CE Screen: an energy-based structure selection method

We have developed a method to improve the doping computation efficiency, this method is based on first principles calculations and cluster expansion. First principles codes produce highly accurate total energies and optimized geometries for any given structure. Cluster expansion method constructs a cluster expansion using partial first principles results and computes the energies for other structures derived from a parent lattice. Using this method, energies for multiple doping structures can be predicted quickly without series of first principles calculations. This method has been packaged into a tool named as CE Screen and integrated into MatCloud (A high-throughput first principles calculation platform). This makes the tool simple and easy for all the users.

Unifying quantum heat transfer in a nonequilibrium spin-boson model with full counting statistics

To study the full counting statistics of quantum heat transfer in a driven nonequilibrium spin-boson model, we develop a generalized nonequilibrium polaron-transformed Redfield equation with an auxiliary counting field. This enables us to study the impact of qubit-bath coupling ranging from weak to strong regimes. Without external modulations, we observe maximal values of both steady state heat flux and noise power at moderate coupling regimes, below which we find those two transport quantities are enhanced by the finite qubit energy bias. With external modulations, the geometric-phase-induced heat flux shows monotonic decrease as increasing the qubit-bath coupling at zero qubit energy bias (without bias). While under finite qubit energy bias (with bias), the geometric-phase-induced heat flux exhibits an interesting reversal behavior in strong coupling regime. Our results unify the seemingly contradictory results in weak and strong qubit-bath coupling regimes, and provide detailed dissections for the quantum fluctuation of nonequilibrium heat transfer.

Top-squark in natural SUSY under current LHC run-2 data

We utilize the recent LHC-13 TeV data to study the lower mass bound on top-squark (stop) in natural supersymmetry. We recast the LHC sparticle inclusive search of $(\ge 1){\rm jets} + E^{miss}_T$ with $α_T$ variable, the direct stop pair search (1-lepton channel and all-hadronic channel) and the monojet analyses. We find that these searches are complementary depending on stop and higgsino masses: for a heavy stop the all-hadronic stop pair search provides the strongest bound, for an intermediate stop the inclusive SUSY analysis with $α_T$ variable is most efficient, while for a compressed stop-higgsino scenario the monojet search plays the key role. Finally, the lower mass bound on a stop is: (i) 320 GeV for compressed stop-higgsino scenario (mass splitting less than 20 GeV); (ii) 765 (860) GeV for higgsinos lighter than 300 (100) GeV.

Holographic Pair and Charge Density Waves

We examine a holographic model in which a U(1) symmetry and translational invariance are broken spontaneously at the same time. Our construction provides an example of a system with pair-density wave order, in which the superconducting order parameter is spatially modulated but has a zero average. In addition, the charge density oscillates at twice the frequency of the scalar condensate. Depending on the choice of parameters, the model also admits a state with co-existing superconducting and charge density wave orders, in which the scalar condensate has a uniform component.

Asymptotically AdS spacetimes with a timelike Kasner singularity

Exact solutions to Einstein's equations for holographic models are presented and studied. The IR geometry has a timelike cousin of the Kasner singularity, which is the less generic case of the BKL (Belinski-Khalatnikov-Lifshitz) singularity, and the UV is asymptotically AdS. This solution describes a holographic RG flow between them. The solution's appearance is an interpolation between the planar AdS black hole and the AdS soliton. The causality constraint is always satisfied. The entanglement entropy and Wilson loops are discussed. The boundary condition for the current-current correlation function and the Laplacian in the IR is examined. There is no infalling wave in the IR, but instead, there is a normalizable solution in the IR. In a special case, a hyperscaling-violating geometry is obtained after a dimensional reduction.

Cohomological Hall algebras, semicanonical bases and Donaldson-Thomas invariants for $2$-dimensional Calabi-Yau categories (with an appendix by Ben Davison)

We discuss semicanonical bases from the point of view of Cohomological Hall algebras via the "dimensional reduction" from 3-dimensional Calabi-Yau categories to 2-dimensional ones. Also, we discuss the notion of motivic Donaldson-Thomas invariants (as defined by M. Kontsevich and Y. Soibelman) in the framework of 2-dimensional Calabi-Yau categories. In particular we propose a conjecture which allows one to define Kac polynomials for a 2-dimensional Calabi-Yau category (this is a theorem of S. Mozgovoy in the case of preprojective algebras).

Neutron Beam Tests of Barium Fluoride Crystal for Dark Matter Direct Detection

In order to test the capabilities of Barium Fluoride (BaF2) Crystal for dark matter direct detection, nuclear recoils are studied with mono-energetic neutron beam. The energy spectra of nuclear recoils, quenching factors for elastic scattering neutrons and discrimination capability between neutron inelastic scattering events and γ events are obtained for various recoil energies of the F content in BaF2.

Neutron Beam Tests of $CsI(Na)$ and $CaF_{2}(Eu)$ Crystals for Dark Matter Direct Search

In recent decades, inorganic crystals have been widely used in dark matter direct search experiments. To contribute to the understanding of the capabilities of $CsI(Na)$ and $CaF_{2}(Eu)$ crystals, a mono-energetic neutron beam is utilized to study the properties of nuclear recoils, which are expected to be similar to signals of dark matter direct detection. The quenching factor of nuclear recoils in $CsI(Na)$ and $CaF_{2}(Eu)$, as well as an improved discrimination factor between nuclear recoils and $γ$ backgrounds in $CsI(Na)$, are reported.

Direct Transition Resonance in Atomically Uniform Topological Sb(111) Thin Films

Atomically uniform Sb(111) films are fabricated by the method of molecular beam epitaxy on an optimized Si(111) surface. Two dimensional quantum well states and topological surface states in these films are well resolved as measured by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We observe an evolution of direct transition resonances by varying the excitation photon energy (and thus the perpendicular crystal momentum). The experimental results are reproduced in a comprehensive model calculation taking into account first-principles calculated initial states and time-reversed low-energy-electron-diffraction final states in the photoexcitation process. The resonant behavior illustrates that the topological surface states and the quantum well states are analytically connected in momentum space in all three dimensions.

Electromagnetically controlled multiferroic thermal diode

We propose an electromagnetically tunable thermal diode based on a two phase multiferroics composite. Analytical and full numerical calculations for prototypical heterojunction composed of Iron on Barium titanate in the tetragonal phase demonstrate a strong heat rectification effect that can be controlled externally by a moderate electric field. This finding is of an importance for thermally based information processing and sensing and can also be integrated in (spin)electronic circuits for heat management and recycling.

On Holographic Insulators and Supersolids

We obtain holographic realizations for systems that have strong similarities to Mott insulators and supersolids, after examining the ground states of Einstein-Maxwell-scalar systems. The real part of the AC conductivity has a hard gap and a discrete spectrum only. We add momentum dissipation to resolve the delta function in the conductivity due to translational invariance. We develop tools to directly calculate the Drude weight for a large class of solutions and to support our claims. Numerical RG flows are also constructed to verify that such saddle points are IR fixed points of asymptotically AdS_4 geometries.

Expansion dynamics in a one-dimensional hard-core boson model with three-body interactions

Using the adaptive time-dependent density matrix renormalization group method, we numerically investigate the expansion dynamics of bosons in a one-dimensional hard-core boson model with three-body interactions. It is found that the bosons expand ballistically with weak interaction, which are obtained by local density and the radius $R_n$. It is shown that the expansion velocity $V$, obtained from $R_n=Vt$, is dependent on the number of bosons. As a prominent result, the expansion velocity decreases with the enhancement of three-body interaction. We further study the dynamics of the system, which quenches from the ground state with two-thirds filling, the results indicate the expansion is also ballistic in the gapless phase regime. It could help us detect the phase transition in the system.

Interactive Scalar Quantization for Distributed Resource Allocation

In many resource allocation problems, a centralized controller needs to award some resource to a user selected from a collection of distributed users with the goal of maximizing the utility the user would receive from the resource. This can be modeled as the controller computing an extremum of the distributed users' utilities. The overhead rate necessary to enable the controller to reproduce the users' local state can be prohibitively high. An approach to reduce this overhead is interactive communication wherein rate savings are achieved by tolerating an increase in delay. In this paper, we consider the design of a simple achievable scheme based on successive refinements of scalar quantization at each user. The optimal quantization policy is computed via a dynamic program and we demonstrate that tolerating a small increase in delay can yield significant rate savings. We then consider two simpler quantization policies to investigate the scaling properties of the rate-delay trade-offs. Using a combination of these simpler policies, the performance of the optimal policy can be closely approximated with lower computational costs.

Inference of Markovian Properties of Molecular Sequences from NGS Data and Applications to Comparative Genomics

Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) technologies generate large amounts of short read data for many different organisms. The fact that NGS reads are generally short makes it challenging to assemble the reads and reconstruct the original genome sequence. For clustering genomes using such NGS data, word-count based alignment-free sequence comparison is a promising approach, but for this approach, the underlying expected word counts are essential. A plausible model for this underlying distribution of word counts is given through modelling the DNA sequence as a Markov chain (MC). For single long sequences, efficient statistics are available to estimate the order of MCs and the transition probability matrix for the sequences. As NGS data do not provide a single long sequence, inference methods on Markovian properties of sequences based on single long sequences cannot be directly used for NGS short read data. Here we derive a normal approximation for such word counts. We also show that the traditional Chi-square statistic has an approximate gamma distribution, using the Lander-Waterman model for physical mapping. We propose several methods to estimate the order of the MC based on NGS reads and evaluate them using simulations. We illustrate the applications of our results by clustering genomic sequences of several vertebrate and tree species based on NGS reads using alignment-free sequence dissimilarity measures. We find that the estimated order of the MC has a considerable effect on the clustering results, and that the clustering results that use a MC of the estimated order give a plausible clustering of the species.

Entanglement entropy and fidelity susceptibility in the one-dimensional spin-1 XXZ chains with alternating single-site anisotropy

We study the fidelity susceptibility in an antiferromagnetic spin-1 XXZ chain numerically. By using the density-matrix renormalization group method, the effects of the alternating single-site anisotropy $D$ on fidelity susceptibility are investigated. Its relation with the quantum phase transition is analyzed. It is found that the quantum phase transition from the Haldane spin liquid to periodic Néel spin solid can be well characterized by the fidelity. Finite size scaling of fidelity susceptibility shows a power-law divergence at criticality, which indicates the quantum phase transition is of second order. The results are confirmed by the second derivative of the ground-state energy. We also study the relationship between the entanglement entropy, the Schmidt gap and quantum phase transitions. Conclusions drawn from these quantum information observables agree well with each other.

Electrical and Thermal Control of Magnetic Exchange Interactions

We investigate the far-from-equilibrium nature of magnetic anisotropy and exchange interactions between molecular magnets embedded in a tunnel junction. By mapping to an effective spin model, these magnetic interactions can be divided into three types: isotropic Heisenberg, anisotropic Ising, and anisotropic Dzyaloshinski-Moriya contributions, which are attributed to the background non-equilibrium electronic structures. We further demonstrate that both the magnetic self and exchange interactions can be controlled either electrically by gating and tuning voltage bias, or thermally by adjusting temperature bias. We show that the Heisenberg and Ising interactions scale linearly, while the Dzyaloshinski-Moriya interaction scales quadratically, with the molecule-lead coupling strength. The interactions scale linearly with the effective spin-polarizations of the leads and the molecular coherence. Our results pave a way for smart control of magnetic exchange interactions at atomic and molecular levels.

Thermal Boundary Conductance Across Metal-Nonmetal Interfaces: Effects of Electron-Phonon Coupling both in Metal and at Interface

We theoretically investigate the thermal boundary conductance across metal-nonmetal interfaces in the presence of the electron-phonon coupling not only in metal but also at interface. The thermal energy can be transferred from metal to nonmetal via three channels: (1) the phonon-phonon coupling at interface; (2) the electron-phonon coupling at interface; and (3) the electron-phonon coupling within metal and then subsequently the phonon-phonon coupling at interface. We find that these three channels can be described by an equivalent series-parallel thermal resistor network, based on which we derive out the analytic expression of the thermal boundary conductance. We then exemplify different contributions from each channel to the thermal boundary conductance in three typical interfaces: Pb-diamond, Ti-diamond, and TiN-MgO. Our results reveal that the competition among above channels determines the thermal boundary conductance.

Entanglement entropy, fidelity and the phase transition of one-dimensional hard-core bosonic system with three-body interactions

We study the one-dimensional hard-core Bose-Hubbard model with three-body interactions. In previous work[1], the two-thirds filling solid with both bond-wave order (BOW) and charge-density wave order (CDW) is found and it undergoes a second order phase transition to the superfluid phase. However, in recent work[2], we found the BOW not independent with CDW order. Thus, by utilizing the density matrix renormalization group, we make use of both entanglement entropy and fidelity susceptibility to detect the phase transition. In two-thirds filling, the extreme point of the entanglement entropy also indicates the superfluid phase transition point. However, the pairwise entanglement entropy drop quickly after additional critical point, such disentangled behaviour demonstrates another melting point to the CDW phase. Thus, a novel intermediate phase between CDW phase and superfluid phase is found. At last, we analyzed the half filling case with entanglement entropy.
