Efficient evaluation of noncommutative polynomials using tensor and noncommutative Waring decompositions

This paper analyses a Waring type decomposition of a noncommuting (NC) polynomial $p$ with respect to the goal of evaluating $p$ efficiently on tuples of matrices. Such a decomposition can reduce the number of matrix multiplications needed to evaluate a noncommutative polynomial and is valuable when a single polynomial must be evaluated on many matrix tuples. In pursuit of this goal we examine a noncommutative analog of the classical Waring problem and various related decompositions. For example, we consider a "Waring decomposition" in which each product of linear terms is actually a power of a single linear NC polynomial or more generally a power of a homogeneous NC polynomial. We describe how NC polynomials compare to commutative ones with regard to these decompositions, describe a method for computing the NC decompositions and compare the effect of various decompositions on the speed of evaluation of generic NC polynomials.

Separability of Hermitian Tensors and PSD Decompositions

Hermitian tensors are natural generalizations of Hermitian matrices, while possessing rather different properties. A Hermitian tensor is separable if it has a Hermitian decomposition with only positive coefficients, i.e., it is a sum of rank-1 psd Hermitian tensors. This paper studies how to detect separability of Hermitian tensors. It is equivalent to the long-standing quantum separability problem in quantum physics, which asks to tell if a given quantum state is entangled or not. We formulate this as a truncated moment problem and then provide a semidefinite relaxation algorithm to solve it. Moreover, we study psd decompositions of separable Hermitian tensors. When the psd rank is low, we first flatten them into cubic order tensors and then apply tensor decomposition methods to compute psd decompositions. We prove that this method works well if the psd rank is low. In computation, this flattening approach can detect separability for much larger sized Hermitian tensors. This method is a good start on determining psd ranks of separable Hermitian tensors.

A Lagrange Multiplier Expression Method for Bilevel Polynomial Optimization

This paper studies bilevel polynomial optimization problems. To solve them, we give a method based on polynomial optimization relaxations. Each relaxation is obtained from the Kurash-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) conditions for the lower level optimization and the exchange technique for semi-infinite programming. For KKT conditions, Lagrange multipliers are represented as polynomial or rational functions. The Moment-SOS relaxations are used to solve the polynomial optimizattion relaxations. Under some general assumptions, we prove the convergence of the algorithm for solving bilevel polynomial optimization problems. Numerical experiments are presented to show the efficiency of the method.

The Saddle Point Problem of Polynomials

This paper studies the saddle point problem of polynomials. We give an algorithm for computing saddle points. It is based on solving Lasserre's hierarchy of semidefinite relaxations. Under some genericity assumptions on defining polynomials, we show that: i) if there exists a saddle point, our algorithm can get one by solving a finite number of Lasserre type semidefinite relaxations; ii) if there is no saddle point, our algorithm can detect its nonexistence.

Learning Diagonal Gaussian Mixture Models and Incomplete Tensor Decompositions

This paper studies how to learn parameters in diagonal Gaussian mixture models. The problem can be formulated as computing incomplete symmetric tensor decompositions. We use generating polynomials to compute incomplete symmetric tensor decompositions and approximations. Then the tensor approximation method is used to learn diagonal Gaussian mixture models. We also do the stability analysis. When the first and third order moments are sufficiently accurate, we show that the obtained parameters for the Gaussian mixture models are also highly accurate. Numerical experiments are also provided.

The Gauss-Seidel Method for Generalized Nash Equilibrium Problems of Polynomials

This paper concerns the generalized Nash equilibrium problem of polynomials (GNEPP). We apply the Gauss-Seidel method and Lasserre type Moment-SOS relaxations to solve GNEPPs. The convergence of the Gauss-Seidel method is known for some special GNEPPs, such as generalized potential games (GPGs). We give a sufficient condition for GPGs and propose a numerical certificate, based on Putinar's Positivstellensatz. Numerical examples for both convex and nonconvex GNEPPs are given for demonstrating the efficiency of the proposed method.

Hermitian Tensor Decompositions

Hermitian tensors are generalizations of Hermitian matrices, but they have very different properties. Every complex Hermitian tensor is a sum of complex Hermitian rank-1 tensors. However, this is not true for the real case. We study basic properties for Hermitian tensors such as Hermitian decompositions and Hermitian ranks. For canonical basis tensors, we determine their Hermitian ranks and decompositions. For real Hermitian tensors, we give a full characterization for them to have Hermitian decompositions over the real field. In addition to traditional flattening, Hermitian tensors specially have Hermitian and Kronecker flattenings, which may give different lower bounds for Hermitian ranks. We also study other topics such as eigenvalues, positive semidefiniteness, sum of squares representations, and separability.

Symmetric Tensor Decompositions On Varieties

This paper discusses the problem of symmetric tensor decomposition on a given variety $X$: decomposing a symmetric tensor into the sum of tensor powers of vectors contained in $X$. In this paper, we first study geometric and algebraic properties of such decomposable tensors, which are crucial to the practical computations of such decompositions. For a given tensor, we also develop a criterion for the existence of a symmetric decomposition on $X$. Secondly and most importantly, we propose a method for computing symmetric tensor decompositions on an arbitrary $X$. As a specific application, Vandermonde decompositions for nonsymmetric tensors can be computed by the proposed algorithm.

Hankel tensor decompositions and ranks

Hankel tensors are generalizations of Hankel matrices. This article studies the relations among various ranks of Hankel tensors. We give an algorithm that can compute the Vandermonde ranks and decompositions for all Hankel tensors. For a generic $n$-dimensional Hankel tensor of even order or order three, we prove that the the cp rank, symmetric rank, border rank, symmetric border rank, and Vandermonde rank all coincide with each other. In particular, this implies that the Comon's conjecture is true for generic Hankel tensors when the order is even or three. Some open questions are also posed.

Completely Positive Binary Tensors

A symmetric tensor is completely positive (CP) if it is a sum of tensor powers of nonnegative vectors. This paper characterizes completely positive binary tensors. We show that a binary tensor is completely positive if and only if it satisfies two linear matrix inequalities. This result can be used to determine whether a binary tensor is completely positive or not. When it is, we give an algorithm for computing its cp-rank and the decomposition. When the order is odd, we show that the cp-rank decomposition is unique. When the order is even, we completely characterize when the cp-rank decomposition is unique. We also discuss how to compute the nearest cp-approximation when a binary tensor is not completely positive.

Tight Relaxations for Polynomial Optimization and Lagrange Multiplier Expressions

This paper proposes tight semidefinite relaxations for polynomial optimization. The optimality conditions are investigated. We show that generally Lagrange multipliers can be expressed as polynomial functions in decision variables over the set of critical points. The polynomial expressions can be determined by linear equations. Based on these expressions, new Lasserre type semidefinite relaxations are constructed for solving polynomial optimization. We show that the hierarchy of new relaxations has finite convergence, or equivalently, the new relaxations are tight for a finite relaxation order.

A Matrix Positivstellensatz with lifting polynomials

Given the projections of two semialgebraic sets defined by polynomial matrix inequalities, it is in general difficult to determine whether one is contained in the other. To address this issue we propose a new matrix Positivstellensatz that uses lifting polynomials. Under the classical archimedean condition and some mild natural assumptions, we prove that such a containment holds if and only if the proposed matrix Positivstellensatz is satisfied. The corresponding certificate can be searched for by solving a semidefinite program. An important application is to certify when a spectrahedrop (i.e., the projection of a spectrahedron) is contained in another one.

A Complete Semidefinite Algorithm for Detecting Copositive Matrices and Tensors

A real symmetric matrix (resp., tensor) is said to be copositive if the associated quadratic (resp., homogeneous) form is greater than or equal to zero over the nonnegative orthant. The problem of detecting their copositivity is NP-hard. This paper proposes a complete semidefinite relaxation algorithm for detecting the copositivity of a matrix or tensor. If it is copositive, the algorithm can get a certificate for the copositivity. If it is not, the algorithm can get a point that refutes the copositivity. We show that the detection can be done by solving a finite number of semidefinite relaxations, for all matrices and tensors.

Low Rank Symmetric Tensor Approximations

For a given symmetric tensor, we aim at finding a new one whose symmetric rank is small and that is close to the given one. There exist linear relations among the entries of low rank symmetric tensors. Such linear relations can be expressed by polynomials, which are called generating polynomials. We propose a new approach for computing low rank approximations by using generating polynomials. First, we estimate a set of generating polynomials that are approximately satisfied by the given tensor. Second, we find approximate common zeros of these polynomials. Third, we use these zeros to construct low rank tensor approximations. If the symmetric tensor to be approximated is sufficiently close to a low rank one, we show that the computed low rank approximations are quasi-optimal.

The Split Feasibility Problem with Polynomials

This paper discusses the split feasibility problem with polynomials. The sets are semi-algebraic, defined by polynomial inequalities. They can be either convex or nonconvex, either feasible or infeasible. We give semidefinite relaxations for representing the intersection of the sets. Properties of the semidefinite relaxations are studied. Based on that, a semidefinite relaxation algorithm is given for solving the split feasibility problem. Under a general condition, we prove that: if the split feasibility problem is feasible, we can get a feasible point; if it is infeasible, we can obtain a certificate for the infeasibility. Some numerical examples are given.

Tensor Eigenvalue Complementarity Problems

This paper studies tensor eigenvalue complementarity problems. Basic properties of standard and complementarity tensor eigenvalues are discussed. We formulate tensor eigenvalue complementarity problems as constrained polynomial optimization. When one tensor is strictly copositive, the complementarity eigenvalues can be computed by solving polynomial optimization with normalization by strict copositivity. When no tensor is strictly copositive, we formulate the tensor eigenvalue complementarity problem equivalently as polynomial optimization by a randomization process. The complementarity eigenvalues can be computed sequentially. The formulated polynomial optimization can be solved by Lasserre's hierarchy of semidefinite relaxations. We show that it has finite convergence for general tensors. Numerical experiments are presented to show the efficiency of proposed methods.

Bilevel Polynomial Programs and Semidefinite Relaxation Methods

A bilevel program is an optimization problem whose constraints involve another optimization problem. This paper studies bilevel polynomial programs (BPPs), i.e., all the functions are polynomials. We reformulate BPPs equivalently as semi-infinite polynomial programs (SIPPs), using Fritz John conditions and Jacobian representations. Combining the exchange technique and Lasserre type semidefinite relaxations, we propose numerical methods for solving both simple and general BPPs. For simple BPPs, we prove the convergence to global optimal solutions. Numerical experiments are presented to show the efficiency of proposed algorithms.
