Non-monotonic thickness dependence of Curie temperature and ferroelectricity in Two-dimensional SnTe film

Recently, the observation of atomic thin film SnTe with a Curie temperature (Tc) higher than that of the bulk (Chang et. al., Science 353, 274 (2016)) has boosted the research on two-dimensional (2D) ferroic materials tremendously. However, the origin of such phenomenon has yet been thoroughly investigated, which hinder the understanding and design of novel materials with ferroic orders at 2D limit. By using the density functional theory, we investigated the structural and ferroelectrical properties of 2D SnTe, to reveal the thickness dependence. The calculated results demonstrate that the 2D SnTe automatically transform into periodical bilayer structure, resulting from the surface effect. Moreover, based on the double-well potential and atomic distortion analysis, we found the Tc of the 2D SnTe is higher than the bulk counterpart, and more surprisingly, the Tc exhibits an unusual non-monotonous dependence of thickness, featuring a pronounced atomic distortion and Curie temperature maximum at 8 atomic-layers. In addition, this non-monotonous dependence is sensitive to the external strain and it can be tuned easily by the external compressive strain.

Phonon anharmonicity and negative thermal expansion in SnSe

The anharmonic phonon properties of SnSe in the Pnma phase were investigated with a combination of experiments and first-principles simulations. Using inelastic neutron scattering (INS) and nuclear resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (NRIXS), we have measured the phonon dispersions and density of states (DOS) and their temperature dependence, which revealed a strong, inhomogeneous shift and broadening of the spectrum on warming. First-principles simulations were performed to rationalize these measurements, and to explain the previously reported anisotropic thermal expansion, in particular the negative thermal expansion within the Sn-Se bilayers. Including the anisotropic strain dependence of the phonon free energy, in addition to the electronic ground state energy, is essential to reproduce the negative thermal expansion. From the phonon DOS obtained with INS and additional calorimetry measurements, we quantify the harmonic, dilational, and anharmonic components of the phonon entropy, heat capacity, and free energy. The origin of the anharmonic phonon thermodynamics is linked to the electronic structure.

Electronic Instability and Anharmonicity in SnSe

The binary compound SnSe exhibits record high thermoelectric performance, largely because of its very low thermal conductivity. The origin of the strong phonon anharmonicity leading to the low thermal conductivity of SnSe is investigated through first-principles calculations of the electronic structure and phonons. It is shown that a Jahn-Teller instability of the electronic structure is responsible for the high-temperature lattice distortion between the Cmcm and Pnma phases. The coupling of phonon modes and the phase transition mechanism are elucidated, emphasizing the connection with hybrid improper ferroelectrics. This coupled instability of electronic orbitals and lattice dynamics is the origin of the strong anharmonicity causing the ultralow thermal conductivity in SnSe. Exploiting such bonding instabilities to generate strong anharmonicity may provide a new rational to design efficient thermoelectric materials.

Analytical method to determine flexoelectric coupling coefficient at nanoscale

Flexoelectricity is defined as the coupling between strain gradient and polarization, which is expected to be remarkable at nanoscale. However, measuring the flexoelectricity at nanoscale is challenging. In the present work, an analytical method for measuring the flexoelectric coupling coefficient based on nanocompression technique is proposed. It is found that the flexoelectricity can induce stiffness softening of dielectric nano-cone-frustum. This phenomenon becomes more significant when the sample size decreases or the half cone angle increases. This method avoids measuring the electric polarization or current at nanoscale with dynamical loading, which can be beneficial to the flexoelectric measurement at nanoscale and design of flexoelectric nanodevices.

First-principles theory and calculation of flexoelectricity

We develop a general and unified first-principles theory of piezoelectric and flexoelectric tensor, formulated in such a way that the tensor elements can be computed directly in the context of density-functional calculations, including electronic and lattice contributions. We introduce a practical supercell-based methods for calculating the flexoelectric coefficients from first principles, and demonstrate them by computing the coefficients for a variety of cubic insulating materials, including C, Si, MgO, NaCl, CsCl, BaZrO3, BaTiO3, PbTiO3 and SrTiO3.

Electrically driven octahedral rotations in SrTiO3 and PbTiO3

We investigate the oxygen octahedral rotations that occur in two perovskites, SrTiO3 and PbTiO3, as a function of applied three-dimensional electric displacement field, allowing us to map out the phase diagram of rotations in both the paraelectric and ferroelectric regions of the polar response. First-principles calculations at fixed electric displacement field are used to extract parameters of a Landau-Devonshire model that is analyzed to identify the phase boundaries between different rotational states. The calculations reveal a rich phase diagram of rotations versus applied field in both SrTiO3 and PbTiO3, although the details are quite different in the two cases.

External uniform electric field removing flexoelectric effect in epitaxial ferroelectric thin films

Using the modified Landau-Ginsburg-Devonshire thermodynamic theory, it is found that the coupling between stress gradient and polarization, or flexoelectricity, has significant effect on ferroelectric properties of epitaxial thin films, such as polarization, free energy profile and hysteresis loop. However, this effect can be completely eliminated by applying an optimized external, uniform electric field. The role of such uniform electric field is shown to be the same as that of an ideal gradient electric field which can suppress the flexoelectricty effect completely based on the present theory. Since the uniform electric field is more convenient to apply and control than gradient electric field, it can be potentially used to remove the flexoelectric effect induced by stress gradient in epitaxial thin films and enhance the ferroelectric properties.

Flexoelectricity induced increase of critical thickness in epitaxial ferroelectric thin films

Flexoelectricity describes the coupling between polarization and strain/stress gradients in insulating crystals. In this paper, using the Landau-Ginsburg-Devonshire phenomenological approach, we found that flexoelectricity could increase the theoretical critical thickness in epitaxial BaTiO3 thin films, below which the switchable spontaneous polarization vanishes. This increase is remarkable in tensile films while trivial in compressive films due to the electrostriction caused decrease of potential barrier, which can be easily destroyed by the flexoelectricity, between the ferroelectric state and the paraelectric state in tensile films. In addition, the films are still in a uni-polar state even below the critical thickness due to the flexoelectric effect.

Spin-phonon coupling effects in transition-metal perovskites:a DFT+$U$ and hybrid-functional study

Spin-phonon coupling effects, as reflected in phonon frequency shifts between ferromagnetic (FM) and G-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) configurations in cubic CaMnO$_3$, SrMnO$_3$, BaMnO$_3$, LaCrO$_3$, LaFeO$_3$ and La$_2$(CrFe)O$_6$, are investigated using density-functional methods. The calculations are carried out both with a hybrid-functional (HSE) approach and with a DFT+$U$ approach using a $U$ that has been fitted to HSE calculations. The phonon frequency shifts obtained in going from the FM to the AFM spin configuration agree well with those computed directly from the more accurate HSE approach, but are obtained with much less computational effort. We find that in the $A$MnO$_3$ materials class with $A$=Ca, Sr, and Ba, this frequency shift decreases as the A cation radius increases for the $Γ$ phonons, while it increases for R-point phonons. In La$M$O$_3$ with $M$=Cr, Fe, and Cr/Fe, the phonon frequencies at $Γ$ decrease as the spin order changes from AFM to FM for LaCrO$_3$ and LaFeO$_3$, but they increase for the double perovskite La$_2$(CrFe)O$_6$. We discuss these results and the prospects for bulk and superlattice forms of these materials to be useful as multiferroics.

Mapping the energy surface of PbTiO3 in multidimensional electric-displacement space

In recent years, methods have been developed that allow first-principles electronic-structure calculations to be carried out under conditions of fixed electric field. For some purposes, however, it is more convenient to work at fixed electric displacement field. Initial implementations of the fixed-displacement-field approach have been limited to constraining the field along one spatial dimension only. Here, we generalize this approach to treat the full three-dimensional displacement field as a constraint, and compute the internal-energy landscape as a function of this multidimensional displacement-field vector. Using PbTiO3 as a prototypical system, we identify stable or metastable tetragonal, orthorhombic and rhombohedral structures as the displacement field evolves along [001], [110] and [111] directions, respectively. The energy minimum along [001] is found to be deeper than that along [110] or [111], as expected for a system having a tetragonal ground state. The barriers connecting these minima are found to be quite small, consistent with the current understanding that the large piezoelectric effects in PbTiO3 arise from the easy rotation of the polarization vector.

First-principles theory of frozen-ion flexoelectricity

We demonstrate that the frozen-ion contribution to the flexoelectric coefficient is given solely in terms of the sum of third moments of the charge density distortions induced by atomic displacements, even for ferroelectric or piezoelectric materials. We introduce several practical supercell-based methods for calculating these coefficients from first principles, and demonstrate them by computing the coefficients for C, Si, MgO, NaCl, SrTiO$_3$, BaTiO$_3$, and PbTiO$_3$. Three important subtleties associated with pseudopotentials, the treatment of surfaces, and the calculation of transverse components are also discussed.
