The First Round Result from the TianQin-1 Satellite

The TianQin-1 satellite (TQ-1), which is the first technology demonstration satellite for the TianQin project, was launched on 20 December 2019. The first round of experiment had been carried out from 21 December 2019 until 1 April 2020. The residual acceleration of the satellite is found to be about $1\times10^{-10}~{\rm m}/{\rm s}^{2}/{\rm Hz}^{1/2}$ at $0.1~{\rm Hz}\,$ and about $5\times10^{-11}~{\rm m}/{\rm s}^{2}/{\rm Hz}^{1/2}$ at $0.05~{\rm Hz}\,$, measured by an inertial sensor with a sensitivity of $5\times10^{-12}~{\rm m}/{\rm s}^{2}/{\rm Hz}^{1/2}$ at $0.1~{\rm Hz}\,$. The micro-Newton thrusters has demonstrated a thrust resolution of $0.1~μ{\rm N}$ and a thrust noise of $0.3~μ{\rm N}/{\rm Hz}^{1/2}$ at $0.1~{\rm Hz}$. The residual noise of the satellite with drag-free control is $3\times10^{-9}~{\rm m}/{\rm s}^{2}/{\rm Hz}^{1/2}$ at $0.1~{\rm Hz}\,$. The noise level of the optical readout system is about $30~{\rm pm}/{\rm Hz}^{1/2}$ at $0.1~{\rm Hz}\,$. The temperature stability at temperature monitoring position is controlled to be about $\pm3~{\rm mK}$ per orbit, and the mismatch between the center-of-mass of the satellite and that of the test mass is measured with a precision of better than $0.1~{\rm mm}$.

Science with the TianQin observatory: Preliminary results on stellar-mass binary black holes

We study the prospect of using TianQin to detect stellar-mass binary black holes (SBBHs). We estimate the expected detection number as well as the precision of parameter estimation on SBBH inspirals, using five different population models. We note TianQin can possibly detect a few SBBH inspirals with signal to noise ratios greater than 12; lowering the threshold and combining multiple detectors can both boost the detection number. The source parameters can be recovered with good precision for most events above the detection threshold. For example, the precision of the merger time most likely occurs near 1s, making it possible to guide the detection of the ground-based detectors, the precision of the eccentricity $e_0$ most likely occurs near $10^{-4}$, making it possible to distinguish the formation channels, and the precision of the mass parameter is better than $10^{-6}$ in general and most likely occurs near $10^{-7}$. We note, in particular, that for a typical merger event, the error volume is likely to be small enough to contain only the host galaxy, which could greatly help in the study of gravitational wave cosmology and relevant studies through the multimessenger observation.

Constraining modified gravity with ringdown signals: an explicit example

An explicit example is found showing how a modified theory of gravity can be constrained with the ringdown signals from merger of binary black holes. This has been made possible by the fact that the modified gravitational theory considered in this work has an exact rotating black hole solution and that the corresponding quasi-normal modes can be calculated. With these, we obtain the possible constraint that can be placed on the parameter describing the deviation of this particular alternative theory from general relativity by using the detection of the ringdown signals from binary black holes's merger with future space-based gravitational wave detectors.

Science with the TianQin observatory: Preliminary results on testing the no-hair theorem with ringdown signals

We study the capability of the space-based gravitational wave observatory TianQin to test the no-hair theorem of General Relativity, using the ringdown signal from the coalescence of massive black hole binaries. We parameterize the ringdown signal by the four strongest quasinormal modes and estimate the signal to noise ratio for various source parameters. We consider constraints both from single detections and from all the events combined throughout the lifetime of the observatory, for different astrophysical models. We find that at the end of the mission, TianQin will have constrained deviations of the frequency and decay time of the dominant 22 mode from the general relativistic predictions to within 0.2% and 1.5% respectively, the frequencies of the subleading modes can be also constrained within 0.3%. We also find that TianQin and LISA are highly complementary, by virtue of their different frequency windows. Indeed, LISA can best perform ringdown tests for black hole masses in excess of $\sim 3\times 10^6 M_\odot$, while TianQin is best suited for lower masses.

Exact higher-spin symmetry in CFT: free fermion correlators from Vasiliev Theory

N-point correlation functions of conserved currents and weight-two scalar operators of the three-dimensional free fermion vector model are found as invariants of the higher-spin symmetry in four-dimensional AdS. These are the correlators of the unbroken Vasiliev higher-spin theory. The results extend the recent work arXiv:1210.7963 and are complementary to arXiv:1301.3123 where the correlators were computed entirely on the boundary.

Science with the TianQin observatory: Preliminary results on massive black hole binaries

We investigate the prospects of detecting gravitational waves from coalescing massive black hole binaries in the Universe with the TianQin observatory, a space-based gravitational wave interferometer proposed to be launched in the 2030s. To frame the scientific scope of the mission, in this paper, we carry out a preliminary estimation of the signal-to-noise ratio, detection rate and parameter estimation precision of massive black hole binaries detectable by TianQin. In order to make our results as robust as possible, we consider several models of the growth history of massive black holes, exploring the effect of some key astrophysical prescriptions as well the impact of the employed computational methods. In the most optimistic model, TianQin can detect as many as approximately 60 mergers per year. If TianQin detects a merger at redshift of 15, it will be capable of estimating its luminosity distance to within an accuracy of 10%; for a nearby event at redshift approximately 2, TianQin can issue early warnings 24 hours before coalescence, with a timing accuracy of around three hours and a sky localization ability of approximately 80 deg$^2$, thus enabling multi-messenger observations.

Hidden Conformal Symmetry for Vector Field on Various Black Hole Backgrounds

Hidden conformal symmetries of scalar field on various black hole backgrounds have been investigated for years, but whether those features holds for other fields are still open questions. Recently, with proper assumptions, Lunin achieves to the separation of variables for Maxwell equations on Kerr background. In this paper, with that equation, we find that hidden conformal symmetry appears at near region under low frequency limit. We also extended those results to vector field on Kerr-(A)dS and Kerr-NUT-(A)dS backgrounds, then hidden conformal symmetry also appears if we focusing on the near-horizon region at low frequency limit.

Extended Symmetries at Black Hole Horizons in Generic Dimensions

Recently it has been shown that there is asymptotic BMS-like symmetry associated with the near-horizon geometry of black holes in three and four dimensions. In this paper, we show that the presence of such BMS-like symmetry is a ubiquitous feature for black holes in generic dimensions. For black holes in $D$ dimensions, the symmetry contains 2 supertranslations and $D-2$ generalized superrotations. The superrotations are found to generate a generalized Witt-like algebra that was previously noticed in a rather different construction. In the case of stationary and axisymmetric black holes, we calculate the surface charges and show that the zero-mode charges are intimately related to the entropy and angular momenta of the black hole.

The extended Kerr-Schild approach to general relativity

We study in some detail the "extended Kerr-Schild" formulation of general relativity, which decomposes the gauge-independent degrees of freedom of a generic metric into two arbitrary functions and the choice of a flat background tetrad. We recast Einstein's equations and spacetime curvatures in the extended Kerr-Schild form and discuss their properties, illustrated with simple examples.

A note on the Kerr-Newman metric in five dimensions

We derive an ansatz for the five dimensional equal-rotation Kerr-Newman metric that contains two unknown functions. By solving for these functions through perturbation series, we find that the metric can be cast into the Kerr-Shild form in a background that is flat at the spatial infinity.

TianQin: a space-borne gravitational wave detector

TianQin is a proposal for a space-borne detector of gravitational waves in the millihertz frequencies. The experiment relies on a constellation of three drag-free spacecraft orbiting the Earth. Inter-spacecraft laser interferometry is used to monitor the distances between the test masses. The experiment is designed to be capable of detecting a signal with high confidence from a single source of gravitational waves within a few months of observing time. We describe the preliminary mission concept for TianQin, including the candidate source and experimental designs. We present estimates for the major constituents of the experiment's error budget and discuss the project's overall feasibility. Given the current level of technology readiness, we expect TianQin to be flown in the second half of the next decade.

Fundamentals of the TianQin mission

This talk adds more detail to the proposed TianQin mission \cite{TQ}. The response of TianQin to a binary source is an important problem for the experiment. Here we present the detail of the response function of an equal-arm Michelson interferometer to the gravitation waves of a binary source with a circular orbit.

Emergent Symmetry on Black Hole Horizons

For a stationary and axisymmetric black hole, there is a natural way to split the fields into a probe sector and a background sector. The equations of motion for the probe sector enjoy a significantly enhanced symmetry on the black hole horizon. The extended symmetry is conformal in four dimensions, while in higher dimensions it is much bigger. This puts conformal symmetry at the bottom of the ladder of symmetries that can arise on black hole horizons in generic dimensions.

Fluctuating Black Hole Horizons

In this paper we treat the black hole horizon as a physical boundary to the spacetime and study its dynamics following from the Gibbons-Hawking-York boundary term. Using the Kerr black hole as an example we derive an effective action that describes, in the large wave number limit, a massless Klein-Gordon field living on the average location of the boundary. Complete solutions can be found in the small rotation limit of the black hole. The formulation suggests that the boundary can be treated in the same way as any other matter contributions. In particular, the angular momentum of the boundary matches exactly with that of the black hole, suggesting an interesting possibility that all charges (including the entropy) of the black hole are carried by the boundary. Using this as input, we derive predictions on the Planck scale properties of the boundary.

On the General Kerr/CFT Correspondence in Arbitrary Dimensions

We study conformal symmetries on the horizon of a general stationary and axisymmetric black hole. We find that there exist physically reasonable boundary conditions that uniquely determine a set of symmetry generators, which form one copy of the Virasoro algebra. For extremal black holes, Cardy's formula reproduces exactly the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy.

Conformal Symmetries of the Einstein-Hilbert Action on Horizons of Stationary and Axisymmetric Black Holes

We suggest a way to study possible conformal symmetries on black hole horizons. We do this by carrying out a Kaluza-Klein like reduction of the Einstein-Hilbert action along the ignorable coordinates of stationary and axisymmetric black holes. Rigid diffeomorphism invariance of the $m$-ignorable coordinates then becomes a global $SL(m,R)$ gauge symmetry of the reduced action. Related to each non-vanishing angular velocity there is a particular $SL(2,R)$ subgroup, which can be extended to the Witt algebra on the black hole horizons. The classical Einstein-Hilbert action thus has $k$-copies of infinite dimensional conformal symmetries on a given black hole horizon, with $k$ being the number of non-vanishing angular velocities of the black hole.

The Spacetime of a Dirac Fermion

We present an approximate solution to the minimally coupled Einstein-Dirac equations. We interpret the solution as describing a massive fermion coexisting with its own gravitational field. The solution is axisymmetric but is time dependent. The metric approaches that of a flat spacetime at the spatial infinity. We have calculated a variety of conserved quantities in the system.

Spinor Fields and Symmetries of the Spacetime

In the background of a stationary black hole, the "conserved current" of a particular spinor field always approaches the null Killing vector on the horizon. What's more, when the black hole is asymptotically flat and when the coordinate system is asymptotically static, then the same current also approaches the time Killing vector at the spatial infinity. We test these results against various black hole solutions and no exception is found. The spinor field only needs to satisfy a very general and simple constraint.
