Twinning induced by elastic anisotropy in FCC crystals

Dislocation slip and deformation twin are widely regarded as two important mechanisms of active competition in the process of plastic deformation. Calculating and comparing the critical resolved shear stress (CRSS) of two deformation modes are the key to discussing the mechanical properties reflected by different mechanisms in crystals. Here, the paper proposes a model to predict the CRSS of discrete twins, resembling thin layers, using the elastic anisotropy theory and a macroscopic energy perspective. In addition, the directionality of deformation twinning is also verified. We investigated twinning in FCC crystals to illustrate the methodology, and predicted the CRSS of twinning under different variables such as temperature and strain rate, both of which were in excellent agreement with experimental and other theory results. It draws the conclusion that we can promote twinning nucleation by applying shear stress along the <112> direction to reduce the interface energy as a resistance term and increase the difference in strain energy for twinning nucleation. This conclusion provides a guiding direction for exploring and accurately predicting the conditions of twinning in FCC crystals in future.

Decoupling Degradation and Content Processing for Adverse Weather Image Restoration

Adverse weather image restoration strives to recover clear images from those affected by various weather types, such as rain, haze, and snow. Each weather type calls for a tailored degradation removal approach due to its unique impact on images. Conversely, content reconstruction can employ a uniform approach, as the underlying image content remains consistent. Although previous techniques can handle multiple weather types within a single network, they neglect the crucial distinction between these two processes, limiting the quality of restored images. This work introduces a novel adverse weather image restoration method, called DDCNet, which decouples the degradation removal and content reconstruction process at the feature level based on their channel statistics. Specifically, we exploit the unique advantages of the Fourier transform in both these two processes: (1) the degradation information is mainly located in the amplitude component of the Fourier domain, and (2) the Fourier domain contains global information. The former facilitates channel-dependent degradation removal operation, allowing the network to tailor responses to various adverse weather types; the latter, by integrating Fourier's global properties into channel-independent content features, enhances network capacity for consistent global content reconstruction. We further augment the degradation removal process with a degradation mapping loss function. Extensive experiments demonstrate our method achieves state-of-the-art performance in multiple adverse weather removal benchmarks.

Why Does ChatGPT Fall Short in Providing Truthful Answers?

Recent advancements in large language models, such as ChatGPT, have demonstrated significant potential to impact various aspects of human life. However, ChatGPT still faces challenges in providing reliable and accurate answers to user questions. To better understand the model's particular weaknesses in providing truthful answers, we embark an in-depth exploration of open-domain question answering. Specifically, we undertake a detailed examination of ChatGPT's failures, categorized into: comprehension, factuality, specificity, and inference. We further pinpoint factuality as the most contributing failure and identify two critical abilities associated with factuality: knowledge memorization and knowledge recall. Through experiments focusing on factuality, we propose several potential enhancement strategies. Our findings suggest that augmenting the model with granular external knowledge and cues for knowledge recall can enhance the model's factuality in answering questions.

A WINNER+ Based 3-D Non-Stationary Wideband MIMO Channel Model

In this paper, a three-dimensional (3-D) non-stationary wideband multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel model based on the WINNER+ channel model is proposed. The angular distributions of clusters in both the horizontal and vertical planes are jointly considered. The receiver and clusters can be moving, which makes the model more general. Parameters including number of clusters, powers, delays, azimuth angles of departure (AAoDs), azimuth angles of arrival (AAoAs), elevation angles of departure (EAoDs), and elevation angles of arrival (EAoAs) are time-variant. The cluster time evolution is modeled using a birth-death process. Statistical properties, including spatial cross-correlation function (CCF), temporal autocorrelation function (ACF), Doppler power spectrum density (PSD), level-crossing rate (LCR), average fading duration (AFD), and stationary interval are investigated and analyzed. The LCR, AFD, and stationary interval of the proposed channel model are validated against the measurement data. Numerical and simulation results show that the proposed channel model has the ability to reproduce the main properties of real non-stationary channels. Furthermore, the proposed channel model can be adapted to various communication scenarios by adjusting different parameter values.

CD-GAN: a robust fusion-based generative adversarial network for unsupervised remote sensing change detection with heterogeneous sensors

In the context of Earth observation, change detection boils down to comparing images acquired at different times by sensors of possibly different spatial and/or spectral resolutions or different modalities (e.g., optical or radar). Even when considering only optical images, this task has proven to be challenging as soon as the sensors differ by their spatial and/or spectral resolutions. This paper proposes a novel unsupervised change detection method dedicated to images acquired by such so-called heterogeneous optical sensors. It capitalizes on recent advances which formulate the change detection task into a robust fusion framework. Adopting this formulation, the work reported in this paper shows that any off-the-shelf network trained beforehand to fuse optical images of different spatial and/or spectral resolutions can be easily complemented with a network of the same architecture and embedded into an adversarial framework to perform change detection. A comparison with state-of-the-art change detection methods demonstrates the versatility and the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

A Novel 3D Non-stationary Localization-assisted ISAC Channel Model

Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) has attracted wide attention as an emerging application scenario for the sixth generation (6G) wireless communication system. In this paper, a novel three-dimensional (3D) non-stationary localization-assisted ISAC geometry-based stochastic model (GBSM) is proposed. The locations of the first-bounce scatterer and last-bounce scatterer in the communication channel can be estimated by the particle filter with the assistance of backscattering sensing. The important channel statistical properties of the proposed channel model are simulated and compared with the ray tracing (RT) results, including the delay spread, azimuth angle of departure/arrival (AAoD/AAoA) spread, and elevation angle of departure/arrival (EAoD/EAoA) spread. The simulation results of the proposed channel model show a good agreement with the RT results, which proves the correctness of the proposed channel model. Utilizing the localization parameters of scatterers, the proposed ISAC channel model can better map the real environment.

Multi-step Jailbreaking Privacy Attacks on ChatGPT

With the rapid progress of large language models (LLMs), many downstream NLP tasks can be well solved given appropriate prompts. Though model developers and researchers work hard on dialog safety to avoid generating harmful content from LLMs, it is still challenging to steer AI-generated content (AIGC) for the human good. As powerful LLMs are devouring existing text data from various domains (e.g., GPT-3 is trained on 45TB texts), it is natural to doubt whether the private information is included in the training data and what privacy threats can these LLMs and their downstream applications bring. In this paper, we study the privacy threats from OpenAI's ChatGPT and the New Bing enhanced by ChatGPT and show that application-integrated LLMs may cause new privacy threats. To this end, we conduct extensive experiments to support our claims and discuss LLMs' privacy implications.

Let the Pretrained Language Models "Imagine" for Short Texts Topic Modeling

Topic models are one of the compelling methods for discovering latent semantics in a document collection. However, it assumes that a document has sufficient co-occurrence information to be effective. However, in short texts, co-occurrence information is minimal, which results in feature sparsity in document representation. Therefore, existing topic models (probabilistic or neural) mostly fail to mine patterns from them to generate coherent topics. In this paper, we take a new approach to short-text topic modeling to address the data-sparsity issue by extending short text into longer sequences using existing pre-trained language models (PLMs). Besides, we provide a simple solution extending a neural topic model to reduce the effect of noisy out-of-topics text generation from PLMs. We observe that our model can substantially improve the performance of short-text topic modeling. Extensive experiments on multiple real-world datasets under extreme data sparsity scenarios show that our models can generate high-quality topics outperforming state-of-the-art models.

VER: Unifying Verbalizing Entities and Relations

Entities and relationships between entities are vital in the real world. Essentially, we understand the world by understanding entities and relations. For instance, to understand a field, e.g., computer science, we need to understand the relevant concepts, e.g., machine learning, and the relationships between concepts, e.g., machine learning and artificial intelligence. To understand a person, we should first know who he/she is and how he/she is related to others. To understand entities and relations, humans may refer to natural language descriptions. For instance, when learning a new scientific term, people usually start by reading its definition in dictionaries or encyclopedias. To know the relationship between two entities, humans tend to create a sentence to connect them. In this paper, we propose VER: a unified model for Verbalizing Entities and Relations. Specifically, we attempt to build a system that takes any entity or entity set as input and generates a sentence to represent entities and relations. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our model can generate high-quality sentences describing entities and entity relationships and facilitate various tasks on entities and relations, including definition modeling, relation modeling, and generative commonsense reasoning.

Expository Text Generation: Imitate, Retrieve, Paraphrase

Expository documents are vital resources for conveying complex information to readers. Despite their usefulness, writing expository text by hand is a challenging process that requires careful content planning, obtaining facts from multiple sources, and the ability to clearly synthesize these facts. To ease these burdens, we propose the task of expository text generation, which seeks to automatically generate an accurate and stylistically consistent expository text for a topic by intelligently searching a knowledge source. We solve our task by developing IRP, a framework that overcomes the limitations of retrieval-augmented models and iteratively performs content planning, fact retrieval, and rephrasing. Through experiments on three diverse, newly-collected datasets, we show that IRP produces factual and organized expository texts that accurately inform readers.

Text Fact Transfer

Text style transfer is a prominent task that aims to control the style of text without inherently changing its factual content. To cover more text modification applications, such as adapting past news for current events and repurposing educational materials, we propose the task of text fact transfer, which seeks to transfer the factual content of a source text between topics without modifying its style. We find that existing language models struggle with text fact transfer, due to their inability to preserve the specificity and phrasing of the source text, and tendency to hallucinate errors. To address these issues, we design ModQGA, a framework that minimally modifies a source text with a novel combination of end-to-end question generation and specificity-aware question answering. Through experiments on four existing datasets adapted for text fact transfer, we show that ModQGA can accurately transfer factual content without sacrificing the style of the source text.

Theoretical study of phonon-mediated superconductivity beyond Migdal-Eliashberg approximation and Coulomb pseudopotential

In previous theoretical studies of phonon-mediated superconductors, the electron-phonon coupling is treated by solving the Migdal-Eliashberg equations under the bare vertex approximation, whereas the effect of Coulomb repulsion is incorporated by introducing one single pseudopotential parameter. These two approximations become unreliable in low carrier-density superconductors in which the vertex corrections are not small and the Coulomb interaction is poorly screened. Here, we shall go beyond these two approximations and employ the Dyson-Schwinger equation approach to handle the interplay of electron-phonon interaction and Coulomb interaction in a self-consistent way. We first derive the exact Dyson-Schwinger integral equation of the full electron propagator. Such an equation contains several unknown single-particle propagators and fermion-boson vertex functions, and thus seems to be intractable. To solve this difficulty, we further derive a number of identities satisfied by all the relevant propagators and vertex functions and then use these identities to show that the exact Dyson-Schwinger equation of electron propagator is actually self-closed. This self-closed equation takes into account not only all the vertex corrections, but also the mutual influence between electron-phonon interaction and Coulomb interaction. Solving it by using proper numerical methods leads to the superconducting temperature $T_{c}$ and other quantities. As an application of the approach, we compute the $T_{c}$ of the interfacial superconductivity realized in the one-unit-cell FeSe/SrTiO$_{3}$ system. We find that $T_{c}$ can be strongly influenced by the vertex corrections and the competition between phonon-mediated attraction and Coulomb repulsion.

Ask To The Point: Open-Domain Entity-Centric Question Generation

We introduce a new task called *entity-centric question generation* (ECQG), motivated by real-world applications such as topic-specific learning, assisted reading, and fact-checking. The task aims to generate questions from an entity perspective. To solve ECQG, we propose a coherent PLM-based framework GenCONE with two novel modules: content focusing and question verification. The content focusing module first identifies a focus as "what to ask" to form draft questions, and the question verification module refines the questions afterwards by verifying the answerability. We also construct a large-scale open-domain dataset from SQuAD to support this task. Our extensive experiments demonstrate that GenCONE significantly and consistently outperforms various baselines, and two modules are effective and complementary in generating high-quality questions.

Descriptive Knowledge Graph in Biomedical Domain

We present a novel system that automatically extracts and generates informative and descriptive sentences from the biomedical corpus and facilitates the efficient search for relational knowledge. Unlike previous search engines or exploration systems that retrieve unconnected passages, our system organizes descriptive sentences as a relational graph, enabling researchers to explore closely related biomedical entities (e.g., diseases treated by a chemical) or indirectly connected entities (e.g., potential drugs for treating a disease). Our system also uses ChatGPT and a fine-tuned relation synthesis model to generate concise and reliable descriptive sentences from retrieved information, reducing the need for extensive human reading effort. With our system, researchers can easily obtain both high-level knowledge and detailed references and interactively steer to the information of interest. We spotlight the application of our system in COVID-19 research, illustrating its utility in areas such as drug repurposing and literature curation.

A Refined Algorithm for the Adaptive Optimal Output Regulation Problem

Given a linear unknown system with $m$ inputs, $p$ outputs, $n$ dimensional state vector, and $q$ dimensional ecosystem, the problem of the adaptive optimal output regulation of this system boils down to iteratively solving a set of linear equations and each of these equations contains $\frac{n (n+1)}{2} + (m+q)n$ unknown variables. In this paper, we refine the existing algorithm by decoupling each of these linear equations into two lower-dimensional linear equations. The first one contains $nq$ unknown variables, and the second one contains $\frac{n (n+1)}{2} + mn$ unknown variables. As a result, the solvability conditions for these equations are also significantly weakened.

Empowering Low-Light Image Enhancer through Customized Learnable Priors

Deep neural networks have achieved remarkable progress in enhancing low-light images by improving their brightness and eliminating noise. However, most existing methods construct end-to-end mapping networks heuristically, neglecting the intrinsic prior of image enhancement task and lacking transparency and interpretability. Although some unfolding solutions have been proposed to relieve these issues, they rely on proximal operator networks that deliver ambiguous and implicit priors. In this work, we propose a paradigm for low-light image enhancement that explores the potential of customized learnable priors to improve the transparency of the deep unfolding paradigm. Motivated by the powerful feature representation capability of Masked Autoencoder (MAE), we customize MAE-based illumination and noise priors and redevelop them from two perspectives: 1) \textbf{structure flow}: we train the MAE from a normal-light image to its illumination properties and then embed it into the proximal operator design of the unfolding architecture; and m2) \textbf{optimization flow}: we train MAE from a normal-light image to its gradient representation and then employ it as a regularization term to constrain noise in the model output. These designs improve the interpretability and representation capability of the model.Extensive experiments on multiple low-light image enhancement datasets demonstrate the superiority of our proposed paradigm over state-of-the-art methods. Learned Image Reasoning Prior Penetrates Deep Unfolding Network for Panchromatic and Multi-Spectral Image Fusion

The success of deep neural networks for pan-sharpening is commonly in a form of black box, lacking transparency and interpretability. To alleviate this issue, we propose a novel model-driven deep unfolding framework with image reasoning prior tailored for the pan-sharpening task. Different from existing unfolding solutions that deliver the proximal operator networks as the uncertain and vague priors, our framework is motivated by the content reasoning ability of masked autoencoders (MAE) with insightful designs. Specifically, the pre-trained MAE with spatial masking strategy, acting as intrinsic reasoning prior, is embedded into unfolding architecture. Meanwhile, the pre-trained MAE with spatial-spectral masking strategy is treated as the regularization term within loss function to constrain the spatial-spectral consistency. Such designs penetrate the image reasoning prior into deep unfolding networks while improving its interpretability and representation capability. The uniqueness of our framework is that the holistic learning process is explicitly integrated with the inherent physical mechanism underlying the pan-sharpening task. Extensive experiments on multiple satellite datasets demonstrate the superiority of our method over the existing state-of-the-art approaches. Bearing-based Formation with Disturbance Rejection

This paper considers the problem of the bearing-based formation control with disturbance rejection for a group of agents under the leader-follower structure. The disturbances are in the form of a trigonometric polynomial with arbitrary unknown amplitudes, unknown initial phases, and known or unknown frequencies. For the case of the known frequencies, we employ the canonical internal model to solve the problem, and, for the case of the unknown frequencies, we combine the canonical internal model and {some} distributed adaptive control technique to deal with the problem. It is noted that the existing results can only handle constant input disturbances by continuous control laws or disturbances with known {bounds} by discontinuous control laws. The first case is a special case of our result. The second case cannot cover our results because the bound of our disturbance is unknown. Moreover, our control law is smooth.
