Relating chemical bonding to physical properties: The origin of unexpected isotropic properties in layered materials

Layered materials span a very broad range of solids ranging from van der Waals materials to highly complex crystal structures such as clays. They are commonly believed to have highly anisotropic properties, which is essentially attributed to weak interlayer interactions. The layered Mg3Sb2 structure is currently being intensely scrutinized due to its outstanding thermoelectric properties. Based on quantitative chemical bonding analysis we unravel that Mg3Sb2 exhibits a nearly isotropic three-dimensional (3D) bonding network with the interlayer and intralayer bonds being surprisingly similar, and these unique chemical bonding features are the origin of the nearly isotropic structural and thermal properties. The isotropic 3D bonding network is found to be broadly applicable to many Mg-containing compounds with the layered CaAl2Si2-type structure. Intriguingly, a parameter based on the electron density can be used as an indicator measuring the anisotropy of lattice thermal conductivity in layered structures. This work extends our understanding of structure and properties based on chemical bonding analysis, and it will guide the search for, and design of, layered materials with tailored anisotropic properties.

Optimal Design of Process Flexibility for General Production Systems

Process flexibility is widely adopted as an effective strategy for responding to uncertain demand. Many algorithms for constructing sparse flexibility designs with good theoretical guarantees have been developed for balanced and symmetrical production systems. These systems assume that the number of plants equals the number of products, that supplies have the same capacity, and that demands are independently and identically distributed. In this paper, we relax these assumptions and consider a general class of production systems. We construct a simple flexibility design to fulfill $(1-ε)$-fraction of expected demand with high probability (w.h.p.) where the average degree is $O(\ln(1/ε))$. To motivate our construction, we first consider a natural weighted probabilistic construction from Chou et al. (2011) where the degree of each node is proportional to its expected capacity. However, this strategy is shown to be sub-optimal. To obtain an optimal construction, we develop a simple yet effective thresholding scheme. The analysis of our approach extends the classical analysis of expander graphs by overcoming several technical difficulties. Our approach may prove useful in other applications that require expansion properties of graphs with non-uniform degree sequences.

SEGEN: Sample-Ensemble Genetic Evolutional Network Model

Deep learning, a rebranding of deep neural network research works, has achieved a remarkable success in recent years. With multiple hidden layers, deep learning models aim at computing the hierarchical feature representations of the observational data. Meanwhile, due to its severe disadvantages in data consumption, computational resources, parameter tuning costs and the lack of result explainability, deep learning has also suffered from lots of criticism. In this paper, we will introduce a new representation learning model, namely "Sample-Ensemble Genetic Evolutionary Network" (SEGEN), which can serve as an alternative approach to deep learning models. Instead of building one single deep model, based on a set of sampled sub-instances, SEGEN adopts a genetic-evolutionary learning strategy to build a group of unit models generations by generations. The unit models incorporated in SEGEN can be either traditional machine learning models or the recent deep learning models with a much "narrower" and "shallower" architecture. The learning results of each instance at the final generation will be effectively combined from each unit model via diffusive propagation and ensemble learning strategies. From the computational perspective, SEGEN requires far less data, fewer computational resources and parameter tuning efforts, but has sound theoretic interpretability of the learning process and results. Extensive experiments have been done on several different real-world benchmark datasets, and the experimental results obtained by SEGEN have demonstrated its advantages over the state-of-the-art representation learning models.

r-Instance Learning for Missing People Tweets Identification

The number of missing people (i.e., people who get lost) greatly increases in recent years. It is a serious worldwide problem, and finding the missing people consumes a large amount of social resources. In tracking and finding these missing people, timely data gathering and analysis actually play an important role. With the development of social media, information about missing people can get propagated through the web very quickly, which provides a promising way to solve the problem. The information in online social media is usually of heterogeneous categories, involving both complex social interactions and textual data of diverse structures. Effective fusion of these different types of information for addressing the missing people identification problem can be a great challenge. Motivated by the multi-instance learning problem and existing social science theory of "homophily", in this paper, we propose a novel r-instance (RI) learning model.

Understanding and Monitoring Human Trafficking via Social Sensors: A Sociological Approach

Human trafficking is a serious social problem, and it is challenging mainly because of its difficulty in collecting and organizing related information. With the increasing popularity of social media platforms, it provides us a novel channel to tackle the problem of human trafficking through detecting and analyzing a large amount of human trafficking related information. Existing supervised learning methods cannot be directly applied to this problem due to the distinct characteristics of the social media data. First, the short, noisy, and unstructured textual information makes traditional learning algorithms less effective in detecting human trafficking related tweets. Second, complex social interactions lead to a high-dimensional feature space and thus present great computational challenges. In the meanwhile, social sciences theories such as homophily have been well established and achieved success in various social media mining applications. Motivated by the sociological findings, in this paper, we propose to investigate whether the Network Structure Information (NSI) could be potentially helpful for the human trafficking problem. In particular, a novel mathematical optimization framework is proposed to integrate the network structure into content modeling. Experimental results on a real-world dataset demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed framework in detecting human trafficking related information.

EgoCoder: Intelligent Program Synthesis with Hierarchical Sequential Neural Network Model

Programming has been an important skill for researchers and practitioners in computer science and other related areas. To learn basic programing skills, a long-time systematic training is usually required for beginners. According to a recent market report, the computer software market is expected to continue expanding at an accelerating speed, but the market supply of qualified software developers can hardly meet such a huge demand. In recent years, the surge of text generation research works provides the opportunities to address such a dilemma through automatic program synthesis. In this paper, we propose to make our try to solve the program synthesis problem from a data mining perspective. To address the problem, a novel generative model, namely EgoCoder, will be introduced in this paper. EgoCoder effectively parses program code into abstract syntax trees (ASTs), where the tree nodes will contain the program code/comment content and the tree structure can capture the program logic flows. Based on a new unit model called Hsu, EgoCoder can effectively capture both the hierarchical and sequential patterns in the program ASTs. Extensive experiments will be done to compare EgoCoder with the state-of-the-art text generation methods, and the experimental results have demonstrated the effectiveness of EgoCoder in addressing the program synthesis problem.

Learning Selfie-Friendly Abstraction from Artistic Style Images

Artistic style transfer can be thought as a process to generate different versions of abstraction of the original image. However, most of the artistic style transfer operators are not optimized for human faces thus mainly suffers from two undesirable features when applying them to selfies. First, the edges of human faces may unpleasantly deviate from the ones in the original image. Second, the skin color is far from faithful to the original one which is usually problematic in producing quality selfies. In this paper, we take a different approach and formulate this abstraction process as a gradient domain learning problem. We aim to learn a type of abstraction which not only achieves the specified artistic style but also circumvents the two aforementioned drawbacks thus highly applicable to selfie photography. We also show that our method can be directly generalized to videos with high inter-frame consistency. Our method is also robust to non-selfie images, and the generalization to various kinds of real-life scenes is discussed. We will make our code publicly available.

On Deep Ensemble Learning from a Function Approximation Perspective

In this paper, we propose to provide a general ensemble learning framework based on deep learning models. Given a group of unit models, the proposed deep ensemble learning framework will effectively combine their learning results via a multilayered ensemble model. In the case when the unit model mathematical mappings are bounded, sigmoidal and discriminatory, we demonstrate that the deep ensemble learning framework can achieve a universal approximation of any functions from the input space to the output space. Meanwhile, to achieve such a performance, the deep ensemble learning framework also impose a strict constraint on the number of involved unit models. According to the theoretic proof provided in this paper, given the input feature space of dimension d, the required unit model number will be 2d, if the ensemble model involves one single layer. Furthermore, as the ensemble component goes deeper, the number of required unit model is proved to be lowered down exponentially.

Reconciled Polynomial Machine: A Unified Representation of Shallow and Deep Learning Models

In this paper, we aim at introducing a new machine learning model, namely reconciled polynomial machine, which can provide a unified representation of existing shallow and deep machine learning models. Reconciled polynomial machine predicts the output by computing the inner product of the feature kernel function and variable reconciling function. Analysis of several concrete models, including Linear Models, FM, MVM, Perceptron, MLP and Deep Neural Networks, will be provided in this paper, which can all be reduced to the reconciled polynomial machine representations. Detailed analysis of the learning error by these models will also be illustrated in this paper based on their reduced representations from the function approximation perspective.

GEN Model: An Alternative Approach to Deep Neural Network Models

In this paper, we introduce an alternative approach, namely GEN (Genetic Evolution Network) Model, to the deep learning models. Instead of building one single deep model, GEN adopts a genetic-evolutionary learning strategy to build a group of unit models generations by generations. Significantly different from the wellknown representation learning models with extremely deep structures, the unit models covered in GEN are of a much shallower architecture. In the training process, from each generation, a subset of unit models will be selected based on their performance to evolve and generate the child models in the next generation. GEN has significant advantages compared with existing deep representation learning models in terms of both learning effectiveness, efficiency and interpretability of the learning process and learned results. Extensive experiments have been done on diverse benchmark datasets, and the experimental results have demonstrated the outstanding performance of GEN compared with the state-of-the-art baseline methods in both effectiveness of efficiency.

Learning Dual Convolutional Neural Networks for Low-Level Vision

In this paper, we propose a general dual convolutional neural network (DualCNN) for low-level vision problems, e.g., super-resolution, edge-preserving filtering, deraining and dehazing. These problems usually involve the estimation of two components of the target signals: structures and details. Motivated by this, our proposed DualCNN consists of two parallel branches, which respectively recovers the structures and details in an end-to-end manner. The recovered structures and details can generate the target signals according to the formation model for each particular application. The DualCNN is a flexible framework for low-level vision tasks and can be easily incorporated into existing CNNs. Experimental results show that the DualCNN can be effectively applied to numerous low-level vision tasks with favorable performance against the state-of-the-art methods.

Social Network Fusion and Mining: A Survey

Looking from a global perspective, the landscape of online social networks is highly fragmented. A large number of online social networks have appeared, which can provide users with various types of services. Generally, the information available in these online social networks is of diverse categories, which can be represented as heterogeneous social networks (HSN) formally. Meanwhile, in such an age of online social media, users usually participate in multiple online social networks simultaneously to enjoy more social networks services, who can act as bridges connecting different networks together. So multiple HSNs not only represent information in single network, but also fuse information from multiple networks. Formally, the online social networks sharing common users are named as the aligned social networks, and these shared users who act like anchors aligning the networks are called the anchor users. The heterogeneous information generated by users' social activities in the multiple aligned social networks provides social network practitioners and researchers with the opportunities to study individual user's social behaviors across multiple social platforms simultaneously. This paper presents a comprehensive survey about the latest research works on multiple aligned HSNs studies based on the broad learning setting, which covers 5 major research tasks, i.e., network alignment, link prediction, community detection, information diffusion and network embedding respectively.

Gated Fusion Network for Single Image Dehazing

In this paper, we propose an efficient algorithm to directly restore a clear image from a hazy input. The proposed algorithm hinges on an end-to-end trainable neural network that consists of an encoder and a decoder. The encoder is exploited to capture the context of the derived input images, while the decoder is employed to estimate the contribution of each input to the final dehazed result using the learned representations attributed to the encoder. The constructed network adopts a novel fusion-based strategy which derives three inputs from an original hazy image by applying White Balance (WB), Contrast Enhancing (CE), and Gamma Correction (GC). We compute pixel-wise confidence maps based on the appearance differences between these different inputs to blend the information of the derived inputs and preserve the regions with pleasant visibility. The final dehazed image is yielded by gating the important features of the derived inputs. To train the network, we introduce a multi-scale approach such that the halo artifacts can be avoided. Extensive experimental results on both synthetic and real-world images demonstrate that the proposed algorithm performs favorably against the state-of-the-art algorithms.

BL-MNE: Emerging Heterogeneous Social Network Embedding through Broad Learning with Aligned Autoencoder

Network embedding aims at projecting the network data into a low-dimensional feature space, where the nodes are represented as a unique feature vector and network structure can be effectively preserved. In recent years, more and more online application service sites can be represented as massive and complex networks, which are extremely challenging for traditional machine learning algorithms to deal with. Effective embedding of the complex network data into low-dimension feature representation can both save data storage space and enable traditional machine learning algorithms applicable to handle the network data. Network embedding performance will degrade greatly if the networks are of a sparse structure, like the emerging networks with few connections. In this paper, we propose to learn the embedding representation for a target emerging network based on the broad learning setting, where the emerging network is aligned with other external mature networks at the same time. To solve the problem, a new embedding framework, namely "Deep alIgned autoencoder based eMbEdding" (DIME), is introduced in this paper. DIME handles the diverse link and attribute in a unified analytic based on broad learning, and introduces the multiple aligned attributed heterogeneous social network concept to model the network structure. A set of meta paths are introduced in the paper, which define various kinds of connections among users via the heterogeneous link and attribute information. The closeness among users in the networks are defined as the meta proximity scores, which will be fed into DIME to learn the embedding vectors of users in the emerging network. Extensive experiments have been done on real-world aligned social networks, which have demonstrated the effectiveness of DIME in learning the emerging network embedding vectors.

BL-ECD: Broad Learning based Enterprise Community Detection via Hierarchical Structure Fusion

Employees in companies can be divided into di erent communities, and those who frequently socialize with each other will be treated as close friends and are grouped in the same community. In the enterprise context, a large amount of information about the employees is available in both (1) o ine company internal sources and (2) online enterprise social networks (ESNs). Each of the information sources also contain multiple categories of employees' socialization activities at the same time. In this paper, we propose to detect the social communities of the employees in companies based on the broad learning se ing with both these online and o ine information sources simultaneously, and the problem is formally called the "Broad Learning based Enterprise Community Detection" (BL-Ecd) problem. To address the problem, a novel broad learning based community detection framework named "HeterogeneoUs Multi-sOurce ClusteRing" (Humor) is introduced in this paper. Based on the various enterprise social intimacy measures introduced in this paper, Humor detects a set of micro community structures of the employees based on each of the socialization activities respectively. To obtain the (globally) consistent community structure of employees in the company, Humor further fuses these micro community structures via two broad learning phases: (1) intra-fusion of micro community structures to obtain the online and o ine (locally) consistent communities respectively, and (2) inter-fusion of the online and o ine communities to achieve the (globally) consistent community structure of employees. Extensive experiments conducted on real-world enterprise datasets demonstrate our method can perform very well in addressing the BL-Ecd problem.

Contaminant Removal for Android Malware Detection Systems

A recent report indicates that there is a new malicious app introduced every 4 seconds. This rapid malware distribution rate causes existing malware detection systems to fall far behind, allowing malicious apps to escape vetting efforts and be distributed by even legitimate app stores. When trusted downloading sites distribute malware, several negative consequences ensue. First, the popularity of these sites would allow such malicious apps to quickly and widely infect devices. Second, analysts and researchers who rely on machine learning based detection techniques may also download these apps and mistakenly label them as benign since they have not been disclosed as malware. These apps are then used as part of their benign dataset during model training and testing. The presence of contaminants in benign dataset can compromise the effectiveness and accuracy of their detection and classification techniques. To address this issue, we introduce PUDROID (Positive and Unlabeled learning-based malware detection for Android) to automatically and effectively remove contaminants from training datasets, allowing machine learning based malware classifiers and detectors to be more effective and accurate. To further improve the performance of such detectors, we apply a feature selection strategy to select pertinent features from a variety of features. We then compare the detection rates and accuracy of detection systems using two datasets; one using PUDROID to remove contaminants and the other without removing contaminants. The results indicate that once we remove contaminants from the datasets, we can significantly improve both malware detection rate and detection accuracy

Learning to Hallucinate Face Images via Component Generation and Enhancement

We propose a two-stage method for face hallucination. First, we generate facial components of the input image using CNNs. These components represent the basic facial structures. Second, we synthesize fine-grained facial structures from high resolution training images. The details of these structures are transferred into facial components for enhancement. Therefore, we generate facial components to approximate ground truth global appearance in the first stage and enhance them through recovering details in the second stage. The experiments demonstrate that our method performs favorably against state-of-the-art methods

Fast Preprocessing for Robust Face Sketch Synthesis

Exemplar-based face sketch synthesis methods usually meet the challenging problem that input photos are captured in different lighting conditions from training photos. The critical step causing the failure is the search of similar patch candidates for an input photo patch. Conventional illumination invariant patch distances are adopted rather than directly relying on pixel intensity difference, but they will fail when local contrast within a patch changes. In this paper, we propose a fast preprocessing method named Bidirectional Luminance Remapping (BLR), which interactively adjust the lighting of training and input photos. Our method can be directly integrated into state-of-the-art exemplar-based methods to improve their robustness with ignorable computational cost.
