Observation of three-state nematicity and domain evolution in atomically-thin antiferromagnetic NiPS3

Nickel phosphorus trisulfide (NiPS3), a van der Waals (vdW) 2D antiferromagnet, has captivated enormous attention for its intriguing physics in recent years. However, despite its fundamental importance in physics of magnetism and promising potential for technological applications, the study of magnetic domains in NiPS3 down to atomically thin is still lacking. Here, we report the layer-dependent magnetic characteristics and magnetic domains within antiferromagnetic NiPS3 by employing linear dichroism (LD) combined with polarized microscopy, spin-correlated photoluminescence (PL), and Raman spectroscopy. Our results reveal the existence of the paramagnetic-to-antiferromagnetic phase transition in bulk to bilayer NiPS3 with stronger spin fluctuation in thinner NiPS3. Furthermore, our study identifies three distinct antiferromagnetic domains within atomicallythin NiPS3 and captures the thermally-activated domain evolution. Our findings provide crucial insights for the development of antiferromagnetic spintronics and related technologies.

Probing magnetism in exfoliated VI$_3$ layers with magnetotransport

We perform magnetotransport experiments on VI$_3$ multilayers, to investigate the relation between ferromagnetism in bulk and in exfoliated layers. The magnetoconductance measured on field-effect transistors and tunnel barriers shows that the Curie temperature of exfoliated multilayers is $T_C$ = 57 K, larger than in bulk ($T_{\rm C,bulk}$ = 50 K). Below $T \approx$ 40 K, we observe an unusual evolution of the tunneling magnetoconductance, analogous to the phenomenology observed in bulk. Comparing the magnetoconductance measured for fields applied in- or out-of-plane corroborates the analogy, allows us to determine that the orientation of the easy-axis in multilayers is similar to that in bulk, and suggests that the in-plane component of the magnetization points in different directions in different layers. Besides establishing that the magnetic state of bulk and multilayers are similar, our experiments illustrate the complementarity of magnetotransport and magneto-optical measurements to probe magnetism in 2D materials.

Phonon-assisted formation of an itinerant electronic density wave

Electronic instabilities drive ordering transitions in condensed matter. Despite many advances in the microscopic understanding of the ordered states, a more nuanced and profound question often remains unanswered: how do the collective excitations influence the electronic order formation? Here, we experimentally show that a phonon affects the spin density wave (SDW) formation after an SDW-quench by femtosecond laser pulses. In a thin film, the temperature-dependent SDW period is quantized, allowing us to track the out-of-equilibrium formation path of the SDW precisely. By exploiting its persistent coupling to the lattice, we probe the SDW through the transient lattice distortion, measured by femtosecond X-ray diffraction. We find that within 500 femtoseconds after a complete quench, the SDW forms with the low-temperature period, directly bypassing a thermal state with the high-temperature period. We argue that a momentum-matched phonon launched by the quench changes the formation path of the SDW through the dynamic pinning of the order parameter.
