The Neural Networks Based Needle Detection for Medical Retinal Surgery

In recent years, deep learning technology has developed rapidly, and the application of deep neural networks in the medical image processing field has become the focus of the spotlight. This paper aims to achieve needle position detection in medical retinal surgery by adopting the target detection algorithm based on YOLOv5 as the basic deep neural network model. The state-of-the-art needle detection approaches for medical surgery mainly focus on needle structure segmentation. Instead of the needle segmentation, the proposed method in this paper contains the angle examination during the needle detection process. This approach also adopts a novel classification method based on the different positions of the needle to improve the model. The experiments demonstrate that the proposed network can accurately detect the needle position and measure the needle angle. The performance test of the proposed method achieves 4.80 for the average Euclidean distance between the detected tip position and the actual tip position. It also obtains an average error of 0.85 degrees for the tip angle across all test sets.

Cryogen-free one hundred microKelvin refrigerator

Temperature below 100 microKelvin is achieved in a customized cryogen-free dilution refrigerator with a copper-nuclear demagnetization stage. The lowest temperature of conduction electrons of the demagnetization stage is below 100 microKelvin as measured by a pulsed platinum NMR thermometer and the temperature can remain below 100 microKelvin for over 10 hours. An up to 9 T demagnetization magnetic field and an up to 12 T research magnetic field can be controlled independently, provided by a coaxial room-temperature-bore cryogen-free magnet.

A Dual Method For Backward Stochastic Differential Equations with Application to Risk Valuation

We propose a numerical recipe for risk evaluation defined by a backward stochastic differential equation. Using dual representation of the risk measure, we convert the risk valuation to a stochastic control problem where the control is a certain Radon-Nikodym derivative process. By exploring the maximum principle, we show that a piecewise-constant dual control provides a good approximation on a short interval. A dynamic programming algorithm extends the approximation to a finite time horizon. Finally, we illustrate the application of the procedure to financial risk management in conjunction with nested simulation and on an multidimensional portfolio valuation problem.

Music Genre Classification with Paralleling Recurrent Convolutional Neural Network

Deep learning has been demonstrated its effectiveness and efficiency in music genre classification. However, the existing achievements still have several shortcomings which impair the performance of this classification task. In this paper, we propose a hybrid architecture which consists of the paralleling CNN and Bi-RNN blocks. They focus on spatial features and temporal frame orders extraction respectively. Then the two outputs are fused into one powerful representation of musical signals and fed into softmax function for classification. The paralleling network guarantees the extracting features robust enough to represent music. Moreover, the experiments prove our proposed architecture improve the music genre classification performance and the additional Bi-RNN block is a supplement for CNNs.

Discrete-Time Approximation of Risk-Averse Control Problems for Diffusion Processes

We consider optimal control problems for diffusion processes, where the objective functional is defined by a time-consistent dynamic risk measure. We focus on coherent risk measures defined by $g$-evaluations. For such problems, we construct a family of time and space perturbed systems with piecewise-constant control functions. We obtain a regularized optimal value function by a special mollification procedure. This allows us to establish a bound on the difference between the optimal value functions of the original problem and of the problem with piecewise-constant controls.
