C3PO: A Ly{\alpha} Emitting Galaxy at $z \sim 9$

We present deep, $>10$ hr, JWST NIRSpec G140M and G395M observations of a previously known galaxy C3PO-8447 at $z=8.99781$. Our new NIRSpec data from the Carbon-3 plus Oxygen (C3PO) survey detect Ly$\alpha$ emission with an escape fraction of $1.5\pm0.3\%$ and a velocity offset of $210\pm80$ km s$^{-1}$, making C3PO-8447 the third Ly$\alpha$ emitting galaxy confirmed at $z\gtrsim 9$. The galaxy has a low stellar mass of $2.2\pm0.1\times 10^7\ M_\odot$, a young stellar age of $1.6\pm0.2$ Myr, and a low oxygen abundance of $12+\log(\mathrm{O/H}) = 7.50\pm0.08$. UV diagnostic diagrams incorporating the C IV, O III], and C III] emission lines indicate that the ionization of C3PO-8447 is dominated by the recent starburst. The low Ly$\alpha$ escape fraction of C3PO-8447 implies that C3PO-8447 resides in a small ionized bubble with radius $R \sim 0.07$ to 0.20 pMpc, which can be produced by C3PO-8447 alone. We find no evidence for either a large-scale galaxy overdensity around C3PO-8447 or a significant contribution from nearby galaxies to its ionizing photon budget. Taken together, these results suggest that C3PO-8447 likely represents an ionized bubble powered by a single low-mass, vigorously star-forming galaxy during the early stages of cosmic reionization.

Implications of Broad [O III] 4364 and UV Line Emission in Two Little Red Dots at z ~ 7 - 8

We present deep, NIRSpec G140M and G395M spectroscopy of Little Red Dots (LRDs) at z = 6.68 and z = 8.35. Both LRDs show broad Balmer and [O III] $\lambda$4364 emission. The broad [O III] $\lambda$4364 lines have FWHM ~1000 km/s, about 1/3 that of the H$\beta$ lines. Assuming gas temperatures T ~ 15,000 - 25,000 K, the [O III] $\lambda$4364/[O III] $\lambda$5008 ratios of the broad lines yield high gas densities, log n/cm^-3 = 6.3 to 7.9, 3-10$\times$ higher than those in broad-line regions of low-redshift quasars. If the broad-lines trace virial motions, it is evidence for metal-enhanced gas clouds, ~1-10~pc from the LRD engine. Both LRDs show narrow [C III] $\lambda$1907 + C III] $\lambda$1909, and O III] $\lambda\lambda$1661,1666. The C III] ratios yield narrow-line gas densities, log n/cm^-3 = 4.2-5.2, similar to those in other star-forming galaxies. The line equivalent widths, EW(O III]), EW(C III]), are at, or exceed, limits expected for stellar populations, likely requiring an additional ionizing source. The LRDs also have [O III] $\lambda$4364/H$\gamma$ ratios that favor ionization from an accretion disk, possibly combined with stars. Both LRDs show nitrogen enhancement based on detections of N III] $\lambda$1746 or N IV] $\lambda$1486, which may imply rapid, recent star-formation. These results favor a scenario where the LRD gas envelopes are highly stratified, having high-density clouds with a non-unity covering factors and a complex geometry, such that ionizing radiation from the LRD accretion disk, combined with that from star-forming regions, produce the nebular emission features.

When Stars Mimic Monsters: Spectral Evidence for an $η$ Carinae-like Giant Eruption in SBS 0335$-$052 E

SBS 0335$-$052 E is an extremely low-metallicity ($Z\sim0.04\,Z_{\odot}$) blue compact dwarf galaxy. An active galactic nucleus has been proposed to explain the broad H$α$ emission and near-infrared (NIR) time variability in super star clusters 1 and 2 (SSCs 1&2). However, Peng et al. discovered broad wings in the forbidden [O III] $\lambda5007$ emission (up to $\sim5\,000\,\rm{km\,s^{-1}}$), challenging the broad-line region interpretation. We present new KCWI/KCRM integral-field spectroscopy to directly compare spectra across multiple SSCs. The nebula surrounding SSCs 1&2 shows unique features. The Ly$β$-pumped O I $\lambda8446$ emission constrains $τ_{\rm\,Lyα}\sim10^8$. Multiple ionization states of iron are detected from Fe$^{+}$ to Fe$^{+4}$. Stellar photoionization models can reproduce the [Fe III]/[Fe II] and [Fe IV]/[Fe III] line ratios at high density ($n_e\sim10^6\,\rm{cm^{-3}}$), but they fail to account for most of the [Fe V] emission. The broad H$α$ wings exhibit an exponential profile; the asymmetric wings extend from $\sim-5\,000\,\rm{km\,s^{-1}}$ to $\sim10\,000\,\rm{km\,s^{-1}}$. Thomson scattering in a radially expanding medium provides a good fit with $v_w\sim200\,\rm{km\,s^{-1}}$, optical depth $τ_e\sim10$, and an outer to inner radius of 10. Enhanced N/O and potentially depleted Fe/O ratios are consistent with CNO-cycled ejecta from massive stars and with dust formation, respectively. We propose that mass loss from a massive star interacting with its circumstellar medium drives a shock that powers the NIR variability, the luminous X-ray point source, and the [Fe V] emission. If confirmed, the proposed stellar eruption would be a distant example of an $η$ Carinae-like giant eruption, and the first in an ultra-low metallicity environment.

TimeSeries2Report prompting enables adaptive large language model management of lithium-ion batteries

Large language models (LLMs) offer promising capabilities for interpreting multivariate time-series data, yet their application to real-world battery energy storage system (BESS) operation and maintenance remains largely unexplored. Here, we present TimeSeries2Report (TS2R), a semantic translation framework that converts raw lithium-ion battery operational time-series into structured, semantically enriched reports, enabling LLMs to reason, predict, and make decisions in BESS management scenarios. TS2R encodes short-term temporal dynamics into natural language through a combination of segmentation, semantic abstraction, and rule-based interpretation, effectively bridging low-level sensor signals with high-level contextual insights. We benchmark TS2R across both lab-scale and real-world datasets, evaluating report quality and downstream task performance in anomaly detection, state-of-charge prediction, and charging/discharging management. Compared with vision-, embedding-, and text-based prompting baselines, report-based prompting via TS2R consistently improves LLM performance in terms of across accuracy, robustness, and explainability metrics. Notably, TS2R-integrated LLMs achieve expert-level decision quality and predictive consistency without retraining or architecture modification, establishing a practical path for adaptive, LLM-driven battery intelligence.

Galaxy Protoclusters as Drivers of Cosmic Reionization: I. Bubble Overlap at Redshift z ~ 7 in LAGER-z7OD1

Since the launch of JWST, the sample size of reionization-era Lyman-alpha-emitters (LAEs) has been steadily growing; yet inferences about the neutral hydrogen fraction in the intergalactic medium exhibit increasing variance at redshift z ~ 7, possibly indicating significant field-to-field fluctuations in the progression of cosmic reionization. In this paper, we present new JWST/NIRSpec and Keck/LRIS spectra of nine LAEs in the redshift z ~ 7 protocluster, LAGER-z7OD1. Measurements of Lyman-alpha-transmission and Lyman-alpha velocity offset along multiple sightlines map the Lyman-alpha damping wing optical depth across the galaxy overdensity. In the standard context of inside-out ionization, we estimate radii of ionized bubbles (R(min) = 0.07 - 0.69 Mpc) based on the distance from each LAE to the first neutral patch along the sightline. The resulting 3D topology reveals three distinct sub-clusters where the ionized bubbles are approaching overlap. Five of the nine LAEs plausibly ionized their bubbles, a few bursts of star formation and a modest escape fraction are sufficient. We demonstrate, however, that the actual ionized volumes are likely larger, at least R(ism) = 0.42 - 1.29 Mpc, based on an empirical model for interstellar attenuation of Lyman-alpha. Modeling galactic attenuation of Lyman-alpha significantly increases the inferred intergalactic transmission (thus enlarging the ionized pathlength). The errorbars on the reddening correction allow fully overlapping bubbles, and our results are consistent with accelerated reionization in the protocluster.
