Theories for the correlated insulating states and quantum anomalous Hall phenomena in twisted bilayer graphene

The experimentally observed correlated insulating states and quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect in twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) have drawn significant attention. However, up to date, the specific mechanisms of these intriguing phenomena are still open questions. Using a fully unrestricted Hartree-Fock variational method, we have explained the correlated insulating states and QAH effects at various integer fillings of the flat bands in TBG. Our results indicate that states breaking flavor (valley and spin) symmetries are energetically favored at all integer fillings. In particular, the correlated insulating states at $\pm 1/2$ filling and at the charge neutrality point are all valley polarized sates which break $C_{2z}$ and time-reversal ($\mathcal{T}$) symmetries, but preserves $C_{2z}\mathcal{T}$ symmetry. Such valley polarized states exhibit "moiré orbital antiferromagnetic ordering" on an emergent honeycomb lattice with compensating circulating current pattern in the moiré supercell. Within the same theoretical framework, our calculations indicate that the $C\!=\!\mp 1$ QAH states at $\pm 3/4$ fillings of the magic-angle TBG are spin and orbital ferromagnetic states, which emerge when a staggered sublattice potential is present. We find that the nonlocalness of the exchange interactions tend to enhance the bandwidth of the low-energy bands due to the exchange-hole effect, which reduces the gaps of the correlated insulator phases. The nonlocal exchange interactions also dramatically enhance the spin polarization of the system, which significantly stabilize the orbital and spin ferromagnetic QAH state at $3/4$ filling of TBG aligned with hexagonal boron nitride (hBN). We also predict that, by virtue of the orbital ferromagnetic nature, the QAH effects at electron and hole fillings of hBN-aligned TBG would exhibit hysteresis loops with opposite chiralities.

Chiral Decomposition of Twisted Graphene Multilayers with Arbitrary Stacking

We formulate the chiral decomposition rules that govern the electronic structure of a broad family of twisted $N+M$ multilayer graphene configurations that combine arbitrary stacking order and a mutual twist. We show that at the magic angle in the chiral limit the low-energy bands of such systems are composed of chiral pseudospin doublets which are energetically entangled with two flat bands per valley induced by the moiré superlattice potential. The analytic analysis is supported by explicit numerical calculations based on realistic parameterization. We further show that applying vertical displacement fields can open up energy gaps between the pseudospin doublets and the two flat bands, such that the flat bands may carry nonzero valley Chern numbers. These results provide guidelines for the rational design of various topological and correlated states in generic twisted graphene multilayers.

Landau Levels as a Probe for Band Topology in Graphene Moiré Superlattices

We propose Landau levels as a probe for the topological character of electronic bands in two-dimensional moiré superlattices. We consider two configurations of twisted double bilayer graphene (TDBG) that have very similar band structures, but show different valley Chern numbers of the flat bands. These differences between the AB-AB and AB-BA configurations of TDBG clearly manifest as different Landau level sequences in the Hofstadter butterfly spectra calculated using the tight-binding model. The Landau level sequences are explained from the point of view of the distribution of orbital magnetization in momentum space that is governed by the rotational $C_2$ and time-reversal $\mathcal{T}$ symmetries. Our results can be readily extended to other twisted graphene multilayers and $h$-BN/graphene heterostructures thus establishing the Hofstadter butterfly spectra as a powerful tool for detecting the non-trivial valley band topology.

Experimental evidence for orbital magnetic moments generated by moiré-scale current loops in twisted bilayer graphene

A remarkable property of twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) with small twist angle is the presence of a well-defined and conserved low-energy valley degrees of freedom1, which can potentially bring about new types of valley-associated spontaneous-symmetry breaking phases. Electron-electron (e-e) interactions in the TBG near the magic angle 1.1 degree can lift the valley degeneracy, allowing for the realization of orbital magnetism and topological phases2-11. However, direct measurement of the orbital-based magnetism in the TBG is still lacking up to now. Here we report evidence for orbital magnetic moment generated by the moire-scale current loops in a TBG with a twist angle θ ~ 1.68 degree. The valley degeneracy of the 1.68 degree TBG is removed by e-e interactions when its low-energy van Hove singularity (VHS) is nearly half filled. A large and linear response of the valley splitting to magnetic fields is observed, attributing to coupling to the large orbital magnetic moment induced by chiral current loops circulating in the moire pattern. According to our experiment, the orbital magnetic moment is about 10.7 uB per moire supercell. Our result paves the way to explore magnetism that is purely orbital in slightly twisted graphene system.

Anomalous Hall effect, magneto-optical properties, and nonlinear optical properties of twisted graphene systems

We study the anomalous Hall effect, magneto-optical properties, and nonlinear optical properties of twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) aligned with hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) substrate as well as twisted double bilayer graphene systems. We show that non-vanishing valley polarizations in twisted graphene systems would give rise to anomalous Hall effect which can be tuned by in-plane magnetic fields. The valley polarized states are also associated with giant Faraday/Kerr rotations in the terahertz frequency regime. Moreover, both hBN-aligned TBG and TDBG exhibit colossal nonlinear optical responses by virtue of the inversion-symmetry breaking, the small bandwidth, and the small excitation gaps of the systems. Our calculations indicate that in both systems the nonlinear optical conductivities of the shift currents are on the order of $10^3\,μ$A/V$^2$; and the second harmonic generation (SHG) susceptibilities are on the order of $10^6\,$pm/V in the terahertz frequency regime. Moreover, in TDBG with $AB\textrm{-}BA$ stacking, we find that a finite orbital magnetization would generate a new component $σ^{x}_{xx} $ of the nonlinear photoconductivity tensor; while in $AB$-$AB$ stacked TDBG with vertical electric fields, the valley polarization and orbital magnetization would make significant contributions to the $σ^{y}_{xx}$ component of the photoconductivity tensor. These nonlinear photo-conductivities are proportional to the orbital magnetizations of the systems, thus they are expected to exhibit hysteresis behavior in response to out-of-plane magnetic fields.

Coherent driving \emph{versus} decoherent dissipation in double inner-shell ionizations of neon atoms by attosecond pulses

Exchange correlation plays an important role in double-ionization of complex atoms by ultrashort laser pulse. In this work, we investigate two-photon double inner-shell electron ionization of neon induced by an attosecond extreme ultraviolent pulse in the framework of the quantum master equation. Our simulations reveal a distinct non-sequential effect via broadened double peaks, as a result of energy sharing between the two ionized electrons. When dissipation is included to show the interplay of coherence and decoherence, the two-photon double-ionization scaling law breaks down. We further study the total cross section of $2s^2$ double ionization as a function of photon energy in both $non$-$sequential$ and $sequential$ regions.

Quantum valley Hall effect, orbital magnetism, and anomalous Hall effect in twisted multilayer graphene systems

We study the electronic structures and topological properties of $(M+N)$-layer twisted graphene systems. We consider the generic situation that $N$-layer graphene is placed on top of the other $M$-layer graphene, and is twisted with respect to each other by an angle $θ$. In such twisted multilayer graphene (TMG) systems, we find that there exists two low-energy flat bands for each valley emerging from the interface between the $M$ layers and the $N$ layers. These two low-energy bands in the TMG system possess valley Chern numbers that are dependent on both the number of layers and the stacking chiralities. In particular, when the stacking chiralities of the $M$ layers and $N$ layers are opposite, the total Chern number of the two low-energy bands for each valley equals to $\pm(M+N-2)$ (per spin). If the stacking chiralities of the $M$ layers and the $N$ layers are the same, then the total Chern number of the two low-energy bands for each valley is $\pm(M-N)$ (per spin). The valley Chern numbers of the low-energy bands are associated with large, valley-contrasting orbital magnetizations, suggesting the possible existence of orbital ferromagnetism and anomalous Hall effect once the valley degeneracy is lifted either externally by a weak magnetic field or internally by Coulomb interaction through spontaneous symmetry breaking.

The pseudo-Landau-level representation of twisted bilayer graphene: band topology and the implications on the correlated insulating phase

We propose that the electronic structure of twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) can be understood as Dirac fermions coupled with opposite pseudo magnetic fields generated by the moiré pattern. The two low-energy flat bands from each monolayer valley originate from the two zeroth pseudo Landau levels of Dirac fermions under such opposite effective magnetic fields, which have opposite sublattice polarizations and carry opposite Chern numbers $\pm1$, giving rise to helical edge states in the gaps below and above the low-energy bulk bands near the first magic angle. We argue that small Coulomb interactions would split the eight-fold degeneracy (including valley and physical spin) of these zeroth pseudo Landau levels, and may lead to insulating phases with non-vanishing Chern numbers at integer fillings. Besides, we show that all the high-energy bands below or above the flat bands are also topologically nontrivial in the sense that for each valley the sum of their Berry phases is quantized as $\pmπ$. Such quantized Berry phases give rise to nearly flat edge states, which are dependent on truncations on the moiré length scale. Our work provides a complete and clear picture for the electronic structure and topological properties of TBG, and has significant implications on the natrue of the correlated insulating phase observed in experiments.

Polarized Raman spectroscopy study of metallic $(Sr_{1-x}La_{x})_{3}Ir_{2}O_{7}$: a consistent picture of disorder-interrupted unidirectional charge order

We have used rotational anisotropic polarized Raman spectroscopy to study the symmetries, the temperature and the doping dependence of the charge ordered state in metallic $(Sr_{1-x}La_{x})_{3}Ir_{2}O_{7}$. Although the Raman probe size is greater than the charge ordering length, we establish that the charge ordering breaks the fourfold rotational symmetry of the underlying tetragonal crystal lattice into twofold, as well as the translational symmetry, and forms short-range domains with $90^{\circ}$ rotated charge order wave vectors, as soon as the charge order sets in below $T_{CO} = \sim$ 200K and across the doping-induced insulator metal transition. We observe that this charge order mode frequency remains nearly constant over a wide temperature range and up to the highest doping level. These above features are highly reminiscent of the ubiquitous unidirectional charge order in underdoped high-$T_C$ copper-oxide-based superconductors (cuprates). We further resolve that the charge order damping rate diverges when approaching $T_{CO}$ from below and increases significantly as increasing the La doping level, which resembles the behaviors for a disorder-interrupted ordered phase and has not been observed for the charge order in cuprates.

Floquet spin and spin-orbital Hamiltonians and doublon-holon generations in periodically driven Mott insulators

We consider Mott insulators driven by periodic coherent laser radiation, using both single orbital and multi-orbital models, noting that the latter is of more interest in solid state systems. We derive general expressions for the resulting periodically driven spin models and spin-orbital models using time-dependent perturbation theory. First, we show that the effective exchange interactions of the Floquet Hamiltonians are highly tunable by the frequency, amplitude, and polarization of the laser. Second, we take the effect of finite bandwidth of excitations into account and study possible heating effects. Using the same formalism with a slight modification we also consider the small frequency regime and study the dielectric breakdown of Mott insulators.

Floquet engineering of multi-orbital Mott insulators: applications to orthorhombic titanates

We consider driving multi-orbital Mott insulators using laser radiation. We derive general expressions for periodically driven spin-orbital models using time-dependent perturbation theory in the strong interaction limit. We show that the effective exchange interactions of the Floquet spin-orbital Hamiltonian are highly tunable via variations of the frequency, amplitude, and polarization of the laser. We also take the effect of finite bandwidth of excitations into account and study possible heating effects. We further apply our formalism to orthorhombic titanates YTiO$_3$ and LaTiO$_3$ based on first-principles calculations, and find that the spin exchange interactions in these compounds can be engineered to a large extent by tuning the frequency and electric-field amplitude of the laser.

Observation of oscillatory relaxation in the Sn-terminated surface of epitaxial rock-salt SnSe $\{111\}$ topological crystalline insulator

Topological crystalline insulators have been recently predicted and observed in rock-salt structure SnSe $\{111\}$ thin films. Previous studies have suggested that the Se-terminated surface of this thin film with hydrogen passivation, has a reduced surface energy and is thus a preferred configuration. In this paper, synchrotron-based angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, along with density functional theory calculations, are used to demonstrate conclusively that a rock-salt SnSe $\{111\}$ thin film epitaxially-grown on \ce{Bi2Se3} has a stable Sn-terminated surface. These observations are supported by low energy electron diffraction (LEED) intensity-voltage measurements and dynamical LEED calculations, which further show that the Sn-terminated SnSe $\{111\}$ thin film has undergone a surface structural relaxation of the interlayer spacing between the Sn and Se atomic planes. In sharp contrast to the Se-terminated counterpart, the observed Dirac surface state in the Sn-terminated SnSe $\{111\}$ thin film is shown to yield a high Fermi velocity, $0.50\times10^6$m/s, which suggests a potential mechanism of engineering the Dirac surface state of topological materials by tuning the surface configuration.

Anomalous Hall effect and topological defects in antiferromagnetic Weyl semimetals: Mn$_3$Sn/Ge

We theoretically study the interplay between bulk Weyl electrons and magnetic topological defects, including magnetic domains, domain walls, and $\mathbb{Z}_6$ vortex lines, in the antiferromagnetic Weyl semimetals \mnsn\ and Mn$_3$Ge with negative vector chirality. We argue that these materials possess a hierarchy of energies scales which allows a description of the spin structure and spin dynamics using a XY model with $\mathbb{Z}_6$ anisotropy. We propose a dynamical equation of motion for the XY order parameter, which implies the presence of $\mathbb{Z}_6$ vortex lines, the double-domain pattern in the presence of magnetic fields, and the ability to control domains with current. We also introduce a minimal electronic model which allows efficient calculation of the electronic structure in the antiferromagnetic configuration, unveiling Fermi arcs at domain walls, and sharp quasi-bound states at $\mathbb{Z}_6$ vortices. Moreover, we have shown how these materials may allow electronic-based imaging of antiferromagnetic microstructure, and propose a possible device based on domain-dependent anomalous Hall effect.

Correlation and transport phenomena in topological nodal-loop semimetals

We study the unique physical properties of topological nodal-loop semimetals protected by the coexistence of time-reversal and inversion symmetries with negligible spin-orbit coupling. We argue that strong correlation effects occur at the surface of such systems for relatively small Hubbard interaction $U$, due to the narrow bandwidth of the "drumhead" surface states. In the Hartree-Fock approximation, at small $U$ we obtain a surface ferromagnetic phase through a continuous quantum phase transition characterized by the surface-mode divergence of the spin susceptibility, while the bulk states remain very robust against local interactions and remain non-ordered. At slightly increased interaction strength, the system quickly changes from a surface ferromagnetic phase to a surface charge-ordered phase through a first-order transition. When Rashba-type spin-orbit coupling is applied to the surface states, a canted ferromagnetic phase occurs at the surface for intermediate values of $U$. The quantum critical behavior of the surface ferromagnetic transition is nontrivial in the sense that the surface spin order parameter couple to Fermi-surface excitations from both surface and bulk states. This leads to unconventional Landau damping and consequently a naïve dynamical critical exponent $z\!\approx\!1$ when the Fermi level is close to the bulk nodal energy. We also show that, already without interactions, quantum oscillations arise due to bulk states, despite the absence of a Fermi surface when the chemical potential is tuned to the energy of the nodal loop. The bulk magnetic susceptibility diverges logarithmically whenever the nodal loop exactly overlaps with a quantized magnetic orbit in the bulk Brillouin zone. These correlation and transport phenomena are unique signatures of nodal loop states.

Flux states and topological phases from spontaneous time-reversal symmetry breaking in CrSi(Ge)Te$_3$-based systems

We study adatom-covered single layers of CrSiTe$_3$ and CrGeTe$_3$ using first-principles calculations based on hybrid functionals. We find that the insulating ground state of a monolayer of La (Lu) deposited on single-layer CrSiTe$_3$ (CrGeTe$_3$) carries spontaneously generated current loops around the Cr sites, These "flux states" induce antiferromagnetically ordered orbital moments on the Cr sites and are also associated with nontrivial topological properties. The calculated Chern numbers for these systems are predicted to be $\pm 1$ even in the absence of spin-orbit coupling, with sizable gaps on the order of 100 meV. The flux states and the associated topological phases result from spontaneous time-reversal symmetry breaking due to the presence of nonlocal Coulomb interactions.

Topological nodal-line semimetals in alkaline-earth stannides, germanides and silicides

Based on first-principles calculations and an effective Hamiltonian analysis, we systematically investigate the electronic and topological properties of alkaline-earth compounds $AX_2$ ($A$=Ca, Sr, Ba; $X$=Si, Ge, Sn). Taking BaSn$_2$ as an example, we find that when spin-orbit coupling is ignored, these materials are three-dimensional topological nodal-line semimetals characterized by a snake-like nodal loop in three-dimensional momentum space. Drumhead-like surface states emerge either inside or outside the loop circle on the (001) surface depending on surface termination, while complicated double-drumhead-like surface states appear on the (010) surface. When spin-orbit coupling is included, the nodal line is gapped and the system becomes a topological insulator with Z$_2$ topological invariants (1;001). Since spin-orbit coupling effects are weak in light elements, the nodal-line semimetal phase is expected to be achievable in some alkaline-earth germanides and silicides.

Tunable inverse topological heterostructure utilizing $(Bi_{1-x}In_{x})_{2}Se_{3}$

In typical topological insulator (TI) systems the TI is bordered by a non-TI insulator, and the surrounding conventional insulators, including vacuum, are not generally treated as part of the TI system. Here, we implement the first material system where the roles are reversed, and the TSS form around the non-TI (instead of the TI) layers. This is realized by growing a layer of the tunable non-TI $(Bi_{1-x}In_{x})_{2}Se_{3}$ in between two layers of the TI $Bi_2Se_3$ using the atomically-precise molecular beam epitaxy technique. On this tunable inverse topological platform, we systematically vary the thickness and the composition of the $(Bi_{1-x}In_{x})_{2}Se_{3}$ layer and show that this tunes the coupling between the TI layers from strongly-coupled metallic to weakly-coupled, and finally to a fully-decoupled insulating regime. This system can be used to probe the fundamental nature of coupling in TI materials and provides a tunable insulating layer for TI devices.

Gauge-discontinuity contributions to Chern-Simons orbital magnetoelectric coupling

We propose a new method for calculating the Chern-Simons orbital magnetoelectric coupling, conventionally parametrized in terms of a phase angle $θ$. According to previous theories, $θ$ can be expressed as a 3D Brillouin-zone integral of the Chern-Simons 3-form defined in terms of the occupied Bloch functions. Such an expression is valid only if a smooth and periodic gauge has been chosen in the entire Brillouin zone, and even then, convergence with respect to the $\mathbf{k}$-space mesh density can be difficult to obtain. In order to solve this problem, we propose to relax the periodicity condition in one direction (say, the $k_z$ direction) so that a gauge discontinuity is introduced on a 2D $\mathbf{k}$ plane normal to $k_z$. The total $θ$ response then has contributions from both the integral of the Chern-Simons 3-form over the 3D bulk BZ and the gauge discontinuity expressed as a 2D integral over the $\mathbf{k}$ plane. Sometimes the boundary plane may be further divided into subregions by 1D "vortex loops" which make a third kind of contribution to the total $θ$, expressed as a combination of Berry phases around the vortex loops. The total $θ$ thus consists of three terms which can be expressed as integrals over 3D, 2D and 1D manifolds. When time-reversal symmetry is present and the gauge in the bulk BZ is chosen to respect this symmetry, both the 3D and 2D integrals vanish; the entire contribution then comes from the vortex-loop integral, which is either 0 or $π$ corresponding to the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ classification of 3D time-reversal invariant insulators. We demonstrate our method by applying it to the Fu-Kane-Mele model with an applied staggered Zeeman field.
