A linear sampling method for inverse acoustic scattering by a locally rough interface

This paper is concerned with the inverse problem of time-harmonic acoustic scattering by an unbounded, locally rough interface which is assumed to be a local perturbation of a plane. The purpose of this paper is to recover the local perturbation of the interface from the near-field measurement given on a straight line segment with a finite distance above the interface and generated by point sources. Precisely, we propose a novel version of the linear sampling method to recover the location and shape of the local perturbation of the interface numerically. Our method is based on a modified near-field operator equation associated with a special rough surface, constructed by reformulating the forward scattering problem into an equivalent integral equation formulation in a bounded domain, leading to a fast imaging algorithm. Numerical experiments are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the imaging method.

Convergence analysis of the PML method for time-domain electromagnetic scattering problems

In this paper, a perfectly matched layer (PML) method is proposed to solve the time-domain electromagnetic scattering problems in 3D effectively. The PML problem is defined in a spherical layer and derived by using the Laplace transform and real coordinate stretching in the frequency domain. The well-posedness and the stability estimate of the PML problem are first proved based on the Laplace transform and the energy method. The exponential convergence of the PML method is then established in terms of the thickness of the layer and the PML absorbing parameter. As far as we know, this is the first convergence result for the time-domain PML method for the three-dimensional Maxwell equations. Our proof is mainly based on the stability estimates of solutions of the truncated PML problem and the exponential decay estimates of the stretched dyadic Green's function for the Maxwell equations in the free space.

On Recovery of a Bounded Elastic Body by Electromagnetic Far-Field Measurements

This paper is concerned with the problem of scattering of a time-harmonic electromagnetic field by a three-dimensional elastic body. General transmission conditions are considered to model the interaction between the electromagnetic field and the elastic body on the interface by assuming Voigt's model. The existence of a unique solution of the interaction problem is proved in an appropriate Sobolev space by employing a variational method together with the classical Fredholm alternative. The inverse problem is then considered, which is to recover the elastic body by the scattered wave-field. It is shown that the shape and location of the elastic body can be uniquely determined by the fixed energy magnetic (or electric) far-field measurements corresponding to incident plane waves with all polarizations.

Convergence of the perfectly matched layer method for transient acoustic-elastic interaction above an unbounded rough surface

This paper is concerned with the time-dependent acoustic-elastic interaction problem associated with a bounded elastic body immersed in a homogeneous air or fluid above an unbounded rough surface. The well-posedness and stability of the problem are first established by using the Laplace transform and the energy method. A perfectly matched layer (PML) is then introduced to truncate the interaction problem above a finite layer containing the elastic body, leading to a PML problem in a finite strip domain. We further establish the existence, uniqueness and stability estimate of solutions to the PML problem. Finally, we prove the exponential convergence of the PML problem in terms of the thickness and parameter of the PML layer, based on establishing an error estimate between the DtN operators of the original problem and the PML problem.

Analysis of a time-dependent fluid-solid interaction problem above a local rough surface

This paper is concerned with the mathematical analysis of time-dependent fluid-solid interaction problem associated with a bounded elastic body immersed in a homogeneous air or fluid above a local rough surface. We reformulate the unbounded scattering problem into an equivalent initial-boundary value problem defined in a bounded domain by proposing a transparent boundary condition (TBC) on a hemisphere. Analyzing the reduced problem with Lax-Milgram lemma and abstract inversion theorem of Laplace transform, we prove the well-posedness and stability for the reduced problem. Moreover, an a priori estimate is established directly in the time domain for the acoustic wave and elastic displacement with using the energy method.

Uniqueness in inverse acoustic and electromagnetic scattering by penetrable obstacles with embedded objects

This paper considers the inverse problem of scattering of time-harmonic acoustic and electromagnetic plane waves by a bounded, inhomogeneous, penetrable obstacle with embedded objects inside. A new method is proposed to prove that the inhomogeneous penetrable obstacle can be uniquely determined from the far-field pattern at a fixed frequency, disregarding its contents. Our method is based on constructing a well-posed interior transmission problem in a small domain associated with the Helmholtz or modified Helmholtz equation and the Maxwell or modified Maxwell equations. A key role is played by the smallness of the domain which ensures that the lowest transmission eigenvalue is large so that a given wave number k is not an eigenvalue of the interior transmission problem. Another ingredient in our proofs is a priori estimates of solutions to the transmission scattering problems with data in Lp (1<p<2), which are established in this paper by using the integral equation method. A main feature of the new method is that it can deal with the acoustic and electromagnetic cases in a unified way and can be easily applied to deal with inverse scattering by unbounded rough interfaces.

Studies on an inverse source problem for a space-time fractional diffusion equation by constructing a strong maximum principle

In this paper, we focus on a space-time fractional diffusion equation with the generalized Caputo's fractional derivative operator and a general space nonlocal operator (with the fractional Laplace operator as a special case). A weak Harnack's inequality has been established by using a special test function and some properties of the space nonlocal operator. Based on the weak Harnack's inequality, a strong maximum principle has been obtained which is an important characterization of fractional parabolic equations. With these tools, we establish a uniqueness result for an inverse source problem on the determination of the temporal component of the inhomogeneous term.

Inverse electromagnetic scattering problems by a doubly periodic structure

Consider the problem of scattering of electromagnetic waves by a doubly periodic structure. The medium above the structure is assumed to be inhomogeneous characterized completely by an index of refraction. Below the structure is a perfect conductor or an imperfect conductor partially coated with a dielectric. Having established the well-posedness of the direct problem by the variational approach, we prove the uniqueness of the inverse problem, that is, the unique determination of the doubly periodic grating with its physical property and the index of refraction from a knowledge of the scattered near field by a countably infinite number of incident quasi-periodic electromagnetic waves. A key ingredient in our proofs is a novel mixed reciprocity relation derived in this paper.

An inverse electromagnetic scattering problem for a bi-periodic inhomogeneous layer on a perfectly conducting plate

This paper is concerned with uniqueness for reconstructing a periodic inhomogeneous medium covered on a perfectly conducting plate. We deal with the problem in the frame of time-harmonic Maxwell systems without TE or TM polarization. An orthogonal relation for two refractive indices is obtained, and then inspired by Kirsch's idea, the refractive index can be identified by utilizing the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of a quasi-periodic Sturm-Liouville eigenvalue problem.

The inverse electromagnetic scattering problem in a piecewise homogeneous medium

This paper is concerned with the problem of scattering of time-harmonic electromagnetic waves from an impenetrable obstacle in a piecewise homogeneous medium. The well-posedness of the direct problem is established, employing the integral equation method. Inspired by a novel idea developed by Hahner [11], we prove that the penetrable interface between layers can be uniquely determined from a knowledge of the electric far field pattern for incident plane waves. Then, using the idea developed by Liu and Zhang [21], a new mixed reciprocity relation is obtained and used to show that the impenetrable obstacle with its physical property can also be recovered. Note that the wave numbers in the corresponding medium may be different and therefore this work can be considered as a generalization of the uniqueness result of [20].
