Existence and multiplicity of sign-changing standing waves for a gauged nonlinear Schrödinger equation in $\R^2$

We are concerned with sign-changing solutions of the following gauged nonlinear Schrödinger equation in dimension two including the so-called Chern-Simons term \begin{align*} \left\{ \begin{array}{ll} -\triangle {u}+ωu+\left(\frac{h^2(|x|)}{|x|^2}+\int_{|x|}^{+\infty}\frac{h(s)}{s}u^2(s){\rm ds}\right) u =λ|u|^{p-2}u& \mbox{in}\,\,\R^2, u(x)=u(|x|)\, \in\, H^1(\R^2), \end{array} \right. \end{align*} where $ω,λ>0$, $p\in(4,6)$ and $$ h(s)=\frac{1}{2}\int_0^sτu^2(τ)dτ. $$ Via a novel perturbation approach and the method of invariant sets of descending flow, we investigate the existence and multiplicity of sign-changing solutions. Moreover, {\it energy doubling} is established, i.e., the energy of sign-changing solution $w_λ$ is strictly larger than twice that of the ground state energy for $λ>0$ large. Finally, for any sequence $λ_n\rightarrow\infty$ as $n\rightarrow\infty$, up to a subsequence, $λ_n^{\frac{1}{p-2}}w_{λ_n}\rg w$ strongly in $H_{rad}^1(\R^2)$ as $n\rightarrow\infty$, where $w$ is a sign-changing solution of $$ -\triangle {u}+ωu=|u|^{p-2}u,\,\,u\in H_{rad}^1(\R^2). $$

Modulational stability of ground states to nonlinear Kirchhoff equations

We investigate the stability of ground states to a nonlinear focusing Schrödinger equation in presence of a Kirchhoff term. Through a spectral analysis of the linearized operator about ground states, we show a modulation stability estimate of ground states in the spirit of one due to Weinstein [{\it SIAM J. Math. Anal.}, 16(1985),472-491].

Bose fluids and positive solutions to weakly coupled systems with critical growth in dimension two

We prove, using variational methods, the existence in dimension two of positive vector ground states solutions for the Bose-Einstein type systems \begin{equation} \begin{cases} -Δu+λ_1u=μ_1u(e^{u^2}-1)+βv\left(e^{uv}-1\right) \text{ in } Ω, &\\ -Δv+λ_2v=μ_2v(e^{v^2}-1)+βu\left(e^{uv}-1\right)\text{ in } Ω, &\\ u,v\in H^1_0(Ω) \end{cases} \end{equation} where $Ω$ is a bounded smooth domain, $λ_1,λ_2>-Λ_1$ (the first eigenvalue of $(-Δ,H^1_0(Ω))$, $μ_1,μ_2>0$ and $β$ is either positive (small or large) or negative (small). The nonlinear interaction between two Bose fluids is assumed to be of critical exponential type in the sense of J. Moser. For `small' solutions the system is asymptotically equivalent to the corresponding one in higher dimensions with power-like nonlinearities.

Enhanced optical Kerr nonlinearity of graphene/Si hybrid waveguide

In this work, we experimentally study the optical kerr nonlinearities of graphene/Si hybrid waveguides with enhanced self-phase modulation. In the case of CMOS compatible materials for nonlinear optical signal processing, Si and silicon nitride waveguides have been extensively investigated over the past decade. However, Si waveguides exhibit strong two-photon absorption (TPA) at telecommunication wavelengths, which lead to a significant reduction of nonlinear figure of merit. In contrast, silicon nitride based material system usually suppress the TPA, but simultaneously leads to the reduction of the Kerr nonlinearity by two orders of magnitude. Here, we introduce a graphene/Si hybrid waveguide, which remain the optical properties and CMOS compatibility of Si waveguides, while enhance the Kerr nonlinearity by transferring patterned graphene over the top of the waveguides. The graphene/Si waveguides are measured with a nonlinear parameter of 510 W-1m-1. Enhanced nonlinear figure-of-merit (FOM) of 2.48 has been achieved, which is three times higher than that of the Si waveguide. This work reveals the potential application of graphene/Si hybrid photonic waveguides with high Kerr nonlinearity and FOM for nonlinear all-optical signal processing.

Groundstates for Choquard type equations with Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev lower critical exponent

For the Choquard equation, which is a nonlocal nonlinear Schrödinger type equation, $ -Δu+V_{μ,ν} u=(I_α\ast |u|^{\frac{N+α}{N}}){|u|}^{\fracα{N}-1}u$, in $\mathbb{R}^N$ where $N\ge 3$, $V_{μ, ν} : \mathbb{R}^N \to \mathbb{R}$ is an external potential defined for $μ,ν\in\mathbb{R}$ and $x \in \mathbb{R}^N$ by $V_{μ, ν} (x)=1-μ/(ν^2 + |x|^2)$ and $I_α: \mathbb{R}^N \to 0$ is the Riesz potential for $α\in (0,N)$, we exhibit two thresholds $μ_ν,μ^ν>0$ such that the equation admits a positive ground state solution if and only if $μ_ν<μ<μ^ν$ and no ground state solution exists for $μ<μ_ν$. Moreover, if $μ>\max\left\{μ^ν,\frac{N^2(N-2)}{4(N+1)}\right\}$, then equation still admits a sign changing ground state solution provided $N\ge4$ or in dimension $N=3$ if in addition $\frac{3}{2}<α<3$ and ker$(-Δ+ V_{μ, ν}) = \{0\}$, namely in the non-resonant case.

Existence and concentration of positive solutions for nonlinear Kirchhoff type problems with a general critical nonlinearity

We are concerned with the following Kirchhoff type equation $$-\varepsilon^2 M \left(\varepsilon^{2-N} \int_{\mathbb{R}^N} | \nabla u|^2\, \mathrm{d} x\right) Δu+V(x)u = f(u),\ x \in \mathbb{R}^N,\ \ N\ge2, $$ where $M \in C(\mathbb{R}^+,\mathbb{R}^+)$, $V\in C(\mathbb{R}^N,\mathbb{R}^+)$ and $f(s)$ is of critical growth. In this paper, we construct a localized bound state solution concentrating at a local minimum of $V$ as $\varepsilon\to 0$ under certain conditions on $f(s)$, $M$ and $V$. In particular, the monotonicity of $f(s)/s$ and the Ambrosetti-Rabinowitz condition are not required.

Singularly perturbed fractional Schrödinger equation involving a general critical nonlinearity

In this paper, we are concerned with the existence and concentration phenomena of solutions for the following singularly perturbed fractional Schrödinger problem \begin{align*} \varepsilon^{2s}(-Δ)^su+V(x)u=f(u) \ \ \ \mbox{in} \ \ \ \mathbb{R}^N, \end{align*} where $N>2s$ and the nonlinearity $f$ has critical growth. By using the variational approach, we construct a localized bound-state solution concentrating around an isolated component of the positive minimum point of $V$ as $\varepsilon\rightarrow 0$. Our result improves the study made in X. He and W. Zou ({\it Calc. Var. Partial Differential Equations}. 55-91(2016)), in the sense that, in the present paper, the {\it Ambrosetti-Rabinowitz} condition and {\it monotonicity} condition on $f(t)/t$ are not required.

Ground states for fractional Kirchhoff equations with critical nonlinearity in low dimension

We study the existence of ground states to a nonlinear fractional Kirchhoff equation with an external potential $V$. Under suitable assumptions on $V$, using the monotonicity trick and the profile decomposition, we prove the existence of ground states. In particular, the nonlinearity does not satisfy the Ambrosetti-Rabinowitz type condition or monotonicity assumptions.

Ground states and semiclassical states of nonlinear Choquard equations involving Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev critical growth

We are concerned with the existence of ground states for nonlinear Choquard equations involving a critical nonlinearity in the sense of Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev. Our result complements previous results by Moroz and Van Schaftingen where the subcritical case was considered. Then, we focus on the existence of semi-classical states and by using a truncation argument approach, we establish the existence and concentration of single peak solutions concentrating around minima of the Schrödinger potential, as the Planck constant goes to zero. The result is robust in the sense that the nonlinearity is not required to satisfy monotonicity conditions nor the Ambrosetti-Rabinowitz condition.

A priori estimates and positivity for semiclassical ground states for systems of critical Schroedinger equations in dimension two

We consider in the whole plane the Hamiltonian coupling of semilinear Schroedinger equations which have critical growth in the sense of Moser. We prove that the (nonempty) set S of ground state solutions is compact up to translations. Moreover, ground states are uniformly bounded and uniformly decaying at infinity. Then we prove that actually the ground state is positive and radially symmetric. We apply those results to prove the existence of semiclassical ground states solutions to the singularly perturbed system when the external potential stays bounded away from zero. Namely, as the adimensionalized Planck constant vanishes, we prove the existence of minimal energy solutions which concentrate around the closest local minima of the potential with some precise asymptotic rate.

Multi-peak solutions for nonlinear Choquard equation with a general nonlinearity

In this paper, we study a class of nonlinear Choquard type equations involving a general nonlinearity. By using the method of penalization argument, we show that there exists a family of solutions having multiple concentration regions which concentrate at the minimum points of the potential $V$. Moreover, the monotonicity of $f(s)/s$ and the so-called Ambrosetti-Rabinowitz condition are not required.

Infinitely many sign-changing solutions for the nonlinear Schrödinger-Poisson system

We investigate the existence of multiple bound state solutions, in particular sign-changing solutions. By using the method of invariant sets of descending flow, we prove that this system has infinitely many sign-changing solutions. In particular, the nonlinear term includes the power-type nonlinearity $f(u)=|u|^{p-2}u$ for the well-studied case $p\in(4,6)$, and the less-studied case $p\in(3,4)$, and for the latter case few existence results are available in the literature.

Standing Waves for nonlinear Schrodinger Equations involving critical growth

We consider the following singularly perturbed nonlinear elliptic problem: $$-\e^2Δu+V(x)u=f(u),\ u\in H^1(\mathbb{R^N}),$$ where $N\ge 3$ and the nonlinearity $f$ is of critical growth. In this paper, we construct a solution $u_\e$ of the above problem which concentrates at an isolated component of positive local minimum points of $V$ as $\e\to 0$ under certain conditions on $f$. Our result completes the study made in some very recent works in the sense that, in those papers only the subcritical growth was considered

Monolithic growth of ultra-thin Ge nanowires on Si(001)

Self-assembled Ge wires with a height of only 3 unit cells and a length of up to 2 micrometers were grown on Si(001) by means of a catalyst-free method based on molecular beam epitaxy. The wires grow horizontally along either the [100] or the [010] direction. On atomically flat surfaces, they exhibit a highly uniform, triangular cross section. A simple thermodynamic model accounts for the existence of a preferential base width for longitudinal expansion, in quantitative agreement with the experimental findings. Despite the absence of intentional doping, first transistor-type devices made from single wires show low-resistive electrical contacts and single hole transport at sub-Kelvin temperatures. In view of their exceptionally small and self-defined cross section, these Ge wires hold promise for the realization of hole systems with exotic properties and provide a new development route for silicon-based nanoelectronics.

Quantum entanglement and phase transition in a two-dimensional photon-photon pair model

We propose a two-dimensional model consisting of photons and photon pairs. In the model, the mixed gas of photons and photon pairs is formally equivalent to a two-dimensional system of massive bosons with non-vanishing chemical potential, which implies the existence of two possible condensate phases. Using the variational method, we discuss the quantum phase transition of the mixed gas and obtain the critical coupling line analytically. Moreover, we also find that the phase transition of the photon gas can be interpreted as second harmonic generation. We then discuss the entanglement between photons and photon pairs. Additionally, we also illustrate how the entanglement between photons and photon pairs can be associated with the phase transition of the system.
