On spectral radius of strongly connected digraphs

We determine the digraphs which achieve the second, the third and the fourth minimum spectral radii respectively among strongly connected digraphs of order $n\ge 4$, and thus we answer affirmatively the problem whether the unique digraph which achieves the minimum spectral radius among all strongly connected bicyclic digraphs of order $n$ achieves the second minimum spectral radius among all strongly connected digraphs of order $n$ for $n\ge 4$ proposed in [H. Lin, J. Shu, A note on the spectral characterization of strongly connected bicyclic digraphs, Linear Algebra Appl. 436 (2012) 2524--2530]. We also discuss the strongly connected bicyclic digraphs with small and large spectral radii respectively.

Determination of Intrinsic Mode and Linear Mode Coupling in Solar Microwave Bursts

An explicit equation of the propagational angle of microwave emission between the line-of-sight and the local magnetic field is newly derived. The existence of the solution of propagational angle is clearly shown under a series of typical parameters in solar microwave observations. It could be used to determine the intrinsic mode and linear mode coupling in solar microwave bursts. However, a 180-degree ambiguity still exists in the direction of longitudinal magnetic field, to produce an uncertainty of the intrinsic mode. One example is selected to check the feasibility of the method in the 2001 September 25 event with a loop-like structure nearby the central meridian passage observed by Nobeyama Radio Heliograph and Polarimeters. The calculated angle in one footpoint (FP) varied around 90 degree in two time intervals of the maximum phase, which gives a direct evidence of the emission propagating through a quasi-transverse region where the linear mode coupling took place, while, the angle in another FP was always smaller than 90 degrees where the mode coupling did not happen. Moreover, the right-circular sense at 17 GHz was always observed in both two FPs during the event, which supports that the transition frequency should be larger than 17 GHz in the first FP together with strong magnetic field of over 2000 Gauses in photosphere, where the weakly coupled case should happen. Moreover, there are two possibilities of the intrinsic mode in the two FPs due to the 180-degree ambiguity.

Structure and Magnetism in Mn Doped Zirconia: Density-functional Theory Studies

Using the first-principles density-functional theory plan-wave pseudopotential method, we investigate the structure and magnetism in 25% Mn substitutive and interstitial doped monoclinic, tetragonal and cubic ZrO2 systematically. Our studies show that the introduction of Mn impurities into ZrO2 not only stabilizes the high temperature phase, but also endows ZrO2 with magnetism. Based on the simple crystal field theory (CFT), we discuss the origination of magnetism in Mn doped ZrO2. Moreover, we discuss the effect of electron donor on magnetic semiconductors, and the possibility as electronic structure modulator.

Ferromagnetism in Mn Substituted Zirconia: A Density-functional Theory Study

We study the electronic structure and magnetism of 25% Mn substituted cubic Zirconia (ZrO2) with several homogeneous and heterogeneous doping profiles using density-functional theory calculations. We find that all doping profiles show half-metallic ferromagnetism (HMF), and delta-doping is most energy favorable while homogeneous doping has largest ferromagnetic stabilization energy. Using crystal field theory, we discuss the formation scheme of HMF. Finally, we speculate the potential spintronics applications for Mn doped ZrO2, especially as spin direction controllment.

Some Mathematical and Numerical Issues in Geophysical Fluid Dynamics and Climate Dynamics

In this article, we address both recent advances and open questions in some mathematical and computational issues in geophysical fluid dynamics (GFD) and climate dynamics. The main focus is on 1) the primitive equations (PEs) models and their related mathematical and computational issues, 2) climate variability, predictability and successive bifurcation, and 3) a new dynamical systems theory and its applications to GFD and climate dynamics.
