Quantum Neural Network Inspired Hardware Adaptable Ansatz for Efficient Quantum Simulation of Chemical Systems

The variational quantum eigensolver is a promising way to solve the Schrödinger equation on a noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) computer, while its success relies on a well-designed wavefunction ansatz. Compared to physically motivated ansatzes, hardware heuristic ansatzes usually lead to a shallower circuit, but it may still be too deep for an NISQ device. Inspired by the quantum neural network, we propose a new hardware heuristic ansatz where the circuit depth can be significantly reduced by introducing ancilla qubits, which makes a practical simulation of a chemical reaction with more than 20 atoms feasible on a currently available quantum computer. More importantly, the expressibility of this new ansatz can be improved by increasing either the depth or the width of the circuit, which makes it adaptable to different hardware environments. These results open a new avenue to develop practical applications of quantum computation in the NISQ era.

Quantum circuit matrix product state ansatz for large-scale simulations of molecules

As in the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method, approximating many-body wave function of electrons using a matrix product state (MPS) is a promising way to solve electronic structure problems. The expressibility of an MPS is determined by the size of the matrices or in other words the bond dimension, which unfortunately should be very large in many cases. In this study, we propose to calculate the ground state energies of molecular systems by variationally optimizing quantum circuit MPS (QCMPS) with a relatively small number of qubits. It is demonstrated that with carefully chosen circuit structure and orbital localization scheme, QCMPS can reach a similar accuracy as that achieved in DMRG with an exponentially large bond dimension. QCMPS simulation of a linear molecule with 50 orbitals can reach the chemical accuracy using only 6 qubits at a moderate circuit depth. These results suggest that QCMPS is a promising wave function ansatz in the variational quantum eigensolver algorithm for molecular systems.

Evolution of dispersal in advective patchy environments with varying drift rates

In this paper, we study a two stream species Lotka-Volterra competition patch model with the patches aligned along a line. The two species are supposed to be identical except for the diffusion rates. For each species, the diffusion rates between patches are the same, while the drift rates vary. Our results show that the convexity of the drift rates has a significant impact on the competition outcomes: if the drift rates are convex, then the species with larger diffusion rate wins the competition; if the drift rates are concave, then the species with smaller diffusion rate wins the competition.

On the impact of spatial heterogeneity and drift rate in a three-patch two-species Lotka-Volterra competition model over a stream

In this paper, we study a three-patch two-species Lotka-Volterra competition patch model over a stream network. The individuals are subject to both random and directed movements, and the two species are assumed to be identical except for the movement rates. The environment is heterogeneous, and the carrying capacity is lager in upstream locations. We treat one species as a resident species and investigate whether the other species can invade or not. Our results show that the spatial heterogeneity of environment and the magnitude of the drift rates have a large impact on the competition outcomes of the stream species.

Approaching the Limit of Image Rescaling via Flow Guidance

Image downscaling and upscaling are two basic rescaling operations. Once the image is downscaled, it is difficult to be reconstructed via upscaling due to the loss of information. To make these two processes more compatible and improve the reconstruction performance, some efforts model them as a joint encoding-decoding task, with the constraint that the downscaled (i.e. encoded) low-resolution (LR) image must preserve the original visual appearance. To implement this constraint, most methods guide the downscaling module by supervising it with the bicubically downscaled LR version of the original high-resolution (HR) image. However, this bicubic LR guidance may be suboptimal for the subsequent upscaling (i.e. decoding) and restrict the final reconstruction performance. In this paper, instead of directly applying the LR guidance, we propose an additional invertible flow guidance module (FGM), which can transform the downscaled representation to the visually plausible image during downscaling and transform it back during upscaling. Benefiting from the invertibility of FGM, the downscaled representation could get rid of the LR guidance and would not disturb the downscaling-upscaling process. It allows us to remove the restrictions on the downscaling module and optimize the downscaling and upscaling modules in an end-to-end manner. In this way, these two modules could cooperate to maximize the HR reconstruction performance. Extensive experiments demonstrate that the proposed method can achieve state-of-the-art (SotA) performance on both downscaled and reconstructed images.

Detecting Exploit Primitives Automatically for Heap Vulnerabilities on Binary Programs

Automated Exploit Generation (AEG) is a well-known difficult task, especially for heap vulnerabilities. Previous works first detected heap vulnerabilities and then searched for exploitable states by using symbolic execution and fuzzing techniques on binary programs. However, it is not always easy to discovery bugs using fuzzing or symbolic technologies and solvable for internal overflow of heap objects. In this paper, we present a solution DEPA to detect exploit primitives based on primitive-crucial-behavior model for heap vulnerabilities. The core of DEPA contains two novel techniques, 1) primitive-crucial-behavior identification through pointer dependence analysis, and 2) exploit primitive determination method which includes triggering both vulnerabilities and exploit primitives. We evaluate DEPA on eleven real-world CTF(capture the flag) programs with heap vulnerabilities and DEPA can discovery arbitrary write and arbitrary jump exploit primitives for ten programs except for program multi-heap. Results showed that primitive-crucial-behavior identification and determining exploit primitives are accurate and effective by using our approach. In addition, DEPA is superior to the state-of-the-art tools in determining exploit primitives for the heap object internal overflow

Distributed Stochastic Constrained Composite Optimization over Time-Varying Network with a Class of Communication Noise

This paper is concerned with distributed stochastic multi-agent constrained optimization problem over time-varying network with a class of communication noise. This paper considers the problem in composite optimization setting which is more general in the literature of noisy network optimization. It is noteworthy that the mainstream existing methods for noisy network optimization are Euclidean projection based. Based on Bregman projection-based mirror descent scheme, we present a non-Euclidean method and investigate their convergence behavior. This method is the distributed stochastic composite mirror descent type method (DSCMD-N) which provides a more general algorithm framework. Some new error bounds for DSCMD-N are obtained. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work to analyze and derive convergence rates of optimization algorithm in noisy network optimization. We also show that an optimal rate of $O(1/\sqrt{T})$ in nonsmooth convex optimization can be obtained for the proposed method under appropriate communication noise condition. Moreover, novel convergence results are comprehensively derived in expectation convergence, high probability convergence, and almost surely sense.

Search for gamma-ray spectral lines with the DArk Matter Particle Explorer

The DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) is well suitable for searching for monochromatic and sharp $γ$-ray structures in the GeV$-$TeV range thanks to its unprecedented high energy resolution. In this work, we search for $γ$-ray line structures using five years of DAMPE data. To improve the sensitivity, we develop two types of dedicated data sets (including the BgoOnly data which is the first time to be used in the data analysis for the calorimeter-based gamma-ray observatories) and adopt the signal-to-noise ratio optimized regions of interest (ROIs) for different DM density profiles. No line signals or candidates are found between 10 and 300 GeV in the Galaxy. The constraints on the velocity-averaged cross section for $χχ\to γγ$ and the decay lifetime for $χ\to γν$, both at 95% confidence level, have been calculated and the systematic uncertainties have been taken into account. Comparing to the previous Fermi-LAT results, though DAMPE has an acceptance smaller by a factor of $\sim 10$, similar constraints on the DM parameters are achieved and below 100 GeV the lower limits on the decay lifetime are even stronger by a factor of a few. Our results demonstrate the potential of high-energy-resolution observations on dark matter detection.

ACE: Cooperative Multi-agent Q-learning with Bidirectional Action-Dependency

Multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL) suffers from the non-stationarity problem, which is the ever-changing targets at every iteration when multiple agents update their policies at the same time. Starting from first principle, in this paper, we manage to solve the non-stationarity problem by proposing bidirectional action-dependent Q-learning (ACE). Central to the development of ACE is the sequential decision-making process wherein only one agent is allowed to take action at one time. Within this process, each agent maximizes its value function given the actions taken by the preceding agents at the inference stage. In the learning phase, each agent minimizes the TD error that is dependent on how the subsequent agents have reacted to their chosen action. Given the design of bidirectional dependency, ACE effectively turns a multiagent MDP into a single-agent MDP. We implement the ACE framework by identifying the proper network representation to formulate the action dependency, so that the sequential decision process is computed implicitly in one forward pass. To validate ACE, we compare it with strong baselines on two MARL benchmarks. Empirical experiments demonstrate that ACE outperforms the state-of-the-art algorithms on Google Research Football and StarCraft Multi-Agent Challenge by a large margin. In particular, on SMAC tasks, ACE achieves 100% success rate on almost all the hard and super-hard maps. We further study extensive research problems regarding ACE, including extension, generalization, and practicability. Code is made available to facilitate further research.

MSV Challenge 2022: NPU-HC Speaker Verification System for Low-resource Indian Languages

This report describes the NPU-HC speaker verification system submitted to the O-COCOSDA Multi-lingual Speaker Verification (MSV) Challenge 2022, which focuses on developing speaker verification systems for low-resource Asian languages. We participate in the I-MSV track, which aims to develop speaker verification systems for various Indian languages. In this challenge, we first explore different neural network frameworks for low-resource speaker verification. Then we leverage vanilla fine-tuning and weight transfer fine-tuning to transfer the out-domain pre-trained models to the in-domain Indian dataset. Specifically, the weight transfer fine-tuning aims to constrain the distance of the weights between the pre-trained model and the fine-tuned model, which takes advantage of the previously acquired discriminative ability from the large-scale out-domain datasets and avoids catastrophic forgetting and overfitting at the same time. Finally, score fusion is adopted to further improve performance. Together with the above contributions, we obtain 0.223% EER on the public evaluation set, ranking 2nd place on the leaderboard. On the private evaluation set, the EER of our submitted system is 2.123% and 0.630% for the constrained and unconstrained sub-tasks of the I-MSV track, leading to the 1st and 3rd place in the ranking, respectively.

Unconventional delocalization in a family of 3D Lieb lattices

Uncorrelated disorder in generalized 3D Lieb models gives rise to the existence of bounded mobility edges, destroys the macroscopic degeneracy of the flat bands and breaks their compactly-localized states. We now introduce a mix of order and disorder such that this degeneracy remains and the compactly-localized states are preserved. We obtain the energy-disorder phase diagrams and identify mobility edges. Intriguingly, for large disorder the survival of the compactly-localized states induces the existence of delocalized eigenstates close to the original flat band energies -- yielding seemingly divergent mobility edges. For small disorder, however, a change from extended to localized behavior can be found upon decreasing disorder -- leading to an unconventional ``inverse Anderson" behavior. We show that transfer matrix methods, computing the localization lengths, as well as sparse-matrix diagonalization, using spectral gap-ratio energy-level statistics, are in excellent quantitative agreement. The preservation of the compactly-localized states even in the presence of this disorder might be useful for envisaged storage applications.

From Coarse to Fine: Hierarchical Pixel Integration for Lightweight Image Super-Resolution

Image super-resolution (SR) serves as a fundamental tool for the processing and transmission of multimedia data. Recently, Transformer-based models have achieved competitive performances in image SR. They divide images into fixed-size patches and apply self-attention on these patches to model long-range dependencies among pixels. However, this architecture design is originated for high-level vision tasks, which lacks design guideline from SR knowledge. In this paper, we aim to design a new attention block whose insights are from the interpretation of Local Attribution Map (LAM) for SR networks. Specifically, LAM presents a hierarchical importance map where the most important pixels are located in a fine area of a patch and some less important pixels are spread in a coarse area of the whole image. To access pixels in the coarse area, instead of using a very large patch size, we propose a lightweight Global Pixel Access (GPA) module that applies cross-attention with the most similar patch in an image. In the fine area, we use an Intra-Patch Self-Attention (IPSA) module to model long-range pixel dependencies in a local patch, and then a $3\times3$ convolution is applied to process the finest details. In addition, a Cascaded Patch Division (CPD) strategy is proposed to enhance perceptual quality of recovered images. Extensive experiments suggest that our method outperforms state-of-the-art lightweight SR methods by a large margin. Code is available at https://github.com/passerer/HPINet.

Multi-Granularity Cross-Modality Representation Learning for Named Entity Recognition on Social Media

Named Entity Recognition (NER) on social media refers to discovering and classifying entities from unstructured free-form content, and it plays an important role for various applications such as intention understanding and user recommendation. With social media posts tending to be multimodal, Multimodal Named Entity Recognition (MNER) for the text with its accompanying image is attracting more and more attention since some textual components can only be understood in combination with visual information. However, there are two drawbacks in existing approaches: 1) Meanings of the text and its accompanying image do not match always, so the text information still plays a major role. However, social media posts are usually shorter and more informal compared with other normal contents, which easily causes incomplete semantic description and the data sparsity problem. 2) Although the visual representations of whole images or objects are already used, existing methods ignore either fine-grained semantic correspondence between objects in images and words in text or the objective fact that there are misleading objects or no objects in some images. In this work, we solve the above two problems by introducing the multi-granularity cross-modality representation learning. To resolve the first problem, we enhance the representation by semantic augmentation for each word in text. As for the second issue, we perform the cross-modality semantic interaction between text and vision at the different vision granularity to get the most effective multimodal guidance representation for every word. Experiments show that our proposed approach can achieve the SOTA or approximate SOTA performance on two benchmark datasets of tweets. Efficient and Accurate Quantized Image Super-Resolution on Mobile NPUs, Mobile AI & AIM 2022 challenge: Report

Image super-resolution is a common task on mobile and IoT devices, where one often needs to upscale and enhance low-resolution images and video frames. While numerous solutions have been proposed for this problem in the past, they are usually not compatible with low-power mobile NPUs having many computational and memory constraints. In this Mobile AI challenge, we address this problem and propose the participants to design an efficient quantized image super-resolution solution that can demonstrate a real-time performance on mobile NPUs. The participants were provided with the DIV2K dataset and trained INT8 models to do a high-quality 3X image upscaling. The runtime of all models was evaluated on the Synaptics VS680 Smart Home board with a dedicated edge NPU capable of accelerating quantized neural networks. All proposed solutions are fully compatible with the above NPU, demonstrating an up to 60 FPS rate when reconstructing Full HD resolution images. A detailed description of all models developed in the challenge is provided in this paper.

Distinguishable Speaker Anonymization based on Formant and Fundamental Frequency Scaling

Speech data on the Internet are proliferating exponentially because of the emergence of social media, and the sharing of such personal data raises obvious security and privacy concerns. One solution to mitigate these concerns involves concealing speaker identities before sharing speech data, also referred to as speaker anonymization. In our previous work, we have developed an automatic speaker verification (ASV)-model-free anonymization framework to protect speaker privacy while preserving speech intelligibility. Although the framework ranked first place in VoicePrivacy 2022 challenge, the anonymization was imperfect, since the speaker distinguishability of the anonymized speech was deteriorated. To address this issue, in this paper, we directly model the formant distribution and fundamental frequency (F0) to represent speaker identity and anonymize the source speech by the uniformly scaling formant and F0. By directly scaling the formant and F0, the speaker distinguishability degradation of the anonymized speech caused by the introduction of other speakers is prevented. The experimental results demonstrate that our proposed framework can improve the speaker distinguishability and significantly outperforms our previous framework in voice distinctiveness. Furthermore, our proposed method also can trade off the privacy-utility by using different scaling factors.

A Rotation Meanout Network with Invariance for Dermoscopy Image Classification and Retrieval

The computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) system can provide a reference basis for the clinical diagnosis of skin diseases. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) can not only extract visual elements such as colors and shapes but also semantic features. As such they have made great improvements in many tasks of dermoscopy images. The imaging of dermoscopy has no principal orientation, indicating that there are a large number of skin lesion rotations in the datasets. However, CNNs lack rotation invariance, which is bound to affect the robustness of CNNs against rotations. To tackle this issue, we propose a rotation meanout (RM) network to extract rotation-invariant features from dermoscopy images. In RM, each set of rotated feature maps corresponds to a set of outputs of the weight-sharing convolutions and they are fused using meanout strategy to obtain the final feature maps. Through theoretical derivation, the proposed RM network is rotation-equivariant and can extract rotation-invariant features when followed by the global average pooling (GAP) operation. The extracted rotation-invariant features can better represent the original data in classification and retrieval tasks for dermoscopy images. The RM is a general operation, which does not change the network structure or increase any parameter, and can be flexibly embedded in any part of CNNs. Extensive experiments are conducted on a dermoscopy image dataset. The results show our method outperforms other anti-rotation methods and achieves great improvements in dermoscopy image classification and retrieval tasks, indicating the potential of rotation invariance in the field of dermoscopy images.

Coexistence of directed momentum current and ballistic energy diffusion in coupled non-Hermitian kicked rotors

We numerically investigate the quantum transport in a coupled kicked rotors with the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric potential. We find that the spontaneous $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry breaking of wavefunctions emerges when the amplitude of the imaginary part of the complex potential is beyond a threshold value, which can be modulated by the coupling strength effectively. In the regime of the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry breaking, the particles driven by the periodical kicks move unidirectionally in momentum space, indicating the emergence of a directed current. Meanwhile, with increasing the coupling strength, we find a transition from the ballistic energy diffusion to a kind of the modified ballistic energy diffusion where the width of the wavepacket also increases with time in a power law. Our findings suggest that the decoherence effect induced by the interplay between the inter-particle coupling and the non-Hermitian driving potential is responsible for these particular transport behaviors.

CEntRE: A paragraph-level Chinese dataset for Relation Extraction among Enterprises

Enterprise relation extraction aims to detect pairs of enterprise entities and identify the business relations between them from unstructured or semi-structured text data, and it is crucial for several real-world applications such as risk analysis, rating research and supply chain security. However, previous work mainly focuses on getting attribute information about enterprises like personnel and corporate business, and pays little attention to enterprise relation extraction. To encourage further progress in the research, we introduce the CEntRE, a new dataset constructed from publicly available business news data with careful human annotation and intelligent data processing. Extensive experiments on CEntRE with six excellent models demonstrate the challenges of our proposed dataset.
