Efficient Crowd Counting via Structured Knowledge Transfer

Crowd counting is an application-oriented task and its inference efficiency is crucial for real-world applications. However, most previous works relied on heavy backbone networks and required prohibitive run-time consumption, which would seriously restrict their deployment scopes and cause poor scalability. To liberate these crowd counting models, we propose a novel Structured Knowledge Transfer (SKT) framework, which fully exploits the structured knowledge of a well-trained teacher network to generate a lightweight but still highly effective student network. Specifically, it is integrated with two complementary transfer modules, including an Intra-Layer Pattern Transfer which sequentially distills the knowledge embedded in layer-wise features of the teacher network to guide feature learning of the student network and an Inter-Layer Relation Transfer which densely distills the cross-layer correlation knowledge of the teacher to regularize the student's feature evolutio Consequently, our student network can derive the layer-wise and cross-layer knowledge from the teacher network to learn compact yet effective features. Extensive evaluations on three benchmarks well demonstrate the effectiveness of our SKT for extensive crowd counting models. In particular, only using around $6\%$ of the parameters and computation cost of original models, our distilled VGG-based models obtain at least 6.5$\times$ speed-up on an Nvidia 1080 GPU and even achieve state-of-the-art performance. Our code and models are available at {\url{https://github.com/HCPLab-SYSU/SKT}}.

Impacts of COVID-19 control measures on tropospheric NO$_2$ over China, South Korea and Italy

Tropospheric nitrogen dioxide (NO$_2$) concentrations are strongly affected by anthropogenic activities. Using space-based measurements of tropospheric NO$_2$, here we investigate the responses of tropospheric NO$_2$ to the 2019 novel coronavirus (COVID-19) over China, South Korea, and Italy. We find noticeable reductions of tropospheric NO$_2$ columns due to the COVID-19 controls by more than 40% over E. China, South Korea, and N. Italy. The 40% reductions of tropospheric NO$_2$ are coincident with intensive lockdown events as well as up to 20% reductions in anthropogenic nitrogen oxides (NO$_x$) emissions. The perturbations in tropospheric NO$_2$ diminished accompanied with the mitigation of COVID-19 pandemic, and finally disappeared within around 50-70 days after the starts of control measures over all three nations, providing indications for the start, maximum, and mitigation of intensive controls. This work exhibits significant influences of lockdown measures on atmospheric environment, highlighting the importance of satellite observations to monitor anthropogenic activity changes.

Testing High-dimensional Covariance Matrices under the Elliptical Distribution and Beyond

We develop tests for high-dimensional covariance matrices under a generalized elliptical model. Our tests are based on a central limit theorem (CLT) for linear spectral statistics of the sample covariance matrix based on self-normalized observations. For testing sphericity, our tests neither assume specific parametric distributions nor involve the kurtosis of data. More generally, we can test against any non-negative definite matrix that can even be not invertible. As an interesting application, we illustrate in empirical studies that our tests can be used to test uncorrelatedness among idiosyncratic returns.

An optimal dispatch scheme for DSO and prosumers by implementing three-phase distribution locational marginal prices

Since distribution system operator (DSO) cannot directly control prosumers with controllable resources, this paper proposes an optimal dispatch method of using three-phase distribution locational marginal prices (DLMPs) as effective economic signals to incentivize prosumers' behaviors. In the proposed three-phase DLMP model, DLMPs for both active power and reactive power are calculated. To alleviate the imbalance, congestions and voltage violations in active distribution networks (ADNs),the DSO and prosumers should be coordinated. We develop such a coordinated control scheme for the DSO and prosumers,in which the DSO generates and broadcasts three-phase DLMPs as price signals to induce prosumers' behaviors. We prove that given the DLMPs for active power and reactive power as settlement prices, the optimal dispatch of the ADN will also maximize the surplus of prosumers. Therefore, the power output of rational prosumers will match the optimal dispatch, resulting in better operational conditions of ADNs. Then the three-phase imbalance, congestions and voltage violations will be well reduced. Numerical tests demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

A Novel JT-CoMP Scheme in 5G Fractal Small Cell Networks

To satisfy the requirement of the fifth generation (5G) mobile communications that offers an ultra high data rate of 100Mbps to 1Gbps anytime and anywhere, the coordinated multipoint (CoMP) technique is proposed to mitigate inter-cell interference to improve the coverage of high data rate services, cell-edge throughput, and system capacity. However, the joint transmission (JT) CoMP technique is difficult to be applied in practice due to the critical time synchronization for multiple coordination links and the bottleneck of backhaul capacity and radio resource at each small cell base stations (SBSs). Moreover, since the coordination SBSs in the conditional scheme are entirely separate from each other, different time of arrivals at the user cause the severe time synchronization problem. The anisotropic propagation environment in the urban scenario makes the implementation condition even worse. To tackle these issues, we propose a novel JT-CoMP scheme with the anisotropic path loss model to minimize the network backhaul traffic subject to the constraints on the radio resource and the differences in time of arrivals. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed distance-resource-limited CoMP scheme can obtain the maximum achievable rate with the minimum network backhaul traffic, compared with existing schemes.

Computing Resource Allocation of Mobile Edge Computing Networks Based on Potential Game Theory

Mobile edge computing (MEC) networks are one of the key technologies for ultra-reliability and low-latency communications. The computing resource allocation solution needs to be carefully designed to guarantee the computing resource efficiency of MEC networks. Based on the potential game theory, a computing resource allocation solution is proposed to reduce energy consumption and improve computing resource efficiency in MEC networks. The computing resource allocation solution includes two parts: the first part is the power control scheme based on the potential game theory and the second part is the computing resource allocation scheme based on linear programming. The power control scheme is to find a set of the transmission powers of base stations (BSs) that maximizes the potential function of MEC networks. The computing resource allocation scheme is to maximize the average computing resource allocation coefficient of the MEC networks based on the results of the power control scheme. Compared with traditional solutions, simulation results indicate the computing resource utilization and energy efficiency of the proposed computing resource allocation solution are significantly improved.

Vehicles to Pedestrians Signal Transmissions Based on Cloud Computing

Collisions between vehicles and pedestrians usually result in the fatality to the vulnerable road users (VRUs). Thus, new technologies are needed to be developed for protecting the VRUs. Based on the high density of pedestrians and limited computing capability of base stations, in this paper the cloud computing technologies are adopted to handle the huge amounts of safety-critical messages. Moreover, the wireless multi-hop backhaul technology is adopted to overcome the bottlenecks of limited transmission capability and queueing delay of the transmitted safety-critical messages between base stations and clouds. Based on the multi-hop wireless transmission scheme, the signal transmission success probability and delay between pedestrians and clouds are derived for performance analysis. Furthermore, numerical simulations are performed to illustrate the relationship between the transmission success probability and the received signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR) threshold.

Alternative Interpretation of Lens Aberration on OTF

This paper demonstrates a method of interpreting the mechanism of aberration of optical systems based on non-Fourier transform optical transfer function (OTF). According to the parameters of object plane cosine fringe, we obtain the position on the pupil plane of the two beams of the interference pair emitted by the cosine fringes. By combining the aberrations of the lens, the phase of the cosine fringe of each interference pair in the image plane can be obtained. Then the intensity of the cosine fringe formed by all the interference pattern is superimposed to obtain the brightness distribution of the cosine fringe on the image plane. After that, the OTF of the aberration system can be obtained on the basis of the cosine fringe modulation on the image plane and the phase shift. Finally, taking the non-Fourier transform OTF theory with wave analyze the complex optical system, providing help for the optical system design and imaging quality evaluation.

Coverage and Handoff Analysis of 5G Fractal Small Cell Networks

It is anticipated that much higher network capacity will be achieved by the fifth generation (5G) small cell networks incorporated with the millimeter wave (mmWave) technology. However, mmWave signals are more sensitive to blockages than signals in lower frequency bands, which highlights the effect of anisotropic path loss in network coverage. According to the fractal characteristics of cellular coverage, a multi-directional path loss model is proposed for 5G small cell networks, where different directions are subject to different path loss exponents. Furthermore, the coverage probability, association probability, and the handoff probability are derived for 5G fractal small cell networks based on the proposed multi-directional path loss model. Numerical results indicate that the coverage probability with the multi-directional path loss model is less than that with the isotropic path loss model, and the association probability with long link distance, e.g., 150m, increases obviously with the increase of the effect of anisotropic path loss in 5G fractal small cell networks. Moreover, it is observed that the anisotropic propagation environment is having a profound impact on the handoff performance. Meanwhile, we could conclude that the resulting heavy handoff overhead is emerging as a new challenge for 5G fractal small cell networks.

Magnetic and Structural Properties of the Iron Oxychalcogenides La$_{2}$O$_{2}$Fe$_{2}$O$M_{2}$ ($M$= S, Se)

We present the results of structural and magnetic phase comparisons of the iron oxychalcogenides La$_{2}$O$_{2}$Fe$_{2}$O$M$$_{2}$ ($M$ = S, Se). Elastic neutron scattering reveals that $M$ = S and Se have similar nuclear structures at room and low temperatures. We find that both materials obtain antiferromagnetic ordering at a Neel temperature $T_{N}$ 90.1 $\pm$ 0.16 K and 107.2 $\pm$ 0.06 K for $M$= Se and S, respectively. The magnetic arrangements of $M$ = S, Se are obtained through Rietveld refinement. We find the order parameter exponent $β$ to be 0.129 $\pm$ 0.006 for $M$ = Se and 0.133 $\pm$ 0.007 for $M$ = S. Each of these values is near the Ising symmetry value of 1/8. This suggests that although lattice and electronic structural modifications result from chalcogen exchange, the nature of the magnetic interactions is similar in these materials.

Base Station Switch-off with Mutual Repulsion in 5G Massive MIMO Networks

When small cells are densely deployed in the fifth generation (5G) cellular networks, switching off a part of base stations (BSs) is a practical approach for saving energy consumption considering the variation of traffic load. The small cell network with the massive multi-input multi-output (massive MIMO) system is analyzed in this paper due to the dense deployment and low power consumption. Based on the BS switch-off strategy with distance constraints, the energy and coverage efficiency are investigated to illustrate the performance of the BS switch-off strategy. Simulation results indicate that the energy efficiency and coverage efficiency of the proposed strategy are better than the random strategy. The energy efficiency increases with the BS intensity and the minimal distance, and a maximum coverage efficiency can be achieved with the increase of the BS intensity and the minimum distance. In this case, the optimal BS switch-off strategy can be designed under this work in the actual scene.

Downlink Small-cell Base Station Cooperation Strategy in Fractal Small-cell Networks

Coordinated multipoint (CoMP) communications are considered for the fifth-generation (5G) small-cell networks as a tool to improve the high data rates and the cell-edge throughput. The average achievable rates of the small-cell base stations (SBS) cooperation strategies with distance and received signal power constraints are respectively derived for the fractal small-cell networks based on the anisotropic path loss model. Simulation results are presented to show that the average achievable rate with the received signal power constraint is larger than the rate with a distance constraint considering the same number of cooperative SBSs. The average achievable rate with distance constraint decreases with the increase of the intensity of SBSs when the anisotropic path loss model is considered. What's more, the network energy efficiency of fractal smallcell networks adopting the SBS cooperation strategy with the received signal power constraint is analyzed. The network energy efficiency decreases with the increase of the intensity of SBSs which indicates a challenge on the deployment design for fractal small-cell networks.

Energy and coverage efficiency trade-off in 5G small cell networks

When small cells are densely deployed in the fifth generation (5G) cellular networks, the base stations (BSs) switch-off strategy is an effective approach for saving energy consumption considering changes of traffic load. In general, the loss of coverage efficiency is an inevitable cost for cellular networks adopting BSs switch-off strategies. Based on the BSs switch-off strategy, an optimized energy density efficiency of hard core point process (HCPP) small cell networks is proposed to trade off the energy and coverage efficiency. Simulation results imply that the minimum active BS distance used for the BSs switch-off strategy is recommended as 150 meters to achieve a tradeoff between energy and coverage efficiency in 5G small cell networks.

A Dual-Directional Path-loss Model in 5G Wireless Fractal Small Cell Networks

With the anticipated increase in the number of low power base stations (BSs) deployed in small cell networks, blockage effects becoming more sensitive on wireless transmissions over high spectrums, variable propagation fading scenarios make it hard to describe coverage of small cell networks. In this paper, we propose a dual-directional path loss model cooperating with Line-of-Sight (LoS) and Non-Line-of-Sight (NLoS) transmissions for the fifth generation (5G) fractal small cell networks. Based on the proposed path loss model, a LoS transmission probability is derived as a function of the coordinate azimuth of the BS and the distance between the mobile user (MU) and the BS. Moreover, the coverage probability and the average achievable rate are analyzed for 5G fractal small cell networks. Numerical results imply that the minimum intensity of blockages and the maximum intensity of BSs can not guarantee the maximum average achievable rate in 5G fractal small cell networks. Our results explore the relationship between the anisotropic path loss fading and the small cell coverage in 5G fractal small cell networks.

Wireless Fractal Cellular Networks

With the seamless coverage of wireless cellular networks in modern society, it is interesting to consider the shape of wireless cellular coverage. Is the shape a regular hexagon, an irregular polygon, or another complex geometrical shape? Based on fractal theory, the statistical characteristic of the wireless cellular coverage boundary is determined by the measured wireless cellular data collected from Shanghai, China. The measured results indicate that the wireless cellular coverage boundary presents an extremely irregular geometrical shape, which is also called a statistical fractal shape. Moreover, the statistical fractal characteristics of the wireless cellular coverage boundary have been validated by values of the Hurst parameter estimated in angular scales. The statistical fractal characteristics of the wireless cellular coverage boundary can be used to evaluate and design the handoff scheme of mobile user terminals in wireless cellular networks.

5G green cellular networks considering power allocation schemes

It is important to assess the effect of transmit power allocation schemes on the energy consumption on random cellular networks. The energy efficiency of 5G green cellular networks with average and water-filling power allocation schemes is studied in this paper. Based on the proposed interference and achievable rate model, an energy efficiency model is proposed for MIMO random cellular networks. Furthermore, the energy efficiency with average and water-filling power allocation schemes are presented, respectively. Numerical results indicate that the maximum limits of energy efficiency are always there for MIMO random cellular networks with different intensity ratios of mobile stations (MSs) to base stations (BSs) and channel conditions. Compared with the average power allocation scheme, the water-filling scheme is shown to improve the energy efficiency of MIMO random cellular networks when channel state information (CSI) is attainable for both transmitters and receivers.

Testing the independence of two random vectors where only one dimension is large

For testing the independence of two vectors with respective dimensions $p_1$ and $p_2$, the existing literature in high-dimensional statistics all assume that both dimensions $p_1$ and $p_2$ grow to infinity with the sample size. However, as evidenced in the RNA-sequencing data analysis discussed in the paper, it happens frequently that one of the dimension is quite small and the other quite large compared to the sample size. In this paper, we address this new asymptotic framework for the independence test. A new test procedure is introduced and its asymptotic normality is established when the vectors are normal distributed. A Mote-Carlo study demonstrates the consistency of the procedure and exhibits its superiority over some existing high-dimensional procedures. Applied to the RNA-sequencing data mentioned above, we obtain very convincing results on pairwise independence/dependence of gene isoform expressions as attested by prior knowledge established in that field. Lastly, Monte-Carlo experiments show that the procedure is robust against the normality assumption on the population vectors.

Mott-Kondo Insulator Behavior in the Iron Oxychalcogenides

We perform a combined experimental-theoretical study of the Fe-oxychalcogenides (FeO$\emph{Ch}$) series La$_{2}$O$_{2}$Fe$_{2}$O\emph{M}$_{2}$ (\emph{M}=S, Se), which is the latest among the Fe-based materials with the potential \ to show unconventional high-T$_{c}$ superconductivity (HTSC). A combination of incoherent Hubbard features in X-ray absorption (XAS) and resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) spectra, as well as resitivity data, reveal that the parent FeO$\emph{Ch}$ are correlation-driven insulators. To uncover microscopics underlying these findings, we perform local density approximation-plus-dynamical mean field theory (LDA+DMFT) calculations that unravel a Mott-Kondo insulating state. Based upon good agreement between theory and a range of data, we propose that FeO$\emph{Ch}$ may constitute a new, ideal testing ground to explore HTSC arising from a strange metal proximate to a novel selective-Mott quantum criticality.
