The Potential of Haptic Foundation Models

Despite the success of foundation models in language and vision, their expansion into embodied AI is bottlenecked by a lack of generalized touch sensing. This limitation is especially relevant to consumer electronics, where smartphones, wearables, VR controllers, home robots, and health monitoring devices require safe and adaptive physical interaction. Constrained by hardware heterogeneity and the necessity of active physical data collection, current haptic models remain rigidly task-specific. To overcome these limitations, this article explores the transformative potential and developmental trajectory of Haptic Foundation Models (HFMs). We detail the paradigm shift required to transition from passive Large Language Models and Vision Language Models into active HFMs across four core dimensions: action coupling, physical dynamical representation space, continuous time-series data granularity, and action-conditioned future state prediction. Furthermore, we synthesize existing large-scale tactile datasets and benchmark UniTouch, AnyTouch, T3, and Sparsh on TacBench for force estimation, slip detection, and relative pose estimation.

Finite de Finetti theorems for free easy quantum groups

We prove various finite de Finetti theorems for non-commutative distributions which are invariant under the free easy quantum group actions. This complements the free de Finetti theorems by Banica, Curran and Speicher, which mostly focus on infinite sequences. We also discuss some refined results for the infinite setting.

6D Movable Antenna Enhanced Cell-free MIMO: Two-timescale Decentralized Beamforming and Antenna Movement Optimization

This paper investigates a six-dimensional movable antenna (6DMA)-aided cell-free multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication system. In this system, each distributed access point (AP) can flexibly adjust its array orientation and antenna positions to adapt to spatial channel variations and enhance communication performance. However, frequent antenna movements and centralized beamforming based on global instantaneous channel state information (CSI) sharing among APs entail extremely high signal processing delay and system overhead, which is difficult to be practically implemented in high-mobility scenarios with short channel coherence time. To address these practical implementation challenges and improve scalability, a two-timescale decentralized optimization framework is proposed in this paper to jointly design the beamformer, antenna positions, and array orientations. In the short timescale, each AP updates its receive beamformer based on local instantaneous CSI and global statistical CSI. In the long timescale, the central processing unit optimizes the antenna positions and array orientations at all APs based on global statistical CSI to maximize the ergodic sum rate of all users. The resulting optimization problem is non-convex and involves highly coupled variables, thus posing significant challenges for obtaining efficient solutions. To address this problem, a constrained stochastic successive convex approximation algorithm is developed. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed 6DMA-aided cell-free system with decentralized beamforming significantly outperforms other antenna movement schemes with less flexibility and even achieves a performance comparable to that of the centralized beamforming benchmark.

Intra-symbol Differential Amplitude Shift Keying-aided Blind Detector for Ambient Backscatter Communication Systems

Ambient backscatter communications (AmBC) are a promising technology for addressing the energy consumption challenge in wireless communications through the reflection or absorption of surrounding radio frequency (RF) signals. However, it grapples with the intricacies of ambient RF signal and the round-trip path loss. For traditional detectors, the incorporation of pilot sequences results in a reduction in spectral efficiency. Furthermore, traditional energy-based detectors are inherently susceptible to a notable error floor issue, attributed to the co-channel direct link interference (DLI). Consequently, this paper proposes a blind symbol detector without the prior knowledge of the channel state information, signal variance, and noise variance. By leveraging the intra-symbol differential amplitude shift keying (IDASK) scheme, this detector effectively redirects the majority of the DLI energy towards the largest eigenvalue of the received sample covariance matrix, thereby utilizing the second largest eigenvalue for efficient symbol detection. In addition, this paper conducts theoretical performance analyses of the proposed detector in terms of the false alarm probability, missed detection probability, and the bit-error rate (BER) lower bound. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed blind detector exhibits a significant enhancement in symbol detection performance compared to its traditional counterparts.

Robust Transceiver Design for Covert Integrated Sensing and Communications With Imperfect CSI

We propose a robust transceiver design for a covert integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) system with imperfect channel state information (CSI). Considering both bounded and probabilistic CSI error models, we formulate worst-case and outage-constrained robust optimization problems of joint trasceiver beamforming and radar waveform design to balance the radar performance of multiple targets while ensuring communications performance and covertness of the system. The optimization problems are challenging due to the non-convexity arising from the semi-infinite constraints (SICs) and the coupled transceiver variables. In an effort to tackle the former difficulty, S-procedure and Bernstein-type inequality are introduced for converting the SICs into finite convex linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) and second-order cone constraints. A robust alternating optimization framework referred to alternating double-checking is developed for decoupling the transceiver design problem into feasibility-checking transmitter- and receiver-side subproblems, transforming the rank-one constraints into a set of LMIs, and verifying the feasibility of beamforming by invoking the matrix-lifting scheme. Numerical results are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed algorithm in improving the performance of covert ISAC systems.

Sitting Posture Recognition Using a Spiking Neural Network

To increase the quality of citizens' lives, we designed a personalized smart chair system to recognize sitting behaviors. The system can receive surface pressure data from the designed sensor and provide feedback for guiding the user towards proper sitting postures. We used a liquid state machine and a logistic regression classifier to construct a spiking neural network for classifying 15 sitting postures. To allow this system to read our pressure data into the spiking neurons, we designed an algorithm to encode map-like data into cosine-rank sparsity data. The experimental results consisting of 15 sitting postures from 19 participants show that the prediction precision of our SNN is 88.52%.

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface With Energy Harvesting Assisted Cooperative Ambient Backscatter Communications

The performance of cooperative ambient backscatter communications (CABC) can be enhanced by employing reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) to assist backscatter transmitters. Since the RIS power consumption is a non-negligible issue, we consider a RIS assisted CABC system where the RIS with energy harvesting circuit can not only reflect signal but also harvest wireless energy. We study a transmission design problem to minimize the RIS power consumption with the quality of service constraints for both active and backscatter transmissions. The optimization problem is a mixed-integer non-convex programming problem which is NP-hard. To tackle it, an algorithm is proposed by employing the block coordinate descent, semidefinite relaxation and alternating direction method of multipliers techniques. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Exploration of Artificial Intelligence-oriented Power System Dynamic Simulators

With the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI), it is foreseeable that the accuracy and efficiency of dynamic analysis for future power system will be greatly improved by the integration of dynamic simulators and AI. To explore the interaction mechanism of power system dynamic simulations and AI, a general design of an AI-oriented power system dynamic simulator is proposed, which consists of a high-performance simulator with neural network supportability and flexible external and internal application programming interfaces (APIs). With the support of APIs, simulation-assisted AI and AI-assisted simulation form a comprehensive interaction mechanism between power system dynamic simulations and AI. A prototype of this design is implemented and made public based on a highly efficient electromechanical simulator. Tests of this prototype are carried out under four scenarios including sample generation, AI-based stability prediction, data-driven dynamic component modeling, and AI-aided stability control, which prove the validity, flexibility, and efficiency of the design and implementation of the AI-oriented power system dynamic simulator.

UAV-Enabled Cooperative Jamming for Covert Communications

This work employs an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) as a jammer to aid a covert communication from a transmitter Alice to a receiver Bob, where the UAV transmits artificial noise (AN) with random power to deliberately create interference to a warden Willie. In the considered system, the UAV's trajectory is critical to the covert communication performance, since the AN transmitted by the UAV also generates interference to Bob. To maximize the system performance, we formulate an optimization problem to jointly design the UAV's trajectory and Alice's transmit power. The formulated optimization problem is non-convex and is normally solved by a conventional iterative (CI) method, which requires multiple approximations based on Taylor expansions and an initialization on the UAV's trajectory. In order to eliminate these requirements, this work, for the first time, develops a geometric (GM) method to solve the optimization problem. By analyzing the covertness constraint, the GM method decouples the joint optimization into optimizing the UAV's trajectory and Alice's transmit power separately. Our examination shows that the GM method can significantly outperform the CI method in terms of achieving a higher average covert rate and the complexity of the GM method is lower than that of the CI method.

Performance Analysis for Covert Communications Under Faster-than-Nyquist Signaling

In this letter, we analyze the performance of covert communications under faster-than-Nyquist (FTN) signaling in the Rayleigh block fading channel. Both Bayesian criterion- and Kullback-Leibler (KL) divergence-based covertness constraints are considered. Especially, for KL divergence-based one, we prove that both the maximum transmit power and covert rate under FTN signaling are higher than those under Nyquist signaling. Numerical results coincide with our analysis and validate the advantages of FTN signaling to realize covert data transmission.

A Closed-Loop UL Power Control Scheme for Interference Mitigation in Dynamic TD-LTE Systems

The TD-LTE system is envisaged to adopt dynamic time division duplexing (TDD) transmissions for small cells to adapt their communication service to the fast variation of downlink (DL) and uplink (UL) traffic demands. However, different DL/UL directions for the same subframe in adjacent cells will result in new destructive interference components, i.e., eNB-to-eNB and UE-to-UE, with levels that can significantly differ from one subframe to another. In this paper, a feasible UL power control mechanism is proposed to manage eNB-to-eNB interference, where different UL power control parameters are set based on different interference level. We consider the geometric location information and the subframe set selection process about adjacent eNBs when the interference level is estimated. The performance of the proposed scheme is evaluated through system level simulations and it is shown that the scheme can achieve preferable improvement in terms of UL average and 5%-ile packet throughputs compared with the original scheme without power control. Also, the UE-to-UE interference is not worse when the UE transmit power become higher.
