Minute-Cadence Observations of the LAMOST Fields with the TMTS: II. Catalogues of Short-Period Variable Stars from the First Two-Year Surveys

Over the past few years, wide-field time-domain surveys like ZTF and OGLE have led to discoveries of various types of interesting short-period stellar variables, such as ultracompact eclipsing binary white dwarfs, rapidly rotating magnetised white dwarfs (WDs), transitional cataclysmic variables between hydrogen-rich and helium accretion, and blue large-amplitude pulsators (BLAPs), which greatly enrich our understandings of stellar physics under some extreme conditions. In this paper, we report the first-two-year discoveries of short-period variables (i.e., P<2 hr) by the Tsinghua University-Ma Huateng Telescopes for Survey (TMTS). TMTS is a multi-tube telescope system with a field of view up to 18 deg^2, which started to monitor the LAMOST sky areas since 2020 and generated uninterrupted minute-cadence light curves for about ten million sources within 2 years. Adopting the Lomb-Scargle periodogram with period-dependent thresholds for the maximum powers, we identify over 1 100 sources that exhibit a variation period shorter than 2 hr. Compiling the light curves with the Gaia magnitudes and colours, LAMOST spectral parameters, VSX classifications, and archived observations from other prevailing time-domain survey missions, we identified 1 076 as delta Scuti stars, which allows us study their populations and physical properties in the short-period regime. The other 31 sources include BLAPs, subdwarf B variables (sdBVs), pulsating WDs, ultracompact/short-period eclipsing/ellipsoidal binaries, cataclysmic variables below the period gap, etc., which are highly interesting and worthy of follow-up investigations.

An 18.9-minute Blue Large-Amplitude Pulsator Crossing the 'Hertzsprung Gap' of Hot Subdwarfs

Blue large-amplitude pulsators (BLAPs) represent a new and rare class of hot pulsating stars with unusually large amplitudes and short periods. Up to now, only 24 confirmed BLAPs have been identified from more than one billion monitored stars, including a group with pulsation period longer than $\sim 20$ min (classical BLAPs, hereafter) and the other group with pulsation period below $\sim 8$ min. The evolutionary path that could give rise to such kinds of stellar configurations is unclear. Here we report on a comprehensive study of the peculiar BLAP discovered by the Tsinghua University - Ma Huateng Telescopes for Survey (TMTS), TMTS J035143.63+584504.2 (TMTS-BLAP-1). This new BLAP has an 18.9 min pulsation period and is similar to the BLAPs with a low surface gravity and an extended helium-enriched envelope, suggesting that it is a low-gravity BLAP at the shortest-period end. In particular, the long-term monitoring data reveal that this pulsating star has an unusually large rate of period change, P_dot/P=2.2e-6/yr. Such a significant and positive value challenges its origins from both helium-core pre-white-dwarfs and core helium-burning subdwarfs, but is consistent with that derived from shell helium-burning subdwarfs. The particular pulsation period and unusual rate of period change indicate that TMTS-BLAP-1 is at a short-lived (~10^6 yr) phase of shell-helium ignition before the stable shell-helium burning; in other words, TMTS-BLAP-1 is going through a "Hertzsprung gap" of hot subdwarfs.

SN 2019ein: A Type Ia Supernova Likely Originated from a Sub-Chandrasekhar-Mass Explosion

We present extensive optical photometric and spectroscopic observations for the nearby Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) 2019ein, spanning the phases from $\sim 3$ days to $\sim 330$ days after the explosion. This SN Ia is characterized by extremely fast expansion at early times, with initial velocities of Si II and Ca II being above ~ 25,000--30,000 km/s. After experiencing an unusually rapid velocity decay, the ejecta velocity dropped to ~ 13,000 km/s around maximum light. Photometrically, SN 2019ein has a moderate post-peak decline rate ($Δm_{15}(B) = 1.35 \pm 0.01$ mag), while being fainter than normal SNe Ia by about 40% (with $M^{\rm max}_{B} \approx -18.71 \pm 0.15$ mag). The nickel mass synthesized in the explosion is estimated to be 0.27--0.31 $M_{\odot}$ from the bolometric light curve. Given such a low nickel mass and a relatively high photospheric velocity, we propose that SN 2019ein likely had a sub-Chandrasekhar-mass white dwarf (WD) progenitor, $M_{\rm WD} \lesssim 1.22 M_{\odot}$. In this case, the explosion could have been triggered by a double-detonation mechanism, for which 1- and 2-dimensional models with WD mass $M_{\rm WD} \approx 1 M_\odot$ and a helium shell of 0.01 $M_{\odot}$ can reasonably produce the observed bolometric light curve and spectra. The predicted asymmetry as a result of double detonation is also favored by the redshifted Fe II and Ni II lines observed in the nebular-phase spectrum. Possible diversity in origin of high velocity SNe Ia is also discussed.

Internal Language Model Estimation based Language Model Fusion for Cross-Domain Code-Switching Speech Recognition

Internal Language Model Estimation (ILME) based language model (LM) fusion has been shown significantly improved recognition results over conventional shallow fusion in both intra-domain and cross-domain speech recognition tasks. In this paper, we attempt to apply our ILME method to cross-domain code-switching speech recognition (CSSR) work. Specifically, our curiosity comes from several aspects. First, we are curious about how effective the ILME-based LM fusion is for both intra-domain and cross-domain CSSR tasks. We verify this with or without merging two code-switching domains. More importantly, we train an end-to-end (E2E) speech recognition model by means of merging two monolingual data sets and observe the efficacy of the proposed ILME-based LM fusion for CSSR. Experimental results on SEAME that is from Southeast Asian and another Chinese Mainland CS data set demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed ILME-based LM fusion method.

Intermediate-layer output Regularization for Attention-based Speech Recognition with Shared Decoder

Intermediate layer output (ILO) regularization by means of multitask training on encoder side has been shown to be an effective approach to yielding improved results on a wide range of end-to-end ASR frameworks. In this paper, we propose a novel method to do ILO regularized training differently. Instead of using conventional multitask methods that entail more training overhead, we directly make the intermediate layer output as input to the decoder, that is, our decoder not only accepts the output of the final encoder layer as input, it also takes the output of the encoder ILO as input during training. With the proposed method, as both encoder and decoder are simultaneously "regularized", the network is more sufficiently trained, consistently leading to improved results, over the ILO-based CTC method, as well as over the original attention-based modeling method without the proposed method employed.

Observations of the Very Young Type Ia Supernova 2019np with Early-excess Emission

Early-time radiative signals from type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) can provide important constraints on the explosion mechanism and the progenitor system. We present observations and analysis of SN 2019np, a nearby SN Ia discovered within 1-2 days after the explosion. Follow-up observations were conducted in optical, ultraviolet, and near-infrared bands, covering the phases from $\sim-$16.7 days to $\sim$+367.8 days relative to its $B-$band peak luminosity. The photometric and spectral evolutions of SN 2019np resembles the average behavior of normal SNe Ia. The absolute B-band peak magnitude and the post-peak decline rate are $M_{\rm max}(B)=-19.52 \pm 0.47$mag and $Δm_{\rm15}(B) =1.04 \pm 0.04$mag, respectively. No Hydrogen line has been detected in the near-infrared and nebular-phase spectra of SN 2019np. Assuming that the $^{56}$Ni powering the light curve is centrally located, we find that the bolometric light curve of SN 2019np shows a flux excess up to 5.0% in the early phase compared to the radiative diffusion model. Such an extra radiation perhaps suggests the presence of an additional energy source beyond the radioactive decay of central nickel. Comparing the observed color evolution with that predicted by different models such as interactions of SN ejecta with circumstellar matter (CSM)/companion star, a double-detonation explosion from a sub-Chandrasekhar mass white dwarf (WD), and surface $^{56}$Ni mixing, the latter one is favored.

SN 2019va: A Type IIP Supernova with Large Influence of Nickel-56 Decay on the Plateau-phase Light Curve

We present multi-band photometric and spectroscopic observations of the type II supernova, (SN) 2019va, which shows an unusually flat plateau-phase evolution in its V-band light curve. Its pseudo-bolometric light curve even shows a weak brightening towards the end of the plateau phase. These uncommon features are related to the influence of 56Ni decay on the light curve during the plateau phase, when the SN emission is usually dominated by cooling of the envelope. The inferred 56Ni mass of SN 2019va is 0.088+/-0.018 solar mass, which is significantly larger than most SNe II. To estimate the influence of 56Ni decay on the plateau-phase light curve, we calculate the ratio (dubbed as eta_Ni) between the integrated time-weighted energy from 56Ni decay and that from envelope cooling within the plateau phase, obtaining a value of 0.8 for SN 2019va, which is the second largest value among SNe II that have been measured. After removing the influence of 56Ni decay on the plateau-phase light curve, we found that the progenitor/explosion parameters derived for SN 2019va are more reasonable. In addition, SN 2019va is found to have weaker metal lines in its spectra compared to other SNe IIP at similar epochs, implying a low-metallicity progenitor, which is consistent with the metal-poor environment inferred from the host-galaxy spectrum. We further discuss the possible reasons that might lead to SN 2019va-like events.

SN 2018hfm : A Low-Energy Type II Supernova with Prominent Signatures of Circumstellar Interaction and Dust Formation

We present multiband optical photometric and spectroscopic observations of an unusual Type II supernova, SN 2018hfm, which exploded in the nearby (d = 34.67 Mpc) dwarf galaxy PGC 1297331 with a very low star-formation rate (0.0270 M yr-1) and a subsolar metallicity environment(~ 0.5 Z). The V-band light curve of SN 2018hfm reaches a peak with value of -18.69+/-0.64 mag, followed by a fast decline(4.42+/-0.13 mag (100d)-1). After about 50 days, it is found to experience a large flux drop (~3.0 mag in V), and then enters into an unusually faint tail, which indicates a relatively small amount of 56Ni synthesized during the explosion. From the bolometric light curve, SN 2018hfm is estimated to have low ejecta mass (~1.3M) and low explosion energy(~10 50 erg) compared with typical SNe II. The photospheric spectra of SN 2018hfm are similar to those of other SNe II, with P Cygni profiles of the Balmer series and metal lines, while at late phases the spectra are characterised by box-like profiles of HU emission, suggesting significant interaction between the SN ejecta and circumstellar matter. These box-like emission features are found to show increasing asymmetry with time, with the red-side component becoming gradually weaker, indicating that dust is continuously formed in the ejecta. Based on the dust-estimation tool damocles, we find that the dust increases from ~10 -6M to 10 -4 - 10 -3 M between +66.7 d and +389.4 d after explosion.

Minimum word error training for non-autoregressive Transformer-based code-switching ASR

Non-autoregressive end-to-end ASR framework might be potentially appropriate for code-switching recognition task thanks to its inherent property that present output token being independent of historical ones. However, it still under-performs the state-of-the-art autoregressive ASR frameworks. In this paper, we propose various approaches to boosting the performance of a CTC-mask-based nonautoregressive Transformer under code-switching ASR scenario. To begin with, we attempt diversified masking method that are closely related with code-switching point, yielding an improved baseline model. More importantly, we employ MinimumWord Error (MWE) criterion to train the model. One of the challenges is how to generate a diversified hypothetical space, so as to obtain the average loss for a given ground truth. To address such a challenge, we explore different approaches to yielding desired N-best-based hypothetical space. We demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed methods on SEAME corpus, a challenging English-Mandarin code-switching corpus for Southeast Asia community. Compared with the crossentropy-trained strong baseline, the proposed MWE training method achieves consistent performance improvement on the test sets.

Minute-cadence Observations of the LAMOST Fields with the TMTS: I. Methodology of Detecting Short-period Variables and Results from the first-year Survey

Tsinghua University-Ma Huateng Telescopes for Survey (TMTS), located at Xinglong Station of NAOC, has a field of view upto 18 deg^2. The TMTS has started to monitor the LAMOST sky areas since 2020, with the uninterrupted observations lasting for about 6 hours on average for each sky area and a cadence of about 1 minute. Here we introduce the data analysis and preliminary scientific results for the first-year observations, which covered 188 LAMOST plates ( about 1970 deg^2). These observations have generated over 4.9 million uninterrupted light curves, with at least 100 epochs for each of them. These light curves correspond to 4.26 million Gaia-DR2 sources, among which 285 thousand sources are found to have multi-epoch spectra from the LAMOST. By analysing these light curves with the Lomb-Scargle periodograms, we identify more than 3700 periodic variable star candidates with periods below 7.5 hours, primarily consisting of eclipsing binaries and Delta Scuti stars. Those short-period binaries will provide important constraints on theories of binary evolution and possible sources for space gravitational wave experiments in the future. Moreover, we also identified 42 flare stars by searching rapidly-evolving signals in the light curves. The densely-sampled light curves from the TMTS allow us to better quantify the shapes and durations for these flares.

SN 2017fgc: A Fast-Expanding Type Ia Supernova Exploded in Massive Shell Galaxy NGC 474

We present extensive optical photometric and spectroscopic observations of the high-velocity (HV) Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) 2017fgc, covering the phase from $\sim$ 12 d before to $\sim 389$ d after maximum brightness. SN 2017fgc is similar to normal SNe Ia, with an absolute peak magnitude of $M_{\rm max}^{B} \approx$ $-19.32 \pm 0.13$ mag and a post-peak decline of $Δm_{15}(B)$ = $1.05 \pm 0.07$ mag. Its peak bolometric luminosity is derived as $1.32 \pm 0.13) \times 10^{43} $erg s$^{-1}$, corresponding to a $^{56}$Ni mass of $0.51 \pm 0.03 M_{\odot}$. The light curves of SN 2017fgc are found to exhibit excess emission in the $UBV$ bands in the early nebular phase and pronounced secondary shoulder/maximum features in the $RrIi$ bands. Its spectral evolution is similar to that of HV SNe Ia, with a maximum-light Si II velocity of $15,000 \pm 150 $km s$^{-1}$ and a post-peak velocity gradient of $\sim$ $120 \pm 10 $km s$^{-1} $d$^{-1}$. The Fe II and Mg II lines blended near 4300 Å and the Fe II, Si II, and Fe III lines blended near 4800 Å are obviously stronger than those of normal SNe Ia. Inspecting a large sample reveals that the strength of the two blends in the spectra, and the secondary peak in the $i/r$-band light curves, are found to be positively correlated with the maximum-light Si II velocity. Such correlations indicate that HV SNe~Ia may experience more complete burning in the ejecta and/or that their progenitors have higher metallicity. Examining the birthplace environment of SN 2017fgc suggests that it likely arose from a stellar environment with young and high-metallicity populations.

E2E-based Multi-task Learning Approach to Joint Speech and Accent Recognition

In this paper, we propose a single multi-task learning framework to perform End-to-End (E2E) speech recognition (ASR) and accent recognition (AR) simultaneously. The proposed framework is not only more compact but can also yield comparable or even better results than standalone systems. Specifically, we found that the overall performance is predominantly determined by the ASR task, and the E2E-based ASR pretraining is essential to achieve improved performance, particularly for the AR task. Additionally, we conduct several analyses of the proposed method. First, though the objective loss for the AR task is much smaller compared with its counterpart of ASR task, a smaller weighting factor with the AR task in the joint objective function is necessary to yield better results for each task. Second, we found that sharing only a few layers of the encoder yields better AR results than sharing the overall encoder. Experimentally, the proposed method produces WER results close to the best standalone E2E ASR ones, while it achieves 7.7% and 4.2% relative improvement over standalone and single-task-based joint recognition methods on test set for accent recognition respectively.

Multilingual Approach to Joint Speech and Accent Recognition with DNN-HMM Framework

Human can recognize speech, as well as the peculiar accent of the speech simultaneously. However, present state-of-the-art ASR system can rarely do that. In this paper, we propose a multilingual approach to recognizing English speech, and related accent that speaker conveys using DNN-HMM framework. Specifically, we assume different accents of English as different languages. We then merge them together and train a multilingual ASR system. During decoding, we conduct two experiments. One is a monolingual ASR-based decoding, with the accent information embedded at phone level, realizing word-based accent recognition (AR), and the other is a multilingual ASR-based decoding, realizing an approximated utterance-based AR. Experimental results on an 8-accent English speech recognition show both methods can yield WERs close to the conventional ASR systems that completely ignore the accent, as well as desired AR accuracy. Besides, we conduct extensive analysis for the proposed method, such as transfer learning without-domain data exploitation, cross-accent recognition confusion, as well as characteristics of accented-word.

Optical and Ultraviolet Monitoring of the Black Hole X-ray Binary MAXI J1820+070/ASASSN-18ey for 18 Months

MAXI J1820+070 is a low-mass black hole X-ray binary system with high luminosity in both optical and X-ray bands during the outburst periods. We present extensive photometry in X-ray, ultraviolet, and optical bands, as well as densely-cadenced optical spectra, covering the phase from the beginning of optical outburst to $\sim$550 days. During the rebrightening process, the optical emission preceded the X-ray by 20.80 $\pm$ 2.85 days. The spectra are characterized by blue continua and emission features of Balmer series, He I, He II lines and broad Bowen blend. The pseudo equivalent width (pEW) of emission lines are found to show anticorrelations with the X-ray flux measured at comparable phases, which is due to the increased suppression by the optical continuum. At around the X-ray peak, the full width at half maximums (FWHMs) of H$_β$ and He II $λ$4686 tend to stabilize at 19.4 Angstrom and 21.8 Angstrom, which corresponds to the line forming region at a radius of 1.7 and 1.3 R_sun within the disk. We further analyzed the absolute fluxes of the lines and found that the fluxes of H$_β$ and He II $λ$4686 show positive correlations with the X-ray flux, favoring that the irradiation model is responsible for the optical emission. However, the fact that X-ray emission experiences a dramatic flux drop at t$\sim$200 days after the outburst, while the optical flux only shows little variations suggests that additional energy such as viscous energy may contribute to the optical radiation in addition to the X-ray irradiation.

SN 2017hpa: A Nearby Carbon-Rich Type Ia Supernova with a Large Velocity Gradient

We present extensive, well-sampled optical and ultraviolet photometry and optical spectra of the Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) 2017hpa. The light curves indicate that SN 2017hpa is a normal SN Ia with an absolute peak magnitude of $M_{\rm max}^{B} \approx$ -19.12$\pm$0.11 mag and a post-peak decline rate \mb\ = 1.02$\pm$0.07 mag. According to the quasibolometric light curve, we derive a peak luminosity of 1.25$\times$10$^{43}$ erg s$^{-1}$ and a $^{56}$Ni mass of 0.63$\pm$0.02 $M_{\odot}$. The spectral evolution of SN 2017hpa is similar to that of normal SNe Ia, while it exhibits unusually rapid velocity evolution resembling that of SN 1991bg-like SNe Ia or the high-velocity subclass of SNe Ia, with a post-peak velocity gradient of $\sim$ 130$\pm$7 km s$^{-1}$ d$^{-1}$. Moreover, its early spectra ($t < -7.9$ d) show prominent \CII~$λ$6580 absorption feature, which disappeared in near-maximum-light spectra but reemerged at phases from $t \sim +8.7$ d to $t \sim +11.7$ d after maximum light. This implies that some unburned carbon may mix deep into the inner layer, and is supported by the low \CII~$λ$6580 to \SiII~$λ$6355 velocity ratio ($\sim 0.81$) observed in SN 2017hpa. The \OI~$λ$7774 line shows a velocity distribution like that of carbon. The prominent carbon feature, low velocity seen in carbon and oxygen, and large velocity gradient make SN 2017hpa stand out from other normal SNe Ia, and are more consistent with predictions from a violent merger of two white dwarfs. Detailed modelling is still needed to reveal the nature of SN 2017hpa.

Can Helium-detonation Model Explain the Observed Diversity of Type Ia Supernovae?

We study a sample of 16 Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) having both spectroscopic and photometric observations within 2 $-$ 3 days after the first light. The early $B-V$ colors of such a sample tends to show a continuous distribution. For objects with normal ejecta velocity (NV), the C~II $λ$6580 feature is always visible in the early spectra while it is absent or very weak in the high-velocity (HV) counterpart. Moreover, the velocities of the detached high-velocity features (HVFs) of Ca~II NIR triplet (CaIR3) above the photosphere are found to be much higher in HV objects than in NV objects, with typical values exceeding 30,000 km~s$^{-1}$ at 2 $-$ 3 days. We further analyze the relation between %velocities of Si~II~$λ$6355 at maximum, $v_{\rm Si,max}$, the velocity shift of late-time [Fe~II] lines ($v_{\rm [Fe~II]}$) and host galaxy mass. We find that all HV objects have redshifted $v_{\rm [Fe~II]}$ while NV objects have both blue- and redshifted $v_{\rm [Fe~II]}$. It is interesting to point out that the objects with redshifted $v_{\rm [Fe~II]}$ are all located in massive galaxies, implying that HV and a portion of NV objects may have similar progenitor metallicities and explosion mechanisms. We propose that, with a geometric/projected effect, the He-detonation model may account for the similarity in birthplace environment and the differences seen in some SNe Ia, including $B-V$ colors, C~II feature, CaIR3 HVFs at early time and $v_{\rm [Fe~II]}$ in the nebular phase. Nevertheless, some features predicted by He-detonation simulation, such as the rapidly decreasing light curve, deviate from the observations, and some NV objects with blueshifted nebular $v_{\rm [Fe~II]}$ may involve other explosion mechanisms.

Flash ionization signatures in the type Ibn supernova SN 2019uo

We present photometric and spectroscopic observations of the type Ibn supernova (SN) 2019uo, the second ever SN Ibn with flash ionization (He II, C III, N III) features in its early spectra. SN 2019uo displays a rapid post-peak luminosity decline of 0.1 mag d$^{-1}$ similar to most of the SNe Ibn, but is fainter ($M^V_{max} = -18.30 \pm 0.24$ mag) than a typical SN Ibn and shows a color evolution that places it between SNe Ib and the most extreme SNe Ibn. SN 2019uo shows P-cygni He I features in the early spectra which gradually evolves and becomes emission dominated post peak. It also shows faster evolution in line velocities as compared to most other members of the type Ibn subclass. The bolometric light curve is fairly described by a $^{56}$Ni + circumstellar interaction model.

Thermal transport properties of single-layer black phosphorous from extensive molecular dynamics simulations

We compute the anisotropic in-plane thermal conductivity of suspended single-layer black phosphorous (SLBP) using three molecular dynamics (MD) based methods, including the equilibrium MD method, the nonequilibrium MD (NEMD) method, and the homogeneous nonequilibrium MD (HNEMD) method. Two existing parameterizations of the Stillinger-Weber (SW) potential for SLBP are used. Consistent results are obtained for all the three methods and conflicting results from previous MD simulations are critically assessed. Among the three methods, the HNEMD method is the most and the NEMD method the least efficient. The thermal conductivity values from our MD simulations are about an order of magnitude larger than the most recent predictions obtained using the Boltzmann transport equation approach considering long-range interactions in density functional theory calculations, suggesting that the short-range SW potential might be inadequate for describing the phonon anharmonicity in SLBP.
