Deep Social Collaborative Filtering

Recommender systems are crucial to alleviate the information overload problem in online worlds. Most of the modern recommender systems capture users' preference towards items via their interactions based on collaborative filtering techniques. In addition to the user-item interactions, social networks can also provide useful information to understand users' preference as suggested by the social theories such as homophily and influence. Recently, deep neural networks have been utilized for social recommendations, which facilitate both the user-item interactions and the social network information. However, most of these models cannot take full advantage of the social network information. They only use information from direct neighbors, but distant neighbors can also provide helpful information. Meanwhile, most of these models treat neighbors' information equally without considering the specific recommendations. However, for a specific recommendation case, the information relevant to the specific item would be helpful. Besides, most of these models do not explicitly capture the neighbor's opinions to items for social recommendations, while different opinions could affect the user differently. In this paper, to address the aforementioned challenges, we propose DSCF, a Deep Social Collaborative Filtering framework, which can exploit the social relations with various aspects for recommender systems. Comprehensive experiments on two-real world datasets show the effectiveness of the proposed framework.

Deep Adversarial Social Recommendation

Recent years have witnessed rapid developments on social recommendation techniques for improving the performance of recommender systems due to the growing influence of social networks to our daily life. The majority of existing social recommendation methods unify user representation for the user-item interactions (item domain) and user-user connections (social domain). However, it may restrain user representation learning in each respective domain, since users behave and interact differently in the two domains, which makes their representations to be heterogeneous. In addition, most of traditional recommender systems can not efficiently optimize these objectives, since they utilize negative sampling technique which is unable to provide enough informative guidance towards the training during the optimization process. In this paper, to address the aforementioned challenges, we propose a novel deep adversarial social recommendation framework DASO. It adopts a bidirectional mapping method to transfer users' information between social domain and item domain using adversarial learning. Comprehensive experiments on two real-world datasets show the effectiveness of the proposed framework.

CoUAV: A Cooperative UAV Fleet Control and Monitoring Platform

In the past decade, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have been widely used in various civilian applications, most of which only require a single UAV. In the near future, it is expected that more and more applications will be enabled by the cooperation of multiple UAVs. To facilitate such applications, it is desirable to utilize a general control platform for cooperative UAVs. However, existing open-source control platforms cannot fulfill such a demand because (1) they only support the leader-follower mode, which limits the design options for fleet control, (2) existing platforms can support only certain UAVs and thus lack of compatibility, and (3) these platforms cannot accurately simulate a flight mission, which may cause a big gap between simulation and real flight. To address these issues, we propose a general control and monitoring platform for cooperative UAV fleet, namely, CoUAV, which provides a set of core cooperation services of UAVs, including synchronization, connectivity management, path planning, energy simulation, etc. To verify the applicability of CoUAV, we design and develop a prototype and we use the new system to perform an emergency search application that aims to complete a task with the minimum flying time. To achieve this goal, we design and implement a path planning service that takes both the UAV network connectivity and coverage into consideration so as to maximize the efficiency of a fleet. Experimental results by both simulation and field test demonstrate that the proposed system is viable.

Vision and Challenges for Knowledge Centric Networking (KCN)

In the creation of a smart future information society, Internet of Things (IoT) and Content Centric Networking (CCN) break two key barriers for both the front-end sensing and back-end networking. However, we still observe the missing piece of the research that dominates the current networking traffic control and system management, e.g., lacking of the knowledge penetrated into both sensing and networking to glue them holistically. In this paper, we envision to leverage emerging machine learning or deep learning techniques to create aspects of knowledge for facilitating the designs. In particular, we can extract knowledge from collected data to facilitate reduced data volume, enhanced system intelligence and interactivity, improved service quality, communication with better controllability and lower cost. We name such a knowledge-oriented traffic control and networking management paradigm as the Knowledge Centric Networking (KCN). This paper presents KCN rationale, KCN benefits, related works and research opportunities.

X-ray absorption of liquid water by advanced ab initio methods

Oxygen K-edge X-ray absorption spectra of liquid water are computed based on the configurations from advanced ab initio molecular dynamics simulations, as well as an electron excitation theory from the GW method. One one hand, the molecular structures of liquid water are accurately predicted by including both van der Waals interactions and hybrid functional (PBE0). On the other hand, the dynamic screening effects on electron excitation are approximately described by the recently developed enhanced static Coulomb hole and screened exchange approximation by Kang and Hybertsen [Phys. Rev. B 82, 195108 (2010)]. The resulting spectra of liquid water are in better quantitative agreement with the experimental spectra due to the softened hydrogen bonds and the slightly broadened spectra originating from the better screening model.

The role of electron and phonon temperatures in the helicity-independent all-optical switching of GdFeCo

Ultrafast optical heating of the electrons in ferrimagnetic metals can result in all-optical switching (AOS) of the magnetization. Here we report quantitative measurements of the temperature rise of GdFeCo thin films during helicity-independent AOS. Critical switching fluences are obtained as a function of the initial temperature of the sample and for laser pulse durations from 55 fs to 15 ps. We conclude that non-equilibrium phenomena are necessary for helicity-independent AOS, although the peak electron temperature does not play a critical role. Pump-probe time-resolved experiments show that the switching time increases as the pulse duration increases, with 10 ps pulses resulting in switching times of ~sim 13 ps. These results raise new questions about the fundamental mechanism of helicity-independent AOS.

Towards scalable entangled photon sources with self-assembled InAs/GaAs quantum dots

Biexciton cascade process in self-assembled quantum dots (QDs) provides an ideal system for deterministic entangled photon pair source, which is essential in quantum information science. The entangled photon pairs have recently be realized in experiments after eliminating the FSS of exciton using a number of different methods. However, so far the QDs entangled photon sources are not scalable, because the wavelengths of the QDs are different from dot to dot. Here we propose a wavelength tunable entangled photon emitter on a three dimensional stressor, in which the FSS and exciton energy can be tuned independently, allowing photon entanglement between dissimilar QDs. We confirm these results by using atomistic pseudopotential calculations. This provides a first step towards future realization of scalable entangled photon generators for quantum information applications.

Theory of strain tunning exction coupling in self-assembled InAs/GaAs quantum dots

We derive analytically the change of exciton fine structure splitting (FSS) under the external stresses in the self-assembled InAs/GaAs quantum dots using the Bir-Pikus model. We find that the FSS change is mainly due to the strain induced valence bands mixing and valence-conduction band coupling. The exciton polarization angle under strain are determined by the argument of the electron-hole off-diagonal exchange integrals. The theory agrees well with the empirical pseudopotential calculations.

Power Penalty Due to First-order PMD in Optical OFDM/QAM and FBMC/OQAM Transmission System

Polarization mode dispersion (PMD) is a challenge for high-data-rate optical-communication systems. More researches are desirable for impairments that is induced by PMD in high-speed optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) transmission system. In this paper, an approximately analytical method for evaluating the power penalty due to first-order PMD in optical OFDM with quadrature amplitude modulation (OFDM/QAM) and filter bank based multi-carrier with offset quadrature amplitude modulation (FBMC/OQAM) transmission system is presented. The simulation results show that, compared with the single carrier with quadrature phase shift keying(SC-QPSK), both the OFDM/QAM and the FBMC/OQAM can decrease the power penalty caused by PMD by half. Furthermore, the FBMC/OQAM shows better power penalty immunity than the OFDM/QAM under the influence of first order PMD.

Conquer the fine structure splitting of excitons in self-assembled InAs/GaAs quantum dots via combined stresses

Eliminating the fine structure splitting (FSS) of excitons in self-assembled quantum dots (QDs) is essential to the generation of high quality entangled photon pairs. It has been shown that the FSS has a lower bound under uniaxial stress. In this letter, we show that the FSS of excitons in a general self-assembled InGaAs/GaAs QD can be fully suppressed via combined stresses along the [110] and [010] directions. The result is confirmed by atomic empirical pseudopotential calculations. For all the QDs we studied, the FSS can be tuned to be vanishingly small ($<$ 0.1 $μ$eV), which is sufficient small for high quality entangled photon emission.

Temperature Dependent Empirical Pseudopotential Theory For Self-Assembled Quantum Dots

We develop a temperature dependent empirical pseudopotential theory to study the electronic and optical properties of self-assembled quantum dots (QDs) at finite temperature. The theory takes the effects of both lattice expansion and lattice vibration into account. We apply the theory to the InAs/GaAs QDs. For the unstrained InAs/GaAs heterostructure, the conduction band offset increases whereas the valence band offset decreases with increasing of the temperature, and there is a type-I to type-II transition at approximately 135 K. Yet, for InAs/GaAs QDs, the holes are still localized in the QDs even at room temperature, because the large lattice mismatch between InAs and GaAs greatly enhances the valence band offset. The single particle energy levels in the QDs show strong temperature dependence due to the change of confinement potentials. Because of the changes of the band offsets, the electron wave functions confined in QDs increase by about 1 - 5%, whereas the hole wave functions decrease by about 30 - 40% when the temperature increases from 0 to 300 K. The calculated recombination energies of exciton, biexciton and charged excitons show red shifts with increasing of the temperature, which are in excellent agreement with available experimental data.

Service Composition in Service-Oriented Wireless Sensor Networks with Persistent Queries

Service-oriented wireless sensor network(WSN) has been recently proposed as an architecture to rapidly develop applications in WSNs. In WSNs, a query task may require a set of services and may be carried out repetitively with a given frequency during its lifetime. A service composition solution shall be provided for each execution of such a persistent query task. Due to the energy saving strategy, some sensors may be scheduled to be in sleep mode periodically. Thus, a service composition solution may not always be valid during the lifetime of a persistent query. When a query task needs to be conducted over a new service composition solution, a routing update procedure is involved which consumes energy. In this paper, we study service composition design which minimizes the number of service composition solutions during the lifetime of a persistent query. We also aim to minimize the total service composition cost when the minimum number of required service composition solutions is derived. A greedy algorithm and a dynamic programming algorithm are proposed to complete these two objectives respectively. The optimality of both algorithms provides the service composition solutions for a persistent query with minimum energy consumption.
