On Smart Morphing Wing Aircraft Robust Adaptive Beamforming

The smart morphing wing aircraft (SMWA) is a highly adaptable platform that can be widely used for intelligent warfare due to its real-time variable structure. The flexible conformal array (FCA) is a vital detection component of SMWA, when the deformation parameters of FCA are mismatched or array elements are mutually coupled, detection performance will be degraded. To overcome this problem and ensure robust beamforming for FCA, deviations in array control parameters (ACPs) and array perturbations, the effect of mutual coupling in addition to looking-direction errors should be considered. In this paper, we propose a robust adaptive beamforming (RAB) algorithm by reconstructing a multi-domain interference plus noise covariance matrix (INCM) and estimating steering vector (SV) for FCA. We first reconstruct the INCM using multi-domain processing, including ACP and angular domains. Then, SV estimation is executed through an optimization procedure. Experimental results have shown that the proposed beamformer outperforms existing beamformers in various mismatch conditions and harsh environments, such as high interference-to-noise ratios, and mutual coupling of antennas.

Real-time Monitoring for the Next Core-Collapse Supernova in JUNO

The core-collapse supernova (CCSN) is considered one of the most energetic astrophysical events in the universe. The early and prompt detection of neutrinos before (pre-SN) and during the supernova (SN) burst presents a unique opportunity for multi-messenger observations of CCSN events. In this study, we describe the monitoring concept and present the sensitivity of the system to pre-SN and SN neutrinos at the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), a 20 kton liquid scintillator detector currently under construction in South China. The real-time monitoring system is designed to ensure both prompt alert speed and comprehensive coverage of progenitor stars. It incorporates prompt monitors on the electronic board as well as online monitors at the data acquisition stage. Assuming a false alert rate of 1 per year, this monitoring system exhibits sensitivity to pre-SN neutrinos up to a distance of approximately 1.6 (0.9) kiloparsecs and SN neutrinos up to about 370 (360) kiloparsecs for a progenitor mass of 30 solar masses, considering both normal and inverted mass ordering scenarios. The pointing ability of the CCSN is evaluated by analyzing the accumulated event anisotropy of inverse beta decay interactions from pre-SN or SN neutrinos. This, along with the early alert, can play a crucial role in facilitating follow-up multi-messenger observations of the next galactic or nearby extragalactic CCSN.

JUNO Sensitivity on Proton Decay $p\to \barνK^+$ Searches

The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is a large liquid scintillator detector designed to explore many topics in fundamental physics. In this paper, the potential on searching for proton decay in $p\to \barνK^+$ mode with JUNO is investigated. The kaon and its decay particles feature a clear three-fold coincidence signature that results in a high efficiency for identification. Moreover, the excellent energy resolution of JUNO permits to suppress the sizable background caused by other delayed signals. Based on these advantages, the detection efficiency for the proton decay via $p\to \barνK^+$ is 36.9% with a background level of 0.2 events after 10 years of data taking. The estimated sensitivity based on 200 kton-years exposure is $9.6 \times 10^{33}$ years, competitive with the current best limits on the proton lifetime in this channel.

Weakly-Supervised Action Localization by Hierarchically-structured Latent Attention Modeling

Weakly-supervised action localization aims to recognize and localize action instancese in untrimmed videos with only video-level labels. Most existing models rely on multiple instance learning(MIL), where the predictions of unlabeled instances are supervised by classifying labeled bags. The MIL-based methods are relatively well studied with cogent performance achieved on classification but not on localization. Generally, they locate temporal regions by the video-level classification but overlook the temporal variations of feature semantics. To address this problem, we propose a novel attention-based hierarchically-structured latent model to learn the temporal variations of feature semantics. Specifically, our model entails two components, the first is an unsupervised change-points detection module that detects change-points by learning the latent representations of video features in a temporal hierarchy based on their rates of change, and the second is an attention-based classification model that selects the change-points of the foreground as the boundaries. To evaluate the effectiveness of our model, we conduct extensive experiments on two benchmark datasets, THUMOS-14 and ActivityNet-v1.3. The experiments show that our method outperforms current state-of-the-art methods, and even achieves comparable performance with fully-supervised methods.

Rethinking Imitation-based Planner for Autonomous Driving

In recent years, imitation-based driving planners have reported considerable success. However, due to the absence of a standardized benchmark, the effectiveness of various designs remains unclear. The newly released nuPlan addresses this issue by offering a large-scale real-world dataset and a standardized closed-loop benchmark for equitable comparisons. Utilizing this platform, we conduct a comprehensive study on two fundamental yet underexplored aspects of imitation-based planners: the essential features for ego planning and the effective data augmentation techniques to reduce compounding errors. Furthermore, we highlight an imitation gap that has been overlooked by current learning systems. Finally, integrating our findings, we propose a strong baseline model-PlanTF. Our results demonstrate that a well-designed, purely imitation-based planner can achieve highly competitive performance compared to state-of-the-art methods involving hand-crafted rules and exhibit superior generalization capabilities in long-tail cases. Our models and benchmarks are publicly available. Project website https://jchengai.github.io/planTF.

JUNO sensitivity to the annihilation of MeV dark matter in the galactic halo

We discuss JUNO sensitivity to the annihilation of MeV dark matter in the galactic halo via detecting inverse beta decay reactions of electron anti-neutrinos resulting from the annihilation. We study possible backgrounds to the signature, including the reactor neutrinos, diffuse supernova neutrino background, charged- and neutral-current interactions of atmospheric neutrinos, backgrounds from muon-induced fast neutrons and cosmogenic isotopes. A fiducial volume cut, as well as the pulse shape discrimination and the muon veto are applied to suppress the above backgrounds. It is shown that JUNO sensitivity to the thermally averaged dark matter annihilation rate in 10 years of exposure would be significantly better than the present-day best limit set by Super-Kamiokande and would be comparable to that expected by Hyper-Kamiokande.

Forecast-MAE: Self-supervised Pre-training for Motion Forecasting with Masked Autoencoders

This study explores the application of self-supervised learning (SSL) to the task of motion forecasting, an area that has not yet been extensively investigated despite the widespread success of SSL in computer vision and natural language processing. To address this gap, we introduce Forecast-MAE, an extension of the mask autoencoders framework that is specifically designed for self-supervised learning of the motion forecasting task. Our approach includes a novel masking strategy that leverages the strong interconnections between agents' trajectories and road networks, involving complementary masking of agents' future or history trajectories and random masking of lane segments. Our experiments on the challenging Argoverse 2 motion forecasting benchmark show that Forecast-MAE, which utilizes standard Transformer blocks with minimal inductive bias, achieves competitive performance compared to state-of-the-art methods that rely on supervised learning and sophisticated designs. Moreover, it outperforms the previous self-supervised learning method by a significant margin. Code is available at https://github.com/jchengai/forecast-mae.

E-MLB: Multilevel Benchmark for Event-Based Camera Denoising

Event cameras, such as dynamic vision sensors (DVS), are biologically inspired vision sensors that have advanced over conventional cameras in high dynamic range, low latency and low power consumption, showing great application potential in many fields. Event cameras are more sensitive to junction leakage current and photocurrent as they output differential signals, losing the smoothing function of the integral imaging process in the RGB camera. The logarithmic conversion further amplifies noise, especially in low-contrast conditions. Recently, researchers proposed a series of datasets and evaluation metrics but limitations remain: 1) the existing datasets are small in scale and insufficient in noise diversity, which cannot reflect the authentic working environments of event cameras; and 2) the existing denoising evaluation metrics are mostly referenced evaluation metrics, relying on APS information or manual annotation. To address the above issues, we construct a large-scale event denoising dataset (multilevel benchmark for event denoising, E-MLB) for the first time, which consists of 100 scenes, each with four noise levels, that is 12 times larger than the largest existing denoising dataset. We also propose the first nonreference event denoising metric, the event structural ratio (ESR), which measures the structural intensity of given events. ESR is inspired by the contrast metric, but is independent of the number of events and projection direction. Based on the proposed benchmark and ESR, we evaluate the most representative denoising algorithms, including classic and SOTA, and provide denoising baselines under various scenes and noise levels. Neuro-Modulated Hebbian Learning for Fully Test-Time Adaptation

Fully test-time adaptation aims to adapt the network model based on sequential analysis of input samples during the inference stage to address the cross-domain performance degradation problem of deep neural networks. We take inspiration from the biological plausibility learning where the neuron responses are tuned based on a local synapse-change procedure and activated by competitive lateral inhibition rules. Based on these feed-forward learning rules, we design a soft Hebbian learning process which provides an unsupervised and effective mechanism for online adaptation. We observe that the performance of this feed-forward Hebbian learning for fully test-time adaptation can be significantly improved by incorporating a feedback neuro-modulation layer. It is able to fine-tune the neuron responses based on the external feedback generated by the error back-propagation from the top inference layers. This leads to our proposed neuro-modulated Hebbian learning (NHL) method for fully test-time adaptation. With the unsupervised feed-forward soft Hebbian learning being combined with a learned neuro-modulator to capture feedback from external responses, the source model can be effectively adapted during the testing process. Experimental results on benchmark datasets demonstrate that our proposed method can significantly improve the adaptation performance of network models and outperforms existing state-of-the-art methods.

The JUNO experiment Top Tracker

The main task of the Top Tracker detector of the neutrino reactor experiment Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is to reconstruct and extrapolate atmospheric muon tracks down to the central detector. This muon tracker will help to evaluate the contribution of the cosmogenic background to the signal. The Top Tracker is located above JUNO's water Cherenkov Detector and Central Detector, covering about 60% of the surface above them. The JUNO Top Tracker is constituted by the decommissioned OPERA experiment Target Tracker modules. The technology used consists in walls of two planes of plastic scintillator strips, one per transverse direction. Wavelength shifting fibres collect the light signal emitted by the scintillator strips and guide it to both ends where it is read by multianode photomultiplier tubes. Compared to the OPERA Target Tracker, the JUNO Top Tracker uses new electronics able to cope with the high rate produced by the high rock radioactivity compared to the one in Gran Sasso underground laboratory. This paper will present the new electronics and mechanical structure developed for the Top Tracker of JUNO along with its expected performance based on the current detector simulation.

JUNO sensitivity to $^7$Be, $pep$, and CNO solar neutrinos

The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), the first multi-kton liquid scintillator detector, which is under construction in China, will have a unique potential to perform a real-time measurement of solar neutrinos well below the few MeV threshold typical for Water Cherenkov detectors. JUNO's large target mass and excellent energy resolution are prerequisites for reaching unprecedented levels of precision. In this paper, we provide estimation of the JUNO sensitivity to 7Be, pep, and CNO solar neutrinos that can be obtained via a spectral analysis above the 0.45 MeV threshold. This study is performed assuming different scenarios of the liquid scintillator radiopurity, ranging from the most opti mistic one corresponding to the radiopurity levels obtained by the Borexino experiment, up to the minimum requirements needed to perform the neutrino mass ordering determination with reactor antineutrinos - the main goal of JUNO. Our study shows that in most scenarios, JUNO will be able to improve the current best measurements on 7Be, pep, and CNO solar neutrino fluxes. We also perform a study on the JUNO capability to detect periodical time variations in the solar neutrino flux, such as the day-night modulation induced by neutrino flavor regeneration in Earth, and the modulations induced by temperature changes driven by helioseismic waves.

Superconductivity in CeBeH$_{8}$ and CeBH$_{8}$ at moderate pressures

High-pressure structural searches of superhydrides CeBeH$_8$ and CeBH$_8$ were performed under ambient pressure up to 300 GPa. We identify $Fm\overline{3}m$-CeBeH$_8$ with a superconducting transition temperature $T_{c}$ of 56 K at 10 GPa. Two more phases with spacegroup $R\overline{3}m$ and $C2/m$, were investigated within the increasing pressures. CeBH$_8$ shows a similar phase transition process as CeBeH$_8$ but with higher transition pressures and higher $T_c$. $Fm\overline{3}m$-CeBH$_8$ is predicted to be superconducting above 120 GPa with a maximum $T_{c}$ of 118 K at 150 GPa. $R\overline{3}m$-CeBH$_8$ and $C2/m$-CeBH$_8$ are dynamically stable above 120 GPa and 100 GPa, respectively. The maximum $T_{c}$ is 123 K at 195 GPa for $R\overline{3}m$-CeBH$_8$, and 115 K at 350 GPa for $C2/m$-CeBH$_8$. Our work enriches the family of ternary hydrides and may provide a useful guideline for further search for superconducting hydrides at low and moderate pressures.

Prospects for Detecting the Diffuse Supernova Neutrino Background with JUNO

We present the detection potential for the diffuse supernova neutrino background (DSNB) at the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), using the inverse-beta-decay (IBD) detection channel on free protons. We employ the latest information on the DSNB flux predictions, and investigate in detail the background and its reduction for the DSNB search at JUNO. The atmospheric neutrino induced neutral current (NC) background turns out to be the most critical background, whose uncertainty is carefully evaluated from both the spread of model predictions and an envisaged \textit{in situ} measurement. We also make a careful study on the background suppression with the pulse shape discrimination (PSD) and triple coincidence (TC) cuts. With latest DSNB signal predictions, more realistic background evaluation and PSD efficiency optimization, and additional TC cut, JUNO can reach the significance of 3$σ$ for 3 years of data taking, and achieve better than 5$σ$ after 10 years for a reference DSNB model. In the pessimistic scenario of non-observation, JUNO would strongly improve the limits and exclude a significant region of the model parameter space.

Efficient Speed Planning for Autonomous Driving in Dynamic Environment with Interaction Point Model

Safely interacting with other traffic participants is one of the core requirements for autonomous driving, especially in intersections and occlusions. Most existing approaches are designed for particular scenarios and require significant human labor in parameter tuning to be applied to different situations. To solve this problem, we first propose a learning-based Interaction Point Model (IPM), which describes the interaction between agents with the protection time and interaction priority in a unified manner. We further integrate the proposed IPM into a novel planning framework, demonstrating its effectiveness and robustness through comprehensive simulations in highly dynamic environments.

Mass Testing and Characterization of 20-inch PMTs for JUNO

Main goal of the JUNO experiment is to determine the neutrino mass ordering using a 20kt liquid-scintillator detector. Its key feature is an excellent energy resolution of at least 3 % at 1 MeV, for which its instruments need to meet a certain quality and thus have to be fully characterized. More than 20,000 20-inch PMTs have been received and assessed by JUNO after a detailed testing program which began in 2017 and elapsed for about four years. Based on this mass characterization and a set of specific requirements, a good quality of all accepted PMTs could be ascertained. This paper presents the performed testing procedure with the designed testing systems as well as the statistical characteristics of all 20-inch PMTs intended to be used in the JUNO experiment, covering more than fifteen performance parameters including the photocathode uniformity. This constitutes the largest sample of 20-inch PMTs ever produced and studied in detail to date, i.e. 15,000 of the newly developed 20-inch MCP-PMTs from Northern Night Vision Technology Co. (NNVT) and 5,000 of dynode PMTs from Hamamatsu Photonics K. K.(HPK).

Phase Transitions and Superconductivity in Ternary Hydride Li$_2$SiH$_6$ at High Pressures

We predicted a new ternary hydride Li$_2$SiH$_6$ at high pressures. A systematic structure search in Li$_2$SiH$_6$ compound reveals novel stable phases with intriguing electronic and phonon properties. It is found that Li$_2$SiH$_6$ is dynamically stable from ambient pressure up to 400 GPa with three novel phases: P312, P$\bar{3}$, and P$\bar{6}$2m. The calculation of electron-phonon coupling combined with Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer's argument indicates that this compound may be a candidate for high $T_c$ superconductors under high pressures. In particular, the maximum $T_c$ of $P\bar{6}2m$-Li$_2$SiH$_6$ at 400 GPa reaches 56 K. These findings may pave the way for obtaining room temperature superconductors in dense hydrogen-rich compounds.

Damping signatures at JUNO, a medium-baseline reactor neutrino oscillation experiment

We study damping signatures at the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), a medium-baseline reactor neutrino oscillation experiment. These damping signatures are motivated by various new physics models, including quantum decoherence, $ν_3$ decay, neutrino absorption, and wave packet decoherence. The phenomenological effects of these models can be characterized by exponential damping factors at the probability level. We assess how well JUNO can constrain these damping parameters and how to disentangle these different damping signatures at JUNO. Compared to current experimental limits, JUNO can significantly improve the limits on $τ_3/m_3$ in the $ν_3$ decay model, the width of the neutrino wave packet $σ_x$, and the intrinsic relative dispersion of neutrino momentum $σ_{\rm rel}$.

Exploring neutrinos from proton decays catalyzed by GUT monopoles in the Sun

We explore the neutrino signals from proton decays catalyzed by GUT monopoles in the Sun. Three typical proton decay modes, $p \rightarrow e^+ + (ρ^0, η, ω...) \rightarrow π^+$, $p \rightarrow μ^+ K^0$ and $p \rightarrow \barν_e π^+$, have been analyzed for the Super-Kamiokande experiment. The monopole-induced neutrinos arise from interactions and subsequent decays of the proton decay products. To obtain the neutrino energy spectra, we use the Geant4 software to simulate propagations of daughter particles in the highly-dense solar center. It is found that $K^0$ can produce a large amount of 236 MeV monoenergetic $ν_μ$ neutrinos through the charge exchange process $K^0 + p \rightarrow K^+ + n$ and the subsequent decay $K^+ \rightarrow μ^+ ν_μ$ at rest. Based on this interesting feature, $p \rightarrow μ^+ K^0$ can give the best discovery potential among three decay modes for most of the parameter space. In addition, we present the Super-Kamiokande sensitivities to the monopole flux for three proton decay modes.
