Defining and Quantifying the Emergence of Sparse Concepts in DNNs

This paper aims to illustrate the concept-emerging phenomenon in a trained DNN. Specifically, we find that the inference score of a DNN can be disentangled into the effects of a few interactive concepts. These concepts can be understood as causal patterns in a sparse, symbolic causal graph, which explains the DNN. The faithfulness of using such a causal graph to explain the DNN is theoretically guaranteed, because we prove that the causal graph can well mimic the DNN's outputs on an exponential number of different masked samples. Besides, such a causal graph can be further simplified and re-written as an And-Or graph (AOG), without losing much explanation accuracy.

Out-of-Distribution Detection and Selective Generation for Conditional Language Models

Machine learning algorithms typically assume independent and identically distributed samples in training and at test time. Much work has shown that high-performing ML classifiers can degrade significantly and provide overly-confident, wrong classification predictions, particularly for out-of-distribution (OOD) inputs. Conditional language models (CLMs) are predominantly trained to classify the next token in an output sequence, and may suffer even worse degradation on OOD inputs as the prediction is done auto-regressively over many steps. Furthermore, the space of potential low-quality outputs is larger as arbitrary text can be generated and it is important to know when to trust the generated output. We present a highly accurate and lightweight OOD detection method for CLMs, and demonstrate its effectiveness on abstractive summarization and translation. We also show how our method can be used under the common and realistic setting of distribution shift for selective generation (analogous to selective prediction for classification) of high-quality outputs, while automatically abstaining from low-quality ones, enabling safer deployment of generative language models.

From Elastic Spin to Phonon Spin: Symmetry and Fundamental Relations

This work is mainly based on postgraduate lectures at Tongji University since 2020 spring. We firstly revisit the elastic spin and orbital angular momentum [Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 115, 9951 (2018)] but more general for anisotropic systems by applying Noether's theorem to the elastic Lagrangian and by applying the symmetry argument in the field theory. Then, fundamental relations between elastic energy flux and elastic spin are uncovered. In particular cases, the wave spin is closely related to the vorticity of energy flux and momentum. Secondly, we move forward from the elastic spin to revisit the phonon spin [Fizika Tverdogo Tela 3, 2160 (1961)] by applying the second quantization to elastic fields. We show that the uncovered phonon spin, a polarized elastic-vibration quanta, is generally not restricted to transverse phonon modes, but applying to general phonon modes, such as the longitudinal phonon modes, surface phonon modes, and hybridized phonon modes, regarded as a consequence of mode interferences. The elastic spin and phonon spin originate from the local rotating of the field polarization in time domain, not the local circulation (vorticity) of displacement or velocity in space domain. It is hopeful that the present results could advance the fundamental understanding of phonon spin and elastic spin, and promote the spin phononics for hybrid quantum sensing and technology with multiple degrees of freedom.

Kirigami-Inspired Thermal Regulator

One of the current challenges in nanoscience is tailoring phononic devices, such as thermal regulators and thermal computing. This has long been a rather elusive task because the thermal-switching ratio is not as high as electronic analogs. Mapping from a topological kirigami assembly, nitrogen-doped porous graphene metamaterials on the nanoscale are inversely designed with a thermal-switching ratio of 27.79, which is more than double the value of previous work. We trace this behavior to the chiral folding-unfolding deformation, resulting in a metal-insulator transition. This study provides a nanomaterial design paradigm to bridge the gap between kinematics and functional metamaterials that motivates the development of high-performance thermal regulators.

A Simple Approach to Improve Single-Model Deep Uncertainty via Distance-Awareness

Accurate uncertainty quantification is a major challenge in deep learning, as neural networks can make overconfident errors and assign high confidence predictions to out-of-distribution (OOD) inputs. The most popular approaches to estimate predictive uncertainty in deep learning are methods that combine predictions from multiple neural networks, such as Bayesian neural networks (BNNs) and deep ensembles. However their practicality in real-time, industrial-scale applications are limited due to the high memory and computational cost. Furthermore, ensembles and BNNs do not necessarily fix all the issues with the underlying member networks. In this work, we study principled approaches to improve uncertainty property of a single network, based on a single, deterministic representation. By formalizing the uncertainty quantification as a minimax learning problem, we first identify distance awareness, i.e., the model's ability to quantify the distance of a testing example from the training data, as a necessary condition for a DNN to achieve high-quality (i.e., minimax optimal) uncertainty estimation. We then propose Spectral-normalized Neural Gaussian Process (SNGP), a simple method that improves the distance-awareness ability of modern DNNs with two simple changes: (1) applying spectral normalization to hidden weights to enforce bi-Lipschitz smoothness in representations and (2) replacing the last output layer with a Gaussian process layer. On a suite of vision and language understanding benchmarks, SNGP outperforms other single-model approaches in prediction, calibration and out-of-domain detection. Furthermore, SNGP provides complementary benefits to popular techniques such as deep ensembles and data augmentation, making it a simple and scalable building block for probabilistic deep learning. Field-free spin-orbit torque switching of an antiferromagnet with perpendicular Néel vector

The field-free spin-orbit torque induced 180° reorientation of perpendicular magnetization is beneficial for the high performance magnetic memory. The antiferromagnetic material (AFM) can provide higher operation speed than the ferromagnetic counterpart. In this paper, we propose a trilayer AFM/Insulator/Heavy Metal structure as the AFM memory device. We show that the field-free switching of the AFM with perpendicular Néel vector can be achieved by using two orthogonal currents, which provide the uniform damping-like torque and stagger field-like torque, respectively. The reversible switching can be obtained by reversing either current. A current density of 1.79 10^11A/m^2 is sufficient to induce the switching. In addition, the two magnetic moments become noncollinear during the switching. This enables an ultrafast switching within 40 picoseconds. The device and switching mechanism proposed in this work offer a promising approach to deterministically switch the AFM with perpendicular Néel vector. It can also stimulate the development of ultrafast AFM-based MRAM.

Universal Relations of Energy Flow, Acoustic Spin and Torque for Near-Field Acoustic Tweezers

Acoustic spin, radiation torque, energy flow, and reactive power are of significant importance from both fundamental and practical aspects, responsible for flexible tweezer manipulations and near-field sound directionality. Nevertheless, the intrinsic relations among these physical quantities are far from clear. Here, we prove the universal geometric relations among them in acoustics, independent on wave structure details. Particularly, we connect acoustic spin and torque to the cross product of time-averaged energy flow and reactive power, as well as to the local vorticity of energy flow. These relations are universally valid, verified in a variety of different acoustic systems. We also demonstrate the multipole mechanical torques and forces generated in three acoustic near-field sources: Janus, Huygens and Spin sources, applying on small lossy particles. These universal geometric relations uncover hidden locking relations beyond simple spin-momentum locking of near-field waves, and show the basic principles between the acoustic spin, radiation torque, and energy flow, reactive power.

Elastic Valley Spin Controlled Chiral Coupling in Topological Valley Phononic Crystals

Distinct from the phononic valley pseudo-spin, the real physical spin of elastic waves adds a novel tool-kit capable of envisaging the valley-spin physics of topological valley phononic crystals from a local viewpoint. Here, we report the observation of local elastic valley spin as well as the hidden elastic spin-valley locking mechanism overlooked before. We demonstrate that the selective one-way routing of valley phonon states along the topological interface can be reversed by imposing the elastic spin meta-source at different interface locations with opposite valley-spin correspondence. We unveil the physical mechanism of selective directionality as the elastic spin controlled chiral coupling of valley phonon states, through both analytical theory and experimental measurement of the opposite local elastic spin density at different interface locations for different transport directions. The elastic spin of valley topological edge phonons can be extended to other topological states and offers new tool to explore topological metamaterials.

Thermodynamics of hairy accelerating black holes in gauged supergravity and beyond

We study the thermodynamics of accelerating asymptotically AdS black holes with scalar hair in four-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theories, which can be embedded in gauged supergravities for specific dilaton coupling constants. These accelerating black holes are described by charged dilaton C metrics, which have unique features but are almost unexplored before. Thermodynamics of slowly accelerating black holes is generalized to include scalar hair. We find that properly accounting for mixed boundary conditions for the scalar field leads to standard consistent first law and other thermodynamic relations. We compute the dual stress-energy tensor and the mass through holographic renormalization, which is associated with the boundary conditions of the scalar field. We also find that the conformal mass is the same as the holographic mass. Along the same line, we also obtain the thermodynamics of $U(1)^2$-charged accelerating black holes.

Spatially Nonuniform Oscillations in Ferrimagnets Based on an Atomistic Model

The ferrimagnets, such as GdxFeCo(1-x), can produce ultrafast magnetic switching and oscillation due to the strong exchange field. The two-sublattices macrospin model has been widely used to explain the experimental results. However, it fails in describing the spatial nonuniform magnetic dynamics which gives rises to many important phenomenons such as the domain walls and skyrmions. Here we develop the two-dimensional atomistic model and provide a torque analysis method to study the ferrimagnetic oscillation. Under the spin-transfer torque, the magnetization oscillates in the exchange mode or the flipped exchange mode. When the Gd composition is increased, the exchange mode firstly disappears, and then appears again as the magnetization compensation point is reached. We show that these results can only be explained by analyzing the spatial distribution of magnetization and effective fields. In particular, when the sample is small, a spatial nonuniform oscillation is also observed in the square film. Our work reveals the importance of spatial magnetic distributions in understanding the ferrimagnetic dynamics. The method developed in this paper provides an important tool to gain a deeper understanding of ferrimagnets and antiferromagnets. The observed ultrafast dynamics can also stimulate the development of THz oscillators.

TorchOpt: An Efficient Library for Differentiable Optimization

Recent years have witnessed the booming of various differentiable optimization algorithms. These algorithms exhibit different execution patterns, and their execution needs massive computational resources that go beyond a single CPU and GPU. Existing differentiable optimization libraries, however, cannot support efficient algorithm development and multi-CPU/GPU execution, making the development of differentiable optimization algorithms often cumbersome and expensive. This paper introduces TorchOpt, a PyTorch-based efficient library for differentiable optimization. TorchOpt provides a unified and expressive differentiable optimization programming abstraction. This abstraction allows users to efficiently declare and analyze various differentiable optimization programs with explicit gradients, implicit gradients, and zero-order gradients. TorchOpt further provides a high-performance distributed execution runtime. This runtime can fully parallelize computation-intensive differentiation operations (e.g. tensor tree flattening) on CPUs / GPUs and automatically distribute computation to distributed devices. Experimental results show that TorchOpt achieves $5.2\times$ training time speedup on an 8-GPU server. TorchOpt is available at: https://github.com/metaopt/torchopt/.

Analytic solutions of neutral hyperbolic black holes with scalar hair

We find analytic solutions of hyperbolic black holes with scalar hair in anti-de Sitter (AdS) space, and they do not have spherical or planar counterparts. The system is obtained by taking a neutral limit of an Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton system whose special cases are maximal gauged supergravities, while the dilaton is kept nontrivial. There are phase transitions between these black holes and the hyperbolic Schwarzschild-AdS black hole. We discuss two AdS/CFT applications of these hyperbolic black holes. One is phase transitions of holographic Renyi entropies, and the other is phase transitions of quantum field theories in de Sitter space. In addition, we give a C-metric solution as a generalization of the hyperbolic black holes with scalar hair.

Transferable Unlearnable Examples

With more people publishing their personal data online, unauthorized data usage has become a serious concern. The unlearnable strategies have been introduced to prevent third parties from training on the data without permission. They add perturbations to the users' data before publishing, which aims to make the models trained on the perturbed published dataset invalidated. These perturbations have been generated for a specific training setting and a target dataset. However, their unlearnable effects significantly decrease when used in other training settings and datasets. To tackle this issue, we propose a novel unlearnable strategy based on Classwise Separability Discriminant (CSD), which aims to better transfer the unlearnable effects to other training settings and datasets by enhancing the linear separability. Extensive experiments demonstrate the transferability of the proposed unlearnable examples across training settings and datasets.

Topological classification of intrinsic 3D superconductors using anomalous surface construction

Intrinsic topological superconductors have protected gapless Majorana modes, bound and/or propagating, at the natural boundaries of the sample, without requiring field, defect, or heterostructure. We establish the complete classification/construction of intrinsic topological superconductors jointly protected by point-group and time-reversal symmetries in three dimensions. This is obtained from enumerating distinct ways for stacking $n$th-order irreducible building blocks, minimal anomalous surface states of $n$th-order topological superconductors. Particularly, our method provides a unified description of possible surface anomalies away from high-symmetry points/lines in terms of the homotopy group of the surface mass field.

Exemplar-Based Image Colorization with A Learning Framework

Image learning and colorization are hot spots in multimedia domain. Inspired by the learning capability of humans, in this paper, we propose an automatic colorization method with a learning framework. This method can be viewed as a hybrid of exemplar-based and learning-based method, and it decouples the colorization process and learning process so as to generate various color styles for the same gray image. The matching process in the exemplar-based colorization method can be regarded as a parameterized function, and we employ a large amount of color images as the training samples to fit the parameters. During the training process, the color images are the ground truths, and we learn the optimal parameters for the matching process by minimizing the errors in terms of the parameters for the matching function. To deal with images with various compositions, a global feature is introduced, which can be used to classify the images with respect to their compositions, and then learn the optimal matching parameters for each image category individually. What's more, a spatial consistency based post-processing is design to smooth the extracted color information from the reference image to remove matching errors. Extensive experiments are conducted to verify the effectiveness of the method, and it achieves comparable performance against the state-of-the-art colorization algorithms.

Sequential Circuits Synthesis for Rapid Single Flux Quantum Logic Based on Finite State Machine Decomposition

Rapid Single Flux Quantum (RSFQ) logic is a promising technology to supersede Complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) logic in some specialized areas due to providing ultra-fast and energy-efficient circuits. To realize a large-scale integration design, electronic design automation (EDA) tools specialized for RSFQ logic are required due to the divergences in logic type, timing constraints, and circuit structure compared with CMOS logic. Logic synthesis is crucial in converting behavioral circuit description into circuit netlist, typically combining combinational and sequential circuit synthesis. For the RSFQ logic, the sequential circuit synthesis is challenging, especially for non-linear sequential blocks with feedback loops. Thus, this paper presents a sequential circuit synthesis algorithm based on finite state machine (FSM) decomposition, which ensures design functionality, lowers costs, and improves the RSFQ circuit performance. Additionally, we present the synthesis processes of the feedback logic and the 2-bit counter to demonstrate how the proposed algorithm operates, and ISCAS89 benchmark circuits reveal our method's ability to synthesize large-scale sequential circuits.

Color Image Edge Detection using Multi-scale and Multi-directional Gabor filter

In this paper, a color edge detection method is proposed where the multi-scale Gabor filter are used to obtain edges from input color images. The main advantage of the proposed method is that high edge detection accuracy is attained while maintaining good noise robustness. The proposed method consists of three aspects: First, the RGB color image is converted to CIE L*a*b* space because of its wide coloring area and uniform color distribution. Second, a set of Gabor filters are used to smooth the input images and the color edge strength maps are extracted, which are fused into a new ESM with the noise robustness and accurate edge extraction. Third, Embedding the fused ESM in the route of the Canny detector yields a noise-robust color edge detector. The results show that the proposed detector has the better experience in detection accuracy and noise-robustness.

MegBA: A GPU-Based Distributed Library for Large-Scale Bundle Adjustment

Large-scale Bundle Adjustment (BA) requires massive memory and computation resources which are difficult to be fulfilled by existing BA libraries. In this paper, we propose MegBA, a GPU-based distributed BA library. MegBA can provide massive aggregated memory by automatically partitioning large BA problems, and assigning the solvers of sub-problems to parallel nodes. The parallel solvers adopt distributed Precondition Conjugate Gradient and distributed Schur Elimination, so that an effective solution, which can match the precision of those computed by a single node, can be efficiently computed. To accelerate BA computation, we implement end-to-end BA computation using high-performance primitives available on commodity GPUs. MegBA exposes easy-to-use APIs that are compatible with existing popular BA libraries. Experiments show that MegBA can significantly outperform state-of-the-art BA libraries: Ceres (41.45$\times$), RootBA (64.576$\times$) and DeepLM (6.769$\times$) in several large-scale BA benchmarks. The code of MegBA is available at https://github.com/MegviiRobot/MegBA.
