The global well-posedness and scattering for the $5$D defocusing conformal invariant NLW with radial initial data in a critical Besov space

In this paper, we obtain the global well-posedness and scattering for the radial solution to the defocusing conformal invariant nonlinear wave equation with initial data in the critical Besov space $\dot{B}^3_{1,1}\times\dot{B}^2_{1,1}(\mathbb{R}^5)$. This is the five dimensional analogue of \cite{dodson-2016}, which is the first result on the global well-posedness and scattering of the energy subcritical nonlinear wave equation without the uniform boundedness assumption on the critical Sobolev norms employed as a substitute of the missing conservation law with respect to the scaling invariance of the equation. The proof is based on exploiting the structure of the radial solution, developing the Strichartz-type estimates and incorporation of the strategy in \cite{dodson-2016}, where we also avoid a logarithm-type loss by employing the inhomogeneous Strichartz estimates.

Best of Both Worlds: Transferring Knowledge from Discriminative Learning to a Generative Visual Dialog Model

We present a novel training framework for neural sequence models, particularly for grounded dialog generation. The standard training paradigm for these models is maximum likelihood estimation (MLE), or minimizing the cross-entropy of the human responses. Across a variety of domains, a recurring problem with MLE trained generative neural dialog models (G) is that they tend to produce 'safe' and generic responses ("I don't know", "I can't tell"). In contrast, discriminative dialog models (D) that are trained to rank a list of candidate human responses outperform their generative counterparts; in terms of automatic metrics, diversity, and informativeness of the responses. However, D is not useful in practice since it cannot be deployed to have real conversations with users. Our work aims to achieve the best of both worlds -- the practical usefulness of G and the strong performance of D -- via knowledge transfer from D to G. Our primary contribution is an end-to-end trainable generative visual dialog model, where G receives gradients from D as a perceptual (not adversarial) loss of the sequence sampled from G. We leverage the recently proposed Gumbel-Softmax (GS) approximation to the discrete distribution -- specifically, an RNN augmented with a sequence of GS samplers, coupled with the straight-through gradient estimator to enable end-to-end differentiability. We also introduce a stronger encoder for visual dialog, and employ a self-attention mechanism for answer encoding along with a metric learning loss to aid D in better capturing semantic similarities in answer responses. Overall, our proposed model outperforms state-of-the-art on the VisDial dataset by a significant margin (2.67% on recall@10). The interctitical defocusing nonlinear Schrödinger equations with radial initial data in dimensions four and higher

In this paper, we consider the defocusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation in space dimensions $d\geq 4$. We prove that if $u$ is a radial solution which is \emph{priori} bounded in the critical Sobolev space, that is, $u\in L_t^\infty \dot{H}^{s_c}_x$, then $u$ is global and scatters. In practise, we use weighted Strichartz space adapted for our setting which ultimately helps us solve the problems in cases $d\geq 4$ and $0<s_c<\f{1}{2}$. The results in this paper extend the work of \cite[Comm. in PDEs, 40(2015), 265-308]{M3} to higher dimensions.

Quasi-neutral limit of Euler-Poisson system of compressible fluids coupled to a magnetic field

In this paper, we consider the quasi-neutral limit of a three dimensional Euler-Poisson system of compressible fluids coupled to a magnetic field. We prove that, as Debye length tends to zero, periodic initial-value problems of the model have unique smooth solutions existing in the time interval where the ideal incompressible magnetohydrodynamic equations has smooth solution. Meanwhile, it is proved that smooth solutions converge to solutions of incompressible magnetohydrodynamic equations with a sharp convergence rate in the process of quasi-neutral limit.

LR-GAN: Layered Recursive Generative Adversarial Networks for Image Generation

We present LR-GAN: an adversarial image generation model which takes scene structure and context into account. Unlike previous generative adversarial networks (GANs), the proposed GAN learns to generate image background and foregrounds separately and recursively, and stitch the foregrounds on the background in a contextually relevant manner to produce a complete natural image. For each foreground, the model learns to generate its appearance, shape and pose. The whole model is unsupervised, and is trained in an end-to-end manner with gradient descent methods. The experiments demonstrate that LR-GAN can generate more natural images with objects that are more human recognizable than DCGAN.

Blow-up of a critical Sobolev norm for energy-subcritical and energy-supercritical wave equations

This work concerns the semilinear wave equation in three space dimensions with a power-like nonlinearity which is greater than cubic, and not quintic (i.e. not energy-critical). We prove that a scale-invariant Sobolev norm of any non-scattering solution goes to infinity at the maximal time of existence. This gives a refinement on known results on energy-subcritical and energy-supercritical wave equation, with a unified proof. The proof relies on the channel of energy method, as in arXiv:1204.0031, in weighted scale-invariant Sobolev spaces which were introduced in arXiv:1506.00788. These spaces are local, thus adapted to finite speed of propagation, and related to a conservation law of the linear wave equation. We also construct the adapted profile decomposition.

Hierarchical Question-Image Co-Attention for Visual Question Answering

A number of recent works have proposed attention models for Visual Question Answering (VQA) that generate spatial maps highlighting image regions relevant to answering the question. In this paper, we argue that in addition to modeling "where to look" or visual attention, it is equally important to model "what words to listen to" or question attention. We present a novel co-attention model for VQA that jointly reasons about image and question attention. In addition, our model reasons about the question (and consequently the image via the co-attention mechanism) in a hierarchical fashion via a novel 1-dimensional convolution neural networks (CNN). Our model improves the state-of-the-art on the VQA dataset from 60.3% to 60.5%, and from 61.6% to 63.3% on the COCO-QA dataset. By using ResNet, the performance is further improved to 62.1% for VQA and 65.4% for COCO-QA.

Joint Unsupervised Learning of Deep Representations and Image Clusters

In this paper, we propose a recurrent framework for Joint Unsupervised LEarning (JULE) of deep representations and image clusters. In our framework, successive operations in a clustering algorithm are expressed as steps in a recurrent process, stacked on top of representations output by a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). During training, image clusters and representations are updated jointly: image clustering is conducted in the forward pass, while representation learning in the backward pass. Our key idea behind this framework is that good representations are beneficial to image clustering and clustering results provide supervisory signals to representation learning. By integrating two processes into a single model with a unified weighted triplet loss and optimizing it end-to-end, we can obtain not only more powerful representations, but also more precise image clusters. Extensive experiments show that our method outperforms the state-of-the-art on image clustering across a variety of image datasets. Moreover, the learned representations generalize well when transferred to other tasks.

An improved maximal inequality for 2D fractional order Schrödinger operators

The local maximal inequality for the Schrödinger operators of order $\a>1$ is shown to be bounded from $H^s(\R^2)$ to $L^2$ for any $s>\frac38$. This improves the previous result of Sjölin on the regularity of solutions to fractional order Schrödinger equations. Our method is inspired by Bourgain's argument in case of $\a=2$. The extension from $\a=2$ to general $\a>1$ confronts three essential obstacles: the lack of Lee's reduction lemma, the absence of the algebraic structure of the symbol and the inapplicable Galilean transformation in the deduction of the main theorem. We get around these difficulties by establishing a new reduction lemma at our disposal and analyzing all the possibilities in using the separateness of the segments to obtain the analogous bilinear $L^2-$estimates. To compensate the absence of Galilean invariance, we resort to Taylor's expansion for the phase function. The Bourgain-Guth inequality in \cite{ref Bourgain Guth} is also rebuilt to dominate the solution of fractional order Schrödinger equations.

On Wolff's $L^{\frac{5}{2}}-$Kakeya maximal inequality in $\R^3$

We reprove Wolff's $L^{\frac{5}2}-$ bound for the $\R^3-$Kakeya maximal function without appealing to the argument of induction on scales. The main ingredient in our proof is an adaptation of Sogge's strategy used in the work on Nikodym-type sets in curved spaces. Although the equivalence between these two type maximal functions is well known, our proof may shed light on some new geometric observations which is interesting in its own right.

Learn Convolutional Neural Network for Face Anti-Spoofing

Though having achieved some progresses, the hand-crafted texture features, e.g., LBP [23], LBP-TOP [11] are still unable to capture the most discriminative cues between genuine and fake faces. In this paper, instead of designing feature by ourselves, we rely on the deep convolutional neural network (CNN) to learn features of high discriminative ability in a supervised manner. Combined with some data pre-processing, the face anti-spoofing performance improves drastically. In the experiments, over 70% relative decrease of Half Total Error Rate (HTER) is achieved on two challenging datasets, CASIA [36] and REPLAY-ATTACK [7] compared with the state-of-the-art. Meanwhile, the experimental results from inter-tests between two datasets indicates CNN can obtain features with better generalization ability. Moreover, the nets trained using combined data from two datasets have less biases between two datasets.
