Mathematical modelling and study of the encoding readout scheme for position sensitive detectors

Encoding readout methods based on different schemes have been successfully developed and tested with different types of position-sensitive detectors with strip-readout structures. However, how to construct an encoding scheme in a more general and systematic way is still under study. In this paper, we present a graph model for the encoding scheme. With this model, encoding schemes can be studied in a more systematic way. It is shown that by using an encoding readout method, a maximum of n(n-1)/2+1 strips can be processed with n channels if n is odd, while a maximum of (n(n-2))/2+2 strips can be processed with n channels if n is even. Furthermore, based on the model, the encoding scheme construction problem can be translated into a problem in graph theory, the aim of which is to construct an Eulerian trail such that the length of the shortest subcycle is as long as possible. A more general approach to constructing the encoding scheme is found by solving the associated mathematical problem. In addition, an encoding scheme prototype has been constructed, and verified with MRPC detectors.

Quantitative Analysis and Efficiency Study of PSD Methods for a LaBr3:Ce Detector

The LaBr3:Ce scintillator has been widely studied for nuclear spectroscopy because of its optimal energy resolution (<3%@ 662 keV) and time resolution (~300 ps). Despite these promising properties, the intrinsic radiation background of LaBr3:Ce is a critical issue, and pulse shape discrimination (PSD) has been shown to be an efficient potential method to suppress the alpha background from the 227Ac. In this paper, the charge comparison method (CCM) for alpha and gamma discrimination in LaBr3:Ce is quantitatively analysed and compared with two other typical PSD methods using digital pulse processing. The algorithm parameters and discrimination efficiency are calculated for each method. Moreover, for the CCM, the correlation between the CCM feature value distribution and the total charge (energy) is studied, and a fitting equation for the correlation is inferred and experimentally verified. Using the equations, an energy-dependent threshold can be chosen to optimize the discrimination efficiency. Additionally, the experimental results show a potential application in low-activity high-energy γ measurement by suppressing the alpha background.

A Prototype of LaBr3:Ce in situ Gamma-Ray Spectrometer for Marine Environmental Monitoring

A prototype of LaBr3:Ce in situ gamma-ray spectrometer for marine environmental monitoring is developed and applied for in situ measurement. A 3-inch LaBr3:Ce scintillator is used in the detector, and a digital pulse process electronics is chosen as the pulse height analyzer. For this prototype, the energy response of the spectrometer is linear and the energy resolution of 662keV is 2.6% (much better than NaI). With the measurement of the prototype in a water tank filled with 137Cs, the detect efficiency for 137Cs is (0.288 0.01)cps/(Bq/L), which is close to the result of Monte Carlo simulation, 0.283cps/(Bq/L). With this measurement, the MDAC for 137Cs in one hour has been calculated to 0.78Bq/L, better than that of NaI(Tl) in-situ gamma spectrometer, which is ~1.0Bq/L.

The cosmic ray muon tomography facility based on large scale MRPC detector

Cosmic ray muon tomography is a novel technology to detect high-Z material. A prototype of TUMUTY with 73.6 cm x 73.6 cm large scale position sensitive MRPC detectors has been developed and is introduced in this paper. Three test kits have been tested and image is reconstructed using MAP algorithm. The reconstruction results show that the prototype is working well and the objects with complex structure and small size (20 mm) can be imaged on it, while the high-Z material is distinguishable from the low-Z one. This prototype provides a good platform for our further studies of the physical characteristics and the performances of cosmic ray muon tomography.

The characteristics of a low background germanium gamma ray spectrometer at China JinPing underground Laboratory

A low background germanium gamma ray spectrometer, GeTHU, has been installed at China JinPing underground Laboratory. The integral background count rate between 40 and 2700 keV was 0.6 cpm, and the origin was studied by Monte Carlo simulation. Detection limits and efficiencies were calculated for selected gamma peaks. Boric acid and silica sand samples were measured and 137Cs contamination was found in boric acid. GeTHU will be mainly used to measure environmental samples and screen materials in dark matter experiments.

A background simulation method for cosmogenic nuclides inside HPGe detectors for rare event experiments

Cosmogenic nuclides inside germanium detectors contribute background noise spectra quite different from ordinary external sources. We propose and discuss a nuclide decay and level transition model based on graph theory to understand the background contribution of the decay of cosmogenic nuclides inside a germanium crystal. In this work, not only was the level transition process, but the detector response time was also taken into consideration to decide whether or not to apply coincidence summing-up. We simulated the background spectrum of the internal cosmogenic nuclides in a germanium detector, and found some unique phenomena caused by the coincidence summing-up effect in the simulated spectrum. Thus, the background spectrum of each cosmogenic nuclide can be quantitatively obtained.
