A pulsar escaping an ancient open cluster via tidal stripping

Open clusters are the primary birthplaces of stars in the Milky Way disk, yet their neutron star progeny are rarely found within them, presumably due to supernova-induced kicks that eject them at birth. Here we report the arcsec-level localization of the pulsar PSR J1921+3745 to the tidal tail of NGC 6791, one of the oldest and most massive open clusters. Our N-body simulation shows that more than 95% of neutron stars formed in such clusters have been ejected. This pulsar's location in the tidal tail indicates it was retained for billions of years before being stripped by Galactic tides. This long-term retention requires low natal kicks, consistent with formation via electron-capture supernova. Our findings capture a rare snapshot of a neutron star transitioning into the Galactic field, identifying tidal stripping of ancient clusters as a verified source of the Galactic neutron star population.

Vision-Language Guided Hyperspectral Object Tracking via Semantics Fusion and Contextual Template Updating

Hyperspectral object tracking (HOT) leverages the rich spectral information provided by hyperspectral videos (HSVs), offering substantial potential for object tracking. However, efficiently extracting and exploiting spectral information from redundant spectral bands remains a fundamental challenge, which severely limits model generalization and tracking performance. Moreover, in dynamic scenes, targets often experience drastic appearance variations due to factors such as occlusion and illumination changes. These variations lead to large deformations between the current frame and the template. Such discrepancies pose major challenges for existing temporal modeling approaches. In this work, we propose VLHTrack, a novel hyperspectral vision-language (VL) joint tracking framework. Specifically, we incorporate language priors to address the fundamental challenge of spectral redundancy by designing a Language-Guided Band Selection Module (LBSM). By leveraging Large Language Model (LLM) descriptions, LBSM establishes a semantic-to-spectral mapping that mitigates redundancy and accentuates discriminative spectral features. A Multi-Modal Vision-Language Fusion Module is then employed to seamlessly integrate visual and linguistic embeddings, harnessing their complementary advantages to learn coherent cross-modal representations. To address target deformation in long-term sequences, we propose a dynamic update template feature strategy implemented via the Dynamic Template Update with Mamba (DTUM) module. By leveraging selective state space modeling, DTUM learns inter-frame dependencies to update template feature, ensuring efficient template feature evolution guided by temporal context. Experiments on HOT2023 and HOT2024 demonstrate that VLHTrack outperforms state-of-the-art (SOTA) methods.

Beyond Shortcuts: Mitigating Visual Illusions in Frozen VLMs via Qualitative Reasoning

While Vision-Language Models (VLMs) have achieved state-of-the-art performance in general visual tasks, their perceptual robustness remains remarkably brittle when confronted with optical illusions. These failures are often attributed to shortcut heuristics, where models prioritize linguistic priors and memorized prototypes over direct visual evidence. In this work, we propose Structured Qualitative Inference (SQI), a training-free, data-centric framework designed to fortify visual grounding in frozen VLMs. SQI addresses perceptual anomalies through three systematic modules: (1) Axiomatic Constraint Injection, which suppresses erroneous metric estimations and quantitative hallucinations; (2) Hierarchical Scene Decomposition, which decouples target visual manifolds from complex background distractors; and (3) Counterfactual Self-Verification, an adversarial reasoning step that mitigates confirmation bias. By orchestrating these qualitative constraints at inference time, SQI effectively aligns high-level linguistic reasoning with low-level visual perception. Our framework was evaluated on the DataCV 2026 Challenge (Task I: Classic Illusion Understanding), where it ranked 2nd place overall. Experimental results demonstrate that SQI not only significantly enhances accuracy across diverse illusion categories but also provides superior diagnostic interpretability without any model fine-tuning. Our success underscores the potential of structured qualitative grounding as a robust paradigm for developing next-generation, illusion-resistant vision-language systems.

Breaking Euston: Recovering Private Inputs from Secure Inference by Exploiting Subspace Leakage

In the 47th IEEE Symposium on Security and Privacy (IEEE S&P 2026), Gao et al. proposed an efficient and user-friendly secure transformer inference framework, namely Euston. In Euston, a singular value decomposition-based matrix transmission protocol is designed to efficiently transmit input matrices, reducing communication bandwidth by approximately 2.8 times. In this manuscript, we show that this transmission protocol introduces subspace leakage of random masks, enabling the model owner to recover private samples easily. We further validate the effectiveness of the recovery attack through simple experiments on image and language datasets, highlighting a fundamental privacy risk of the protocol design.

3D Smoke Scene Reconstruction Guided by Vision Priors from Multimodal Large Language Models

Reconstructing 3D scenes from smoke-degraded multi-view images is particularly difficult because smoke introduces strong scattering effects, view-dependent appearance changes, and severe degradation of cross-view consistency. To address these issues, we propose a framework that integrates visual priors with efficient 3D scene modeling. We employ Nano-Banana-Pro to enhance smoke-degraded images and provide clearer visual observations for reconstruction and develop Smoke-GS, a medium-aware 3D Gaussian Splatting framework for smoke scene reconstruction and restoration-oriented novel view synthesis. Smoke-GS models the scene using explicit 3D Gaussians and introduces a lightweight view-dependent medium branch to capture direction-dependent appearance variations caused by smoke. Our method preserves the rendering efficiency of 3D Gaussian Splatting while improving robustness to smoke-induced degradation. Results demonstrate the effectiveness of our method for generating consistent and visually clear novel views in challenging smoke environments.

Measuring Social Bias in Vision-Language Models with Face-Only Counterfactuals from Real Photos

Vision-Language Models (VLMs) are increasingly deployed in socially consequential settings, raising concerns about social bias driven by demographic cues. A central challenge in measuring such social bias is attribution under visual confounding: real-world images entangle race and gender with correlated factors such as background and clothing, obscuring attribution. We propose a \textbf{face-only counterfactual evaluation paradigm} that isolates demographic effects while preserving real-image realism. Starting from real photographs, we generate counterfactual variants by editing only facial attributes related to race and gender, keeping all other visual factors fixed. Based on this paradigm, we construct \textbf{FOCUS}, a dataset of 480 scene-matched counterfactual images across six occupations and ten demographic groups, and propose \textbf{REFLECT}, a benchmark comprising three decision-oriented tasks: two-alternative forced choice, multiple-choice socioeconomic inference, and numeric salary recommendation. Experiments on five state-of-the-art VLMs reveal that demographic disparities persist under strict visual control and vary substantially across task formulations. These findings underscore the necessity of controlled, counterfactual audits and highlight task design as a critical factor in evaluating social bias in multimodal models.

Real-Time Oriented Object Detection Transformer in Remote Sensing Images

Recent real-time detection transformers have gained popularity due to their simplicity and efficiency. However, these detectors do not explicitly model object rotation, especially in remote sensing imagery where objects appear at arbitrary angles, leading to challenges in angle representation, matching cost, and training stability. In this paper, we propose a real-time oriented object detection transformer, the first real-time end-to-end oriented object detector to the best of our knowledge, that addresses the above issues. Specifically, angle distribution refinement is proposed to reformulate angle regression as an iterative refinement of probability distributions, thereby capturing the uncertainty of object rotation and providing a more fine-grained angle representation. Then, we incorporate a Chamfer distance cost into bipartite matching, measuring box distance via vertex sets, enabling more accurate geometric alignment and eliminating ambiguous matches. Moreover, we propose oriented contrastive denoising to stabilize training and analyze four noise modes. We observe that a ground truth can be assigned to different index queries across different decoder layers, and analyze this issue using the proposed instability metric. We design a series of model variants and experiments to validate the proposed method. Notably, our O2-DFINE-L, O2-RTDETR-R50 and O2-DEIM-R50 achieve 77.73%/78.45%/80.15% AP50 on DOTA1.0 and 132/119/119 FPS on the 2080ti GPU. Electrically switchable photonic diode empowered by chiral resonance

The on-chip integration of nonreciprocal optical devices remains a critical challenge for modern optoelectronics, as conventional magneto-optic approaches suffer from material incompatibility and excessive optical losses. Nonlinear photonic diodes have emerged as a promising magnet-free alternative, yet their widespread adoption has been constrained by inherent limitations in reconfigurability. Here, we present an all-silicon, electrically tunable photonic diode leveraging engineered chiral resonances in an ultra-compact microring architecture. The pronounced asymmetric modal coupling enables nonreciprocal transmission with two distinct operation modes at threshold powers down to -5 dBm. The chirality further enables unprecedented control over self-pulsation dynamics, manifesting in propagation-direction-dependent oscillation thresholds and temporal signatures. Crucially, post-fabrication electrical reconfigurability allows dynamic switching between forward, backward, and disabled states. This work represents a significant advancement in integrated nonreciprocal photonics, offering a CMOS-compatible solution with transformative potential for optical interconnects, photonic neural networks, and signal processing systems.

When Abundance Conceals Weakness: Knowledge Conflict in Multilingual Models

Large Language Models (LLMs) encode vast world knowledge across multiple languages, yet their internal beliefs are often unevenly distributed across linguistic spaces. When external evidence contradicts these language-dependent memories, models encounter \emph{cross-lingual knowledge conflict}, a phenomenon largely unexplored beyond English-centric settings. We introduce \textbf{CLEAR}, a \textbf{C}ross-\textbf{L}ingual knowl\textbf{E}dge conflict ev\textbf{A}luation f\textbf{R}amework that systematically examines how multilingual LLMs reconcile conflicting internal beliefs and multilingual external evidence. CLEAR decomposes conflict resolution into four progressive scenarios, from multilingual parametric elicitation to competitive multi-source cross-lingual induction, and systematically evaluates model behavior across two complementary QA benchmarks with distinct task characteristics. We construct multilingual versions of ConflictQA and ConflictingQA covering 10 typologically diverse languages and evaluate six representative LLMs. Our experiments reveal a task-dependent decision dichotomy. In reasoning-intensive tasks, conflict resolution is dominated by language resource abundance, with high-resource languages exerting stronger persuasive power. In contrast, for entity-centric factual conflicts, linguistic affinity, not resource scale, becomes decisive, allowing low-resource but linguistically aligned languages to outperform distant high-resource ones.

DTTNet: Improving Video Shadow Detection via Dark-Aware Guidance and Tokenized Temporal Modeling

Video shadow detection confronts two entwined difficulties: distinguishing shadows from complex backgrounds and modeling dynamic shadow deformations under varying illumination. To address shadow-background ambiguity, we leverage linguistic priors through the proposed Vision-language Match Module (VMM) and a Dark-aware Semantic Block (DSB), extracting text-guided features to explicitly differentiate shadows from dark objects. Furthermore, we introduce adaptive mask reweighting to downweight penumbra regions during training and apply edge masks at the final decoder stage for better supervision. For temporal modeling of variable shadow shapes, we propose a Tokenized Temporal Block (TTB) that decouples spatiotemporal learning. TTB summarizes cross-frame shadow semantics into learnable temporal tokens, enabling efficient sequence encoding with minimal computation overhead. Comprehensive Experiments on multiple benchmark datasets demonstrate state-of-the-art accuracy and real-time inference efficiency. Codes are available at https://github.com/city-cheng/DTTNet.

Boost Post-Training Quantization via Null Space Optimization for Large Language Models

Existing post-training quantization methods for large language models (LLMs) offer remarkable success. However, the increasingly marginal performance gains suggest that existing quantization strategies are insufficient to support the development of more compressed models. To inspire new directions for future research, this paper introduces the concept of null space into LLMs quantization. We argue that the quantization error can be effectively alleviated by constraining the post-quantization weight perturbation to lie within the null space of input activations. To prove this idea, we propose a plug-and-play null space projection module for existing milestone PTQ baselines named Q2N. Specifically, we first design an efficient and accurate null space projection approximation method tailored to the characteristics of LLMs. Subsequently, we theoretically derive a closed-form solution for an equivalent vector of the obtained projection matrix, which satisfies practical inference condition while avoiding additional memory overhead. Extensive experiments are conducted on various state-of-the-art LLMs (LLaMA3, DeepSeek, Qwen3) and baselines, demonstrating the effectiveness of both our Q2N and the perspective of null space optimization for LLMs quantization. We view this paper the first step to further alleviate the quantization error based on the insights of null space, hoping it inspiring future researchers to design more advanced quantization methods. Integrated Planning and Control on Manifolds: Factor Graph Representation and Toolkit

Model predictive control (MPC) faces significant limitations when applied to systems evolving on nonlinear manifolds, such as robotic attitude dynamics and constrained motion planning, where traditional Euclidean formulations struggle with singularities, over-parameterization, and poor convergence. To overcome these challenges, this paper introduces FactorMPC, a factor-graph based MPC toolkit that unifies system dynamics, constraints, and objectives into a modular, user-friendly, and efficient optimization structure. Our approach natively supports manifold-valued states with Gaussian uncertainties modeled in tangent spaces. By exploiting the sparsity and probabilistic structure of factor graphs, the toolkit achieves real-time performance even for high-dimensional systems with complex constraints. The velocity-extended on-manifold control barrier function (CBF)-based obstacle avoidance factors are designed for safety-critical applications. By bridging graphical models with safety-critical MPC, our work offers a scalable and geometrically consistent framework for integrated planning and control. The simulations and experimental results on the quadrotor demonstrate superior trajectory tracking and obstacle avoidance performance compared to baseline methods. To foster research reproducibility, we have provided open-source implementation offering plug-and-play factors.

Verification of Cas A neutron star cooling rate using Chandra HRC-S observations

The young neutron star (NS) in the Cassiopeia A (Cas A) supernova remnant is a fascinating test for theories of NS cooling. Chandra observations have indicated that its surface temperature is declining rapidly, about 2% per decade, using 20 years of data, if a uniform carbon atmosphere is assumed for the NS. This rapid decline may be caused by the neutrons in the NS core transitioning from a normal to a superfluid state. However, most of the Cas A NS observations were performed by the Chandra ACIS detectors, which suffer complicated systematic effects. Here, we test the cooling of the Cas A NS with Chandra HRC data over 25 years. The Chandra HRC detector has independent systematics, serving as a cross-check. Assuming a fixed hydrogen column density ($N_{\rm H}$), we infer the cooling rate of the Cas A NS to be 0.57$^{+0.26}_{-0.27}$% per decade. Allowing the $N_{\rm H}$ to vary with time (as estimated using ACIS data), the cooling rate is 1.11$^{+0.25}_{-0.28}$% per decade. These cooling rates are smaller than measured using ACIS data, implying systematic uncertainties have not been eradicated from either or both datasets. However, we have verified the decline in the absorbed flux from the Cas A NS using an independent instrument, at $>3σ$ level (4.7%$\pm$1.5% over 10 years). Additionally, the weaker cooling rate of Cas A NS inferred from HRC datasets eliminates the tension with the theoretically predicted cooling, and can be explained by the reduced efficiency of the neutrino emission accompanying the Cooper pair breaking and formation process in neutron triplet-state superfluid.

PTQ1.61: Push the Real Limit of Extremely Low-Bit Post-Training Quantization Methods for Large Language Models

Large Language Models (LLMs) suffer severe performance degradation when facing extremely low-bit (sub 2-bit) quantization. Several existing sub 2-bit post-training quantization (PTQ) methods utilize a mix-precision scheme by leveraging an unstructured fine-grained mask to explicitly distinguish salient weights, while which introduces an extra 1-bit or more per weight. To explore the real limit of PTQ, we propose an extremely low-bit PTQ method called PTQ1.61, which enables weight quantization to 1.61-bit for the first time. Specifically, we first introduce a one-dimensional structured mask with negligibly additional 0.0002-bit per weight based on input activations from the perspective of reducing the upper bound of quantization error to allocate corresponding salient weight channels to 4-bit. For non-salient channels binarization, an efficient block-wise scaling factors optimization framework is then presented to take implicit row-wise correlations and angular biases into account. Different from prior works that concentrate on adjusting quantization methodologies, we further propose a novel paradigm called quantization preprocessing, where we argue that transforming the weight distribution of the pretrained model before quantization can alleviate the difficulty in per-channel extremely low-bit PTQ. Extensive experiments indicate our PTQ1.61 achieves state-of-the-art performance in extremely low-bit quantization. Codes are available at https://github.com/zjq0455/PTQ1.61.

A Comprehensive Analysis of X-ray Sources in Terzan 5 Using Chandra Observations

We analyze photometry, spectra, and variability of over 100 faint X-ray sources in the globular cluster Terzan 5, using 737 ks of Chandra data. X-ray colors and spectral fitting allow clear separation of foreground sources (with less extinction than the cluster), quiescent low-mass X-ray binaries (qLMXBs), and sources with harder spectra. We identify 22 candidate qLMXBs, over twice that found in any other cluster. This is consistent with Terzan 5's stellar interaction rate, the highest among Galactic globular clusters. We do not see qLMXBs dominated by thermal emission below $L_X\sim10^{32}$ erg/s, though qLMXBs with stronger nonthermal emission could be missed. We find that more than 50 % of the qLMXB sources have neutron star thermal component contributing over 80 % of the total luminosity. We report an unusual spectral feature around 1.75 keV in the combined spectrum of Ter 5 X-3. The concentration of the qLMXBs within the cluster is consistent with that of a population of mass $1.46 \pm 0.14$ M$_\odot$. We identify secure X-ray counterparts to millisecond pulsars Terzan 5 ar and Terzan 5 at, using positional coincidence and orbital X-ray light curves matching those expected for spider pulsars.

Benchmarking Post-Training Quantization in LLMs: Comprehensive Taxonomy, Unified Evaluation, and Comparative Analysis

Post-training Quantization (PTQ) technique has been extensively adopted for large language models (LLMs) compression owing to its efficiency and low resource requirement. However, current research lacks a in-depth analysis of the superior and applicable scenarios of each PTQ strategy. In addition, existing algorithms focus primarily on performance, overlooking the trade-off among model size, performance, and quantization bitwidth. To mitigate these confusions, we provide a novel benchmark for LLMs PTQ in this paper. Firstly, in order to support our benchmark, we propose a comprehensive taxonomy for existing mainstream methods by scrutinizing their computational strategies (e.g., optimization-based, compensation-based, etc.). Then, we conduct extensive experiments with the baseline within each class, covering models with various sizes (7B-70B), bitwidths, training levels (LLaMA1/2/3/3.1), architectures (Mixtral, DeepSeekMoE and Mamba) and modality (LLaVA1.5 and VILA1.5) on a wide range of evaluation metrics.Through comparative analysis on the results, we summarize the superior of each PTQ strategy and modelsize-bitwidth trade-off considering the performance. For example, our benchmark reveals that compensation-based technique demonstrates outstanding cross-architecture robustness and extremely low-bit PTQ for ultra large models should be reexamined. Finally, we further accordingly claim that a practical combination of compensation and other PTQ strategy can achieve SOTA various robustness. We believe that our benchmark will provide valuable recommendations for the deployment of LLMs and future research on PTQ approaches. We conduct an repository for our benchmark at https://github.com/zjq0455/PTQ_Benchmark.

Modality-Guided Dynamic Graph Fusion and Temporal Diffusion for Self-Supervised RGB-T Tracking

To reduce the reliance on large-scale annotations, self-supervised RGB-T tracking approaches have garnered significant attention. However, the omission of the object region by erroneous pseudo-label or the introduction of background noise affects the efficiency of modality fusion, while pseudo-label noise triggered by similar object noise can further affect the tracking performance. In this paper, we propose GDSTrack, a novel approach that introduces dynamic graph fusion and temporal diffusion to address the above challenges in self-supervised RGB-T tracking. GDSTrack dynamically fuses the modalities of neighboring frames, treats them as distractor noise, and leverages the denoising capability of a generative model. Specifically, by constructing an adjacency matrix via an Adjacency Matrix Generator (AMG), the proposed Modality-guided Dynamic Graph Fusion (MDGF) module uses a dynamic adjacency matrix to guide graph attention, focusing on and fusing the object's coherent regions. Temporal Graph-Informed Diffusion (TGID) models MDGF features from neighboring frames as interference, and thus improving robustness against similar-object noise. Extensive experiments conducted on four public RGB-T tracking datasets demonstrate that GDSTrack outperforms the existing state-of-the-art methods. The source code is available at https://github.com/LiShenglana/GDSTrack.
