Primitive sets and von Mangoldt chains: Erdős Problem #1196 and beyond

A set of integers is primitive if no number in the set divides another. We introduce a new method for bounding Erdős sums of primitive sets, suggested from output of GPT-5.4 Pro, based on Markov chains with von Mangoldt weights. The method leads to a host of applications, yet seems to have been overlooked by the prior literature since Erdős's seminal 1935 paper. As applications, we prove two 1966 conjectures of Erdős-Sárközy-Szemerédi, on primitive sets of large numbers (#1196) and on divisibility chains (#1217). The method also provides a short proof of the Erdős Primitive Set Conjecture (#164), as well as the related claim that 2 is an ''Erdős-strong'' prime. Moreover, the method resolves a revised form of the Banks-Martin conjecture, which has long been viewed as a unifying `master theorem' for the area.

The Impact of Class Uncertainty Propagation in Perception-Based Motion Planning

Autonomous vehicles (AVs) are being increasingly deployed in urban environments. In order to operate safely and reliably, AVs need to account for the inherent uncertainty associated with perceiving the world through sensor data and incorporate that into their decision-making process. Uncertainty-aware planners have recently been developed to account for upstream perception and prediction uncertainty. However, such planners may be sensitive to prediction uncertainty miscalibration, the magnitude of which has not yet been characterized. Towards this end, we perform a detailed analysis on the impact that perceptual uncertainty propagation and calibration has on perception-based motion planning. We do so by comparing two novel prediction-planning pipelines with varying levels of uncertainty propagation on the recently-released nuPlan planning benchmark. We study the impact of upstream uncertainty calibration using closed-loop evaluation on the nuPlan challenge scenarios. We find that the method incorporating upstream uncertainty propagation demonstrates superior generalization to complex closed-loop scenarios.

Central limit theorems for random multiplicative functions over function fields

We provide a sufficient characterization for subsets $\mathcal{A}$ of the polynomial ring $\mathbb{F}_q[t]$ for which partial sums of Steinhaus random multiplicative functions approach a complex standard normal distribution. This extends recent work of Soundararajan and Xu to the function field setting. We apply this characterization to deduce central limit theorems in four cases: polynomials in short intervals, polynomials with few prime factors, shifted primes, and rough polynomials. In doing so, we also establish an explicit Hildebrand inequality for smooth polynomials in short intervals, a function field form of Shiu's theorem for multiplicative functions, and an explicit Chebyshev bound for rough polynomials in short intervals.
