Flexible exponent of geometric 3-manifolds and Legendrian maps of Seifert spaces

A classical question in quantitative topology is to bound the mapping degree $\operatorname{deg}(f)$ in terms of its Lipchitz constant $\operatorname{Lip}(f)$. For a closed, oriented manifold $M$, the flexible exponent $α(M)$ is the infimum of $α\geq 0$ such that $|\operatorname{deg} f|\leq C(\operatorname{Lip} f)^α$ holds for all differentiable map $f:M\to M$. The flexible exponent measures how effectively a manifold can wrap itself through self-maps. For geometric 3-manifolds $M$ in the sense of Thurston, we give the complete result for $α(M)$: \[ α(M)= \begin{cases} 3 & M \text{ modeled on } \mathbb S^3,\mathbb E^3,\mathbb S^2\times\mathbb E^1,\\ \frac83 & M \text{ modeled on Nil},\\ 2 & M \text{ modeled on Sol},\\ 1 & M \text{ modeled on }\mathbb H^2\times\mathbb E^1,\\ 0 & M \text{ modeled on } \mathbb H^3,\widetilde{\rm SL_2}. \end{cases} \] To prove $α(M)=8/3$ for Nil 3-manifold $M$, we construct the so-called Legendrian map: a smooth self-map $f: M\to M$ such that $f$ is homotopic to the identity and $f$ maps all $S^1$-fibers into the orthogonal contact plane field simultaneously. Moreover, we prove that any Legendrian map must not be a diffeomorphism.

Universal $L^2$-torsion and sutured decomposition for 3-manifolds

Given an admissible 3-manifold $M$ and a cohomology class $ϕ\in H^1(M;\mathbb R)$, we prove that the universal $L^2$-torsion of $M$ detects the fiberedness of $ϕ$, except when $M$ is a closed graph manifold that admits no non-positively curved metric. We further extend this invariant to sutured 3-manifolds and derive a decomposition formula for taut sutured decompositions. Moreover, we show that a taut sutured manifold is a product if and only if its universal $L^2$-torsion is trivial. Our methods are based on a detailed study of the leading term map over Linnell's skew field. As an application, we apply the theory to homomorphisms between finitely generated free groups, which enables explicit computations of the invariant for sutured handlebodies.

Guts determine the leading coefficients of $L^2$-Alexander torsions

For 3-manifolds, the leading coefficient of the $L^2$-Alexander torsion is a numerical invariant of a real first cohomology class. We show that the leading coefficient equals the relative $L^2$-torsion of the manifold cut up along a norm-minimizing surface dual to the cohomology class. Furthermore, the leading coefficient equals the relative $L^2$-torsion of the guts associated to the cohomology class. Finally, we prove that the leading coefficient is constant on any open Thurston cone. The main ingredients are a new criterion for the convergence of Fuglede-Kadison determinants and the work of Agol and Zhang on guts of 3-manifolds.

On the positivity of twisted $L^2$-torsion for 3-manifolds

For any compact orientable irreducible 3-manifold $N$ with empty or incompressible toral boundary, the twisted $L^2$-torsion is a non-negative function defined on the representation variety $\operatorname{Hom}(π_1(N),\operatorname{SL}(n,\mathbb C))$. The paper shows that if $N$ has infinite fundamental group, then the $L^2$-torsion function is strictly positive. Moreover, this torsion function is continuous when restricted to the subvariety of upper triangular representations.
