Semi-Tensor Product-Based Multi-Term Randomized T-SVD and Its Visual Applications

Tensor singular value decomposition (T-SVD), which is built upon the tensor-tensor product (t-product), has emerged as a powerful tool for processing high-dimensional visual data such as color images and videos. However, the standard t-product imposes strict dimensional compatibility constraints. Although extensions based on the semi-tensor product (STP) relax this restriction, their single-term formulations still suffer from limited approximation accuracy. Moreover, these deterministic methods incur high computational costs when processing large-scale tensor data. To address these issues, this paper introduces a novel semi-tensor product for third-order tensors under the t-product framework induced by arbitrary invertible linear transforms. The resulting tensor semi-tensor product breaks the rigid dimension matching requirement of the standard t-product, while retaining the closed-form property of T-SVD. Based on this construction, we develop a multi-term semi-tensor product singular value decomposition (MSTP-SVD), which integrates multiple orthogonal decomposition terms to significantly improve low-rank approximation accuracy compared with single-term schemes. To reduce the computational cost of multi-term modeling, we incorporate randomized projection and power iteration techniques into the MSTP-SVD framework, yielding an accelerated multi-term randomized semi-tensor product SVD (MRSTP-SVD) algorithm that achieves a balance between reconstruction accuracy and computational efficiency. Experiments on image and video compression and completion tasks demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Cross-Architecture Knowledge Distillation from a Vision Foundation Model to a Lightweight Visual State Space Model for Tea Leaf Disease Classification

Automated tea leaf disease classification supports precision agriculture, yet deploying accurate models on edge devices remains challenging under tight compute budgets. Self-supervised vision foundation models such as DINOv2 provide strong features but are too large for field deployment, while lightweight models trained from scratch on small agricultural datasets often underfit. We study cross-architecture knowledge distillation (KD) from a fine-tuned DINOv2 teacher (Vision Transformer) to a compact bidirectional Visual State Space Model (LVSSM) student, an underexplored direction because the architectures use fundamentally different token-mixing mechanisms. We identify and fix two training-stability problems that prevent the from-scratch SSM student from learning on limited data: a single large patch-embedding convolution and a fusion layer that severs the residual path. With a progressive convolutional stem and gated bidirectional selective-scan block, the 4.45M-parameter student trains stably. Across three seeds, temperature-scaled logit distillation raises test accuracy from 92.32+/-2.14% to 95.41+/-1.17% (best single run: 96.20%; macro-F1: 94.45%), a +3.09 percentage-point mean gain. The student uses 5.0 times fewer parameters than the 22M-parameter teacher while retaining 98.3% of its accuracy. Ablations show that intermediate feature-alignment losses reduce accuracy, making simple logit-level KD the strongest configuration. A fair from-scratch comparison shows the gain is specific to students that start below the teacher. We report per-class metrics, confusion matrices, bootstrap confidence intervals, and FLOPs/latency measurements, and discuss limitations including the single-dataset scope and simplified non-official SSM implementation.

Low-Rank Tensor Completion Based on Fractional Regularization with Ky Fan p-k Norm

This paper addresses low-rank tensor completion (LRTC) by proposing a novel nonconvex surrogate, namely the ratio of the tensor nuclear norm to the tensor Ky Fan p-k norm (TNPK), to accurately approximate the tensor tubal rank. The TNPK possesses appealing properties, including scale invariance, parameter flexibility, and the existence of closed-form solutions under specific choices of p and k. With specific parameter settings of p and k, it reduces to the ratio of the tensor nuclear norm to the tensor Ky Fan k norm (TNK) or the ratio of the tensor nuclear norm to the tensor Frobenius norm (TNF). We construct a LRTC model and, under the tensor null space property (NSP), prove that low-rank tensors are local minimizers of the proposed model. Moreover, we derive the proximal operator of the Ky Fan p-k inverse-norm and further develop an efficient alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) algorithm with guaranteed subsequential convergence under mild conditions. Extensive experiments on synthetic and real-world datasets validate the superior performance of our method against state-of-the-art competitors.

Disentangled Point Diffusion for Precise Object Placement

Recent advances in robotic manipulation have highlighted the effectiveness of learning from demonstration. However, while end-to-end policies excel in expressivity and flexibility, they struggle both in generalizing to novel object geometries and in attaining a high degree of precision. An alternative, object-centric approach frames the task as predicting the placement pose of the target object, providing a modular decomposition of the problem. Building on this goal-prediction paradigm, we propose TAX-DPD, a hierarchical, disentangled point diffusion framework that achieves state-of-the-art performance in placement precision, multi-modal coverage, and generalization to variations in object geometries and scene configurations. We model global scene-level placements through a novel feed-forward Dense Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) that yields a spatially dense prior over global placements; we then model the local object-level configuration through a novel disentangled point cloud diffusion module that separately diffuses the object geometry and the placement frame, enabling precise local geometric reasoning. Interestingly, we demonstrate that our point cloud diffusion achieves substantially higher accuracy than a prior approach based on SE(3)-diffusion, even in the context of rigid object placement. We validate our approach across a suite of challenging tasks in simulation and in the real-world on high-precision industrial insertion tasks. Furthermore, we present results on a cloth-hanging task in simulation, indicating that our framework can further relax assumptions on object rigidity.

Temporally Decoupled Diffusion Planning for Autonomous Driving

Motion planning in dynamic urban environments requires balancing immediate safety with long-term goals. While diffusion models effectively capture multi-modal decision-making, existing approaches treat trajectories as monolithic entities, overlooking heterogeneous temporal dependencies where near-term plans are constrained by instantaneous dynamics and far-term plans by navigational goals. To address this, we propose Temporally Decoupled Diffusion Model (TDDM), which reformulates trajectory generation via a noise-as-mask paradigm. By partitioning trajectories into segments with independent noise levels, we implicitly treat high noise as information voids and weak noise as contextual cues. This compels the model to reconstruct corrupted near-term states by leveraging internal correlations with better-preserved temporal contexts. Architecturally, we introduce a Temporally Decoupled Adaptive Layer Normalization (TD-AdaLN) to inject segment-specific timesteps. During inference, our Asymmetric Temporal Classifier-Free Guidance utilizes weakly noised far-term priors to guide immediate path generation. Evaluations on the nuPlan benchmark show TDDM approaches or exceeds state-of-the-art baselines, particularly excelling in the challenging Test14-hard subset.

Multi-Dimensional Visual Data Recovery: Scale-Aware Tensor Modeling and Accelerated Randomized Computation

The recently proposed fully-connected tensor network (FCTN) decomposition has demonstrated significant advantages in correlation characterization and transpositional invariance, and has achieved notable achievements in multi-dimensional data processing and analysis. However, existing multi-dimensional data recovery methods leveraging FCTN decomposition still have room for further enhancement, particularly in computational efficiency and modeling capability. To address these issues, we first propose a FCTN-based generalized nonconvex regularization paradigm from the perspective of gradient mapping. Then, reliable and scalable multi-dimensional data recovery models are investigated, where the model formulation is shifted from unquantized observations to coarse-grained quantized observations. Based on the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) framework, we derive efficient optimization algorithms with convergence guarantees to solve the formulated models. To alleviate the computational bottleneck encountered when processing large-scale multi-dimensional data, fast and efficient randomized compression algorithms are devised in virtue of sketching techniques in numerical linear algebra. These dimensionality-reduction techniques serve as the computational acceleration core of our proposed algorithm framework. Theoretical results on approximation error upper bounds and convergence analysis for the proposed method are derived. Extensive numerical experiments illustrate the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed algorithm over other state-of-the-art methods in terms of quantitative metrics, visual quality, and running time.

STA-Net: A Decoupled Shape and Texture Attention Network for Lightweight Plant Disease Classification

Responding to rising global food security needs, precision agriculture and deep learning-based plant disease diagnosis have become crucial. Yet, deploying high-precision models on edge devices is challenging. Most lightweight networks use attention mechanisms designed for generic object recognition, which poorly capture subtle pathological features like irregular lesion shapes and complex textures. To overcome this, we propose a twofold solution: first, using a training-free neural architecture search method (DeepMAD) to create an efficient network backbone for edge devices; second, introducing the Shape-Texture Attention Module (STAM). STAM splits attention into two branches -- one using deformable convolutions (DCNv4) for shape awareness and the other using a Gabor filter bank for texture awareness. On the public CCMT plant disease dataset, our STA-Net model (with 401K parameters and 51.1M FLOPs) reached 89.00% accuracy and an F1 score of 88.96%. Ablation studies confirm STAM significantly improves performance over baseline and standard attention models. Integrating domain knowledge via decoupled attention thus presents a promising path for edge-deployed precision agriculture AI. The source code is available at https://github.com/RzMY/STA-Net.

ViPSN 2.0: A Reconfigurable Battery-free IoT Platform for Vibration Energy Harvesting

Vibration energy harvesting is a promising solution for powering battery-free IoT systems; however, the instability of ambient vibrations presents significant challenges, such as limited harvested energy, intermittent power supply, and poor adaptability to various applications. To address these challenges, this paper proposes ViPSN2.0, a modular and reconfigurable IoT platform that supports multiple vibration energy harvesters (piezoelectric, electromagnetic, and triboelectric) and accommodates sensing tasks with varying application requirements through standardized hot-swappable interfaces. ViPSN~2.0 incorporates an energy-indication power management framework tailored to various application demands, including light-duty discrete sampling, heavy-duty high-power sensing, and complex-duty streaming tasks, thereby effectively managing fluctuating energy availability. The platform's versatility and robustness are validated through three representative applications: ViPSN-Beacon, enabling ultra-low-power wireless beacon transmission from a single transient fingertip press; ViPSN-LoRa, supporting high-power, long-range wireless communication powered by wave vibrations in actual marine environments; and ViPSN-Cam, enabling intermittent image capture and wireless transfer. Experimental results demonstrate that ViPSN~2.0 can reliably meet a wide range of requirements in practical battery-free IoT deployments under energy-constrained conditions.

Accelerating Large-Scale Regularized High-Order Tensor Recovery

Currently, existing tensor recovery methods fail to recognize the impact of tensor scale variations on their structural characteristics. Furthermore, existing studies face prohibitive computational costs when dealing with large-scale high-order tensor data. To alleviate these issue, assisted by the Krylov subspace iteration, block Lanczos bidiagonalization process, and random projection strategies, this article first devises two fast and accurate randomized algorithms for low-rank tensor approximation (LRTA) problem. Theoretical bounds on the accuracy of the approximation error estimate are established. Next, we develop a novel generalized nonconvex modeling framework tailored to large-scale tensor recovery, in which a new regularization paradigm is exploited to achieve insightful prior representation for large-scale tensors. On the basis of the above, we further investigate new unified nonconvex models and efficient optimization algorithms, respectively, for several typical high-order tensor recovery tasks in unquantized and quantized situations. To render the proposed algorithms practical and efficient for large-scale tensor data, the proposed randomized LRTA schemes are integrated into their central and time-intensive computations. Finally, we conduct extensive experiments on various large-scale tensors, whose results demonstrate the practicability, effectiveness and superiority of the proposed method in comparison with some state-of-the-art approaches.

Hyperspectral Anomaly Detection Fused Unified Nonconvex Tensor Ring Factors Regularization

In recent years, tensor decomposition-based approaches for hyperspectral anomaly detection (HAD) have gained significant attention in the field of remote sensing. However, existing methods often fail to fully leverage both the global correlations and local smoothness of the background components in hyperspectral images (HSIs), which exist in both the spectral and spatial domains. This limitation results in suboptimal detection performance. To mitigate this critical issue, we put forward a novel HAD method named HAD-EUNTRFR, which incorporates an enhanced unified nonconvex tensor ring (TR) factors regularization. In the HAD-EUNTRFR framework, the raw HSIs are first decomposed into background and anomaly components. The TR decomposition is then employed to capture the spatial-spectral correlations within the background component. Additionally, we introduce a unified and efficient nonconvex regularizer, induced by tensor singular value decomposition (TSVD), to simultaneously encode the low-rankness and sparsity of the 3-D gradient TR factors into a unique concise form. The above characterization scheme enables the interpretable gradient TR factors to inherit the low-rankness and smoothness of the original background. To further enhance anomaly detection, we design a generalized nonconvex regularization term to exploit the group sparsity of the anomaly component. To solve the resulting doubly nonconvex model, we develop a highly efficient optimization algorithm based on the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) framework. Experimental results on several benchmark datasets demonstrate that our proposed method outperforms existing state-of-the-art (SOTA) approaches in terms of detection accuracy.

Theory and Fast Learned Solver for $\ell^1$-TV Regularization

The $\ell^1$ and total variation (TV) penalties have been used successfully in many areas, and the combination of the $\ell^1$ and TV penalties can lead to further improved performance. In this work, we investigate the mathematical theory and numerical algorithms for the $\ell^1$-TV model in the context of signal recovery: we derive the sample complexity of the $\ell^1$-TV model for recovering signals with sparsity and gradient sparsity. Also we propose a novel algorithm (PGM-ISTA) for the regularized $\ell^1$-TV problem, and establish its global convergence and parameter selection criteria. Furthermore, we construct a fast learned solver (LPGM-ISTA) by unrolling PGM-ISTA. The results for the experiment on ECG signals show the superior performance of LPGM-ISTA in terms of recovery accuracy and computational efficiency.

A High Precision Time Measurement Method Based on Frequency-domain Phase-Fitting for Nuclear Pulse Detection

This paper proposes a high-precision time measurement method based on digital frequency-domain phase-fitting (DFPF) by using the digitized nuclear pulses. The averaging effect inherent in the frequency-domain cross-correlation and phase-fitting processes effectively minimizes measurement errors, thereby ensuring high precision and resolution in time interval measurements. In this paper, the theory of this DFPF-based time measurement method is analyzed, and an electronics prototype is designed to validate the feasibility of the proposed method by utilizing ADCs for pulse digitization and an FPGA for phase fitting implementation. The test results indicate that, under ideal conditions with a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 64 dB, this method achieves time measurement precisions of 50 ps, 18 ps, and 2.9 ps RMS, corresponding to different Gaussian pulse widths and sampling rates of 118 ns at 40 MSPS, 10 ns at 100 MSPS, and 3 ns at 500 MSPS, respectively. The precision improves with increasing pulse bandwidth. Furthermore, in practical cosmic ray tests, the method achieved favorable timing performance with a precision of 1.7 ns RMS. These results demonstrate that this proposed method has the potential to be a high-precision time measurement for particle detection and is equally applicable to other advanced time measurement scenarios.

Minimum observability of probabilistic Boolean networks

This paper studies the minimum observability of probabilistic Boolean networks (PBNs), the main objective of which is to add the fewest measurements to make an unobservable PBN become observable. First of all, the algebraic form of a PBN is established with the help of semi-tensor product (STP) of matrices. By combining the algebraic forms of two identical PBNs into a parallel system, a method to search the states that need to be H-distinguishable is proposed based on the robust set reachability technique. Secondly, a necessary and sufficient condition is given to find the minimum measurements such that a given set can be H-distinguishable. Moreover, by comparing the numbers of measurements for all the feasible H-distinguishable state sets, the least measurements that make the system observable are gained. Finally, an example is given to verify the validity of the obtained results.

The block mutual coherence property condition for signal recovery

Compressed sensing shows that a sparse signal can stably be recovered from incomplete linear measurements. But, in practical applications, some signals have additional structure, where the nonzero elements arise in some blocks. We call such signals as block-sparse signals. In this paper, the $\ell_2/\ell_1-α\ell_2$ minimization method for the stable recovery of block-sparse signals is investigated. Sufficient conditions based on block mutual coherence property and associating upper bound estimations of error are established to ensure that block-sparse signals can be stably recovered in the presence of noise via the $\ell_2/\ell_1-α\ell_2$ minimization method. For all we know, it is the first block mutual coherence property condition of stably reconstructing block-sparse signals by the $\ell_2/\ell_1-α\ell_2$ minimization method. Additionally, the numerical experiments implemented verify the performance of the $\ell_2/\ell_1-α\ell_2$ minimization.

Nonconvex Robust High-Order Tensor Completion Using Randomized Low-Rank Approximation

Within the tensor singular value decomposition (T-SVD) framework, existing robust low-rank tensor completion approaches have made great achievements in various areas of science and engineering. Nevertheless, these methods involve the T-SVD based low-rank approximation, which suffers from high computational costs when dealing with large-scale tensor data. Moreover, most of them are only applicable to third-order tensors. Against these issues, in this article, two efficient low-rank tensor approximation approaches fusing randomized techniques are first devised under the order-d (d >= 3) T-SVD framework. On this basis, we then further investigate the robust high-order tensor completion (RHTC) problem, in which a double nonconvex model along with its corresponding fast optimization algorithms with convergence guarantees are developed. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to incorporate the randomized low-rank approximation into the RHTC problem. Empirical studies on large-scale synthetic and real tensor data illustrate that the proposed method outperforms other state-of-the-art approaches in terms of both computational efficiency and estimated precision.

Ballistic Ejection of Microdroplets from Overpacked Interfacial Assemblies

Spontaneous emulsification, resulting from the assembly and accumulation of surfactants at liquid-liquid interfaces, is an interfacial instability where microdroplets are generated and diffusively spread from the interface until complete emulsification. Here, we show that an external magnetic field can modulate the assembly of paramagnetic nanoparticle surfactants (NPSs) at liquid-liquid interfaces and trigger an oversaturation in the areal density of the NPSs at the interface, as evidenced by a marked reduction in the interfacial tension, γ, and corroborated with a magnetostatic continuum theory. Despite the significant reduction in γ, the presence of the magnetic field does not cause stable interfaces to become unstable. Upon rapid removal of the field, however, an explosive ejection of a plume of microdroplets from the surface occurs, a dynamical interfacial instability which is termed explosive emulsification. This explosive event rapidly reduces the areal density of the NPSs to its pre-field level, stabilizing the interface. The ability to externally suppress or trigger the explosive emulsification and controlled generation of tens of thousands of microdroplets, uncovers an efficient energy storage and release process, that has potential applications for controlled and directed delivery of chemicals and remotely controlled soft microrobots, taking advantage of the ferromagnetic nature of the microdroplets.

Guaranteed Tensor Recovery Fused Low-rankness and Smoothness

The tensor data recovery task has thus attracted much research attention in recent years. Solving such an ill-posed problem generally requires to explore intrinsic prior structures underlying tensor data, and formulate them as certain forms of regularization terms for guiding a sound estimate of the restored tensor. Recent research have made significant progress by adopting two insightful tensor priors, i.e., global low-rankness (L) and local smoothness (S) across different tensor modes, which are always encoded as a sum of two separate regularization terms into the recovery models. However, unlike the primary theoretical developments on low-rank tensor recovery, these joint L+S models have no theoretical exact-recovery guarantees yet, making the methods lack reliability in real practice. To this crucial issue, in this work, we build a unique regularization term, which essentially encodes both L and S priors of a tensor simultaneously. Especially, by equipping this single regularizer into the recovery models, we can rigorously prove the exact recovery guarantees for two typical tensor recovery tasks, i.e., tensor completion (TC) and tensor robust principal component analysis (TRPCA). To the best of our knowledge, this should be the first exact-recovery results among all related L+S methods for tensor recovery. Significant recovery accuracy improvements over many other SOTA methods in several TC and TRPCA tasks with various kinds of visual tensor data are observed in extensive experiments. Typically, our method achieves a workable performance when the missing rate is extremely large, e.g., 99.5%, for the color image inpainting task, while all its peers totally fail in such challenging case.

Exact Decomposition of Joint Low Rankness and Local Smoothness Plus Sparse Matrices

It is known that the decomposition in low-rank and sparse matrices (\textbf{L+S} for short) can be achieved by several Robust PCA techniques. Besides the low rankness, the local smoothness (\textbf{LSS}) is a vitally essential prior for many real-world matrix data such as hyperspectral images and surveillance videos, which makes such matrices have low-rankness and local smoothness properties at the same time. This poses an interesting question: Can we make a matrix decomposition in terms of \textbf{L\&LSS +S } form exactly? To address this issue, we propose in this paper a new RPCA model based on three-dimensional correlated total variation regularization (3DCTV-RPCA for short) by fully exploiting and encoding the prior expression underlying such joint low-rank and local smoothness matrices. Specifically, using a modification of Golfing scheme, we prove that under some mild assumptions, the proposed 3DCTV-RPCA model can decompose both components exactly, which should be the first theoretical guarantee among all such related methods combining low rankness and local smoothness. In addition, by utilizing Fast Fourier Transform (FFT), we propose an efficient ADMM algorithm with a solid convergence guarantee for solving the resulting optimization problem. Finally, a series of experiments on both simulations and real applications are carried out to demonstrate the general validity of the proposed 3DCTV-RPCA model.
