Dynamics of rogue waves in the Davey-Stewartson II equation

General rogue waves in the Davey-Stewartson-II equation are derived by the bilinear method, and the solutions are given through determinants. It is shown that the simplest (fundamental) rogue waves are line rogue waves which arise from the constant background in a line profile and then retreat back to the constant background again. It is also shown that multi-rogue waves describe the interaction between several fundamental rogue waves, and higher-order rogue waves exhibit different dynamics (such as rising from the constant background but not retreating back to it). A remarkable feature of these rogue waves is that under certain parameter conditions, these rogue waves can blow up to infinity in finite time at isolated spatial points, i.e., exploding rogue waves exist in the Davey-Stewartson-II equation.

Stability switching at transcritical bifurcations of solitary waves in generalized nonlinear Schroedinger equations

Linear stability of solitary waves near transcritical bifurcations is analyzed for the generalized nonlinear Schroedinger equations with arbitrary forms of nonlinearity and external potentials in arbitrary spatial dimensions. Bifurcation of linear-stability eigenvalues associated with this transcritical bifurcation is analytically calculated. Based on this eigenvalue bifurcation, it is shown that both solution branches undergo stability switching at the transcritical bifurcation point. In addition, the two solution branches have opposite linear stability. These stability properties closely resemble those for transcritical bifurcations in finite-dimensional dynamical systems. This resemblance for transcritical bifurcations contrasts those for saddle-node and pitchfork bifurcations, where stability properties in the generalized nonlinear Schroedinger equations differ significantly from those in finite-dimensional dynamical systems. The analytical results are also compared with numerical results, and good agreement is obtained.

On transverse stability of discrete line solitons

We obtain sharp criteria for transverse stability and instability of line solitons in the discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equations on one- and two-dimensional lattices near the anti-continuum limit. On a two-dimensional lattice, the fundamental line soliton is proved to be transversely stable (unstable) when it bifurcates from the $X$ ($Γ$) point of the dispersion surface. On a one-dimensional (stripe) lattice, the fundamental line soliton is proved to be transversely unstable for both signs of transverse dispersion. If this transverse dispersion has the opposite sign to the discrete dispersion, the instability is caused by a resonance between isolated eigenvalues of negative energy and the continuous spectrum of positive energy. These results hold for both focusing and defocusing nonlinearities via a staggering transformation. When the line soliton is transversely unstable, asymptotic expressions for unstable eigenvalues are also derived. These analytical results are compared with numerical results, and perfect agreement is obtained.

Nonlinear dynamics of wave packets in PT-symmetric optical lattices near the phase transition point

Nonlinear dynamics of wave packets in PT-symmetric optical lattices near the phase-transition point are analytically studied. A nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation is derived for the envelope of these wave packets. A variety of novel phenomena known to exist in this envelope equation are shown to also exist in the full equation including wave blowup, periodic bound states and solitary wave solutions.

Rogue waves in the Davey-Stewartson equation

General rogue waves in the Davey-Stewartson-I equation are derived by the bilinear method. It is shown that the simplest (fundamental) rogue waves are line rogue waves which arise from the constant background with a line profile and then disappear into the constant background again. It is also shown that multi-rogue waves describe the interaction of several fundamental rogue waves. These multi-rogue waves also arise from the constant background and then decay back to it, but in the intermediate times, interesting curvy wave patterns appear. However, higher-order rogue waves are found to show more interesting features. Specifically, only part of the wave structure in the higher-order rogue waves rises from the constant background and then retreats back to it, and this transient wave exhibits novel patterns such as parabolas. But the other part of the wave structure comes from the far distance as a localized lump, which decelerates to the near field and interacts with the transient rogue wave, and is then reflected back and accelerates to the large distance again. These rogue-wave solutions have interesting implications for two-dimensional surface water waves in the ocean.

Stability analysis for pitchfork bifurcations of solitary waves in generalized nonlinear Schroedinger equations

Linear stability of both sign-definite (positive) and sign-indefinite solitary waves near pitchfork bifurcations is analyzed for the generalized nonlinear Schroedinger equations with arbitrary forms of nonlinearity and external potentials in arbitrary spatial dimensions. Bifurcations of linear-stability eigenvalues associated with pitchfork bifurcations are analytically calculated. It is shown that the smooth solution branch switches stability at the bifurcation point. In addition, the two bifurcated solution branches and the smooth branch have the opposite (same) stability when their power slopes have the same (opposite) sign. One unusual feature on the stability of these pitchfork bifurcations is that the smooth and bifurcated solution branches can be both stable or both unstable, which contrasts such bifurcations in finite-dimensional dynamical systems where the smooth and bifurcated branches generally have opposite stability. For the special case of positive solitary waves, stronger and more explicit stability results are also obtained. It is shown that for positive solitary waves, their linear stability near a bifurcation point can be read off directly from their power diagram. Lastly, various numerical examples are presented, and the numerical results confirm the analytical predictions both qualitatively and quantitatively.

Classification of solitary wave bifurcations in generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equations

Bifurcations of solitary waves are classified for the generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equations with arbitrary nonlinearities and external potentials in arbitrary spatial dimensions. Analytical conditions are derived for three major types of solitary wave bifurcations, namely saddle-node bifurcations, pitchfork bifurcations and transcritical bifurcations. Shapes of power diagrams near these bifurcations are also obtained. It is shown that for pitchfork and transcritical bifurcations, their power diagrams look differently from their familiar solution-bifurcation diagrams. Numerical examples for these three types of bifurcations are given as well. Of these numerical examples, one shows a transcritical bifurcation, which is the first report of transcritical bifurcations in the generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equations. Another shows a power loop phenomenon which contains several saddle-node bifurcations, and a third example shows double pitchfork bifurcations. These numerical examples are in good agreement with the analytical results.

Stability analysis for solitons in PT-symmetric optical lattices

Stability of solitons in parity-time (PT)-symmetric periodic potentials (optical lattices) is analyzed in both one- and two-dimensional systems. First we show analytically that when the strength of the gain-loss component in the PT lattice rises above a certain threshold (phase-transition point), an infinite number of linear Bloch bands turn complex simultaneously. Second, we show that while stable families of solitons can exist in PT lattices, increasing the gain-loss component has an overall destabilizing effect on soliton propagation. Specifically, when the gain-loss component increases, the parameter range of stable solitons shrinks as new regions of instability appear. Thirdly, we investigate the nonlinear evolution of unstable PT solitons under perturbations, and show that the energy of perturbed solitons can grow unbounded even though the PT lattice is below the phase transition point.

No Stability Switching at Saddle-Node Bifurcations of Solitary Waves in Generalized Nonlinear Schroedinger Equations

Saddle-node bifurcations arise frequently in solitary waves of diverse physical systems. Previously it was believed that solitary waves always undergo stability switching at saddle-node bifurcations, just as in finite-dimensional dynamical systems. Here we show that this is not true. For a large class of generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equations with real or complex potentials, we prove that stability of solitary waves does not switch at saddle-node bifurcations. This analytical result is confirmed by numerical examples where both soliton branches are stable at saddle-node bifurcations.

General high-order rogue waves and their dynamics in the nonlinear Schroedinger equation

General high-order rogue waves in the nonlinear Schroedinger equation are derived by the bilinear method. These rogue waves are given in terms of determinants whose matrix elements have simple algebraic expressions. It is shown that the general N-th order rogue waves contain N-1 free irreducible complex parameters. In addition, the specific rogue waves obtained by Akhmediev et al. (Phys. Rev. E 80, 026601 (2009)) correspond to special choices of these free parameters, and they have the highest peak amplitudes among all rogue waves of the same order. If other values of these free parameters are taken, however, these general rogue waves can exhibit other solution dynamics such as arrays of fundamental rogue waves arising at different times and spatial positions and forming interesting patterns.

Transversely Stable Soliton Trains in Photonic Lattices

We report the existence of transversely stable soliton trains in optics. These stable soliton trains are found in two-dimensional square photonic lattices when they bifurcate from X-symmetry points with saddle-shaped diffraction inside the first Bloch band and their amplitudes are above a certain threshold. We also show that soliton trains with low amplitudes or bifurcated from edges of the first Bloch band (Gamma and M points) still suffer transverse instability. These results are obtained in the continuous lattice model and further corroborated by the discrete model.

From nonlocal gap solitary waves to bound states in periodic media

Solitary waves in one-dimensional periodic media are discussed employing the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a spatially periodic potential as a model. This equation admits two families of gap solitons that bifurcate from the edges of Bloch bands in the linear wave spectrum. These fundamental solitons may be positioned only at specific locations relative to the potential; otherwise, they become nonlocal owing to the presence of growing tails of exponentially-small amplitude with respect to the wave peak amplitude. Here, by matching the tails of such nonlocal solitary waves, higher-order locally confined gap solitons, or bound states, are constructed. Details are worked out for bound states comprising two nonlocal solitary waves in the presence of a sinusoidal potential. A countable set of bound-state families, characterized by the separation distance of the two solitary waves, is found, and each family features three distinct solution branches that bifurcate near Bloch-band edges at small, but finite, amplitude. Power curves associated with these solution branches are computed asymptotically for large solitary-wave separation, and the theoretical predictions are consistent with numerical results.

Solitary waves and their linear stability in nonlinear lattices

Solitary waves in a general nonlinear lattice are discussed, employing as a model the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a spatially periodic nonlinear coefficient. An asymptotic theory is developed for long solitary waves, that span a large number of lattice periods. In this limit, the allowed positions of solitary waves relative to the lattice, as well as their linear stability properties, hinge upon a certain recurrence relation which contains information beyond all orders of the usual two-scale perturbation expansion. It follows that only two such positions are permissible, and of those two solitary waves, one is linearly stable and the other unstable. For a cosine lattice, in particular, the two possible solitary waves are centered at a maximum or minimum of the lattice, with the former being stable, and the analytical predictions for the associated linear stability eigenvalues are in excellent agreement with numerical results. Furthermore, a countable set of multi-solitary-wave bound states are constructed analytically. In spite of rather different physical settings, the exponential asymptotics approach followed here is strikingly similar to that taken in earlier studies of solitary wavepackets involving a periodic carrier and a slowly-varying envelope, which underscores the general value of this procedure for treating multi-scale solitary-wave problems.

N-Dark-Dark Solitons in the Generally Coupled Nonlinear Schroedinger Equations

N-dark-dark solitons in the generally coupled integrable NLS equations are derived by the KP-hierarchy reduction method. These solitons exist when nonlinearities are all defocusing, or both focusing and defocusing nonlinearities are mixed. When these solitons collide with each other, energies in both components of the solitons completely transmit through. This behavior contrasts collisions of bright-bright solitons in similar systems, where polarization rotation and soliton reflection can take place. It is also shown that in the mixed-nonlinearity case, two dark-dark solitons can form a stationary bound state.

Fully Localized Two-dimensional Embedded Solitons

We report the first prediction of fully localized two-dimensional embedded solitons. These solitons are obtained in a quasi-one-dimensional waveguide array which is periodic along one spatial direction and localized along the orthogonal direction. Under appropriate nonlinearity, these solitons are found to exist inside the Bloch bands (continuous spectrum) of the waveguide, and thus are embedded solitons. These embedded solitons are fully localized along both spatial directions. In addition, they are fully stable under perturbations. These results show that multidimensional embedded solitons may find applications just like non-embedded (regular) solitons.

Truncated-Bloch-wave solitons in optical lattices

We study self-trapped localized nonlinear states in the form of truncated Bloch waves in one-dimensional optical lattices, which appear in the gaps of the linear bandgap spectrum. We demonstrate the existence of families of such localized states which differ by the number of intensity peaks. These families do not bifurcate from the band edge, and their power curves exhibit double branches. Linear stability analysis demonstrates that in deep lattice potentials the states corresponding to the lower branches are stable, whereas those corresponding to the upper branches are unstable, independently of the number of peaks.

Separatrix Map Analysis for Fractal Scatterings in Weak Interactions of Solitary Waves

Previous studies have shown that fractal scatterings in weak interactions of solitary waves in the generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equations are described by a universal second-order separatrix map. In this paper, this separatrix map is analyzed in detail, and hence a complete characterization of fractal scatterings in these weak interactions is obtained. In particular, scaling laws of these fractals are derived analytically for different initial conditions, and these laws are confirmed by direct numerical simulations. In addition, an analytical criterion for the occurrence of fractal scatterings is given explicitly.
