Efficient Reinforcement Learning with Impaired Observability: Learning to Act with Delayed and Missing State Observations

In real-world reinforcement learning (RL) systems, various forms of {\it impaired observability} can complicate matters. These situations arise when an agent is unable to observe the most recent state of the system due to latency or lossy channels, yet the agent must still make real-time decisions. This paper introduces a theoretical investigation into efficient RL in control systems where agents must act with delayed and missing state observations. We present algorithms and establish near-optimal regret upper and lower bounds, of the form $\tilde{\mathcal{O}}(\sqrt{{\rm poly}(H) SAK})$, for RL in the delayed and missing observation settings. Here $S$ and $A$ are the sizes of state and action spaces, $H$ is the time horizon and $K$ is the number of episodes. Despite impaired observability posing significant challenges to the policy class and planning, our results demonstrate that learning remains efficient, with the regret bound optimally depending on the state-action size of the original system. Additionally, we provide a characterization of the performance of the optimal policy under impaired observability, comparing it to the optimal value obtained with full observability. Numerical results are provided to support our theory.

Doubly Charmed Tetraquark $T^+_{cc}$ from Lattice QCD near Physical Point

The doubly charmed tetraquark $T^+_{cc}$ recently discovered by the LHCb Collaboration is studied on the basis of $(2+1)$-flavor lattice QCD simulations of the $D^*D$ system with nearly physical pion mass $m_π=146$ MeV. The interaction of $D^*D$ in the isoscalar and $S$-wave channel, derived from the hadronic spacetime correlation by the HAL QCD method, is attractive for all distances and leads to a near-threshold virtual state with a pole position $E_\text{pole}=-59\left(^{+53}_{-99}\right)\left(^{+2}_{-67}\right)$ keV and a large scattering length $1/a_0=0.05(5)\left(^{+2}_{-2}\right)~\text{fm}^{-1}$. The virtual state is shown to evolve into a loosely bound state as $m_π$ decreases to its physical value by using a potential modified to $m_π=135$ MeV based on the pion-exchange interaction. Such a potential is found to give a semiquantitative description of the LHCb data on the $D^0D^0π^+$ mass spectrum. Future study is necessary to perform physical-point simulations with the isospin-breaking and open three-body-channel effects taken into account.

Neutron-proton effective mass splitting in neutron-rich matter

Nucleon effective masses in neutron-rich matter are studied with the relativistic Brueckner-Hartree-Fock (RBHF) theory in the full Dirac space. The neutron and proton effective masses for symmetric nuclear matter are 0.80 times rest mass, which agrees well with the empirical values. In neutron-rich matter, the effective mass of the neutron is found larger than that of the proton, and the neutron-proton effective mass splittings at the empirical saturation density are predicted as $0.187α$ with $α$ being the isospin asymmetry parameter. The result is compared to other ab initio calculations and is consistent with the constraints from the nuclear reaction and structure measurements, such as the nucleon-nucleus scattering, the giant resonances of $^{208}$Pb, and the Hugenholtz-Van Hove theorem with systematics of nuclear symmetry energy and its slope. The predictions of the neutron-proton effective mass splitting from the RBHF theory in the full Dirac space might be helpful to constrain the isovector parameters in phenomenological density functionals.

Deformed relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov theory in continuum with a point-coupling functional. II. Examples of odd Nd isotopes

The aim of this work is to extend the deformed relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov theory in continuum (DRHBc) based on the point-coupling density functionals to odd-$A$ and odd-odd nuclei and examine its applicability by taking odd-$A$ Nd isotopes as examples. In the DRHBc theory, the densities and potentials with axial deformation are expanded in terms of Legendre polynomials, and the relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov equations are solved in a Dirac Woods-Saxon basis to include the continuum effects. For an odd-$A$ or odd-odd nucleus, the blocking effect of unpaired nucleon(s) is taken into account with the equal filling approximation. To determine its ground state, an automatic blocking procedure is adopted, in which the orbital with the lowest quasiparticle energy is blocked during the iteration. This procedure is justified by comparing with the results from the orbital-fixed blocking calculations, in which the blocked orbital near the Fermi surface is fixed during the iteration. The ground states for both light and heavy nuclei can be provided by the automatic blocking procedure as the orbital-fixed blocking procedure, but with considerably reduced computational cost. The numerical details for even-even nuclei are found to be valid for odd-$A$ and odd-odd nuclei as well. Taking Nd isotopes including both even-even and odd-$A$ ones as examples, the calculated ground-state properties with PC-PK1 are in good agreement with the available experimental data. This work paves the way to construct the DRHBc mass table including all even-even, odd-$A$ and odd-odd nuclei in the nuclear chart.

Algorithms for square root of semi-infinite quasi-Toeplitz $M$-matrices

A quasi-Toeplitz $M$-matrix $A$ is an infinite $M$-matrix that can be written as the sum of a semi-infinite Toeplitz matrix and a correction matrix. This paper is concerned with computing the square root of invertible quasi-Toeplitz $M$-matrices which preserves the quasi-Toeplitz structure. We show that the Toeplitz part of the square root can be easily computed through evaluation/interpolation at the $m$ roots of unity. This advantage allows to propose algorithms solely for the computation of correction part, whence we propose a fixed-point iteration and a structure-preserving doubling algorithm. Additionally, we show that the correction part can be approximated by solving a nonlinear matrix equation with coefficients of finite size followed by extending the solution to infinity. Numerical experiments showing the efficiency of the proposed algorithms are performed.

Attractive $N$-$ϕ$ Interaction and Two-Pion Tail from Lattice QCD near Physical Point

First results on the interaction between the $ϕ$-meson and the nucleon ($N$) are presented based on the ($2+1$)-flavor lattice QCD simulations with nearly physical quark masses. Using the HAL QCD method, the spacetime correlation of the $N$-$ϕ$ system in the spin 3/2 channel is converted into the $N$-$ϕ$ scattering phase shift through the interaction potential. The $N$-$ϕ$ potential appears to be a combination of a short-range attractive core and a long-range attractive tail. The latter is found to be consistent with the two-pion exchange (TPE) obtained from the interaction between a color-dipole and the nucleon. The resultant scattering length and effective range for $m_π=$ 146.4 MeV are $ a^{(3/2)}_0=-1.43(23)_{\rm stat.}\left(^{+36}_{-06}\right)_{\rm syst.} {\rm fm}$ and $ r^{(3/2)}_{\rm eff}=2.36(10)_{\rm stat.}\left(^{+02}_{-48}\right)_{\rm syst.} {\rm fm}$, respectively. The magnitude of the scattering length is shown to have nontrivial dependence of $m_π$ and is sensitive to the existence of the long-range tail from TPE.

Asymmetric Nuclear Matter and Neutron Star Properties in Relativistic ab initio Theory in the Full Dirac Space

The long-standing controversy about the isospin dependence of the effective Dirac mass in ab initio calculations of asymmetric nuclear matter is clarified by solving the relativistic Brueckner-Hartree-Fock equations in the full Dirac space. The symmetry energy and its slope parameter at the saturation density are $E_{\text{sym}}(ρ_0)=33.1$ MeV and $L=65.2$ MeV, in agreement with empirical and experimental values. Further applications predict the neutron star radius $R_{1.4M_\odot}\approx 12$ km and the maximum mass of a neutron star $M_{\text{max}}\leq 2.4M_\odot$.

Covariant Density Functional Theory with Localized Exchange Terms

A new density-dependent point-coupling covariant density functional PCF-PK1 is proposed, where the exchange terms of the four-fermion terms are local and are taken into account with the Fierz transformation. The coupling constants of the PCF-PK1 functional are determined by empirical saturation properties and ab initio equation of state and proton-neutron Dirac mass splittings for nuclear matter as well as the ground-state properties of selected spherical nuclei. The success of the PCF-PK1 is illustrated with properties of the infinite nuclear matter and finite nuclei including the ground-state properties and the Gamow-Teller resonances. In particular, the PCFPK1 eliminates the spurious shell closures at Z = 58 and Z = 92, which exist commonly in many covariant density functionals without exchange terms. Moreover, the Gamow-Teller resonances are nicely reproduced without any adjustable parameters, and this demonstrates that a self-consistent description for the Gamow-Teller resonances can be achieved with the localized exchange terms in the PCF-PK1. ?

Triaxiality induced monopole-quadrupole-hexadecupole coupling in the isoscalar giant resonances for $^{86}\textrm{Ge}$

The isoscalar giant resonances for $^{86}\textrm{Ge}$ are studied by the quasiparticle finite amplitude method based on the covariant density functional theory. In addition to the well-known monopole-quadrupole coupling that splits the isoscalar giant monopole resonance in axially deformed nuclei, a monopole-quadrupole-hexadecupole coupling is identified in the triaxially deformed nucleus $^{86}\textrm{Ge}$, leading to the emergence of a distinct resonance peak at the low energy side of the isoscalar monopole strength function. The transition density of the triaxiality induced resonance peak shows a strong interplay among monopole, quadrupole, and hexadecupole vibrations. The resonance peak responses to monopole, quadrupole, and hexadecupole perturbations simultaneously, which could be regarded as a fingerprint of the triaxiality in $^{86}\textrm{Ge}$.

Finite amplitude method on the deformed relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov theory in continuum: The isoscalar giant monopole resonance in exotic nuclei

Finite amplitude method based on the deformed relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov theory in continuum (DRHBc-FAM) is developed and applied to study isoscalar giant monopole resonance in exotic nuclei. Validation of the numerical implementation is examined for $^{208}\textrm{Pb}$. The isoscalar giant monopole resonances for even-even calcium isotopes from $^{40}\textrm{Ca}$ to the last bound neutron-rich nucleus $^{80}\textrm{Ca}$ are calculated, and a good agreement with the available experimental centroid energies is obtained for $^{40-48}\textrm{Ca}$. For the exotic calcium isotopes, e.g., $^{68}\textrm{Ca}$ and $^{80}\textrm{Ca}$, the DRHBc-FAM calculated results are closer to the energy weighted sum rule than the calculations on the harmonic oscillator basis, which highlights the advantages of DRHBc-FAM in describing giant resonances for exotic nuclei. In order to explore the soft monopole mode in the exotic nuclei, the giant monopole resonance for the deformed exotic nucleus $^{200}\textrm{Nd}$ is investigated, where the prolate shape and the oblate shape coexist. A soft monopole mode near 6.0 MeV is found in the prolate case, and another one near 4.5 MeV is found in the oblate case. The transition density of the soft monopole mode shows in phase or out-of-phase vibrations near the surface region, which is generated by quadrupole vibrations.

Massively scalable stencil algorithm

Stencil computations lie at the heart of many scientific and industrial applications. Unfortunately, stencil algorithms perform poorly on machines with cache based memory hierarchy, due to low re-use of memory accesses. This work shows that for stencil computation a novel algorithm that leverages a localized communication strategy effectively exploits the Cerebras WSE-2, which has no cache hierarchy. This study focuses on a 25-point stencil finite-difference method for the 3D wave equation, a kernel frequently used in earth modeling as numerical simulation. In essence, the algorithm trades memory accesses for data communication and takes advantage of the fast communication fabric provided by the architecture. The algorithm -- historically memory bound -- becomes compute bound. This allows the implementation to achieve near perfect weak scaling, reaching up to 503 TFLOPs on WSE-2, a figure that only full clusters can eventually yield.

Optimized Two-Baryon Operators in Lattice QCD

A set of optimized interpolating operators which are dominantly coupled to each eigenstate of two baryons on the lattice is constructed by the HAL QCD method. To test its validity, we consider heavy dibaryons $Ω_{3Q}Ω_{3Q}$ ($Q=s,c$) calculated by (2+1)-flavor lattice QCD simulations with nearly physical pion mass. The optimized two-baryon operators are shown to provide effective energies of the ground and excited states separately stable as a function of the Euclidean time. Also they agree to the eigenenergies in a finite lattice box obtained from the leading-order HAL QCD potential $V({\boldsymbol{r}})$ within statistical errors. The overlapping factors between the optimized sink operators and the state created by the wall-type source operator indicate that $V( \boldsymbol{r})$ can be reliably extracted, no matter whether the spacetime correlation of two baryons is dominated by the ground state or the excited state. It is suggested that the optimized set of operators is useful for variational studies of hadron-hadron interactions.

Accurate relativistic chiral nucleon-nucleon interaction up to NNLO

We construct a relativistic chiral nucleon-nucleon interaction up to the next-to-next-to-leading order in covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory. We show that a good description of the $np$ phase shifts up to $T_\mathrm{lab}=200$ MeV and even higher can be achieved with a $\tildeχ^2/\mathrm{d.o.f.}$ less than 1. Both the next-to-leading order results and the next-to-next-to-leading order results describe the phase shifts equally well up to $T_\mathrm{lab}=200$ MeV, but for higher energies, the latter behaves better, showing satisfactory convergence. The relativistic chiral potential provides the most essential inputs for relativistic ab initio studies of nuclear structure and reactions, which has been in need for almost two decades.

Nuclear mass table in deformed relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov theory in continuum: I. even-even nuclei

Ground-state properties of even-even nuclei with $8\le Z\le120$ from the proton drip line to the neutron drip line have been investigated using the deformed relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov theory in continuum (DRHBc) with the density functional PC-PK1. With the effects of deformation and continuum included simultaneously, 2583 even-even nuclei are predicted to be bound. The calculated binding energies, two-nucleon separation energies, root-mean-square (rms) radii of neutron, proton, matter, and charge distributions, quadrupole deformations, and neutron and proton Fermi surfaces are tabulated and compared with available experimental data. The rms deviation from the 637 mass data is 1.518 MeV, providing one of the best microscopic descriptions for nuclear masses. The drip lines obtained from DRHBc calculations are compared with other calculations, including the spherical relativistic continuum Hartree-Bogoliubov (RCHB) and triaxial relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov (TRHB) calculations with PC-PK1. The deformation and continuum effects on the limits of the nuclear landscape are discussed. Possible peninsulas consisting of bound nuclei beyond the two-neutron drip line are predicted. The systematics of the two-nucleon separation energies, two-nucleon gaps, rms radii, quadrupole deformations, potential energy curves, neutron densities, neutron mean-field potentials, and pairing energies in the DRHBc calculations are also discussed. In addition, the $α$ decay energies extracted are in good agreement with available data.

Finite volume analysis on systematics of the derivative expansion in HAL QCD method

We study the convergence of the derivative expansion in HAL QCD method from the finite volume analysis. Employing the (2+1)-flavor lattice QCD data obtained at nearly physical light quark masses $(m_π, m_K) \simeq (146, 525)$ MeV and the physical charm quark mass, we study two representative systems, $ΩΩ$ and $Ω_{ccc}Ω_{ccc}$ in the $^1S_0$ channel, where both systems were found to have a shallow bound state in our previous studies. The HAL QCD potentials are determined at the leading-order in the derivative expansion, from which finite-volume eigenmodes are obtained. Utilizing the eigenmode projection, we find that the correlation functions are dominated by the ground state (first excited state) in the case of $ΩΩ$ ($Ω_{ccc}Ω_{ccc}$). In both $ΩΩ$ and $Ω_{ccc}Ω_{ccc}$, the spectra obtained from eigenmode-projected temporal correlators are found to be consistent with those from the HAL QCD potential for both the ground and first excited state. These results show that the derivative expansion is well converged in these systems, and also provide a first explicit evidence that the HAL QCD method enables us to reliably extract the binding energy of the ground state even from the correlator dominated by excited scattering states.

Most charming dibaryon near unitarity

We present a first study on a pair of triply charmed baryons, $Ω_{ccc}Ω_{ccc}$ in the $^1S_0$ channel, on the basis of the HAL QCD method. The measurements are perfomed on the $(2+1)$-flavor lattice QCD configurations with nearly physical light-quark masses and physical charm-quark mass. We show that the system with the Coulomb repulsion taking into account the charge form factor of $Ω_{ccc}$ leads to the scattering length $a^\mathrm{C}_0\simeq-19$ fm and the effective range $r^\mathrm{C}_\mathrm{eff}\simeq0.45$ fm, which indicates $Ω_{ccc}Ω_{ccc}$ is located in the unitary regime.

Predictive power for superheavy nuclear mass and possible stability beyond the neutron drip line in deformed relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov theory in continuum

The predictive power of the deformed relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov theory in continuum (DRHBc) for nuclear mass is examined in the superheavy region, $102 \le Z \le 120$. The accuracy of predicting the 10 (56) measured (measured and empirical) masses is $0.635$ ($0.642$) MeV, in comparison with $0.515$ ($1.360$) MeV by WS4 and $0.910$ ($2.831$) MeV by FRDM. Possible stability against multineutron emission beyond the two-neutron drip line is explored by the DRHBc theory, which takes into account simultaneously the deformation effects, the pairing correlations, and the continuum effects. Nuclei stable against two- and multineutron emissions beyond the two-neutron drip line are predicted in $_{106}$Sg, $_{108}$Hs, $_{110}$Ds, and $_{112}$Cn isotopic chains, forming a peninsula of stability adjacent to the nuclear mainland. This stability is mainly due to the deformation which significantly affects the shell structure around the Fermi surface. The pairing correlations and continuum influence the stability peninsula in a self-consistent way.

Relativistic Brueckner-Hartree-Fock Theory in Infinite Nuclear Matter

On the way of a microscopic derivation of covariant density functionals, the first complete solution of the relativistic Brueckner-Hartree-Fock (RBHF) equations is presented for symmetric nuclear matter. In most of the earlier investigations, the $G$-matrix is calculated only in the space of positive energy solutions. On the other side, for the solution of the relativistic Hartree-Fock (RHF) equations, also the elements of this matrix connecting positive and negative energy solutions are required. So far, in the literature, these matrix elements are derived in various approximations. We discuss solutions of the Thompson equation for the full Dirac space and compare the resulting equation of state with those of earlier attempts in this direction.
