind power producers are physically capable of offering flexibility, which is sometimes also economically efficient to the entire system. In this paper, we aim to explore the mechanism and possibility of including wind power producers as ramp providers to increase the supply of flexibility. To conduct the anal-yses, a two-stage stochastic real-time unit commitment model considering ramp capacity adequacy is formulated. Case studies indicate that both the system and the wind power producers can benefit if the wind power is allowed to provide flexible ramp products.

Robust Integration of High-level Dispatchable Renewables in Power System Operation

The increasing penetration of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) requires more Flexibility Resources (FR), generally thermal units and storages, must be kept in the system to accommodate the uncertainties from RES. The challenge is how the system can survive when the RES level is very high. In this paper, RESs are considered as full-role market participants. They can bid in the day-ahead market, and the powers they deliver to the market are controllable up to their maximum available powers. Therefore, RESs are effectively dispatchable and can function as FR providers. To integrate dispatchable renewables, a two-stage robust Unit Commitment (UC) and dispatch model is established. In the first stage, a base UC and dispatch is determined. In the second stage, all FRs including RESs are used to accommodate the uncertainties, which is a Mixed-Integer Programming (MIP) problem. It is proved that the solution to the max-min problem can be identified directly whether the strong duality holds or not for the inner minimization problem. The solution robustness is guaranteed by including only one extra scenario. Numerical results show the effectiveness of the proposed model and its advantages over the traditional robust UC model with high level RES penetration.

Robust Unit Commitment Considering Strategic Wind Generation Curtailment

Wind generation is traditionally treated as a non-dispatchable resource and is fully absorbed unless there are security issues. To tackle the operational reliability issues caused by the volatile and non-dispatchable wind generation, many dispatch frameworks have been proposed, including robust unit commitment (RUC) considering wind variation. One of the drawbacks that commonly exist in those dispatch frameworks is increased demand on flexibility resources and associated costs. To improve wind dispatchability and reduce flexibility resource costs, in this paper, we propose a novel RUC model considering strategic wind generation curtailment (WGC). Strategic WGC can reduce wind uncertainty and variability and increase the visibility of wind generation capacity. As a result, the ramping requirement for wind generation will be reduced and ramp-up capability of wind generation can be increased, leading to reduced day-ahead operational cost with guaranteed operational reliability requirement of power systems. The economic benefits also include profits gained by wind farm by providing ramping-up capacities other auxiliary services. We also propose a solution algorithm based on the column and constraint generation (C&CG). Simulations on the IEEE 39-bus system and two larger test systems demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed RUC model and efficiency of the proposed computational methodology.

Risk-Based Admissibility Assessment of Wind Generation Integrated into a Bulk Power System

The increasing integration of large-scale volatile and uncertain wind generation has brought great challenges to power system operations. In this paper, a risk-based admissibility assessment approach is proposed to quantitatively evaluate how much wind generation can be accommodated by the bulk power system under a given unit commitment (UC) strategy. Firstly, the operational risk brought by the variation and uncertainty of wind generation is developed as an admissibility measure of wind generation. Then its linear approximation is derived for practical implementation. Furthermore, a risk-minimization model is established to mathematically characterize the admissible region of wind generation. This model can be solved effectively by a modified column and constraint generation (C&CG) algorithm. Simulations on the IEEE 9-bus system and the real Guangdong power grid demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed methodology.

Decentralized Voltage and Power Regulation Control of Excitation and Governor System with Global Asymptotic Stability

The Global Asymptotic Stability (GAS), Voltage Regulation (VR), and Power Regulation (PR) of the excitation and governor control system are of critical importance for power system security. However, simultaneously fulfilling GAS, VR, and PR has not yet been achieved. In order to solve this problem, in this paper, we propose a Lyapunov-based decentralized Control (LBC) for the excitation and governor system of multi-machine power system. A completely controllable linear system is actively constructed to design the time-derivative of the Lyapunov function and GAS is guaranteed by satisfying the condition of GAS in Lyapunov theorem. At the same time, VR and PR are performed by introducing both voltage and power to the feedback. The effectiveness of the proposed method is tested and validated on a six-machine power system.

Dynamic State Estimation under Cyber Attacks: A Comparative Study of Kalman Filters and Observers

Utilizing highly synchronized measurements from synchrophasors, dynamic state estimation (DSE) can be applied for real-time monitoring of smart grids. Concurrent DSE studies for power systems are intolerant to unknown inputs and potential attack vectors --- a research gap we will fill in this work. Particularly, we (a) present an overview of concurrent estimation techniques, highlighting key deficiencies, (b) develop DSE methods based on cubature Kalman filter and dynamic observers, (c) rigorously examine the strengths and weaknesses of the proposed methods under attack-vectors and unknown inputs, and (d) provide comprehensive recommendations for DSE. Numerical results and in-depth remarks are also presented.

A theory-based method is proposed for power systems with wind power to conduct long-term stability analysis, which is able to provide accurate stability assessments with fast simulation speed. Particularly, the theoretical foundation for the proposed approximation approach is presented. The accuracy and efficiency of the method are illustrated by several numerical examples.

Further Discussions on Sufficient Conditions for Exact Relaxation of Complementarity Constraints for Storage-Concerned Economic Dispatch

Storage-concerned economic dispatch (ED) problems with complementarity constraints are strongly non-convex and hard to solve because traditional Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) conditions do not hold in this condition. In our recent paper, we proposed a new exact relaxation method which directly removes the complementarity constraints from the model to make it convex and easier to solve. This paper further extends our previous study, with more than one group of sufficient conditions that guarantee the exact relaxation presented, proven and discussed. This paper may contribute to wider application of the exact relaxation in storage-concerned ED problems.

Coefficient of performance under maximum $χ$ criterion in a two-level atomic system as a refrigerator

A two-level atomic system as a working substance is used to set up a refrigerator consisting of two quantum adiabatic and two isochoric processes (two constant-frequency processes $ω_a$ and $ω_b$ with $ω_a<ω_b$), during which the two-level system is in contact with two heat reservoirs at temperatures $T_h$ and $T_c (<T_h)$. Considering finite-time operation of two isochoric processes, we derive analytical expressions for cooling rate $R$ and coefficient of performance (COP) $\varepsilon$. The COP at maximum $χ(= \varepsilon R)$ figure of merit is numerically determined, and it is proved to be in nice agreement with the so-called Curzon and Ahlborn COP $\varepsilon_{CA}=\sqrt{1+\varepsilon_C}-1$, where $\varepsilon_C=T_c/(T_h-T_c)$ is the Carnot COP. In the high-temperature limit, the COP at maximum $χ$ figure of merit, $\varepsilon^*$, can be expressed analytically by $\varepsilon^* = \varepsilon_+ \equiv (\sqrt{9+8\varepsilon_C}-3)/2$, which was derived previously as the upper bound of optimal COP for the low-dissipation or minimally nonlinear irreversible refrigerators. Within context of irreversible thermodynamics, we prove that the value of $\varepsilon_{+}$ is also the upper bound of COP at maximum $χ$ figure of merit when we regard our model as a linear irreversible refrigerator.

Efficiency at maximum power of a quantum Otto engine: Both within finite-time and irreversible thermodynamics

We consider the efficiency at maximum power of a quantum Otto engine, which uses a spin or a harmonic system as its working substance and works between two heat reservoirs at constant temperatures $T_h$ and $T_c$ $ (<T_h)$. Although the spin-$1/2$ system behaves quite differently from the harmonic system in that they obey two typical quantum statistics, the efficiencies at maximum power based on these two different kinds of quantum systems are bounded from the upper side by the same expression of the efficiency at maximum power: $η_{mp}\leqη_+\equiv η_C^2/[η_C-(1-η_C)\ln(1-η_C)]$, with $η_C=1-T_c/T_h$ the Carnot efficiency, which displays the same universality of the CA efficiency $η_{CA}=1-\sqrt{1-η_C}$ at small relative temperature difference. Within context of irreversible thermodynamics, we calculate the Onsager coefficients and, we show that the value of $η_{CA}$ is indeed the upper bound of EMP for the Otto engines working in the linear-response regime.

Edge reconstruction in the $ν=2/3$ fractional quantum Hall state

The edge structure of the $ν=2/3$ fractional quantum Hall state has been studied for several decades but recent experiments, exhibiting upstream neutral mode(s), a plateau at a Hall conductance of $\frac{1}{3}( e^2/h)$ through a quantum point contact, and a crossover of the effective charge, from $e/3$ at high temperature to $2e/3$ at low temperature, could not be explained by a single theory. Here we develop such a theory, based on edge reconstruction due to a confining potential with finite slope, that admits an additional $ν=1/3$ incompressible strip near the edge. Renormalization group analysis of the effective edge theory due to disorder and interactions explains the experimental observations.

Coefficient of performance for a low-dissipation Carnot-like refrigerator with nonadiabatic dissipation

We study the coefficient of performance (COP) and its bounds of the Canot-like refrigerator working between two heat reservoirs at constant temperatures $T_h$ and $T_c$, under two optimization criteria $χ$ and $Ω$. In view of the fact that an "adiabatic" process takes finite time and is nonisentropic, the nonadiabatic dissipation and the finite time required for the "adiabatic" processes are taken into account. For given optimization criteria, we find that the lower and upper bounds of the COP are the same as the corresponding ones obtained from the previous idealized models where any adiabatic process undergoes instantaneously with constant entropy. When the dissipations of two "isothermal" and two "adiabatic" processes are symmetric, respectively, our theoretical predictions match the observed COP's of real refrigerators more closely than the ones derived in the previous models, providing a strong argument in favor of our approach.

Quantum-mechanical engine models and their efficiencies

Based on quantum thermodynamic processes, we make a quantum-mechanical (QM) extension of the typical heat engine cycles, such as the Carnot, Brayton, Otto, and Diesel cycles, etc. The temperature is not included in these QM engine cycles, as lies in the fact that the concept of energy is well-defined in quantum mechanics, temperature \emph{a priori} is not. These QM engine cycles are implemented by an ideal or interacting system with an arbitrary number of particles confined in an arbitrary power-law trap. As a result, a relation between the quantum adiabatic exponent and trap exponent is found. The efficiency of a given QM engine cycle is similar to that of its classical counterpart, thereby identifying the universality of the efficiency.
