Dual-Layer Semantic-Spatial Belief Mapping for Aerial Object Goal Navigation

Aerial Object Goal Navigation (ObjectNav) requires an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) to locate a described target in an unknown outdoor environment using onboard visual observations. Vision-language models (VLMs) can interpret open-ended target descriptions and visual observations, but their frame-level outputs are often noisy, sparse, and spatially transient. We propose AeroBelief, a dual-layer semantic-spatial belief mapping framework that transforms transient VLM observations into persistent spatial guidance. It separates broad contextual plausibility from target-specific evidence: an intuition layer accumulates scene-level semantic cues for exploration, while an evidence layer preserves qualified target-specific observations for approach and confirmation. Evidence-gated fusion combines the two layers into spatial belief hotspots. We further introduce object-conditioned visual reasoning with conservative evidence qualification to improve observation reliability before spatial accumulation. In parallel, egocentric regional guidance converts quadtree coverage into UAV-centered, yaw-aligned directional proposals and stabilizes them through temporal commitment. Its regional scoring is independent of semantic belief values, maintaining exploration pressure and reducing repeated low-gain search. Experiments on the UAV-ON benchmark show that AeroBelief achieves the best reported overall SR, OSR, and SPL among the compared methods, reaching 21.61%, 35.57%, and 10.62, respectively. These results support the effectiveness of persistent semantic-spatial belief, conservative evidence qualification, and temporally stable regional guidance for aerial ObjectNav.

UAV-ON: A Benchmark for Open-World Object Goal Navigation with Aerial Agents

Aerial navigation is a fundamental yet underexplored capability in embodied intelligence, enabling agents to operate in large-scale, unstructured environments where traditional navigation paradigms fall short. However, most existing research follows the Vision-and-Language Navigation (VLN) paradigm, which heavily depends on sequential linguistic instructions, limiting its scalability and autonomy. To address this gap, we introduce UAV-ON, a benchmark for large-scale Object Goal Navigation (ObjectNav) by aerial agents in open-world environments, where agents operate based on high-level semantic goals without relying on detailed instructional guidance as in VLN. UAV-ON comprises 14 high-fidelity Unreal Engine environments with diverse semantic regions and complex spatial layouts, covering urban, natural, and mixed-use settings. It defines 1270 annotated target objects, each characterized by an instance-level instruction that encodes category, physical footprint, and visual descriptors, allowing grounded reasoning. These instructions serve as semantic goals, introducing realistic ambiguity and complex reasoning challenges for aerial agents. To evaluate the benchmark, we implement several baseline methods, including Aerial ObjectNav Agent (AOA), a modular policy that integrates instruction semantics with egocentric observations for long-horizon, goal-directed exploration. Empirical results show that all baselines struggle in this setting, highlighting the compounded challenges of aerial navigation and semantic goal grounding. UAV-ON aims to advance research on scalable UAV autonomy driven by semantic goal descriptions in complex real-world environments.

APEX: A Decoupled Memory-based Explorer for Asynchronous Aerial Object Goal Navigation

Aerial Object Goal Navigation, a challenging frontier in Embodied AI, requires an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) agent to autonomously explore, reason, and identify a specific target using only visual perception and language description. However, existing methods struggle with the memorization of complex spatial representations in aerial environments, reliable and interpretable action decision-making, and inefficient exploration and information gathering. To address these challenges, we introduce \textbf{APEX} (Aerial Parallel Explorer), a novel hierarchical agent designed for efficient exploration and target acquisition in complex aerial settings. APEX is built upon a modular, three-part architecture: 1) Dynamic Spatio-Semantic Mapping Memory, which leverages the zero-shot capability of a Vision-Language Model (VLM) to dynamically construct high-resolution 3D Attraction, Exploration, and Obstacle maps, serving as an interpretable memory mechanism. 2) Action Decision Module, trained with reinforcement learning, which translates this rich spatial understanding into a fine-grained and robust control policy. 3) Target Grounding Module, which employs an open-vocabulary detector to achieve definitive and generalizable target identification. All these components are integrated into a hierarchical, asynchronous, and parallel framework, effectively bypassing the VLM's inference latency and boosting the agent's proactivity in exploration. Extensive experiments show that APEX outperforms the previous state of the art by +4.2\% SR and +2.8\% SPL on challenging UAV-ON benchmarks, demonstrating its superior efficiency and the effectiveness of its hierarchical asynchronous design. Generalization Gap in Data Augmentation: Insights from Illumination

In the field of computer vision, data augmentation is widely used to enrich the feature complexity of training datasets with deep learning techniques. However, regarding the generalization capabilities of models, the difference in artificial features generated by data augmentation and natural visual features has not been fully revealed. This study introduces the concept of "visual representation variables" to define the possible visual variations in a task as a joint distribution of these variables. We focus on the visual representation variable "illumination", by simulating its distribution degradation and examining how data augmentation techniques enhance model performance on a classification task. Our goal is to investigate the differences in generalization between models trained with augmented data and those trained under real-world illumination conditions. Results indicate that after applying various data augmentation methods, model performance has significantly improved. Yet, a noticeable generalization gap still exists after utilizing various data augmentation methods, emphasizing the critical role of feature diversity in the training set for enhancing model generalization.

Staged Depthwise Correlation and Feature Fusion for Siamese Object Tracking

In this work, we propose a novel staged depthwise correlation and feature fusion network, named DCFFNet, to further optimize the feature extraction for visual tracking. We build our deep tracker upon a siamese network architecture, which is offline trained from scratch on multiple large-scale datasets in an end-to-end manner. The model contains a core component, that is, depthwise correlation and feature fusion module (correlation-fusion module), which facilitates model to learn a set of optimal weights for a specific object by utilizing ensembles of multi-level features from lower and higher layers and multi-channel semantics on the same layer. We combine the modified ResNet-50 with the proposed correlation-fusion layer to constitute the feature extractor of our model. In training process, we find the training of model become more stable, that benifits from the correlation-fusion module. For comprehensive evaluations of performance, we implement our tracker on the popular benchmarks, including OTB100, VOT2018 and LaSOT. Extensive experiment results demonstrate that our proposed method achieves favorably competitive performance against many leading trackers in terms of accuracy and precision, while satisfying the real-time requirements of applications.
