PASS: Exploiting Post-Activation Sparsity in Streaming Architectures for CNN Acceleration

With the ever-growing popularity of Artificial Intelligence, there is an increasing demand for more performant and efficient underlying hardware. Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) are a workload of particular importance, which achieve high accuracy in computer vision applications. Inside CNNs, a significant number of the post-activation values are zero, resulting in many redundant computations. Recent works have explored this post-activation sparsity on instruction-based CNN accelerators but not on streaming CNN accelerators, despite the fact that streaming architectures are considered the leading design methodology in terms of performance. In this paper, we highlight the challenges associated with exploiting post-activation sparsity for performance gains in streaming CNN accelerators, and demonstrate our approach to address them. Using a set of modern CNN benchmarks, our streaming sparse accelerators achieve 1.41x to 1.93x efficiency (GOP/s/DSP) compared to state-of-the-art instruction-based sparse accelerators.

ScaleHLS: A New Scalable High-Level Synthesis Framework on Multi-Level Intermediate Representation

High-level synthesis (HLS) has been widely adopted as it significantly improves the hardware design productivity and enables efficient design space exploration (DSE). Existing HLS tools are built using compiler infrastructures largely based on a single-level abstraction, such as LLVM. However, as HLS designs typically come with intrinsic structural or functional hierarchies, different HLS optimization problems are often better solved with different levels of abstractions. This paper proposes ScaleHLS, a new scalable and customizable HLS framework, on top of a multi-level compiler infrastructure called MLIR. ScaleHLS represents HLS designs at multiple representation levels and provides an HLS-dedicated analysis and transform library to solve the optimization problems at the suitable levels. Using this library, we provide a DSE engine to generate optimized HLS designs automatically. In addition, we develop an HLS C front-end and a C/C++ emission back-end to translate HLS designs into/from MLIR for enabling an end-to-end compilation flow. Experimental results show that, comparing to the baseline designs without manual directives insertion and code-rewriting, that are only optimized by Xilinx Vivado HLS, ScaleHLS improves the performances with amazing quality-of-results -- up to 768.1x better on computation kernel level programs and up to 3825.0x better on neural network models.

Phism: Polyhedral High-Level Synthesis in MLIR

Polyhedral optimisation, a methodology that views nested loops as polyhedra and searches for their optimal transformation regarding specific objectives (parallelism, locality, etc.), sounds promising for mitigating difficulties in automatically optimising hardware designs described by high-level synthesis (HLS), which are typically software programs with nested loops. Nevertheless, existing polyhedral tools cannot meet the requirements from HLS developers for platform-specific customisation and software/hardware co-optimisation. This paper proposes $ϕ_{sm}$ (phism), a polyhedral HLS framework built on MLIR, to address these challenges through progressive lowering multi-level intermediate representations (IRs) from polyhedra to HLS designs.

A Concept Knowledge-Driven Keywords Retrieval Framework for Sponsored Search

In sponsored search, retrieving synonymous keywords for exact match type is important for accurately targeted advertising. Data-driven deep learning-based method has been proposed to tackle this problem. An apparent disadvantage of this method is its poor generalization performance on entity-level long-tail instances, even though they might share similar concept-level patterns with frequent instances. With the help of a large knowledge base, we find that most commercial synonymous query-keyword pairs can be abstracted into meaningful conceptual patterns through concept tagging. Based on this fact, we propose a novel knowledge-driven conceptual retrieval framework to mitigate this problem, which consists of three parts: data conceptualization, matching via conceptual patterns and concept-augmented discrimination. Both offline and online experiments show that our method is very effective. This framework has been successfully applied to Baidu's sponsored search system, which yields a significant improvement in revenue.

Building a comprehensive syntactic and semantic corpus of Chinese clinical texts

Objective: To build a comprehensive corpus covering syntactic and semantic annotations of Chinese clinical texts with corresponding annotation guidelines and methods as well as to develop tools trained on the annotated corpus, which supplies baselines for research on Chinese texts in the clinical domain. Materials and methods: An iterative annotation method was proposed to train annotators and to develop annotation guidelines. Then, by using annotation quality assurance measures, a comprehensive corpus was built, containing annotations of part-of-speech (POS) tags, syntactic tags, entities, assertions, and relations. Inter-annotator agreement (IAA) was calculated to evaluate the annotation quality and a Chinese clinical text processing and information extraction system (CCTPIES) was developed based on our annotated corpus. Results: The syntactic corpus consists of 138 Chinese clinical documents with 47,424 tokens and 2553 full parsing trees, while the semantic corpus includes 992 documents that annotated 39,511 entities with their assertions and 7695 relations. IAA evaluation shows that this comprehensive corpus is of good quality, and the system modules are effective. Discussion: The annotated corpus makes a considerable contribution to natural language processing (NLP) research into Chinese texts in the clinical domain. However, this corpus has a number of limitations. Some additional types of clinical text should be introduced to improve corpus coverage and active learning methods should be utilized to promote annotation efficiency. Conclusions: In this study, several annotation guidelines and an annotation method for Chinese clinical texts were proposed, and a comprehensive corpus with its NLP modules were constructed, providing a foundation for further study of applying NLP techniques to Chinese texts in the clinical domain.
