Fabrication and characterization of AlMn alloy superconducting films for 0vbb experiments

Neutrinoless double-beta decay (0vbb) experiments constitute a pivotal probe for elucidating the characteristics of neutrinos and further discovering new physics. Compared to the neutron transmutation doped germanium thermistors (NTD-Ge) used in 0vbb experiments such as CUORE, transition edge sensors (TES) theoretically have a relatively faster response time and higher energy resolution. These make TES detectors good choice for next generation 0vbb experiments. In this paper, AlMn alloy superconducting films, the main components of TES, were prepared and studied. The relationship between critical temperature (Tc) and annealing temperature was established, and the impact of magnetic field on Tc was tested. The experimental results demonstrate that the Tc of AlMn film can be tuned in the required range of 10 - 20 mK by using the above methods, which is a key step for the application of AlMn TES in 0vbb experiment. In the test range, the Tc of AlMn film is sensitive to out-of-plane magnetic field but not to the in-plane magnetic field. Furthermore, we find that a higher annealing temperature results in a more uniform distribution of Mn ions in depth, which opens a new avenue for elucidating the underlying mechanism for tuning Tc.

A Stress Induced Source of Phonon Bursts and Quasiparticle Poisoning

The performance of superconducting qubits is degraded by a poorly characterized set of energy sources breaking the Cooper pairs responsible for superconductivity, creating a condition often called ``quasiparticle poisoning". Both superconducting qubits and low threshold dark matter calorimeters have observed excess bursts of quasiparticles or phonons that decrease in rate with time. Here, we show that a silicon crystal glued to its holder exhibits a rate of low-energy phonon events that is more than two orders of magnitude larger than in a functionally identical crystal suspended from its holder in a low-stress state. The excess phonon event rate in the glued crystal decreases with time since cooldown, consistent with a source of phonon bursts which contributes to quasiparticle poisoning in quantum circuits and the low-energy events observed in cryogenic calorimeters. We argue that relaxation of thermally induced stress between the glue and crystal is the source of these events.

Deep3DPose: Realtime Reconstruction of Arbitrarily Posed Human Bodies from Single RGB Images

We introduce an approach that accurately reconstructs 3D human poses and detailed 3D full-body geometric models from single images in realtime. The key idea of our approach is a novel end-to-end multi-task deep learning framework that uses single images to predict five outputs simultaneously: foreground segmentation mask, 2D joints positions, semantic body partitions, 3D part orientations and uv coordinates (uv map). The multi-task network architecture not only generates more visual cues for reconstruction, but also makes each individual prediction more accurate. The CNN regressor is further combined with an optimization based algorithm for accurate kinematic pose reconstruction and full-body shape modeling. We show that the realtime reconstruction reaches accurate fitting that has not been seen before, especially for wild images. We demonstrate the results of our realtime 3D pose and human body reconstruction system on various challenging in-the-wild videos. We show the system advances the frontier of 3D human body and pose reconstruction from single images by quantitative evaluations and comparisons with state-of-the-art methods.

Observation of an antiferromagnetic quantum critical point in high-purity LaNiO$_3$

Amongst the rare-earth perovskite nickelates, LaNiO$_3$ (LNO) is an exception. While the former have insulating and antiferromagnetic ground states, LNO remains metallic and non-magnetic down to the lowest temperatures. It is believed that LNO is a strange metal, on the verge of an antiferromagnetic instability. Our work suggests that LNO is a quantum critical metal, close to an antiferromagnetic quantum critical point (QCP). The QCP behavior in LNO is manifested in epitaxial thin films with unprecedented high purities. We find that the temperature and magnetic field dependences of the resistivity of LNO at low temperatures are consistent with scatterings of charge carriers from weak disorder and quantum fluctuations of an antiferromagnetic nature. Furthermore, we find that the introduction of a small concentration of magnetic impurities qualitatively changes the magnetotransport properties of LNO, resembling that found in some heavy-fermion Kondo lattice systems in the vicinity of an antiferromagnetic QCP.

Superconductivity in the dilute single band limit in reduced Strontium Titanate

We report on superconductivity in single crystals of SrTiO$_{3-δ}$ with carrier densities $\textit{n} < 1.4 \times10^{18}cm^{-3}$, where only a single band is occupied. For all samples in this regime, the resistive transition occurs at $T_{c} \approx 65 \pm 25 \ mK$. We observe a zero resistance state for $\textit{n}$ as low as $1.03 \times10^{17}cm^{-3}$, and a partial resistive transition for $\textit{n} = 3.85 \times10^{16}cm^{-3}$. We observe low critical current densities, relatively high and isotropic upper critical fields, and an absence of diamagnetic screening in these samples. Our findings suggest an inhomogeneous superconducting state, embedded within a homogeneous high-mobility 3-dimensional electron gas. $T_{c}$ does not vary appreciably when $\textit{n}$ changes by more than an order of magnitude, inconsistent with conventional superconductivity.
