Accelerating Vision Transformers Based on Heterogeneous Attention Patterns

Recently, Vision Transformers (ViTs) have attracted a lot of attention in the field of computer vision. Generally, the powerful representative capacity of ViTs mainly benefits from the self-attention mechanism, which has a high computation complexity. To accelerate ViTs, we propose an integrated compression pipeline based on observed heterogeneous attention patterns across layers. On one hand, different images share more similar attention patterns in early layers than later layers, indicating that the dynamic query-by-key self-attention matrix may be replaced with a static self-attention matrix in early layers. Then, we propose a dynamic-guided static self-attention (DGSSA) method where the matrix inherits self-attention information from the replaced dynamic self-attention to effectively improve the feature representation ability of ViTs. On the other hand, the attention maps have more low-rank patterns, which reflect token redundancy, in later layers than early layers. In a view of linear dimension reduction, we further propose a method of global aggregation pyramid (GLAD) to reduce the number of tokens in later layers of ViTs, such as Deit. Experimentally, the integrated compression pipeline of DGSSA and GLAD can accelerate up to 121% run-time throughput compared with DeiT, which surpasses all SOTA approaches.

TaiChi Action Capture and Performance Analysis with Multi-view RGB Cameras

Recent advances in computer vision and deep learning have influenced the field of sports performance analysis for researchers to track and reconstruct freely moving humans without any marker attachment. However, there are few works for vision-based motion capture and intelligent analysis for professional TaiChi movement. In this paper, we propose a framework for TaiChi performance capture and analysis with multi-view geometry and artificial intelligence technology. The main innovative work is as follows: 1) A multi-camera system suitable for TaiChi motion capture is built and the multi-view TaiChi data is collected and processed; 2) A combination of traditional visual method and implicit neural radiance field is proposed to achieve sparse 3D skeleton fusion and dense 3D surface reconstruction. 3) The normalization modeling of movement sequences is carried out based on motion transfer, so as to realize TaiChi performance analysis for different groups. We have carried out evaluation experiments, and the experimental results have shown the efficiency of our method.

A Badminton Recognition and Tracking System Based on Context Multi-feature Fusion

Ball recognition and tracking have traditionally been the main focus of computer vision researchers as a crucial component of sports video analysis. The difficulties, such as the small ball size, blurry appearance, quick movements, and so on, prevent many classic methods from performing well on ball detection and tracking. In this paper, we present a method for detecting and tracking badminton balls. According to the characteristics of different ball speeds, two trajectory clip trackers are designed based on different rules to capture the correct trajectory of the ball. Meanwhile, combining contextual information, two rounds of detection from coarse-grained to fine-grained are used to solve the challenges encountered in badminton detection. The experimental results show that the precision, recall, and F1-measure of our method, reach 100%, 72.6% and 84.1% with the data without occlusion, respectively.

Learning Motion-Robust Remote Photoplethysmography through Arbitrary Resolution Videos

Remote photoplethysmography (rPPG) enables non-contact heart rate (HR) estimation from facial videos which gives significant convenience compared with traditional contact-based measurements. In the real-world long-term health monitoring scenario, the distance of the participants and their head movements usually vary by time, resulting in the inaccurate rPPG measurement due to the varying face resolution and complex motion artifacts. Different from the previous rPPG models designed for a constant distance between camera and participants, in this paper, we propose two plug-and-play blocks (i.e., physiological signal feature extraction block (PFE) and temporal face alignment block (TFA)) to alleviate the degradation of changing distance and head motion. On one side, guided with representative-area information, PFE adaptively encodes the arbitrary resolution facial frames to the fixed-resolution facial structure features. On the other side, leveraging the estimated optical flow, TFA is able to counteract the rPPG signal confusion caused by the head movement thus benefit the motion-robust rPPG signal recovery. Besides, we also train the model with a cross-resolution constraint using a two-stream dual-resolution framework, which further helps PFE learn resolution-robust facial rPPG features. Extensive experiments on three benchmark datasets (UBFC-rPPG, COHFACE and PURE) demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed method. One highlight is that with PFE and TFA, the off-the-shelf spatio-temporal rPPG models can predict more robust rPPG signals under both varying face resolution and severe head movement scenarios. Modeling COVID-19 vaccine-induced immunological memory development and its links to antibody level and infectiousness

COVID-19 vaccines have proven to be effective against SARS-CoV-2 infection. However, the dynamics of vaccine-induced immunological memory development and neutralizing antibodies generation are not fully understood, limiting vaccine development and vaccination regimen determination. Herein, we constructed a mathematical model to characterize the vaccine-induced immune response based on fitting the viral infection and vaccination datasets. With the example of CoronaVac, we revealed the association between vaccine-induced immunological memory development and neutralizing antibody levels. The establishment of the intact immunological memory requires more than 6 months after the first and second doses, after that a booster shot can induce high levels neutralizing antibodies. By introducing the maximum viral load and recovery time after viral infection, we quantitatively studied the protective effect of vaccines against viral infection. Accordingly, we optimized the vaccination regimen, including dose and vaccination timing, and predicted the effect of the fourth dose. Last, by combining the viral transmission model, we showed the suppression of virus transmission by vaccination, which may be instructive for the development of public health policies.

Voltage-Based State of Charge Correction at Charge-End

A voltage-based method is proposed to correct battery pack state of charge (SOC) estimation at the charge-end. Two main characteristics make the charge-end time span a good opportunity to correct SOC estimation: first, it is easy to detect when the battery is at the last stage of charging because the charging profile is known to the BMS designer and also during the charge-end time span the amount of current is low, and the terminal voltage of the battery cells are high; second, as the battery reaches the charge-end stage, we know that the true SOC is approaching to 100%. This paper presents a method to utilize these important features to correct the SOC estimation error. Using a voltage threshold method, the algorithm detects when the battery is close to the charge-end to activate the charge-end SOC correction strategy. Once activated, the strategy corrects the SOC using the maximum cell voltage to guarantee that SOC is 100% when charging is complete. The amount of correction is a function of maximum cell voltage and the charge current C-rate.

In this research, we consider the problem of verifying user identity based on keystroke dynamics obtained from free-text. We employ a novel feature engineering method that generates image-like transition matrices. For this image-like feature, a convolution neural network (CNN) with cutout achieves the best results. A hybrid model consisting of a CNN and a recurrent neural network (RNN) is also shown to outperform previous research in this field.

Data-driven Thermal Anomaly Detection for Batteries using Unsupervised Shape Clustering

For electric vehicles (EV) and energy storage (ES) batteries, thermal runaway is a critical issue as it can lead to uncontrollable fires or even explosions. Thermal anomaly detection can identify problematic battery packs that may eventually undergo thermal runaway. However, there are common challenges like data unavailability, environment and configuration variations, and battery aging. We propose a data-driven method to detect battery thermal anomaly based on comparing shape-similarity between thermal measurements. Based on their shapes, the measurements are continuously being grouped into different clusters. Anomaly is detected by monitoring deviations within the clusters. Unlike model-based or other data-driven methods, the proposed method is robust to data loss and requires minimal reference data for different pack configurations. As the initial experimental results show, the method not only can be more accurate than the onboard BMS and but also can detect unforeseen anomalies at the early stage.

Universal co-existence of photovoltaics and ferroelectricity from two-dimensional 3R bilayer BX (X=P, As, Sb)

The intertwined ferroelectricity and photovoltaics in two-dimensional (2D) materials will enable the favorable improvement and control of photovoltaic preformances. In this paper, we take 2D 3R bilayer BX (X=P, As, Sb) as model systems to study the photovoltaic characteristics of intrinsic 2D out-of-plane (OOP) ferroelectric material, and try to explore a strategy to regulate the photoelectric properties by changing the strength of ferroelectric polarization. Due to the spatial inversion symmetry broken caused by special 3R stacking, spontaneous OOP ferroelectric polarization will appear in the 3R bilayer BX, which can be swichable through a specific interlayer sliding. The OOP ferroelectricity leads to charge transfer between layers, realizes efficient spatial separation between holes and electrons, and forms the characteristics of type-II band alignment. Moreover, due to perfect lattice match on account of two identical layers, the 3R bilayer BX is more stable and easy to realize in experiments than most of traditional 2D heterostructures made up of different materials. The 3R bilayer BX shows moderate band gap, ultra-high carrier mobility and efficient optical absorption, and its nano-devices present large photocurrent, high photon responsivity and excellent external quantum efficiency. More importantly, all these photoelectric parameters depend on the intrinsic OOP ferroelectric strength. By changing the interlayer distance of bilayer BX, the ferroelectric polarization can be regulated effectively to achieve the optimal photoelectric performance. Finally, we emphasize the importance and universality of spatial inversion symmetry broken in layered materials beyond the 3R bilayer BX to realize the co-regulation of ferroelectric and photovoltaics.

Model-based cellular kinetic analysis of SARS-CoV-2 infection: different immune response modes and treatment strategies

Increasing number in global COVID-19 cases demands for mathematical model to analyze the interaction between the virus dynamics and the response of innate and adaptive immunity. Here, based on the assumption of a weak and delayed response of the innate and adaptive immunity in SARS-CoV-2 infection, we constructed a mathematical model to describe the dynamic processes of immune system. Integrating theoretical results with clinical COVID-19 patients' data, we classified the COVID-19 development processes into three typical modes of immune responses, correlated with the clinical classification of mild & moderate, severe and critical patients. We found that the immune efficacy (the ability of host to clear virus and kill infected cells) and the lymphocyte supply (the abundance and pool of naïve T and B cell) play important roles in the dynamic process and determine the clinical outcome, especially for the severe and critical patients. Furthermore, we put forward possible treatment strategies for the three typical modes of immune response. We hope our results can help to understand the dynamical mechanism of the immune response against SARS-CoV-2 infection, and to be useful for the treatment strategies and vaccine design.

The IQIYI System for Voice Conversion Challenge 2020

This paper presents the IQIYI voice conversion system (T24) for Voice Conversion 2020. In the competition, each target speaker has 70 sentences. We have built an end-to-end voice conversion system based on PPG. First, the ASR acoustic model calculates the BN feature, which represents the content-related information in the speech. Then the Mel feature is calculated through an improved prosody tacotron model. Finally, the Mel spectrum is converted to wav through an improved LPCNet. The evaluation results show that this system can achieve better voice conversion effects. In the case of using 16k rather than 24k sampling rate audio, the conversion result is relatively good in naturalness and similarity. Among them, our best results are in the similarity evaluation of the Task 2, the 2nd in the ASV-based objective evaluation and the 5th in the subjective evaluation.

Learning a Single Model with a Wide Range of Quality Factors for JPEG Image Artifacts Removal

Lossy compression brings artifacts into the compressed image and degrades the visual quality. In recent years, many compression artifacts removal methods based on convolutional neural network (CNN) have been developed with great success. However, these methods usually train a model based on one specific value or a small range of quality factors. Obviously, if the test image's quality factor does not match to the assumed value range, then degraded performance will be resulted. With this motivation and further consideration of practical usage, a highly robust compression artifacts removal network is proposed in this paper. Our proposed network is a single model approach that can be trained for handling a wide range of quality factors while consistently delivering superior or comparable image artifacts removal performance. To demonstrate, we focus on the JPEG compression with quality factors, ranging from 1 to 60. Note that a turnkey success of our proposed network lies in the novel utilization of the quantization tables as part of the training data. Furthermore, it has two branches in parallel---i.e., the restoration branch and the global branch. The former effectively removes the local artifacts, such as ringing artifacts removal. On the other hand, the latter extracts the global features of the entire image that provides highly instrumental image quality improvement, especially effective on dealing with the global artifacts, such as blocking, color shifting. Extensive experimental results performed on color and grayscale images have clearly demonstrated the effectiveness and efficacy of our proposed single-model approach on the removal of compression artifacts from the decoded image.

Synergistic Effect of One- and Two-dimensional Connected Coral-like Li$_{6.25}$Al$_{0.25}$La$_3$Zr$_2$O$_{12}$ in PEO-Based Composite Solid State Electrolyte

As one of the most promising next-generation energy storage device, lithium metal batteries have been extensively investigated. However, the poor safety issue and undesired lithium dendrites growth hinder the development of lithium metal batteries. The application of solid state electrolytes has attracted increasing attention as they can solve the safety issue and partly inhibit the growth of lithium dendrites. Polyethylene oxide (PEO)-based electrolytes are very promising due to their enhanced safety and excellent flexibility. However, PEO-based electrolytes suffer from low ionic conductivity at room temperature and can't effectively inhibit lithium dendrites at high temperature due to the intrinsic semi-crystalline properties and poor mechanical strength. In this work, a novel coral-like Li6.25Al0.25La3Zr2O12 (LALZO) is synthesized to use as an active ceramic filler in PEO. The PEO with LALZO coral (PLC) exhibits increased ionic conductivity and mechanical strength, which leads to the uniform deposition/stripping of lithium metal. The Li symmetric cells with PLC cycle for 1500 h without short circuit at 50 centidegree. The assembled LiFePO4/PLC/Li batteries display excellent cycling stability at both 60 and 50 centidegree. This work reveals that the electrochemical properties of organic and inorganic composite electrolyte can be effectively improved by tuning the microstructure of the filler, such as the coral-like LALZO architecture.

Slide Reduction, Revisited---Filling the Gaps in SVP Approximation

We show how to generalize Gama and Nguyen's slide reduction algorithm [STOC '08] for solving the approximate Shortest Vector Problem over lattices (SVP). As a result, we show the fastest provably correct algorithm for $δ$-approximate SVP for all approximation factors $n^{1/2+\varepsilon} \leq δ\leq n^{O(1)}$. This is the range of approximation factors most relevant for cryptography.
