Generative AI-aided Joint Training-free Secure Semantic Communications via Multi-modal Prompts

Semantic communication (SemCom) holds promise for reducing network resource consumption while achieving the communications goal. However, the computational overheads in jointly training semantic encoders and decoders-and the subsequent deployment in network devices-are overlooked. Recent advances in Generative artificial intelligence (GAI) offer a potential solution. The robust learning abilities of GAI models indicate that semantic decoders can reconstruct source messages using a limited amount of semantic information, e.g., prompts, without joint training with the semantic encoder. A notable challenge, however, is the instability introduced by GAI's diverse generation ability. This instability, evident in outputs like text-generated images, limits the direct application of GAI in scenarios demanding accurate message recovery, such as face image transmission. To solve the above problems, this paper proposes a GAI-aided SemCom system with multi-model prompts for accurate content decoding. Moreover, in response to security concerns, we introduce the application of covert communications aided by a friendly jammer. The system jointly optimizes the diffusion step, jamming, and transmitting power with the aid of the generative diffusion models, enabling successful and secure transmission of the source messages.

Channel Estimation for XL-MIMO Systems with Polar-Domain Multi-Scale Residual Dense Network

Extremely large-scale multiple-input multiple-output (XL-MIMO) is a promising technique to enable versatile applications for future wireless communications. To realize the huge potential performance gain, accurate channel state information is a fundamental technical prerequisite. In conventional massive MIMO, the channel is often modeled by the far-field planar-wavefront with rich sparsity in the angular domain that facilitates the design of low-complexity channel estimation. However, this sparsity is not conspicuous in XL-MIMO systems due to the non-negligible near-field spherical-wavefront. To address the inherent performance loss of the angular-domain channel estimation schemes, we first propose the polar-domain multiple residual dense network (P-MRDN) for XL-MIMO systems based on the polar-domain sparsity of the near-field channel by improving the existing MRDN scheme. Furthermore, a polar-domain multi-scale residual dense network (P-MSRDN) is designed to improve the channel estimation accuracy. Finally, simulation results reveal the superior performance of the proposed schemes compared with existing benchmark schemes and the minimal influence of the channel sparsity on the proposed schemes.

Rate-Splitting for CF Massive MIMO Systems With Channel Aging

The cell-free (CF) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system is considered a cutting-edge technology in next-generation mobile communication due to its ability to provide high-performance coverage seamlessly and uniformly. This paper aims to mitigate the negative impact of channel aging due to the movement of user equipment in CF massive MIMO systems by utilizing rate-splitting (RS) technology. Taking into account the outdated channel state information, we obtain the achievable sum spectral efficiency (SE) of the RS-assisted CF massive MIMO system, where the private messages can directly adopt conventional maximum ratio, local minimum mean square error (MMSE), and centralized MMSE precoding schemes. Moreover, we propose a bisection-based precoding scheme that maximizes the minimum SE of common messages, which outperforms the superposition-based and random precoding schemes and exhibits strong robustness in complex mobile scenarios. Furthermore, we derive a novel closed-form sum SE expression for the considered system. The results demonstrate that RS technology can mitigate interference in mobile CF massive MIMO systems, improving overall system performance.

Uplink Performance of RIS-aided Cell-Free Massive MIMO System with Electromagnetic Interference

Cell-free (CF) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) and reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) are two promising technologies for realizing future beyond-fifth generation (B5G) networks. In this paper, we consider a practical spatially correlated RIS-aided CF massive MIMO system with multi-antenna access points (APs) over spatially correlated fading channels. Different from previous work, the electromagnetic interference (EMI) at RIS is considered to further characterize the system performance of the actual environment. Then, we derive the closed-form expression for the system spectral efficiency (SE) with the maximum ratio (MR) combining at the APs and the large-scale fading decoding (LSFD) at the central processing unit (CPU). Moreover, to counteract the near-far effect and EMI, we propose practical fractional power control (FPC) and max-min power control algorithms to further improve the system performance. We unveil the impact of EMI, channel correlations, and different signal processing methods on the uplink SE of user equipments (UEs). The accuracy of our derived analytical results is verified by extensive Monte-Carlo simulations. Our results show that the EMI can substantially degrade the SE, especially for those UEs with unsatisfactory channel conditions. Besides, increasing the number of RIS elements is always beneficial in terms of the SE, but with diminishing returns when the number of RIS elements is sufficiently large. Furthermore, the existence of spatial correlations among RIS elements can deteriorate the system performance when RIS is impaired by EMI.

Jac-PCG Based Low-Complexity Precoding for Extremely Large-Scale MIMO Systems

Extremely large-scale multiple-input-multipleoutput (XL-MIMO) has been reviewed as a promising technology for future sixth-generation (6G) networks to achieve higher performance. In practice, various linear precoding schemes, such as zero-forcing (ZF) and regularized ZF (RZF) precoding, are sufficient to achieve near-optimal performance in traditional massive MIMO (mMIMO) systems. It is critical to note that in large-scale antenna arrays the operation of channel matrix inversion poses a significant computational challenge for these precoders. Therefore, we explore several iterative methods for determining the precoding matrix for XL-MIMO systems instead of direct matrix inversion. Taking into account small- and large-scale fading as well as spatial correlation between antennas, we study their computational complexity and convergence rate. Furthermore, we propose the Jacobi-Preconditioning Conjugate Gradient (Jac-PCG) iterative inversion method, which enjoys a faster convergence speed than the CG method. Besides, the closed-form expression of spectral efficiency (SE) considering the interference between subarrays in downlink XL-MIMO systems is derived. In the numerical results, it is shown that the complexity given by the Jac-PCG algorithm has about 54% reduction than the traditional RZF algorithm at basically the same SE performance.

Energy-Efficient Cell-Free Massive MIMO Through Sparse Large-Scale Fading Processing

Cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (CF mMIMO) systems serve the user equipments (UEs) by geographically distributed access points (APs) by means of joint transmission and reception. To limit the power consumption due to fronthaul signaling and processing, each UE should only be served by a subset of the APs, but it is hard to identify that subset. Previous works have tackled this combinatorial problem heuristically. In this paper, we propose a sparse distributed processing design for CF mMIMO, where the AP-UE association and long-term signal processing coefficients are jointly optimized. We formulate two sparsity-inducing mean-squared error (MSE) minimization problems and solve them by using efficient proximal approaches with block-coordinate descent. For the downlink, more specifically, we develop a virtually optimized large-scale fading precoding (V-LSFP) scheme using uplink-downlink duality. The numerical results show that the proposed sparse processing schemes work well in both uplink and downlink. In particular, they achieve almost the same spectral efficiency as if all APs would serve all UEs, while the energy efficiency is 2-4 times higher thanks to the reduced processing and signaling.

Finite element and integral equation methods to conical diffraction by imperfectly conducting gratings

In this paper we study the variational method and integral equation methods for a conical diffraction problem for imperfectly conducting gratings modeled by the impedance boundary value problem of the Helmholtz equation in periodic structures. We justify the strong ellipticity of the sesquilinear form corresponding to the variational formulation and prove the uniqueness of solutions at any frequency. Convergence of the finite element method using the transparent boundary condition (Dirichlet-to-Neumann mapping) is verified. The boundary integral equation method is also discussed.

Extremely Large-Scale MIMO: Fundamentals, Challenges, Solutions, and Future Directions

Extremely large-scale multiple-input-multiple-output (XL-MIMO) is a promising technology to empower the next-generation communications. However, XL-MIMO, which is still in its early stage of research, has been designed with a variety of hardware and performance analysis schemes. To illustrate the differences and similarities among these schemes, we comprehensively review existing XL-MIMO hardware designs and characteristics in this article. Then, we thoroughly discuss the research status of XL-MIMO from "channel modeling", "performance analysis", and "signal processing". Several existing challenges are introduced and respective solutions are provided. We then propose two case studies for the hybrid propagation channel modeling and the effective degrees of freedom (EDoF) computations for practical scenarios. Using our proposed solutions, we perform numerical results to investigate the EDoF performance for the scenarios with unparallel XL-MIMO surfaces and multiple user equipment, respectively. Finally, we discuss several future research directions.

Learning Audio-Visual Source Localization via False Negative Aware Contrastive Learning

Self-supervised audio-visual source localization aims to locate sound-source objects in video frames without extra annotations. Recent methods often approach this goal with the help of contrastive learning, which assumes only the audio and visual contents from the same video are positive samples for each other. However, this assumption would suffer from false negative samples in real-world training. For example, for an audio sample, treating the frames from the same audio class as negative samples may mislead the model and therefore harm the learned representations e.g., the audio of a siren wailing may reasonably correspond to the ambulances in multiple images). Based on this observation, we propose a new learning strategy named False Negative Aware Contrastive (FNAC) to mitigate the problem of misleading the training with such false negative samples. Specifically, we utilize the intra-modal similarities to identify potentially similar samples and construct corresponding adjacency matrices to guide contrastive learning. Further, we propose to strengthen the role of true negative samples by explicitly leveraging the visual features of sound sources to facilitate the differentiation of authentic sounding source regions. FNAC achieves state-of-the-art performances on Flickr-SoundNet, VGG-Sound, and AVSBench, which demonstrates the effectiveness of our method in mitigating the false negative issue. The code is available at \url{https://github.com/OpenNLPLab/FNAC_AVL}.

Learning towards Selective Data Augmentation for Dialogue Generation

As it is cumbersome and expensive to acquire a huge amount of data for training neural dialog models, data augmentation is proposed to effectively utilize existing training samples. However, current data augmentation techniques on the dialog generation task mostly augment all cases in the training dataset without considering the intrinsic attributes between different cases. We argue that not all cases are beneficial for augmentation task, and the cases suitable for augmentation should obey the following two attributes: (1) low-quality (the dialog model cannot generate a high-quality response for the case), (2) representative (the case should represent the property of the whole dataset). Herein, we explore this idea by proposing a Selective Data Augmentation framework (SDA) for the response generation task. SDA employs a dual adversarial network to select the lowest quality and most representative data points for augmentation in one stage. Extensive experiments conducted on two publicly available datasets, i.e., DailyDialog and OpenSubtitles, show that our framework can improve the response generation performance with respect to various metrics.

Uplink Power Control for Extremely Large-Scale MIMO with Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning and Fuzzy Logic

In this paper, we investigate the uplink transmit power optimization problem in cell-free (CF) extremely large-scale multiple-input multiple-output (XL-MIMO) systems. Instead of applying the traditional methods, we propose two signal processing architectures: the centralized training and centralized execution with fuzzy logic as well as the centralized training and decentralized execution with fuzzy logic, respectively, which adopt the amalgamation of multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL) and fuzzy logic to solve the design problem of power control for the maximization of the system spectral efficiency (SE). Furthermore, the uplink performance of the system adopting maximum ratio (MR) combining and local minimum mean-squared error (L-MMSE) combining is evaluated. Our results show that the proposed methods with fuzzy logic outperform the conventional MARL-based method and signal processing methods in terms of computational complexity. Also, the SE performance under MR combining is even better than that of the conventional MARL-based method.

Audio-Visual Segmentation

We propose to explore a new problem called audio-visual segmentation (AVS), in which the goal is to output a pixel-level map of the object(s) that produce sound at the time of the image frame. To facilitate this research, we construct the first audio-visual segmentation benchmark (AVSBench), providing pixel-wise annotations for the sounding objects in audible videos. Two settings are studied with this benchmark: 1) semi-supervised audio-visual segmentation with a single sound source and 2) fully-supervised audio-visual segmentation with multiple sound sources. To deal with the AVS problem, we propose a novel method that uses a temporal pixel-wise audio-visual interaction module to inject audio semantics as guidance for the visual segmentation process. We also design a regularization loss to encourage the audio-visual mapping during training. Quantitative and qualitative experiments on the AVSBench compare our approach to several existing methods from related tasks, demonstrating that the proposed method is promising for building a bridge between the audio and pixel-wise visual semantics. Uplink Performance of Cell-Free Extremely Large-Scale MIMO Systems

In this paper, we investigate the uplink performance of cell-free (CF) extremely large-scale multiple-input-multipleoutput (XL-MIMO) systems, which is a promising technique for future wireless communications. More specifically, we consider the practical scenario with multiple base stations (BSs) and multiple user equipments (UEs). To this end, we derive exact achievable spectral efficiency (SE) expressions for any combining scheme. It is worth noting that we derive the closed-form SE expressions for the CF XL-MIMO with maximum ratio (MR) combining. Numerical results show that the SE performance of the CF XL-MIMO can be hugely improved compared with the small-cell XL-MIMO. It is interesting that a smaller antenna spacing leads to a higher correlation level among patch antennas. Finally, we prove that increasing the number of UE antennas may decrease the SE performance with MR combining.

Low-Complexity Precoding for Extremely Large-Scale MIMO Over Non-Stationary Channels

Extremely large-scale multiple-input-multiple-output (XL-MIMO) is a promising technology for the future sixth-generation (6G) networks to achieve higher performance. In practice, various linear precoding schemes, such as zero-forcing (ZF) and regularized zero-forcing (RZF) precoding, are capable of achieving both large spectral efficiency (SE) and low bit error rate (BER) in traditional massive MIMO (mMIMO) systems. However, these methods are not efficient in extremely large-scale regimes due to the inherent spatial non-stationarity and high computational complexity. To address this problem, we investigate a low-complexity precoding algorithm, e.g., randomized Kaczmarz (rKA), taking into account the spatial non-stationary properties in XL-MIMO systems. Furthermore, we propose a novel mode of randomization, i.e., sampling without replacement rKA (SwoR-rKA), which enjoys a faster convergence speed than the rKA algorithm. Besides, the closed-form expression of SE considering the interference between subarrays in downlink XL-MIMO systems is derived. Numerical results show that the complexity given by both rKA and SwoR-rKA algorithms has 51.3% reduction than the traditional RZF algorithm with similar SE performance. More importantly, our algorithms can effectively reduce the BER when the transmitter has imperfect channel estimation.

Audio-Visual Segmentation with Semantics

We propose a new problem called audio-visual segmentation (AVS), in which the goal is to output a pixel-level map of the object(s) that produce sound at the time of the image frame. To facilitate this research, we construct the first audio-visual segmentation benchmark, i.e., AVSBench, providing pixel-wise annotations for sounding objects in audible videos. It contains three subsets: AVSBench-object (Single-source subset, Multi-sources subset) and AVSBench-semantic (Semantic-labels subset). Accordingly, three settings are studied: 1) semi-supervised audio-visual segmentation with a single sound source; 2) fully-supervised audio-visual segmentation with multiple sound sources, and 3) fully-supervised audio-visual semantic segmentation. The first two settings need to generate binary masks of sounding objects indicating pixels corresponding to the audio, while the third setting further requires generating semantic maps indicating the object category. To deal with these problems, we propose a new baseline method that uses a temporal pixel-wise audio-visual interaction module to inject audio semantics as guidance for the visual segmentation process. We also design a regularization loss to encourage audio-visual mapping during training. Quantitative and qualitative experiments on AVSBench compare our approach to several existing methods for related tasks, demonstrating that the proposed method is promising for building a bridge between the audio and pixel-wise visual semantics. Blockchain-aided Secure Semantic Communication for AI-Generated Content in Metaverse

The construction of virtual transportation networks requires massive data to be transmitted from edge devices to Virtual Service Providers (VSP) to facilitate circulations between the physical and virtual domains in Metaverse. Leveraging semantic communication for reducing information redundancy, VSPs can receive semantic data from edge devices to provide varied services through advanced techniques, e.g., AI-Generated Content (AIGC), for users to explore digital worlds. But the use of semantic communication raises a security issue because attackers could send malicious semantic data with similar semantic information but different desired content to break Metaverse services and cause wrong output of AIGC. Therefore, in this paper, we first propose a blockchain-aided semantic communication framework for AIGC services in virtual transportation networks to facilitate interactions of the physical and virtual domains among VSPs and edge devices. We illustrate a training-based targeted semantic attack scheme to generate adversarial semantic data by various loss functions. We also design a semantic defense scheme that uses the blockchain and zero-knowledge proofs to tell the difference between the semantic similarities of adversarial and authentic semantic data and to check the authenticity of semantic data transformations. Simulation results show that the proposed defense method can reduce the semantic similarity of the adversarial semantic data and the authentic ones by up to 30% compared with the attack scheme.

Uplink Precoding Design for Cell-Free Massive MIMO with Iteratively Weighted MMSE

In this paper, we investigate a cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output system with both access points and user equipments equipped with multiple antennas over the Weichselberger Rayleigh fading channel. We study the uplink spectral efficiency (SE) for the fully centralized processing scheme and large-scale fading decoding (LSFD) scheme. To further improve the SE performance, we design the uplink precoding schemes based on the weighted sum SE maximization. Since the weighted sum SE maximization problem is not jointly over all optimization variables, two efficient uplink precoding schemes based on Iteratively Weighted sum-Minimum Mean Square Error (I-WMMSE) algorithms, which rely on the iterative minimization of weighted MSE, are proposed for two processing schemes investigated. Furthermore, with maximum ratio combining applied in the LSFD scheme, we derive novel closed-form achievable SE expressions and optimal precoding schemes. Numerical results validate the proposed results and show that the I-WMMSE precoding schemes can achieve excellent sum SE performance with a large number of UE antennas.
