A centrosymmetric hexagonal magnet with superstable biskyrmion magnetic nanodomains in a wide temperature range of 100K to 340K

Here, we report on the experimental discovery of biskyrmion magnetic nanodomains at RT and the observation of a biskyrmion-derived topological Hall effect (THE) in the centrosymmetric hexagonal MnNiGa magnet. Using a phase reconstruction technique based on a transport-of-intensity equation (TIE), we established the texture of the biskyrmion spin. Results from Lorentz transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and the topological Hall effect revealed that the biskyrmion phase is stable over a much wider temperature range (100 K to ~340K) and a larger magnetic field range in our material than in skyrmion-hosting bulk crystals reported previously[1-3,6]. The super-wide operating temperature and the broad range of material options indicate important progress toward the realization of skyrmion-based spintronic devices.

Superconducting dome and microstructure properties of Rb0.8Fe1.6+xSe2 superconductors

High quality Rb0.8Fe1.6+xSe2 single crystals are grown by a one step melting growth method. Superconductivity has been observed in all samples with x more than 0.05 and the maximum critical temperature Tc~32 K has been obtained in samples with x from 0.1 to 0.2 from electronic resistivity measurement. A superconducting dome in the electronic phase diagram of Tc as a function of Fe content has been observed for the first time in this AxFeySe2 (A=K,Rb) superconducting system. Two coexisting phases with structural modulation vectors of q1=1/5 [3a*+b*] and q2=1/2[a*+b*] have been observed in all superconducting samples by TEM observations. Moreover, phase separation in the superconducting crystals, which can be recognized as micro-stripes in the ab plane, are found to be highly dependent on the Fe content.

Ultrafast transmission electron microscopy on dynamic process of a CDW transition in 1T-TaSe2

Four-dimensional ultrafast transmission electron microscopy (4D-UTEM) measurements reveal a rich variety of structural dynamic phenomena at a phase transition in the charge-density-wave (CDW) 1T-TaSe2. Through the photoexcitation, remarkable changes on both the CDW intensity and orientation are clearly observed associated with the transformation from a commensurate (C) into an incommensurate (IC) phase in a time-scale of about 3 ps. Moreover, the transient states show up a notable "structurally isosbestic point" at a wave vector of qiso where the C and IC phases yield their diffracting efficiencies in an equally ratio. This fact demonstrates that the crystal planes parallel to qiso adopts visibly common structural features in these two CDW phases. The second-order characters observed in this nonequilibrium phase transition have been also analyzed based on the time-resolved structural data.

High performance FeSe0.5Te0.5 thin films grown at low temperature by pulsed laser deposition

We report on fully epitaxial FeSe0.5Te0.5 (FST) thin films with high-quality grown on CaF2 (00l) substrate at a low temperature of 300°C by pulsed laser deposition. The transport Jc of thin films is up to 1.36 MA/cm2 in self-field and 0.97 MA/cm2 in 9 T at 4.2 K, indicating very weak field dependence. A nearly isotropy of Jc (γ= Jc(H//ab)/Jc(H//c) as low as 1.09 at 9 T is achieved in the FST thin films. Moreover, no clear amorphous interfacial layer presents between the film and the substrate probably ascribing to low temperature and low laser repetition rate grown, while the thickness of reaction layer is approximate 5 nm in many other works. The evidences of transmission electron microscopy show some lattices with lateral size of < 5 nm x 20 nm seem to be disturbed. Those location defects are thought to be responsible for nearly isotropic behavior of superconductivity.

Phase diagram of (Li1-xFex)OHFeSe: a bridge between iron selenide and arsenide superconductors

Previous experimental results have shown important differences between iron selenide and arsenide superconductors, which seem to suggest that the high temperature superconductivity in these two subgroups of iron-based family may arise from different electronic ground states. Here, we report the complete phase diagram of a newly synthesized superconducting (SC) system (Li1-xFex)OHFeSe with a similar structure to FeAs-based superconductors. In the non-SC samples, an antiferromagnetic (AFM) spin-density-wave (SDW) transition occurs at ~127 K. This is the first example to demonstrate such an SDW phase in FeSe-based superconductor system. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) shows that a well-known sqrr(5) x sqrr(5) iron vacancy ordered state, resulting in an AFM order at ~ 500K in AyFe2-xSe2 (A = metal ions) superconductor system, is absent in both non-SC and SC samples, but a unique superstructure with a modulation wave vector q=1/2(1, 1, 0), identical to that seen in SC phase of KyFe2-xSe2, is dominant in the optimal SC sample (with an SC transition temperature Tc = 40 K). Hence, we conclude that the high-Tc superconductivity in (Li1-xFex)OHFeSe stems from the similarly weak AFM fluctuations as FeAs-based superconductors, suggesting a universal physical picture for both iron selenide and arsenide superconductors.

Hot pressing to enhance the transport Jc of Sr0.6K0.4Fe2As2 superconducting tapes

High-performance Sr0.6K0.4Fe2As2 (Sr-122) tapes have been successfully fabricated using hot pressing (HP) process. The effect of HP temperatures (850-925 C) on the c-axis texture, resistivity, Vickers micro-hardness, microstructure and critical current properties has been systematically studied. Taking advantage of high degree of c-axis texture, well grain connectivity and and large concentration of strong-pinning defects, we are able to obtain an excellent Jc of 1.2x10^5 A/cm^2 at 4.2 K and 10 T for Sr-122 tapes. More importantly, the field dependence of Jc turns out to be very weak, such that in 14 T the Jc remains ~1.0x10^5 A/cm^2. These Jc values are the highest ever reported so far for iron-pnictide wires and tapes, achieving the level desired for practical applications. Our results clearly strengthen the position of iron-pnictide conductors as a competitor to the conventional and MgB2 superconductors for high field applications.

Clocking the anisotropic lattice dynamics of multi-walled carbon nanotubes by four-dimensional ultrafast transmission electron microscopy

Recent advances in the four-dimensional ultrafast transmission electron microscope (4D-UTEM) with combined spatial and temporal resolutions have made it possible to directly visualize structural dynamics of materials at the atomic level. Herein, we report on our development on a 4D-UTEM which can be operated properly on either the photo-emission or the thermionic mode. We demonstrate its ability to obtain sequences of snapshots with high spatial and temporal resolutions in the study of lattice dynamics of the multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). This investigation provides an atomic level description of remarkable anisotropic lattice dynamics at the picosecond timescales. Moreover, our UTEM measurements clearly reveal that distinguishable lattice relaxations appear in intra-tubular sheets on an ultrafast timescale of a few picoseconds and after then an evident lattice expansion along the radical direction. These anisotropic behaviors in the MWCNTs are considered arising from the variety of chemical bonding, i.e. the weak van der Waals bonding between the tubular planes and the strong covalent sp2-hybridized bonds in the tubular sheets.

Large linear magnetoresistance in Dirac semi-metal Cd3As2 with Fermi surfaces close to the Dirac points

We have investigated the magnetoresistive behavior of Dirac semi-metal Cd3As2 down to low temperatures and in high magnetic fields. A positive and linear magnetoresistance (LMR) as large as 3100% is observed in a magnetic field of 14 T, on high-quality single crystals of Cd3As2 with ultra-low electron density and large Lande g factor. Such a large LMR occurs when the magnetic field is applied perpendicular to both the current and the (100) surface, and when the temperature is low such that the thermal energy is smaller than the Zeeman splitting energy. Tilting the magnetic field or raising the temperature all degrade the LMR, leading to a less pronounced quadratic behavior. We propose that the phenomenon of LMR is related to the peculiar field-induced shifting/distortion of the helical electrons' Fermi surfaces in momentum space.

Realization of practical level current densities in Sr0.6K0.4Fe2As2 tape conductors for high-field applications

122 type pnictide superconductors are of particular interest for high-field applications because of their large upper critical fields Hc2 (> 100 T), low Hc2 anisotropy r (< 2), and high thin-film critical current densities Jc (> 1 MA/cm2 at 4.2 K). Successful magnet applications require fabrication of polycrystalline superconducting wires that exhibit large in-field Jc, which is limited by poor grain coupling and weak-link behavior at grain boundaries. Here we report our recent achievement in the developing Sr0.6K0.4Fe2As2 tapes with transport Jc up to 0.1 MA/cm2 at 10 T and 4.2 K. This value is by far the highest ever recorded for iron based superconducting wires and has surpassed the threshold for practical application for the first time. The synergy effects of enhanced grain connectivity, alleviation of the weak-link behavior at grain boundaries, and the strong intrinsic pinning characteristics led to the superior Jc performance exhibited in our samples. This advanced Jc result opens up the possibility for iron-pnictide superconducting wires to win the race in high-field magnet applications.

The role of 245 phase in alkaline iron selenide superconductors revealed by high pressure studies

Here we show that a pressure of about 8 GPa suppresses both the vacancy order and the insulating phase, and a further increase of the pressure to about 18 GPa induces a second transition or crossover. No superconductivity has been found in compressed insulating 245 phase. The metallic phase in the intermediate pressure range has a distinct behavior in the transport property, which is also observed in the superconducting sample. We interpret this intermediate metal as an orbital selective Mott phase (OSMP). Our results suggest that the OSMP provides the physical pathway connecting the insulating and superconducting phases of these iron selenide materials.

Strong Coupling of the Iron-Quadrupole and Anion-Dipole Polarizations in Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$

We use a quantitative convergent beam electron diffraction (CBED) based method to image the valence electron density distribution in Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$. We show a remarkable increase in both the charge quadrupole of the Fe cations and the charge dipole of the arsenic anions upon Co doping from $x=0$ ($T_c=0$ K) to $x=0.1$ ($T_c=22.5$ K). Our data suggest that an unexpected electronic correlation effect, namely strong coupling of Fe orbital fluctuation and anion electronic polarization, is present in iron-based superconductors.

Pressure-induced Superconductivity in Crystalline Boron Nanowires

We report high-pressure induced superconductivity in boron nanowires (BNWs) with rhombohedral crystal structure. Obviously different from bulk rhombohedral boron, these BNWs show a semiconductor-metal transition at much lower pressure than bulk boron. Also, we found these BNWs become superconductors with Tc=1.5 K at 84 GPa, at the pressure of which bulk boron is still a semiconductor, via in-situ resistance measurements in a diamond anvil cell. With increasing pressure, Tc of the BNWs increases. The occurrence of superconductivity in the BNWs at a pressure as low as 84 GPa probably arises from the size effect.

Electron energy-loss spectroscopy and ab initio electronic structure of the LaOFeP superconductor

The electronic band structures of the LaOFeP superconductor have been calculated theoretically by the first principles method and measured experimentally by electron energy loss spectroscopy. The calculations indicate that the Fe atom in LaOFeP crystal shows a weak magnetic moment and does not form a long-range magnetic ordering. Band structure, Fermi surfaces and fluorine-doping effects are also analyzed based on the data of the density functional theory. The fine structures of the EELS data have been carefully examined in both the low loss energy region and the core losses region (O K, Fe L2,3, and La M4,5). A slight bump edge at 44 eV shows notable orientation-dependence: it can be observed in the low loss EELS spectra with q parallel to c, but becomes almost invisible in the q vertical to c spectra. Annealing experiments indicate that low oxygen pressure favors the appearance of superconductivity in LaOFeP, this fact is also confirmed by the changes of Fe L2,3 and O K excitation edges in the experimental EELS data.

Transmission-electron-microscopy study of charge-stripe order in La(1.725)Sr(0.275)NiO(4)

We characterize the local structure and correlations of charge stripes in La(1.725)Sr(0.275)NiO(4) using transmission-electron microscopy. We present direct evidence that the stripe modulation is indeed one-dimensional within each NiO(2) plane. Furthermore, we show that individual stripes tend to be either site-centered or bond-centered, with a bias towards the former. The spacing between stripes often fluctuates about the mean, contributing to a certain degree of frustration of the approximate body-centered stacking along the c-axis. These results confirm ideas inferred from previous neutron-diffraction measurements on doped nickelates, and demonstrate that charge-stripe order is quite different from the conventional concept of charge-density-wave order.
