Hybrid Dual Mean-Teacher Network With Double-Uncertainty Guidance for Semi-Supervised Segmentation of MRI Scans

Semi-supervised learning has made significant progress in medical image segmentation. However, existing methods primarily utilize information acquired from a single dimensionality (2D/3D), resulting in sub-optimal performance on challenging data, such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans with multiple objects and highly anisotropic resolution. To address this issue, we present a Hybrid Dual Mean-Teacher (HD-Teacher) model with hybrid, semi-supervised, and multi-task learning to achieve highly effective semi-supervised segmentation. HD-Teacher employs a 2D and a 3D mean-teacher network to produce segmentation labels and signed distance fields from the hybrid information captured in both dimensionalities. This hybrid learning mechanism allows HD-Teacher to combine the `best of both worlds', utilizing features extracted from either 2D, 3D, or both dimensions to produce outputs as it sees fit. Outputs from 2D and 3D teacher models are also dynamically combined, based on their individual uncertainty scores, into a single hybrid prediction, where the hybrid uncertainty is estimated. We then propose a hybrid regularization module to encourage both student models to produce results close to the uncertainty-weighted hybrid prediction. The hybrid uncertainty suppresses unreliable knowledge in the hybrid prediction, leaving only useful information to improve network performance further. Extensive experiments of binary and multi-class segmentation conducted on three MRI datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed framework. Every-other-layer Dipolar Excitons in a Spin-Valley locked Superlattice

Monolayer semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides possess broken inversion symmetry and strong spin-orbit coupling, which leads to unique spin-valley locking effect. In 2H stacked pristine multilayers, the spin-valley locking yields an electronic superlattice structure, where alternating layers correspond to barrier and quantum well respectively, conditioned on the spin-valley indices. Here, we show that the spin-valley locked superlattice hosts a new kind of dipolar excitons with the electron and hole constituents separated in an every-other-layer configuration, i.e., either in two even or two odd layers. Such excitons become optically bright via hybridization with intralayer excitons, displaying multiple anti-crossing patterns in optical reflection spectrum as the dipolar exciton is tuned through the intralayer resonance by electric field. The reflectance spectra also reveal an excited state orbital of the every-other-layer exciton, pointing to a sizable binding energy in the same order of magnitude as the intralayer exciton. As layer thickness increases, the dipolar exciton can form one-dimensional Bose-Hubbard chain displaying a layer number dependent fine-structures in the reflectance spectra. Our work reveals a distinct valleytronic superlattice with highly tunable dipolar excitons for exploring light-matter interactions.

Intercell Moiré Exciton Complexes in Electron Lattices

Excitons, Coulomb-bound electron-hole pairs, play a fundamental role in both optical excitation and correlated phenomena in solids. When an exciton interacts with other quasi-particles, few- and many-body excited states, such as trions, exciton Fermi-polarons, Mahan excitons can appear. Here, we report a new interaction between exciton and charges enabled by unusual quantum confinement in 2D moiré superlattices, which results in novel exciton many-body ground states composed of moiré excitons and correlated electron lattices. Unique to H-stacked (or 60o-twisted) WS2/WSe2 heterobilayer, we found that the interlayer atomic registry and moiré structural reconstruction leads to an interlayer moiré exciton (IME) whose hole in one layer is surrounded by its partner electron's wavefunction spread among three adjacent moiré traps in the other layer. This 3D excitonic structure can enable large in-plane electrical quadrupole moments in addition to the vertical dipole. Upon doping, the electric quadrupole facilitates the binding of IME to the charges in neighboring moiré cells, forming an intercell charged exciton complex. The exciton complex is unveiled by the IME photoluminescence energy jumps when the electron lattices form at both fractional and integer-filled moiré minibands, with replica-like spectral features between successive integer moiré fillings. Our work provides the framework in understanding and engineering emergent exciton many-body states in correlated moiré charge orders.

Masked Faces with Faced Masks

Modern face recognition systems (FRS) still fall short when the subjects are wearing facial masks, a common theme in the age of respiratory pandemics. An intuitive partial remedy is to add a mask detector to flag any masked faces so that the FRS can act accordingly for those low-confidence masked faces. In this work, we set out to investigate the potential vulnerability of such FRS equipped with a mask detector, on large-scale masked faces, which might trigger a serious risk, e.g., letting a suspect evade the FRS where both facial identity and mask are undetected. As existing face recognizers and mask detectors have high performance in their respective tasks, it is significantly challenging to simultaneously fool them and preserve the transferability of the attack. We formulate the new task as the generation of realistic & adversarial-faced mask and make three main contributions: First, we study the naive Delanunay-based masking method (DM) to simulate the process of wearing a faced mask that is cropped from a template image, which reveals the main challenges of this new task. Second, we further equip the DM with the adversarial noise attack and propose the adversarial noise Delaunay-based masking method (AdvNoise-DM) that can fool the face recognition and mask detection effectively but make the face less natural. Third, we propose the adversarial filtering Delaunay-based masking method denoted as MF2M by employing the adversarial filtering for AdvNoise-DM and obtain more natural faces. With the above efforts, the final version not only leads to significant performance deterioration of the state-of-the-art (SOTA) deep learning-based FRS, but also remains undetected by the SOTA facial mask detector, thus successfully fooling both systems at the same time.

Light-Induced Ferromagnetism in Moiré Superlattices

Many-body interactions between carriers lie at the heart of correlated physics. The ability to tune such interactions would open the possibility to access and control complex electronic phase diagrams on demand. Recently, moiré superlattices formed by two-dimensional materials have emerged as a promising platform for quantum engineering such phenomena. The power of the moiré system lies in the high tunability of its physical parameters by tweaking layer twist angle, electrical field, moiré carrier filling, and interlayer coupling. Here, we report that optical excitation can drastically tune the spin-spin interactions between moiré trapped carriers, resulting in ferromagnetic order in WS2/WSe2 moiré superlattices over a small range of doping at elevated temperatures. Near the filling factor v = -1/3 (i.e., one hole per three moiré unit cells), as the excitation power at the exciton resonance increases, a well-developed hysteresis loop emerges in the reflective magnetic circular dichroism (RMCD) signal as a function of magnetic field, a hallmark of ferromagnetism. The hysteresis loop persists down to charge neutrality, and its shape evolves as the moiré superlattice is gradually filled, indicating changes of magnetic ground state properties. The observed phenomenon points to a mechanism in which itinerant photo-excited excitons mediate exchange coupling between moiré trapped holes. This exciton-mediated interaction can be of longer range than direct coupling between moiré trapped holes, and thus magnetic order can arise even in the dilute hole regime under optical excitation. This discovery adds a new and dynamic tuning knob to the rich many-body Hamiltonian of moiré quantum matter.

Long-range transport of 2D excitons with acoustic waves

Excitons are elementary optical excitation in semiconductors. The ability to manipulate and transport these quasiparticles would enable excitonic circuits and devices for quantum photonic technologies. Recently, interlayer excitons in 2D semiconductors have emerged as a promising candidate for engineering excitonic devices due to their long lifetime, large exciton binding energy, and gate tunability. However, the charge-neutral nature of the excitons leads to weak response to the in-plane electric field and thus inhibits transport beyond the diffusion length. Here, we demonstrate the directional transport of interlayer excitons in bilayer WSe2 driven by the propagating potential traps induced by surface acoustic waves (SAW). We show that at 100 K, the SAW-driven excitonic transport is activated above a threshold acoustic power and reaches 20 mm, a distance at least ten times longer than the diffusion length and only limited by the device size. Temperature-dependent measurement reveals the transition from the diffusion-limited regime at low temperature to the acoustic field-driven regime at elevated temperature. Our work shows that acoustic waves are an effective, contact-free means to control exciton dynamics and transport, promising for realizing 2D materials-based excitonic devices such as exciton transistors, switches, and transducers up to room temperature.

Prema: A Tool for Precise Requirements Editing, Modeling and Analysis

We present Prema, a tool for Precise Requirement Editing, Modeling and Analysis. It can be used in various fields for describing precise requirements using formal notations and performing rigorous analysis. By parsing the requirements written in formal modeling language, Prema is able to get a model which aptly depicts the requirements. It also provides different rigorous verification and validation techniques to check whether the requirements meet users' expectation and find potential errors. We show that our tool can provide a unified environment for writing and verifying requirements without using tools that are not well inter-related. For experimental demonstration, we use the requirements of the automatic train protection (ATP) system of CASCO signal co. LTD., the largest railway signal control system manufacturer of China. The code of the tool cannot be released here because the project is commercially confidential. However, a demonstration video of the tool is available at https://youtu.be/BX0yv8pRMWs.

Visualization of the flat electronic band in twisted bilayer graphene near the magic angle twist

Bilayer graphene was theorized to host a moire miniband with flat dispersion if the layers are stacked at specific twist angles known as the magic angles. Recently, such twisted bilayer graphene (tBLG) with the first magic angle twist was reported to exhibit correlated insulating state and superconductivity, where the presence of the flat miniband in the system is thought to be essential for the emergence of these ordered phases in the transport measurements. Tunneling spectroscopy and electronic compressibility measurements in tBLG have revealed a van Hove singularity that is consistent with the presence of the flat miniband. However, a direct observation of the flat dispersion in the momentum-space of such moire miniband in tBLG is still elusive. Here, we report the visualization of the flat moire miniband by using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy with nanoscale resolution (nanoARPES). The high spatial resolution in nanoARPES enabled the measurement of the local electronic structure of the tBLG. We clearly demonstrate the existence of the flat moire band near the charge neutrality for tBLG close to the magic angle at room temperature.
