Concatenation of the Gottesman-Kitaev-Preskill code with the XZZX surface code

Bosonic codes provide an alternative option for quantum error correction. An important category of bosonic codes called the Gottesman-Kitaev-Preskill (GKP) code has aroused much interest recently. Theoretically, the error correction ability of GKP code is limited since it can only correct small shift errors in position and momentum quadratures. A natural approach to promote the GKP error correction for large-scale, fault-tolerant quantum computation is concatenating encoded GKP states with a stabilizer code. The performance of the XZZX surface-GKP code, i.e., the single-mode GKP code concatenated with the XZZX surface code is investigated in this paper under two different noise models. Firstly, in the code-capacity noise model, the asymmetric rectangular GKP code with parameter $λ$ is introduced. Using the minimum weight perfect matching decoder combined with the continuous-variable GKP information, the optimal threshold of the XZZX-surface GKP code reaches $σ\approx0.67$ when $λ=2.1$, compared with the threshold $σ\approx0.60$ of the standard surface-GKP code. Secondly, we analyze the shift errors of two-qubit gates in the actual implementation and build the full circuit-level noise model. By setting the appropriate bias parameters, the logical error rate is reduced by several times in some cases. These results indicate the XZZX surface-GKP codes are more suitable for asymmetric concatenation under the general noise models. We also estimate the overhead of the XZZX-surface GKP code which uses about 291 GKP states with the noise parameter 18.5 dB ($κ/g \approx 0.71\%$) to encode a logical qubit with the error rate $2.53\times10^{-7}$, compared with the qubit-based surface code using 3041 qubits to achieve almost the same logical error rate.

DFL: High-Performance Blockchain-Based Federated Learning

Many researchers have proposed replacing the aggregation server in federated learning with a blockchain system to improve privacy, robustness, and scalability. In this approach, clients would upload their updated models to the blockchain ledger and use a smart contract to perform model averaging. However, the significant delay and limited computational capabilities of blockchain systems make it inefficient to support machine learning applications on the blockchain. In this paper, we propose a new public blockchain architecture called DFL, which is specially optimized for distributed federated machine learning. Our architecture inherits the merits of traditional blockchain systems while achieving low latency and low resource consumption by waiving global consensus. To evaluate the performance and robustness of our architecture, we implemented a prototype and tested it on a physical four-node network, and also developed a simulator to simulate larger networks and more complex situations. Our experiments show that the DFL architecture can reach over 90\% accuracy for non-I.I.D. datasets, even in the presence of model poisoning attacks, while ensuring that the blockchain part consumes less than 5\% of hardware resources.

A Bidirectional Conversion Network for Cross-Spectral Face Recognition

Face recognition in the infrared (IR) band has become an important supplement to visible light face recognition due to its advantages of independent background light, strong penetration, ability of imaging under harsh environments such as nighttime, rain and fog. However, cross-spectral face recognition (i.e., VIS to IR) is very challenging due to the dramatic difference between the visible light and IR imageries as well as the lack of paired training data. This paper proposes a framework of bidirectional cross-spectral conversion (BCSC-GAN) between the heterogeneous face images, and designs an adaptive weighted fusion mechanism based on information fusion theory. The network reduces the cross-spectral recognition problem into an intra-spectral problem, and improves performance by fusing bidirectional information. Specifically, a face identity retaining module (IRM) is introduced with the ability to preserve identity features, and a new composite loss function is designed to overcome the modal differences caused by different spectral characteristics. Two datasets of TINDERS and CASIA were tested, where performance metrics of FID, recognition rate, equal error rate and normalized distance were compared. Results show that our proposed network is superior than other state-of-the-art methods. Additionally, the proposed rule of Self Adaptive Weighted Fusion (SAWF) is better than the recognition results of the unfused case and other traditional fusion rules that are commonly used, which further justifies the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed bidirectional conversion approach.

Quantum error correction with the color-Gottesman-Kitaev-Preskill code

The Gottesman-Kitaev-Preskill (GKP) code is an important type of bosonic quantum error-correcting code. Since the GKP code only protects against small shift errors in $\hat{p}$ and $\hat{q}$ quadratures, it is necessary to concatenate the GKP code with a stabilizer code for the larger error correction. In this paper, we consider the concatenation of the single-mode GKP code with the two-dimension (2D) color code (color-GKP code) on the square-octagon lattice. We use the Steane type scheme with a maximum-likelihood estimation (ME-Steane scheme) for GKP error correction and show its advantage for the concatenation. In our main work, the minimum-weight perfect matching (MWPM) algorithm is applied to decode the color-GKP code. Complemented with the continuous-variable information from the GKP code, the threshold of 2D color code is improved. If only data GKP qubits are noisy, the threshold reaches $σ\approx 0.59$ $(\bar{p}\approx13.3\%)$ compared with $\bar{p}=10.2\%$ of the normal 2D color code. If measurements are also noisy, we introduce the generalized Restriction Decoder on the three-dimension space-time graph for decoding. The threshold reaches $σ\approx 0.46$ when measurements in the GKP error correction are noiseless, and $σ\approx 0.24$ when all measurements are noisy. Lastly, the good performance of the generalized Restriction Decoder is also shown on the normal 2D color code giving the threshold at $3.1\%$ under the phenomenological error model.
