Learning Large Scale Sparse Models

In this work, we consider learning sparse models in large scale settings, where the number of samples and the feature dimension can grow as large as millions or billions. Two immediate issues occur under such challenging scenario: (i) computational cost; (ii) memory overhead. In particular, the memory issue precludes a large volume of prior algorithms that are based on batch optimization technique. To remedy the problem, we propose to learn sparse models such as Lasso in an online manner where in each iteration, only one randomly chosen sample is revealed to update a sparse iterate. Thereby, the memory cost is independent of the sample size and gradient evaluation for one sample is efficient. Perhaps amazingly, we find that with the same parameter, sparsity promoted by batch methods is not preserved in online fashion. We analyze such interesting phenomenon and illustrate some effective variants including mini-batch methods and a hard thresholding based stochastic gradient algorithm. Extensive experiments are carried out on a public dataset which supports our findings and algorithms.

Error estimate of a consistent splitting GSAV scheme for the Navier-Stokes equations

We carry out a rigorous error analysis of the first-order semi-discrete (in time) consistent splitting scheme coupled with a generalized scalar auxiliary variable (GSAV) approach for the Navier-Stokes equations with no-slip boundary conditions. The scheme is linear, unconditionally stable, and only requires solving a sequence of Poisson type equations at each time step. By using the build-in unconditional stability of the GSAV approach, we derive optimal global (resp. local) in time error estimates in the two (resp. three) dimensional case for the velocity and pressure approximations.

Bi2O2Se nanowires presenting high mobility and strong spin-orbit coupling

Systematic electrical transport characterizations were performed on high-quality Bi2O2Se nanowires to illustrate its great transport properties and further application potentials in spintronics. Bi2O2Se nanowires synthesized by chemical vapor deposition method presented a high field-effect mobility up to 1.34*104 cm2V-1s-1, and exhibited ballistic transport in the low back-gate voltage (Vg) regime where conductance plateaus were observed. When further increasing the electron density by increasing Vg, we entered the phase coherent regime and weak antilocalization (WAL) was observed. The spin relaxation length extracted from the WAL was found to be gate tunable, ranging from ~100 nm to ~250 nm and reaching a stronger spin-obit coupling (SOC) than the two-dimensional counterpart (flakes). We attribute the strong SOC and the gate tunability to the presence of a surface accumulation layer which induces a strong inversion asymmetry on the surface. Such scenario was supported by the observation of two Shubnikov-de Haas oscillation frequencies that correspond to two types of carriers, one on the surface, and the other in the bulk. The high-quality Bi2O2Se nanowires with a high mobility and a strong SOC can act as a very prospective material in future spintronics.

Error estimates and blow-up analysis of a finite-element approximation for the parabolic-elliptic Keller-Segel system

The Keller-Segel equations are widely used for describing chemotaxis in biology. Recently, a new fully discrete scheme for this model was proposed in [46], mass conservation, positivity and energy decay were proved for the proposed scheme, which are important properties of the original system. In this paper, we establish the error estimates of this scheme. Then, based on the error estimates, we derive the finite-time blowup of nonradial numerical solutions under some conditions on the mass and the moment of the initial data.

Efficient PAC Learning from the Crowd with Pairwise Comparisons

We study crowdsourced PAC learning of threshold functions, where the labels are gathered from a pool of annotators some of whom may behave adversarially. This is yet a challenging problem and until recently has computationally and query efficient PAC learning algorithm been established by Awasthi et al. (2017). In this paper, we show that by leveraging the more easily acquired pairwise comparison queries, it is possible to exponentially reduce the label complexity while retaining the overall query complexity and runtime. Our main algorithmic contributions are a comparison-equipped labeling scheme that can faithfully recover the true labels of a small set of instances, and a label-efficient filtering process that in conjunction with the small labeled set can reliably infer the true labels of a large instance set.

List-Decodable Sparse Mean Estimation

Robust mean estimation is one of the most important problems in statistics: given a set of samples in $\mathbb{R}^d$ where an $α$ fraction are drawn from some distribution $D$ and the rest are adversarially corrupted, we aim to estimate the mean of $D$. A surge of recent research interest has been focusing on the list-decodable setting where $α\in (0, \frac12]$, and the goal is to output a finite number of estimates among which at least one approximates the target mean. In this paper, we consider that the underlying distribution $D$ is Gaussian with $k$-sparse mean. Our main contribution is the first polynomial-time algorithm that enjoys sample complexity $O\big(\mathrm{poly}(k, \log d)\big)$, i.e. poly-logarithmic in the dimension. One of our core algorithmic ingredients is using low-degree sparse polynomials to filter outliers, which may find more applications.

Eigenvalue Analysis and Applications of the Legendre Dual-Petrov-Galerkin Methods for Initial Value Problems

In this paper, we show that the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the spectral discretisation matrices resulted from the Legendre dual-Petrov-Galerkin (LDPG) method for the $m$th-order initial value problem (IVP): $u^{(m)}(t)=σu(t),\, t\in (-1,1)$ with constant $σ\not=0$ and usual initial conditions at $t=-1,$ are associated with the generalised Bessel polynomials (GBPs). The essential idea of the analysis is to properly construct the basis functions for the solution and its dual spaces so that the matrix of the $m$th derivative is an identity matrix, and the mass matrix is then identical or approximately equals to the Jacobi matrix of the three-term recurrence of GBPs with specific integer parameters. This allows us to characterise the eigenvalue distributions and identify the eigenvectors. As a by-product, we are able to answer some open questions related to the very limited known results on the collocation method at Legendre points (studied in 1980s) for the first-order IVP, by reformulating it into a Petrov-Galerkin formulation. Moreover, we present two stable algorithms for computing zeros of the GBPs, and develop a general space-time spectral method for evolutionary PDEs using either the matrix diagonalisation, which is restricted to a small number of unknowns in time due to the ill-conditioning but is fully parallel, or the QZ decomposition which is numerically stable for a large number of unknowns in time but involves sequential computations. We provide ample numerical results to demonstrate the high accuracy and robustness of the space-time spectral methods for some interesting examples of linear and nonlinear wave problems.

Quasiparticle poisoning rate in a superconducting transmon qubit involving Majorana zero modes

Majorana zero modes have been attracting considerable attention because of their prospective applications in fault-tolerant topological quantum computing. In recent years, some schemes have been proposed to detect and manipulate Majorana zero modes using superconducting qubits. However, manipulating and reading the Majorana zero modes must be kept in the time window of quasiparticle poisoning. In this work, we study the problem of quasiparticle poisoning in a split transmon qubit containing hybrid Josephson junctions involving Majorana zero modes. We show that Majorana coupling will cause parity mixing and 4π Josephson effect. In addition, we obtained the expression of qubit parameter-dependent parity switching rate and demonstrated that quasiparticle poisoning can be greatly suppressed by reducing E_J/E_C via qubit design.

FAN-Trans: Online Knowledge Distillation for Facial Action Unit Detection

Due to its importance in facial behaviour analysis, facial action unit (AU) detection has attracted increasing attention from the research community. Leveraging the online knowledge distillation framework, we propose the ``FANTrans" method for AU detection. Our model consists of a hybrid network of convolution and transformer blocks to learn per-AU features and to model AU co-occurrences. The model uses a pre-trained face alignment network as the feature extractor. After further transformation by a small learnable add-on convolutional subnet, the per-AU features are fed into transformer blocks to enhance their representation. As multiple AUs often appear together, we propose a learnable attention drop mechanism in the transformer block to learn the correlation between the features for different AUs. We also design a classifier that predicts AU presence by considering all AUs' features, to explicitly capture label dependencies. Finally, we make the attempt of adapting online knowledge distillation in the training stage for this task, further improving the model's performance. Experiments on the BP4D and DISFA datasets demonstrating the effectiveness of proposed method.

Training Strategies for Improved Lip-reading

Several training strategies and temporal models have been recently proposed for isolated word lip-reading in a series of independent works. However, the potential of combining the best strategies and investigating the impact of each of them has not been explored. In this paper, we systematically investigate the performance of state-of-the-art data augmentation approaches, temporal models and other training strategies, like self-distillation and using word boundary indicators. Our results show that Time Masking (TM) is the most important augmentation followed by mixup and Densely-Connected Temporal Convolutional Networks (DC-TCN) are the best temporal model for lip-reading of isolated words. Using self-distillation and word boundary indicators is also beneficial but to a lesser extent. A combination of all the above methods results in a classification accuracy of 93.4%, which is an absolute improvement of 4.6% over the current state-of-the-art performance on the LRW dataset. The performance can be further improved to 94.1% by pre-training on additional datasets. An error analysis of the various training strategies reveals that the performance improves by increasing the classification accuracy of hard-to-recognise words.

Lip-reading with Densely Connected Temporal Convolutional Networks

In this work, we present the Densely Connected Temporal Convolutional Network (DC-TCN) for lip-reading of isolated words. Although Temporal Convolutional Networks (TCN) have recently demonstrated great potential in many vision tasks, its receptive fields are not dense enough to model the complex temporal dynamics in lip-reading scenarios. To address this problem, we introduce dense connections into the network to capture more robust temporal features. Moreover, our approach utilises the Squeeze-and-Excitation block, a light-weight attention mechanism, to further enhance the model's classification power. Without bells and whistles, our DC-TCN method has achieved 88.36% accuracy on the Lip Reading in the Wild (LRW) dataset and 43.65% on the LRW-1000 dataset, which has surpassed all the baseline methods and is the new state-of-the-art on both datasets.

Continuously Doping Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8+δ into Electron-Doped Superconductor by CaH 2 Annealing Method

As a typical hole-doped cuprate superconductor, Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8+δ (Bi2212) carrier doping is mostly determined by its oxygen content. Traditional doping methods can regulate its doping level within the range of hole doping. Here we report the first application of CaH 2 annealing method in regulating the doping level of Bi2212. By continuously controlling the anneal time, a series of differently doped samples can be obtained. The combined experimental results of x-ray diffraction, scanning transmission electron microscopy, resistance and Hall measurements demonstrate that the CaH 2 induced topochemical reaction can effectively change the oxygen content of Bi2212 within a very wide range, even switching from hole doping to electron doping. We also found evidence of a low-T c superconducting phase in the electron doping side.

Asymmetric Fraunhofer pattern in Josephson junctions from heterodimensional superlattice V$_5$S$_8$

Introduction of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in a Josephson junction (JJ) gives rise to unusual Josephson effects. We investigate JJs based on a newly discovered heterodimensional superlattice V$_5$S$_8$ with a special form of SOC. The unique homointerface of our JJs enables elimination of extrinsic effects due to interfaces and disorder. We observe asymmetric Fraunhofer patterns with respect to both the perpendicular magnetic field and the current. The asymmetry is influenced by an in-plane magnetic field. Analysis of the pattern points to a nontrivial spatial distribution of the Josephson current that is intrinsic to the SOC in V$_5$S$_8$.

Length preserving numerical schemes for Landau-Lifshitz equation based on Lagrange multiplier approaches

We develop in this paper two classes of length preserving schemes for the Landau-Lifshitz equation based on two different Lagrange multiplier approaches. In the first approach, the Lagrange multiplier $λ(\bx,t)$ equals to $|\nabla m(\bx,t)|^2$ at the continuous level, while in the second approach, the Lagrange multiplier $λ(\bx,t)$ is introduced to enforce the length constraint at the discrete level and is identically zero at the continuous level. By using a predictor-corrector approach, we construct efficient and robust length preserving higher-order schemes for the Landau-Lifshitz equation, with the computational cost dominated by the predictor step which is simply a semi-implicit scheme. Furthermore, by introducing another space-independent Lagrange multiplier, we construct energy dissipative, in addition to length preserving, schemes for the Landau-Lifshitz equation, at the expense of solving one nonlinear algebraic equation. We present ample numerical experiments to validate the stability and accuracy for the proposed schemes, and also provide a performance comparison with some existing schemes.

A real-time and unsupervised face Re-Identification system for Human-Robot Interaction

In the context of Human-Robot Interaction (HRI), face Re-Identification (face Re-ID) aims to verify if certain detected faces have already been observed by robots. The ability of distinguishing between different users is crucial in social robots as it will enable the robot to tailor the interaction strategy toward the users' individual preferences. So far face recognition research has achieved great success, however little attention has been paid to the realistic applications of Face Re-ID in social robots. In this paper, we present an effective and unsupervised face Re-ID system which simultaneously re-identifies multiple faces for HRI. This Re-ID system employs Deep Convolutional Neural Networks to extract features, and an online clustering algorithm to determine the face's ID. Its performance is evaluated on two datasets: the TERESA video dataset collected by the TERESA robot, and the YouTube Face Dataset (YTF Dataset). We demonstrate that the optimised combination of techniques achieves an overall 93.55% accuracy on TERESA dataset and an overall 90.41% accuracy on YTF dataset. We have implemented the proposed method into a software module in the HCI^2 Framework for it to be further integrated into the TERESA robot, and has achieved real-time performance at 10~26 Frames per second.

FP-Age: Leveraging Face Parsing Attention for Facial Age Estimation in the Wild

Image-based age estimation aims to predict a person's age from facial images. It is used in a variety of real-world applications. Although end-to-end deep models have achieved impressive results for age estimation on benchmark datasets, their performance in-the-wild still leaves much room for improvement due to the challenges caused by large variations in head pose, facial expressions, and occlusions. To address this issue, we propose a simple yet effective method to explicitly incorporate facial semantics into age estimation, so that the model would learn to correctly focus on the most informative facial components from unaligned facial images regardless of head pose and non-rigid deformation. To this end, we design a face parsing-based network to learn semantic information at different scales and a novel face parsing attention module to leverage these semantic features for age estimation. To evaluate our method on in-the-wild data, we also introduce a new challenging large-scale benchmark called IMDB-Clean. This dataset is created by semi-automatically cleaning the noisy IMDB-WIKI dataset using a constrained clustering method. Through comprehensive experiment on IMDB-Clean and other benchmark datasets, under both intra-dataset and cross-dataset evaluation protocols, we show that our method consistently outperforms all existing age estimation methods and achieves a new state-of-the-art performance. To the best of our knowledge, our work presents the first attempt of leveraging face parsing attention to achieve semantic-aware age estimation, which may be inspiring to other high level facial analysis tasks. 1T-FeS$_2$$:$ a new type of two-dimensional metallic ferromagnet

Discovery of intrinsic two-dimensional (2D) magnetic materials is crucial for understanding the fundamentals of 2D magnetism and realizing next-generation magnetoelectronic and magneto-optical devices. Although significant efforts have been devoted to identifying 2D magnetism by exfoliating bulk magnetic layered materials, seldom studies are performed to synthesize ultra-thin magnetic materials directly for non-layered magnetic materials. Here, we report the successful synthesis of a new type of theoretically proposed 2D metallic ferromagnet 1T FeS2, through the molten-salt-assisted chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method. The long-range 2D ferromagnetic order is confirmed by the observation of a large anomalous Hall effect (AHE) and a hysteretic magnetoresistance. The experimentally detected out-of-plane ferromagnetic ordering is theoretically suported with Stoner criterion. Our findings open up new possibilities to search novel 2D ferromagnets in non-layered compounds and render opportunities for realizing realistic ultra-thin spintronic devices.

A generalized SAV approach with relaxation for dissipative systems

The scalar auxiliary variable (SAV) approach \cite{shen2018scalar} and its generalized version GSAV proposed in \cite{huang2020highly} are very popular methods to construct efficient and accurate energy stable schemes for nonlinear dissipative systems. However, the discrete value of the SAV is not directly linked to the free energy of the dissipative system, and may lead to inaccurate solutions if the time step is not sufficiently small. Inspired by the relaxed SAV method proposed in \cite{jiang2022improving} for gradient flows, we propose in this paper a generalized SAV approach with relaxation (R-GSAV) for general dissipative systems. The R-GSAV approach preserves all the advantages of the GSAV appraoch, in addition, it dissipates a modified energy that is directly linked to the original free energy. We prove that the $k$-th order implicit-explicit (IMEX) schemes based on R-GSAV are unconditionally energy stable, and we carry out a rigorous error analysis for $k=1,2,3,4,5$. We present ample numerical results to demonstrate the improved accuracy and effectiveness of the R-GSAV approach.
