An In-field Automatic Wheat Disease Diagnosis System

Crop diseases are responsible for the major production reduction and economic losses in agricultural industry world- wide. Monitoring for health status of crops is critical to control the spread of diseases and implement effective management. This paper presents an in-field automatic wheat disease diagnosis system based on a weakly super- vised deep learning framework, i.e. deep multiple instance learning, which achieves an integration of identification for wheat diseases and localization for disease areas with only image-level annotation for training images in wild conditions. Furthermore, a new in-field image dataset for wheat disease, Wheat Disease Database 2017 (WDD2017), is collected to verify the effectiveness of our system. Under two different architectures, i.e. VGG-FCN-VD16 and VGG-FCN-S, our system achieves the mean recognition accuracies of 97.95% and 95.12% respectively over 5-fold cross-validation on WDD2017, exceeding the results of 93.27% and 73.00% by two conventional CNN frameworks, i.e. VGG-CNN-VD16 and VGG-CNN-S. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed system outperforms conventional CNN architectures on recognition accuracy under the same amount of parameters, meanwhile main- taining accurate localization for corresponding disease areas. Moreover, the proposed system has been packed into a real-time mobile app to provide support for agricultural disease diagnosis.

Ground states of a Bose-Einstein Condensate in a one-dimensional laser-assisted optical lattice

We study the ground-state behavior of a Bose-Einstein Condensate (BEC) in a Raman-laser-assisted one-dimensional (1D) optical lattice potential forming a multilayer system. We find that, such system can be described by an effective model with spin-orbit coupling (SOC) of pseudospin $(N-1)/2$, where $N$ is the number of layers. Due to the intricate interplay between atomic interactions, SOC and laser-assisted tunnelings, the ground-state phase diagrams generally consist of three phases -- a stripe, a plane wave and a normal phase with zero-momentum, touching at a quantum tricritical point. More important, even though the single-particle states only minimize at zero-momentum for odd $N$, the many-body ground states may still develop finite momenta. The underlying mechanisms are elucidated. Our results provide an alternative way to realize an effective spin-orbit coupling of Bose gas with the Raman-laser-assisted optical lattice, and would also be beneficial to the studies on SOC effects in spinor Bose systems with large spin.

A DNN Framework For Text Image Rectification From Planar Transformations

In this paper, a novel neural network architecture is proposed attempting to rectify text images with mild assumptions. A new dataset of text images is collected to verify our model and open to public. We explored the capability of deep neural network in learning geometric transformation and found the model could segment the text image without explicit supervised segmentation information. Experiments show the architecture proposed can restore planar transformations with wonderful robustness and effectiveness.

Bayesian detection of embryonic gene expression onset in C. elegans

To study how a zygote develops into an embryo with different tissues, large-scale 4D confocal movies of C. elegans embryos have been produced recently by experimental biologists. However, the lack of principled statistical methods for the highly noisy data has hindered the comprehensive analysis of these data sets. We introduced a probabilistic change point model on the cell lineage tree to estimate the embryonic gene expression onset time. A Bayesian approach is used to fit the 4D confocal movies data to the model. Subsequent classification methods are used to decide a model selection threshold and further refine the expression onset time from the branch level to the specific cell time level. Extensive simulations have shown the high accuracy of our method. Its application on real data yields both previously known results and new findings.

The Far-InfraRed Spectroscopic Explorer (FIRSPEX)

The Far-InfraRed Spectroscopic Explorer (FIRSPEX) is a candidate mission in response to a bi-lateral Small-mission call issued by the European Space Agency (ESA) and the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). FIRSPEX is a small satellite (~1m telescope) operating from Low Earth Orbit (LEO). It consists of a number of heterodyne detection bands targeting key molecular and atomic transitions in the terahertz (THz) and Supra-Terahertz (>1 THz) frequency range. The FIRSPEX bands are: [CII] 158 microns (1.9 THz), [NII] 205 microns (1.46 THz), [CI] 370 microns (0.89 THz), CO(6-5) 433 microns (0.69 THz). The primary goal of FIRSPEX is to perform an unbiased all sky spectroscopic survey in four far-infrared lines delivering the first 3D-maps (high spectral resolution) of the Galaxy. The spectroscopic surveys will build on the heritage of Herschel and complement the broad-band all-sky surveys carried out by the IRAS and AKARI observatories. In addition FIRSPEX will enable targeted observations of nearby and distant galaxies allowing for an in-depth study of the ISM components.

Scintillation and Ionization Responses of Liquid Xenon to Low Energy Electronic and Nuclear Recoils at Drift Fields from 236 V/cm to 3.93 kV/cm

We present new measurements of the scintillation and ionization yields in liquid xenon for low energy electronic (about 3--7 keV$_{ee}$) and nuclear recoils (about 8--20 keV$_{nr}$) at different drift fields from 236 V/cm to 3.93 kV/cm, using a three-dimensional sensitive liquid xenon time projection chamber with high energy and position resolutions. Our measurement of signal responses to nuclear recoils agrees with predictions from the NEST model. However, our measured ionization (scintillation) yields for electronic recoils are consistently higher (lower) than those from the NEST model by about 5 e$^-$/keV$_{ee}$ (ph/keV$_{ee}$) at all scanned drift fields. New recombination parameters based on the Thomas-Imel box model are derived from our data. Given the lack of precise measurement of scintillation and ionization yields for low energy electronic recoils in liquid xenon previously, our new measurement provides so far the best available data covering low energy region at different drift fields for liquid xenon detectors relevant to dark matter searches.

Broadband non-reciprocal transmission of sound with invariant frequency

The emergence of "acoustic diode" (AD) capable of rectifying acoustic wave like electrical diodes do to electricity has been believed to be able to offer unconventional manipulation on sound, e.g., to isolate the wrong-way reflection, and therefore have great potential in various important scenarios such as medical ultrasound applications. However, the existing ADs have always been suffering from the problem that the transmitted wave must have either doubled frequency or deviated direction, lacking the most crucial features for achieving such expectations in practice. Here we design and experimentally demonstrate a broadband yet compact non-reciprocal device with hitherto inaccessible functionality of maintaining the original frequency and high forward transmission while virtually blocking the backscattered wave, which is close to what a perfect AD is expected to provide and is promising to play the essential role in realistic acoustic systems like electric diodes do in electrical circuits. Such an extreme ability comes from inherently distinct mechanism based on the exploration of the acoustic characteristics in complex domain, in comparison to the previous designs that only utilize the real part of acoustical parameters. Furthermore, our design enables improving the sensitivity and the robustness of device simultaneously by tailoring an individual structural parameter, which can be regarded as the unique advantage over its electrical or thermal counterparts. We envision our design will take a significant step towards the realization of applicable acoustic one-way devices with potential applications in many scenarios, and inspire the research of non-reciprocal wave manipulation in other fields like electromagnetics.

Queueing Analysis for Preemptive Transmission in Underlay Cognitive Radio Networks

In many cognitive radio applications, there are multiple types of message queues. Existing queueing analysis works in underlay CR networks failed to discuss packets heterogeneity. Therefore high priority packets with impatient waiting time that have preemptive transmission opportunities over low class are investigated. We model the system behavior as a M/M/1+GI queue which is represented by a two dimensional state transition graph. The reneging probability of high priority packets and the average waiting time in two-class priority queues is analyzed. Simulation results demonstrate that the average waiting time of high priority packets decreases with the growing interference power threshold and the average waiting time of the low priority packet is proportional to the arrival rate of the high priority packet. This work may lay the foundation to design efficient MAC protocols and optimize long term system performance by carefully choosing system parameters.

First dark matter search results from the PandaX-I experiment

We report on the first dark-matter (DM) search results from PandaX-I, a low threshold dual-phase xenon experiment operating at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory. In the 37-kg liquid xenon target with 17.4 live-days of exposure, no DM particle candidate event was found. This result sets a stringent limit for low-mass DM particles and disfavors the interpretation of previously-reported positive experimental results. The minimum upper limit, $3.7\times10^{-44}$\,cm$^2$, for the spin-independent isoscalar DM-particle-nucleon scattering cross section is obtained at a DM-particle mass of 49\,GeV/c$^2$ at 90\% confidence level.

High Resolution Gamma Ray Detection in a Dual Phase Xenon Time Projection Chamber

Dual phase Xenon Time Projection Chambers (XeTPCs) are being used by several experiments as a promising technique for direct detection of dark matter. We report on the design and performance of a small 3-D sensitive dual phase XeTPC. The position resolution is 2 mm in the center of detector, limited by the hole size of the mesh at the proportional scintillation region. An energy resolution of 1.6%(σ /E) for 662 keV gamma rays is achieved by combining the ionization and scintillation signals at a drift field of 0.5 kV/cm. This represents the best energy resolution achieved among liquid xenon detectors. The energy resolution is only slightly dependent on drift field. Better than 2% energy resolution (σ /E) for 662 keV gamma rays can be achieved for drift fields between 100 V/cm and 2 kV/cm. With high position and energy resolutions, a dual phase XeTPC has also potential applications in surveys for neutrinoless double-beta decay and in gamma ray imaging.

Hierarchical Liouville-space approach for accurate and universal characterization of quantum impurity systems

A hierarchical equations of motion (HEOM) based numerical approach is developed for accurate and efficient evaluation of dynamical observables of strongly correlated quantum impurity systems. This approach is capable of describing quantitatively Kondo resonance and Fermi liquid characteristics, achieving the accuracy of latest high-level numerical renormalization group approach, as demonstrated on single-impurity Anderson model systems. Its application to a two-impurity Anderson model results in differential conductance versus external bias, which correctly reproduces the continuous transition from Kondo states of individual impurity to singlet spin-states formed between two impurities. The outstanding performance on characterizing both equilibrium and nonequilibrium properties of quantum impurity systems makes the HEOM approach potentially useful for addressing strongly correlated lattice systems in the frame work of dynamical mean field theory.

Optimized hierarchical equations of motion for Drude dissipation

The hierarchical equations of motion theory for Drude dissipation is optimized, with a convenient convergence criterion proposed in advance of numerical propagations. The theoretical construction is on basis of a Padé spectrum decomposition that has been qualified to be the best sum-over-poles scheme for quantum distribution function. The resulting hierarchical dynamics under the {\em apriori} convergence criterion are exemplified with a benchmark spin-boson system, and also the transient absorption and two-dimensional spectroscopy of a model exciton dimer system.

Chiral corrections to heavy quark-diquark symmetry predictions for doubly heavy baryon zero-recoil semileptonic decay

This paper studies the leading chiral corrections to heavy quark-diquark symmetry predictions for doubly heavy baryon semileptonic decay form factors. We derive the coupling between heavy diquarks and weak current in the limit of heavy quark-diquark symmetry, and construct the chiral Lagrangian for doubly heavy baryons coupled to weak current. We evaluate chiral corrections to doubly heavy baryon zero-recoil semileptonic decay for both unquenched and partially quenched QCD. This theory is used to derive chiral extrapolation expressions for measurements of form factors of doubly heavy baryon zero-recoil semileptonic decay in lattice QCD simulations.

Pion Polarizabilities and Volume Effects in Lattice QCD

We use chiral perturbation theory to study the extraction of pion electromagnetic polarizabilities from lattice QCD. Chiral extrapolation formulae are derived for partially quenched QCD, and quenched QCD simulations. On a torus, volume dependence of electromagnetic observables is complicated by SO(4) breaking, as well as photon zero-mode interactions. We determine finite volume corrections to the Compton scattering tensor of pions. We argue, however, that such results cannot be used to ascertain volume corrections to polarizabilities determined in lattice QCD with background field methods. Connection is lacking because momentum expansions are not permitted in finite volume. Our argument also applies to form factors. Volume effects for electromagnetic moments cannot be deduced from finite volume form factors.

Current Renormalization in Finite Volume

For finite volume field theories with discrete translational invariance, conserved currents can be additively renormalized by infrared effects. We demonstrate this for pions using chiral perturbation theory coupled to electromagnetism in a periodic box. Gauge invariant single particle effective theories are constructed to explain these results. In such theories, current renormalization arises from operators involving the zero mode of the gauge field. No contradictions with Ward identities, or low-energy theorems are encountered.

Chiral Lagrangian with Heavy Quark-Diquark Symmetry

We construct a chiral Lagrangian for doubly heavy baryons and heavy mesons that is invariant under heavy quark-diquark symmetry at leading order and includes the leading O(1/m_Q) symmetry violating operators. The theory is used to predict the electromagnetic decay width of the J=3/2 member of the ground state doubly heavy baryon doublet. Numerical estimates are provided for doubly charm baryons. We also calculate chiral corrections to doubly heavy baryon masses and strong decay widths of low lying excited doubly heavy baryons.
