Perovskite Quantum Organismoids

A central characteristic of living beings is the ability to learn from and respond to their environment leading to habit formation and decision making1-3. This behavior, known as habituation, is universal among forms of life with a central nervous system, and interestingly observed even in single cellular organisms that do not possess a brain4-5. Here, we report the discovery of habituation based plasticity utilizing a perovskite quantum system by dynamical modulation of electron localization via reversible dopant incorporation. Microscopic mechanisms and pathways that enable this organismic collective charge-lattice interaction are elucidated by a combination of first-principles theory, synchrotron investigations, ab-initio dynamical simulations and in-situ environmental breathing studies. We implement a new learning algorithm inspired from the conductance relaxation behavior of perovskites that naturally incorporates habituation and demonstrate "learning to forget": a key feature of animal and human brains6. Most surprisingly, our results show that incorporating this elementary skill in learning dramatically boosts the capability of artificial cognitive systems.

Prominent role of spin-orbit coupling in FeSe

In most existing theories for iron-based superconductors, spin-orbit coupling (SOC) has been assumed insignificant. Even though recent experiments have revealed an influence of SOC on the electronic band structure, whether SOC fundamentally affects magnetism and superconductivity remains an open question. Here we use spin-polarised inelastic neutron scattering to show that collective low-energy spin fluctuations in the orthorhombic (or "nematic") phase of FeSe possess nearly no in-plane component. Such spin-space anisotropy can only be caused by SOC. It is present over an energy range greater than the superconducting gap 2$Δ_\mathrm{sc}$ and gets fully inherited in the superconducting state, resulting in a distinct $c$-axis polarised "spin resonance". Our result demonstrates the importance of SOC in defining the low-energy spin excitations in FeSe, which helps to elucidate the nearby magnetic instabilities and the debated interplay between spin and orbital degrees of freedom. The prominent role of SOC also implies a possible unusual nature of the superconducting state.

Nematic crossover in BaFe$_2$As$_2$ under uniaxial stress

Raman scattering can detect spontaneous point-group symmetry breaking without resorting to single-domain samples. Here we use this technique to study $\mathrm{BaFe_2As_2}$, the parent compound of the "122" Fe-based superconductors. We show that an applied compression along the Fe-Fe direction, which is commonly used to produce untwinned orthorhombic samples, changes the structural phase transition at temperature $T_{\mathrm{s}}$ into a crossover that spans a considerable temperature range above $T_{\mathrm{s}}$. Even in crystals that are not subject to any applied force, a distribution of substantial residual stress remains, which may explain phenomena that are seemingly indicative of symmetry breaking above $T_{\mathrm{s}}$. Our results are consistent with an onset of spontaneous nematicity only below $T_{\mathrm{s}}$.
