Tencent AVS: A Holistic Ads Video Dataset for Multi-modal Scene Segmentation

Temporal video segmentation and classification have been advanced greatly by public benchmarks in recent years. However, such research still mainly focuses on human actions, failing to describe videos in a holistic view. In addition, previous research tends to pay much attention to visual information yet ignores the multi-modal nature of videos. To fill this gap, we construct the Tencent `Ads Video Segmentation'~(TAVS) dataset in the ads domain to escalate multi-modal video analysis to a new level. TAVS describes videos from three independent perspectives as `presentation form', `place', and `style', and contains rich multi-modal information such as video, audio, and text. TAVS is organized hierarchically in semantic aspects for comprehensive temporal video segmentation with three levels of categories for multi-label classification, e.g., `place' - `working place' - `office'. Therefore, TAVS is distinguished from previous temporal segmentation datasets due to its multi-modal information, holistic view of categories, and hierarchical granularities. It includes 12,000 videos, 82 classes, 33,900 segments, 121,100 shots, and 168,500 labels. Accompanied with TAVS, we also present a strong multi-modal video segmentation baseline coupled with multi-label class prediction. Extensive experiments are conducted to evaluate our proposed method as well as existing representative methods to reveal key challenges of our dataset TAVS.

Comparison of physics-based prediction models of solar cycle 25

Physics-based solar cycle predictions provide an effective way to verify our understanding of the solar cycle. Before the start of cycle 25, several physics-based solar cycle predictions were developed. These predictions use flux transport dynamo (FTD) models, surface flux transport (SFT) models, or a combination of the two kinds of models. The common physics behind these predictions is that the surface poloidal fields around cycle minimum dominate the subsequent cycle strength. In the review, we first give short introductions to SFT and FTD models. Then we compare 7 physics-based prediction models from 4 aspects, which are what the predictor is, how to get the predictor, how to use the predictor, and what to predict. Finally, we demonstrate the large effect of assimilated magnetograms on predictions by two SFT numerical tests. We suggest that uncertainties in both initial magnetograms and sunspot emergence should be included in such physics-based predictions because of their large effects on the results. In addition, in the review we put emphasis on what we can learn from different predictions, rather than an assessment of prediction results.

A Potential New Mechanism for the Butterfly Diagram of the Solar Cycle: Latitude-dependent Radial Flux Transport

The butterfly diagram of the solar cycle is the equatorward migration of the emergence latitudes of sunspots as the solar cycle evolves. Revealing the mechanism for the butterfly diagram is essential for understanding the solar and stellar dynamo. The equatorward meridional flow at the base of the convection zone (CZ) was believed to be responsible for the butterfly diagram. However, helioseismological studies indicate controversial forms of the flow, and even present poleward flow at the base of the CZ, which poses a big challenge to the widely accepted mechanism. This motivates us to propose a new mechanism in this study. Using a data-driven Babcock-Leighton-type dynamo model, we carry out numerical simulations to explore how the latitude-dependent radial flux transport affects the latitudinal migration of the toroidal field, under different meridional flow profiles. The results indicate that when the radial transport of the poloidal field at higher latitudes is sufficiently faster, the toroidal fields of a new cycle at higher latitudes are generated earlier than that at lower latitudes, and vice versa. Thus, the butterfly diagram is suggested to correspond to the time- and latitude-dependent regeneration of the toroidal field due to the latitude-dependent radial transport of the poloidal flux.

The linearized second law for any higher curvature gravity with the scalar and the electromagnetic fields

The first law of black hole thermodynamics is suitable for any diffeomorphism invariant gravity, and the entropy in the first law is the Wald entropy which is highly dependent on the non-minimal coupling interactions in the theory of gravity. However, whether the Wald entropy still satisfies the second law needs to be investigated. The entropy of black holes obeying the linearized second law in arbitrary high-order curvature gravity is given, which can be written as the Wald entropy with correction terms. It indicates that the Wald entropy is not commonly obeying the linearized second law for any high-order curvature gravity. When the interactions of gravity with matter fields are included in the theory of gravity, the entropy of black holes obeying the linearized second law has not been obtained in this case. Considering any high-order curvature gravity with the scalar and the electromagnetic fields, from the Raychaudhuri equation, the entropy obeying the linearized second law is generally obtained, which can be expressed as the Wald entropy with correction terms as well. The entropy does not include the contribution from the electromagnetic fields, and the correction terms contain the contribution from the minimal coupling interaction between gravity and the scalar fields. Since the entropy satisfying the linearized second law depends only on the non-minimal coupling interaction of gravity in previous research, this result upends our understanding of the entropy of black holes obeying the linearized second law in any gravitational theory with matter fields.

Spin-induced scalarization of Kerr-Newman black hole in extended scalar-tensor theory

With certain non-minimal coupling between a massless scalar field and the Gauss-Bonnet curvature invariant in the extended scalar-tensor-Gauss-Bonnet (ESTGB) field theory, tachyonic instability of Kerr-Newman (KN) black hole is promoted. Critical spin and charge for the onset of the spontaneous scalarization phenomenon for the KN black hole are calculated in the infinitely large coupling limit. Then analytical formula for the coupling-strength-dependent critical existence line is obtained for the black-hole-scalar-field configuration in a finite large coupling regime. Moreover, numerical methods are used to perform threshold curves which are boundaries between bald KN black holes and their hairy counterparts. Intriguingly, we get to know KN black hole can be scalarized in the vanishing spin limit in ESTGB theory.

AutoAttention: Automatic Field Pair Selection for Attention in User Behavior Modeling

In Click-through rate (CTR) prediction models, a user's interest is usually represented as a fixed-length vector based on her history behaviors. Recently, several methods are proposed to learn an attentive weight for each user behavior and conduct weighted sum pooling. However, these methods only manually select several fields from the target item side as the query to interact with the behaviors, neglecting the other target item fields, as well as user and context fields. Directly including all these fields in the attention may introduce noise and deteriorate the performance. In this paper, we propose a novel model named AutoAttention, which includes all item/user/context side fields as the query, and assigns a learnable weight for each field pair between behavior fields and query fields. Pruning on these field pairs via these learnable weights lead to automatic field pair selection, so as to identify and remove noisy field pairs. Though including more fields, the computation cost of AutoAttention is still low due to using a simple attention function and field pair selection. Extensive experiments on the public dataset and Tencent's production dataset demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Tunable VUV Frequency Comb for $^{\mathrm{229m}}$Th Nuclear Spectroscopy

Laser spectroscopy of the $^{\mathrm{229m}}$Th nuclear clock transition is necessary for the future construction of a nuclear-based optical clock. Precision laser sources with broad spectral coverage in the vacuum ultraviolet are needed for this task. Here, we present a tunable vacuum-ultraviolet frequency comb based on cavity-enhanced seventh-harmonic generation. Its tunable spectrum covers the current uncertainty range of the $^{\mathrm{229m}}$Th nuclear clock transition.

Solar Ring Mission: Building a Panorama of the Sun and Inner-heliosphere

Solar Ring (SOR) is a proposed space science mission to monitor and study the Sun and inner heliosphere from a full 360° perspective in the ecliptic plane. It will deploy three 120°-separated spacecraft on the 1-AU orbit. The first spacecraft, S1, locates 30° upstream of the Earth, the second, S2, 90° downstream, and the third, S3, completes the configuration. This design with necessary science instruments, e.g., the Doppler-velocity and vector magnetic field imager, wide-angle coronagraph, and in-situ instruments, will allow us to establish many unprecedented capabilities: (1) provide simultaneous Doppler-velocity observations of the whole solar surface to understand the deep interior, (2) provide vector magnetograms of the whole photosphere - the inner boundary of the solar atmosphere and heliosphere, (3) provide the information of the whole lifetime evolution of solar featured structures, and (4) provide the whole view of solar transients and space weather in the inner heliosphere. With these capabilities, Solar Ring mission aims to address outstanding questions about the origin of solar cycle, the origin of solar eruptions and the origin of extreme space weather events. The successful accomplishment of the mission will construct a panorama of the Sun and inner-heliosphere, and therefore advance our understanding of the star and the space environment that holds our life.

Splitting the Echoes of Black Holes in Einstein-nonlinear Electrodynamic Theories

Black hole echo is an important observable that can help us better understand gravitational theories. We present that the non-linear electrodynamic black holes can admit the multi-peak effective potential for the scalar perturbations, which can give rise to the echoes. After choosing suitable parameters, the effective potential can exhibit a structure with more than two peaks. Putting the initial wave packet released outside the peaks, we find that the time-domain profile of the echo will split when the peaks of the effective potential change from two to three. This is a phenomenon of black hole echo and it might be possible to determine the geometric structure of the black hole according to this phenomenon through gravitational wave detection.

Internal structures and circular orbits for test particles

We explore how the internal structure of a test particle affects its equatorial stable circular orbits around the Kerr black hole with or without a cosmological constant. To this end, we first explicitly write equations of motion for a test particle in the pole-dipole-quadrupole approximation specifying the quadrupole momentum tensor to a spin-induced model. Then we calculate characteristic quantities -- radius, angular momentum, energy, angular velocity, and impact parameter -- for the particles on the stable circular orbits. Once the pole-dipole-quadrupole approximation is taken, we find that for a particle on an innermost stable circular orbit, all characteristic quantities, except the angular velocity, become greater relative to the pole-dipole case. In contrast, for a particle on an outermost stable circular orbit, which only exists in the case of the spacetime background being asymptotically de Sitter, it is the radius that becomes smaller while all other quantities become greater.

Higher dimensional Reissner-Nordström black holes supporting static scalar shells

We analytically study scalarization of higher-dimensional charged Reissner-Nordström (RN) black hole. It is shown that static massive scalar field which is non-minimally coupled to Gauss-Bonnet invariant can be supported by higher-dimensional black hole in super-critical charge regime $Q/M\ge \bar{C}_d$ with $Q, M$ charge and mass of the black hole and $\bar{C}_d$ some unitless spacetime dimension-dependent quantity. Moreover, we show that the static massive scalar shell can be quite thin in the large mass regime $μM^{\frac{1}{d-3}}\gg 1$ with $μ$ mass of the scalar field.

Towards In-distribution Compatibility in Out-of-distribution Detection

Deep neural network, despite its remarkable capability of discriminating targeted in-distribution samples, shows poor performance on detecting anomalous out-of-distribution data. To address this defect, state-of-the-art solutions choose to train deep networks on an auxiliary dataset of outliers. Various training criteria for these auxiliary outliers are proposed based on heuristic intuitions. However, we find that these intuitively designed outlier training criteria can hurt in-distribution learning and eventually lead to inferior performance. To this end, we identify three causes of the in-distribution incompatibility: contradictory gradient, false likelihood, and distribution shift. Based on our new understandings, we propose a new out-of-distribution detection method by adapting both the top-design of deep models and the loss function. Our method achieves in-distribution compatibility by pursuing less interference with the probabilistic characteristic of in-distribution features. On several benchmarks, our method not only achieves the state-of-the-art out-of-distribution detection performance but also improves the in-distribution accuracy.

DPTNet: A Dual-Path Transformer Architecture for Scene Text Detection

The prosperity of deep learning contributes to the rapid progress in scene text detection. Among all the methods with convolutional networks, segmentation-based ones have drawn extensive attention due to their superiority in detecting text instances of arbitrary shapes and extreme aspect ratios. However, the bottom-up methods are limited to the performance of their segmentation models. In this paper, we propose DPTNet (Dual-Path Transformer Network), a simple yet effective architecture to model the global and local information for the scene text detection task. We further propose a parallel design that integrates the convolutional network with a powerful self-attention mechanism to provide complementary clues between the attention path and convolutional path. Moreover, a bi-directional interaction module across the two paths is developed to provide complementary clues in the channel and spatial dimensions. We also upgrade the concentration operation by adding an extra multi-head attention layer to it. Our DPTNet achieves state-of-the-art results on the MSRA-TD500 dataset, and provides competitive results on other standard benchmarks in terms of both detection accuracy and speed.

Weak Cosmic Censorship Conjecture of Hairy Black Holes in Einstein Gravity

Apart from the Kerr-Newman black holes, the hairy black holes in general relativity have been widely investigated in the gravity and cosmology. In this paper, we extend the Sorce-Wald method to prove the weak cosmic censorship conjecture (WCCC) of the static and spherically symmetric hairy black holes in the Einstein gravity without using the explicit expressions of the metric and lagrangian for matter fields. We examine the WCCC in the collision process without requiring the spherically symmetry of the perturbation matter fields. After assuming the stability condition of spacetime and applying the Gaussian null coordinates into the variational identities, we derive the first two order perturbation inequalities which reflects the null energy condition of the matter fields. As a result, we find that nearly extremal static hairy black hole cannot be destroyed in the above perturbation process under the second-order approximation. Our result implies that the valid of the WCCC is universal for the hairy black hole in the Einstein gravity as long as the matter fields satisfy the null energy condition under the perturbation level.

Remarkably strong magnetic response in molecules with polar groups

For more than a century, electricity and magnetism have been believed to always exhibit inextricable link due to the symmetry in electromagnetism. At the interface, polar groups that have polar charges, are indispensable to be considered, which interact directly with other polar charges/external charges/external electric fields. However, there is no report on the corresponding magnetic properties on these polar groups. Clearly, such asymmetry, that is, only the interaction between the polar groups and charges, is out of bounds. Here we show that those molecules with considerable polar groups, such as cellulose acetate (CA) and other cellulose derivatives with different polar groups, can have strong magnetic response, indicating that they are strongly paramagnetic. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation shows that the polarity greatly reduces the excitation energy from the state without net spin (singlet) to the state with net spin (triplet), making the considerable existence of magnetic moments on the polar groups. We note that the hydrophobic groups in these molecules have no magnetic moments, however, they make the molecules aggregate to amply the magnetic effect of the magnetic moments in the polar groups, so that these magnetic moments can induce the strong paramagnetism. Our observations suggest a recovery of the symmetry with inextricable link between the electricity and magnetism at the interface. The findings leave many imaginations of the role of the magnetic interaction in biological systems as well as other magnetic applications considering that many of those polar materials are biological materials, pharmaceutical materials, chemical raw materials, and even an essential hormone in agricultural production.

Generalized Covariant Entropy Bound in Lanczos-Lovelock Gravity

In this paper, we investigate the generalized covariant entropy bound in the theory where the Einstein gravity is perturbed by the higher-order Lovelock terms. After replacing the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy with the Jacobson-Myers entropy and introducing two reasonable physical assumptions, we showed that the corresponding generalized covariant entropy bound is satisfied under a higher-order approximation of the perturbation from the higher-order Lovelock terms. Our result implies that the Jacobson-Myers entropy strictly obeys the entropy bound under the perturbation level, and the generalized second law of Lanczos-Lovelock gravity is also satisfied when the Einstein gravity is perturbed by the higher-order Lovelock terms.
