A scalar nonlocal bifurcation of solitary waves for coupled nonlinear Schroedinger systems

An explanation is given for previous numerical results which suggest a certain bifurcation of `vector solitons' from scalar (single-component) solitary waves in coupled nonlinear Schroedinger (NLS) systems. The bifurcation in question is nonlocal in the sense that the vector soliton does not have a small-amplitude component, but instead approaches a solitary wave of one component with two infinitely far-separated waves in the other component. Yet, it is argued that this highly nonlocal event can be predicted from a purely local analysis of the central solitary wave alone. Specifically the linearisation around the central wave should contain asymptotics which grow at precisely the speed of the other-component solitary waves on the two wings. This approximate argument is supported by both a detailed analysis based on matched asymptotic expansions, and numerical experiments on two example systems. The first is the usual coupled NLS system involving an arbitrary ratio between the self-phase and cross-phase modulation terms, and the second is a coupled NLS system with saturable nonlinearity that has recently been demonstrated to support stable multi-peaked solitary waves. The asymptotic analysis further reveals that when the curves which define the proposed criterion for scalar nonlocal bifurcations intersect with boundaries of certain local bifurcations, the nonlocal bifurcation could turn from scalar to non-scalar at the intersection. This phenomenon is observed in the first example. Lastly, we have also selectively tested the linear stability of several solitary waves just born out of scalar nonlocal bifurcations. We found that they are linearly unstable. However, they can lead to stable solitary waves through parameter continuation.

Semi-stability of embedded solitons in the general fifth-order KdV equation

Evolution of perturbed embedded solitons in the general Hamiltonian fifth-order Korteweg--de Vries (KdV) equation is studied. When an embedded soliton is perturbed, it sheds a one-directional continuous-wave radiation. It is shown that the radiation amplitude is not minimal in general. A dynamical equation for velocity of the perturbed embedded soliton is derived. This equation shows that a neutrally stable embedded soliton is in fact semi-stable. When the perturbation increases the momentum of the embedded soliton, the perturbed state approaches asymptotically the embedded soliton, while when the perturbation reduces the momentum of the embedded soliton, the perturbed state decays into radiation. Classes of initial conditions to induce soliton decay or persistence are also determined. Our analytical results are confirmed by direct numerical simulations of the fifth-order KdV equation.

Solitons in coupled Ablowitz-Ladik chains

A model of two coupled Ablowitz-Ladik (AL) lattices is introduced. While the system as a whole is not integrable, it admits reduction to the integrable AL model for symmetric states. Stability and evolution of symmetric solitons are studied in detail analytically (by means of a variational approximation) and numerically. It is found that there exists a finite interval of positive values of the coupling constant in which the symmetric soliton is stable, provided that its mass is below a threshold value. Evolution of the unstable symmetric soliton is further studied by means of direct simulations. It is found that the unstable soliton breaks up and decays into radiation, or splits into two counter-propagating asymmetric solitons, or evolves into an asymmetric pulse, depending on the coupling coefficient and the mass of the initial soliton.

Higher-order solitons in the N-wave system

The soliton dressing matrices for the higher-order zeros of the Riemann-Hilbert problem for the $N$-wave system are considered. For the elementary higher-order zero, i.e. whose algebraic multiplicity is arbitrary but the geometric multiplicity is 1, the general soliton dressing matrix is derived. The theory is applied to the study of higher-order soliton solutions in the three-wave interaction model. The simplest higher-order soliton solution is presented. In the generic case, this solution describes the breakup of a higher-order pumping wave into two higher-order elementary waves, and the reverse process. In non-generic cases, this solution could describe ($i$) the merger of a pumping sech wave and an elementary sech wave into two elementary waves (one sech and the other one higher-order); ($ii)$ the breakup of a higher-order pumping wave into two elementary sech waves and one pumping sech wave; and the reverse processes. This solution could also reproduce fundamental soliton solutions as a special case.
